I will never forget the first time I saw The Birthday Party in London. I later saw them in Sydney and Melbourne on their farewell tour. The show in Melb. was like seeing a circus lead by a crazed bible thumping preacher. Exactly as Rock should be! What I remember about Rowland was he kept walking around in circles like a boxer avoiding punches. In general I still feel they were the greatest live act I've ever seen to this day.
Such a beautiful and interesting interview. Genevieve is so eloquent and charming and such a talented woman. Made me cry, of course, as well as chuckle. ♥️
First time I met Genevieve, she was with Marie Hoy, was at Faraday St where at the time I was playing with babeez, at our rehearsal space. We used to put impromptu concerts on the footpath. Last time she was working in a clothing shop in chapel St. Not long after Roland passed. She was inconsolable.
I saw TIS with Sonic Youth in Sydney at the Kardomah, or Dark Coma as we used to call it. I’d gone to my Sunday midnight to dawn shift job and found I had no work to do. So off to the cross I drove and made it in time for TIS. Fantastic show. Thanks for this. Wonderful interview.
A terrific interview. THank you Genevieve. Thought conjuring, of love, relationships, adventure and more. A privelege to watch. Very grateful. (a Crystal Ballroom survivor). The beautiful honesty is compelling. So much to take in.. The POP CRIMES thing was extraordinary..
Wow. What a genius interview. "Blood in a can! Blood in a can!" should have been a Birthday Party lyric. Would be great to see a volume published of Rowland's writings -- those 3 novels and his Herald Sun reviews etc. etc. I'm sure they would be much better than Cave's Ass Saw the Angel and Bunny McGee rubbish, since Rowland had Celine on his side.
Hi Phaedra, thanks for the message, the caption file had not loaded correctly so thank you for letting us know. It has now been replaced with official subtitles/captions.
She's so intelligent and beautiful- mutually inclusive terms.....wish I could find such a gem of a person with which to be....It's a tragedy these comments may be read as somewhat misogynistic, but it's so rare to find a True Woman who hasn't been infected by societal demands to, I'm sorry, be dumb....Such a tragedy...makes me cry....
You can truly say that scene attracted the best and the brightest.

Thanks for this. Wonderful interview.
Reminded me of many conversations with the two of them sitting n the corner space of the Victory Cafe that Stkilda is long gone sadly
Back in '84? The last resident of St Kilda died in 2016, it seems...
Such a brilliant artist and a wonderful human being.
Best giggle ever!
1,000,000%!
I enjoyed this interview so much. Really interesting to hear about her experience as a woman in a largely male scene. Thank you for this.

Great Long Play Series. Lovely woman. (miss roland...). You should make a LPS about The Triffids (rip d mccomb) an underrated australian band
Have you seen ‘Love in Bright Landscapes’. Beautiful film about Dave and the Triffids. Currently on SBS on demand in Australia. Highly recommend.
