I’ve made peace with the 4K crop, it can actually be a useful tool to get more flexibility out of wider lenses, but I am having a tremendously hard time falling in love with this camera (also the EOS RP) because of the added steps involved in accessing basic functions, particularly auto focus methods. On the R you need to fiddle about a menu to change modes, which is annoying. On both cameras there is no registered AF point, something I LOVED and relied on greatly with my 5Diii, so going from a single point to tracking modes requires at the least on the EOS R a separate button to toggle, and at the least on the RP a separate button and THEN a dial click, followed by a half press of the shutter. They won’t, but I wish they would, just add a registered AF point function to a firmware update so this camera can feel like a part of my hand and work quickly without a “check then change” work flow for AF methods. If I’m still complaining, the 5Diii has a ring finger button near the grip that could switch between one shot and servo by holding it, meaning you never had to use a menu to change them, and you never had to check with mode you were in to grab the mode you wanted, it was purely muscle memory and it was instant. Now on the R and RP I’ve got to hit a secondary button to toggle one shot to servo and back. It just makes the whole process feel cumbersome and slow, and it’s been a huge factor in preventing both cameras from feeling like an “extension of my body” if you will. It burns so many mental calories to pay attention to the auto focus with these stupid things. Please Canon, registered AF point 😭
I honestly don’t get why so many people hate on this camera. It does photo and video beautifully. Yes it looks terrible on paper, but it’s a phenomenal camera that will impress. To anyone thinking about buying the EOS R, give it a solid few weeks of real use and you won’t sell it guaranteed.
Great review, as a Canon shooter myself I can't help feeling like all of their products leave you wanting one of their other cameras to pick up where the one you chose leaves off, because they all leave something on the table untill you are shooting the 1DX MKII or "C"series for video
I am new to the DSLR world, just got my first one.I got a Canon T7i with the kit lenses and i bought the 24mm pancake the nifty 50 and the 85mm 1.4.I am very happy with it and i look for your videos for guidance,so BOKEH to you!!😂 Thank you K!!.Oh,can you tell me of a TTL on a budget??,Thanks in advance!!.
Good review Kai. Seems they have left holes in the software with this one. Do you think Canon will give us some firmware fixes? Or is this it? Or maybe the EOS RX will be released after A7S3 and LUMIX Sr-1?
The Eos R does 120 fps in 720 p, has a nice streamline single card slot, no superfluous in body stabilization, and lenses that are a bargain at $3,000. What's not to like?
I've bought an old Minolta f4.5/70-210 on Ebay for my A7rII (which is quite old but still better than the newest Canon) which is only 91mm long and weighs only 334g. The f1.7/50mm Rokkor is even smaller! Remember the good old x700 days, when FF photography was reasonable small and light? And yes, IBIS is a must have for these old pocket money lenses.
so did you end up liking it, I think it is a big step up from their first mirrorless models, maybe the next version will be it, but I think as a portable camera this will be a great choice, because the thousands of AF points, the way to use touch screen to swipe from one focus position to the other, the 4k, this could be my 70D replacement.. or backup, or travel cam
Thx for this fair review. I do have mine since a bit more than a week (os since day 1 of shipment). It’s a great FullFrame travel camera! Awesome! Why nobody discusses the awesomeness of using iPhone/iPad ore computer as instant storage media allowing you to instantly put your work on social media and have images backed up on another media.... For me makes this feature the EOS R one step up with the single card slot...
In your opinion, what is the best Canon camera for wedding photography? Im looking into the 5D Mark 4, but if you think there is a better camera please let me know!
The Softness in video comes from Activating Normal EIS or the Enhanced IS. Without any of those activated you get the widest and sharpest footage this camera can deliver.
@MLWATKK from what I have seen on my Eos r, activating enhance degrade a bit of quality and enhance plus further degrades quality. It also cropped in a little. I think it may be more beneficial to add EIS in post rather than in camera. But this I cannot test as I have no software or hardware that can do this.
@MLWATKK You can watch Matti Haapoja's review. He explained the softness and crop during Digital IS very well. I guess Canon's not very capable Processor is the culprit here.
If you had to rank Nikon, Canon and Sony how would you rank them? I mean if you had three brands in front of you and you could only pick one camera which camera would that be?
The problem with M-Fn touch bar is simple. By not providing any tactile feedback it breaks one of the simple rules of ergonomics. A rule that Canon has done a very good job of adhering to until now. If you are going to use a "button" without looking, there must be some auditory or tactile feedback.
nice review as always, i personally ditched canon years ago because of the high video compression and line skipping they never bothered to change for years and still nudging the price up!!! unless the consumer was willing to splash out 4-6k on the 1DX or 1DC....i was NOT. I did notice 4k 10bit with 422 colour external recording ? they have done it? im going to pass out! also @3min 36sec im surprised that woman never got a toff screaming at her for sitting on that vintage car and scratching the paint with her zip.
Flippy Screen and DPAF LOL my 200D has those. All joking aside, I have been considering a full frame for a bit, EOS R is on my short list along with the Sony lineup I got a few Canon lenses, so IF I end with the EOS R it will be the adapter, the one that has built filters is of interest to me. The fact that is uses the LP-6N battery of which I have several already and don't have to spend (more) money on is also a factor. I get called Canon fanboy, well yeah the two cameras in my bag are Canon but I'm not really a brand snob I like Sony too, they really do have the mirrorless thing down ( Ahem, Dual SD card slots hello?) I did use Nikon for many years. Here is my take on it, as a tester and reviewer you have tell of its faults, features and whatever else that is your job, I figure a lot people like me who still have DSLR's which still work very well, probably will not get any RF lenses we already have what lenses we need, we will get a mirrorless with adapter(s) and go on about our business of taking pictures. That is how I see me it doing it, Your experience may vary. Adapters and Mirrorless cameras nothing new here look how many a6xxx series users are using Metabones adapters and their Canon lenses and seem happy about it. I think people should stop wasting time on the negative well youtube reviewers excepted and enjoy this time of change good or bad, I think the EOS R is just the beginning of new things to come, I got excited when the 7D came out and somehow I ended up with a Nikon D7000 I know but I wore that out and got a 7Dmkii my current favorite camera, I also know technology makes it look old even my Sony a6000 will "out perform" it in most scenarios except battery life LOL but thats the great thing look at all the choices we have, Like you said the EOS R is one of the cameras you can just pick up and go to work, my 7Dmkii is like that for me. Enjoy your videos as always. Cheers.
Invested in the Canon lens system but I'm reluctant to buy anymore of their products. It really feels like features are missing not due to technical limitations but rather fear of pro gear sales cannibalization.
After shooting for 3 hours with this camera I really really like it! It won’t replace my 5D IV... BUT Canon did lots of things right! The viewfinder for example... It makes fun to shoot! When they release a pro version of it next year I will buy it ^^
Recently borrowed an ES R and as a stills camera it is an impressive system if you can live without IBIS. Weird how this camera quirks start to make sense the more you use it.
The only thing Canon had accomplished by limiting video capabilities is letting loyal canon customers be introduced to different brands for their video needs, and NOT saving their "C" line-up. End of story
I'm a little confused when you mention that you can't use C-Log with AV or TV modes. Don't most people shoot in manual mode when it come to video? Tis camera tend to get no respect due to it's paper specs. One minute reviewers are dogging it and the next minute reviewers are liking it, but I noticed when they like it, they want you to order it off of their site so that they can get a small cut.
Hey Kai! I never read anywhere of the EFS lenses and no 60fps in 1080p mode. Are you sure you didn't do something wrong with the settings? Apparently there is the auto-crop mode when you put on the lens, and then a separate manual crop mode setting. Could you try that one and see if the options become available?
The R has the same focus assistant system than the C200 😅 Found this out by myself and almost no one is mentioning it... But I think that’s amazing! That C Log is only useable in complete manual is strange... But maybe this is because you have to expose so differently?
Hi Kai, a quick very specific question please. I hope you have time to answer. ;-) I have the 80D and you know the optional x3-x10 crop zoom in FHD1080 , right ? Now my question : Does the EOS R also have that x3-x10 crop zoom in video ? and specifically : cropzoom x3-10 only in FHD1080 or also in 4K , on top of the x1.7 crop factor in 4K ? Because for wildlife shooting , using my 600mm telezoom I would get x1.7 crop in 4K = 1020mm focal length but if I can add x3-x10 crop zoom on top of that then it would be like having a 3060-10200mm , shooting in 4K , which would even allow me to crop furthermore in edit to downsize e.g. to 1080 , thus shooting potentially at a monster tele of 20'000 mm or more.... sure, image quality will suffer beyond x5 and there's much air turbulence motion, but what's what video is all about, right ? ;-) hahaha... anyway, thanks if you have time to confirm if x3-10 cropzoom is also available in 4K. Greetings from Switzerland.
I was an avid canon fanboy and switched to Sony. When the eos R came out, I found myself actually rooting for Canon and kind of hoped that this would put them back in the races. But nope.
If one wanted to purchase a camera mostly for video but photography also, would one recommend Mark IV or EOS R? (same price btw) Also is it easier to deal with the crop factor on the EOS R?
Fair review and I think that the "R" series will be an interesting story over the next 18 months or so. The rumour mill seems to suggest that another model will appear next year that is cheaper than this one which is quite a curious thought but also a very high end version is due prior to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The question with this latter model is whether it will be a mirrorless 1DX MkII speed demon or a 5DS high resolution "studio" type camera this is yet to be obvioust however and in either case, it will be pricey and "niche market". My gear is Canon I am primarily a stills shooter and think the main edge that Sony has over Canon lies is their sensors and in particular the speed department which is probably the reason for "missing features", how this will impact Canon with other manufacturers doing FF using Sony chips remains to be seen. For those looking for 4k video in a neat package and at a more affordable price, a Canon M5 MkII will probably be a better solution particularly as Vitrox is launching a speed booster for the mount, such a model with a clutch of upgraded DSLRs are also expected during 2019. The bottom line though is that for the consumer, there are so many exciting options and brands in today's marketplace, there is something for everyone and pretty much at most price points too so we should all be happy.
The second I saw it didn't have the thumb stick the 5Dmarkiii (and A7iii) has ...I said not for me... Was waiting for this but I knew Canon was going to to cut too many corners ...I guess I'll stick with the A7III for another year or 2 ...
Great EOS (R)eview. I love how you mention arguments I didn‘t hear in other reviews! If used just for stills this camera with it‘s lenses should be a workhorse, again. Atleast I think so. But the problem is that they don‘t put every feature they introduced in higher end systems in the EOS R like other companys did. Okay higher end is only C100-C300 for example, but this features would make the EOS R much better with it‘s video. And I don‘t think it would hurt their pro video cameras that much
Ail'enduril Tony is a fucking joke now, he’s always bashing Nikon and Canon. I wouldn’t trust him, he definitely has sold out. I would recommend reviews from verified buyers on BH or amazon before any of these UA-cam fanboys
To who did he sell out to? Where does he bash Canon/nikon without reason? Why is he using the D850 in most of his personal work then? Shop reviews are anonymous and shallow and simply owning it doesn't mean your opinion of the product is accurate (you need to test it against other cameras).
marioslrzn yeah I don‘t really know who to trust. I only trust if I see good examples and facts. Not just opinion. And all this stupid stuff going on between tony and jared, you know, just made me think like you said. Jared just is a weird guy, but I trust him more. He just feels more real. And that‘s what I want: Real reviews. Same with smartphones and stuff. Mkbhd is nice and all, but if you want the realest video: watch flossy carter. I don‘t need cinematic reviews, I just want real talk. Kai is combining this into simple videos. That‘s why he is my favourite with Lol since years.
Ail'enduril because he’s review doesn’t match the reviews given by verified purchase reviews. Go into Amazon or BH and you would think they’re talking about different cameras. Go watch every day dad and he puts them side by side and he gives the good and the bad. Tony outright tells people not to buy canon R or Nikon. His Nikon review was so biased I unsubscribe. I’m not even a Nikon shooter but I know the quality of the images are top notch. He even put the canon R against the A7riii and try to compare images of the pixel shift, when pixel shift doesn’t work unless you’re taking a picture of a wall on a tripod, doesn’t work with moving objects. So 99 percent of people don’t used it and it’s now real world review. I trust froknows because he actually takes the unit and does real world review. He tells you the good and the bad and gives you enough information to make an informative decision. Tony just says it doesn’t have this so don’t buy it when he’s viewers needs are different than his. For photography the canon R is on another level than A7iii. If you vlog in 1080p there’s only one that offers flipout screen. So I’m not telling what to buy, im just stating both cameras offer different benefits try it out before you buy. Not pushing any agenda like all these Sony blind fanboys.
Hello Kai. I'm tempted by the change to replace my Canon 6d (version 1) but what else pulls me back is the adapter, because I have my EF lens kit that I do not want to replace with the new ones, I would like your advice; I have a 24-70 f2.8 L (version 1) that I refuse to stop using. Thank you very much for your contribution. Sorry for my English (I'm still studying) Greetings from Entre Ríos, Argentina.
If I'm wanting to upgrade from my canon 6D mki and want amazing AF (particularly in darker environments), and if I'm not bothered about video, is this is a go to option, over the 6D mkii?
That "touch bar" button gives me anxiety. Either it's easily activated or you waited a few seconds to activate? What the hell were they thinking? Why not place a button or dial near there??
Could you try an EF lens with the RF adapter ? I tried this weekend with my 500 F4 L IS and a 300 F4 L IS and the stabilization was on all the time. Not good at all for the optics and bad for the battery... The canon rep had no answers for us.. Thanks you
Hello. I have one 6d and from yesterday I have a new EOS R. I use Sigma ART 35 and Canon 50, Canon 85. I made some tests for ISO performance with same settings and I saw EOS R is equal with canon 6d up to 6400 ISO. Why? I was thinking EOS R is better than 6d and is equal with 5D mk4 at ISO performance. It is normal ? Or I have a bad copy ? I know 6d was a very good camera for ISO performance but 5D mk4 was better and EOS R has the same sensor like 5D mk4. Wha it the problem ? So I must to return the camera to service ? I had the same light for tests and same objects. I have the latest firmware. 1.6 . Thank you !
This video made me realize I should wait for the next one. I'll keep shooting with my 80D and if I get the itch to jump to full frame I'll probably go Sony.
Your conclusion is accurate. Canon has a new mirrorless system but it's up to it's old habits of crippling the camera design and functionality unnecessarily. It has to be about money. Their assumption must be that this is how you make the most money from your customers. You make a lot of half baked products and sell them at inflated prices because...people will buy them. All the camera manufacturers do it...but Canon is the best at it.
Canon should allow the Tinder app on the Canon EOS R, so that the swipe thing on the camera makes sense.

As wedding photographer I'm looking for an upgrade from my current Canon 6D.
Is it better to invest on EOS R or to buy a used 5d mark iii?
I honestly don’t get why so many people hate on this camera. It does photo and video beautifully. Yes it looks terrible on paper, but it’s a phenomenal camera that will impress. To anyone thinking about buying the EOS R, give it a solid few weeks of real use and you won’t sell it guaranteed.
Great review, as a Canon shooter myself I can't help feeling like all of their products leave you wanting one of their other cameras to pick up where the one you chose leaves off, because they all leave something on the table untill you are shooting the 1DX MKII or "C"series for video
Crop in 4k is for one specific reason: it records 1:1 on a chip, because shrinking it down would cause unwanted artifacts/moire.
Best part of this video for me was... The Ricoh GR. Magical camera for sure.
One of the best reviewers out there!
This is a nice camera for beginners & amateurs stepping out of the Rebel.
That "facepalm" at the end of the video is pure gold XD
I am new to the DSLR world, just got my first one.I got a Canon T7i with the kit lenses and i bought the 24mm pancake the nifty 50 and the 85mm 1.4.I am very happy with it and i look for your videos for guidance,so BOKEH to you!!😂 Thank you K!!.Oh,can you tell me of a TTL on a budget??,Thanks in advance!!.
So I’m not sure where you stand on this new EOS-R camera? I mean will it support your weight and how do you balance on the thing?
Good review Kai. Seems they have left holes in the software with this one. Do you think Canon will give us some firmware fixes? Or is this it? Or maybe the EOS RX will be released after A7S3 and LUMIX Sr-1?
The Eos R does 120 fps in 720 p, has a nice streamline single card slot, no superfluous in body stabilization, and lenses that are a bargain at $3,000. What's not to like?
love that sarcasm !
Still the best in bloody game! Love ya Kai!
Love to see you do a Street shoot with the rf 35mm. That might be the right balance in size and creativity with it’s close focus.
Yep, and the next R will be a smaller model, with that 35mm or a future pancake lens, it should be great for street photography.
Thank you, Kaiman. Outdoor performance is not good IMHO. And size of the lens... I will stick with 6500.
Funny how other "professional reviewers" can't figure that out and put out soft videos and then bashing the camera...
@MLWATKK from what I have seen on my Eos r, activating enhance degrade a bit of quality and enhance plus further degrades quality. It also cropped in a little. I think it may be more beneficial to add EIS in post rather than in camera. But this I cannot test as I have no software or hardware that can do this.
thanks for this info.
Can I ask what made you get this Camera?
@MLWATKK You can watch Matti Haapoja's review. He explained the softness and crop during Digital IS very well. I guess Canon's not very capable Processor is the culprit here.
If you had to rank Nikon, Canon and Sony how would you rank them?
I mean if you had three brands in front of you and you could only pick one camera which camera would that be?
Thank you Kai. Always a vibe.
Cheers.
The photo of the 3 posing girls is really good!
your reviews made my videos better
Invested in the Canon lens system but I'm reluctant to buy anymore of their products. It really feels like features are missing not due to technical limitations but rather fear of pro gear sales cannibalization.
Lenses bigger than EF? Defeats the point of mirror less.
After shooting for 3 hours with this camera I really really like it! It won’t replace my 5D IV... BUT Canon did lots of things right! The viewfinder for example...
It makes fun to shoot!
When they release a pro version of it next year I will buy it ^^
An honest review. Most who review this camera go ga ga for it. I'm glad you pointed out some of the shortcomings.
This camera is the reason i'm switching to Fujifilm.
Keep doing what you do Kai! Always make me laugh
For stills, the 5D IV works pretty well in mirrorless mode (aka Live View), and I don't see how this adds all that much more than the flippy screen.
Thanks for review !!!
I was an avid canon fanboy and switched to Sony. When the eos R came out, I found myself actually rooting for Canon and kind of hoped that this would put them back in the races. But nope.
I don’t know which one is best ? Between canon 5D Mark iii VS Canon EOS R ?
Ok idc about the EOS R i cant wait for that BM Pocket CinemaCam 4K review
Great EOS (R)eview. I love how you mention arguments I didn‘t hear in other reviews!
If used just for stills this camera with it‘s lenses should be a workhorse, again. Atleast I think so.
But the problem is that they don‘t put every feature they introduced in higher end systems in the EOS R like other companys did.
Okay higher end is only C100-C300 for example, but this features would make the EOS R much better with it‘s video. And I don‘t think it would hurt their pro video cameras that much
I heard 0.
Watch Tony Northrup's review and tests for an actual insight into how it performs.
Hey Kai
Love the channel
Thanks dude
Those colours what R makes... ❤ thats perfect!
Yes! waiting for this forever!
Good video as always. Thanks Kai!
Which should i buy? Fujifilm XT3 or this cannon?
Kai, i noticed you posted this vid 5years ago. Will you recommend i purchase the R over an R8? asking because of my budget as well.
I would get the R. It has a superior body and shutter
Nice review man, even after using the camera for a few days I still don't know how I feel about it haha. I still prefer the 5D4 I think,
That "touch bar" button gives me anxiety. Either it's easily activated or you waited a few seconds to activate? What the hell were they thinking? Why not place a button or dial near there??
Do you still have this camera? I'd like to see you do an update video with the new firmware.
love it Kai as per usual.
what camera are you using to record??? is that the ESO R ?
Could you try an EF lens with the RF adapter ? I tried this weekend with my 500 F4 L IS and a 300 F4 L IS and the stabilization was on all the time. Not good at all for the optics and bad for the battery... The canon rep had no answers for us.. Thanks you
I want to start doing portraits and possibly weddings. I really wanted to get this. I don’t do hardly any video. I think I’m buying the 5D iv
No experiences with camera hanging or spontaneously shutting off filming in 1080 or 4k 30fps?
Thank you !
Hey Kai! can you tell me what are you using for you vloging camera/lens?Thanks.
more videos like this... great job dude
Is it the kit lens you were using?
I know that I'll not succeed to get it in my hands on the foreseeable future (of at least seven years) but I'm all up for a review of it from Kai! 😁💥💖
This video made me realize I should wait for the next one. I'll keep shooting with my 80D and if I get the itch to jump to full frame I'll probably go Sony.
Hows it going did you go sony
Exactly! New body and old story! :)
