I thought we could already tell that. 😉 I think being glad to come home after a long voyage is in this too. For those that *have* a home, that is. I suppose for some of the old sea dogs the sea probably *is* their home. So then leaving it would be more sad. Even just leaving for a while.
He's supposed to be glad to go home, but sad to leave the ship, at the same time, so it's nostalgic. (Which also seems like it should probably go without saying, but as long as we seem to be already in the business of stating the obvious here, I figured, well then, why not. 😉)
2019's last evening and all the memories of the previous decade. "oh the voyage is done, and the winds dont blow, and its time for us to leave her...."
There is something rather profound in the simplicity of this song. It's a eulogy to life. The "winds don't blow" = the breath/spirit is gone. You are bidding farewell to your body.
"What sort of a john have you got? A great big one, with balconies." Love their introductions, especially this one. 😉 Love the song too. ^____^ This one is really good for finishing up a camping trip or *any* kind of trip. Doesn't necessarily have to be by boat. (Yes, I know it was originally written for that, I'm only saying it has other uses. ^___^)
For instance it reminds me a bit of when Rosie O'Donnell was singing "Leaving on a Jet Plane" at the end of her TV special/film/whatever about "Rosie's Family Cruise". Different song, different memories, different context, but still, it was the end of a voyage and she was singing about leaving, so therefore, similar idea. ^____^
I grew up hearing this song sung by the great Makem and Clancy. I'm so thrilled that this time I typed it into the search engine, it actually came up with them singing it. Thanks for posting.
vilkavec: If there is a Heaven, you belong there for postings these videos. Having been immersed in Makem and Clancy Brother songs these past two months, I thought I had head everything--but then I came across this gem, which I had not heard in years. Thanks much. I've been a fan of the Brothers and Tommy for 40 years. There are many who appreciate and love their music as much as me; but no one who appreciates and loves it more.
The Lyrics: Oh, I thought I heard the old man say Leave her, Johnny, leave her It's a long, hard pull to the next pay day And it's time for us to leave her Chorus: Leave her, Johnny, leave her Oh, leave her, Johnny, leave her Oh, the voyage is done and the winds don't blow And it's time for us to leave her Oh the skipper was bad, but the mate was worse Leave her, Johnny, leave her He'd blow you down with a spite and a curse And it's time for us to leave her (Chorus) Oh, pull you lubbers or you'll get no pay Leave her, Johnny, leave her Oh, pull you lubbers and then be lay And it's time for us to leave her (Chorus) And I thought I heard the old man say Oh, leave her, Johnny, leave her It's a long, hard pull to the next pay day And it's time for us to leave her (Chorus)x2 Hope this helps ya sing along as I do ;)
a friend told me to give this a listen did not to have literal shivers of delight running down my back... now I am sad that I have not heard these two until now
This was the traditional chantey sung at the end of the voyage. While the chorus didn't change, the verses were tailored to describe the voyage. The crew was being paid and dismissed so they could make any comments they wanted without fear of retribution by the officers. This version can be considered a generic version of the chantey.
The High Kings (Finbarr Clancy, Brian Dunphy, Martin Furey and Darren Holden) are releasing this on their next album! Heard it performed live (a capella) this past weekend!
A few of the words are not correct. i.e."spite" should be "spike as in marlin spike" be lay should be belay as to turn up a line on a belaying pin to secure the line. Sorry but the seaman in me had to correct that.
He's talking about the lyrics in the description. Which seems to be the case for all the lyrics this channel offers in the descriptions, this one being the closest I've seen :P The lyrics under "Rocky Road to Dublin" and "Mary Mack" are all sorts of screwed up.
In reality, this was a pump out shanty. The sailors on the pumps sung this to keep in rhythm when they pumped out the ship for the final time as they returned to the dock. Sorry, but it had nothing to do with press gangs or mutiny. It did had to do with work though.
I think this is the most beautiful version. 😍 If you want a good laugh though then just try turning on the closed captioning. It so does not know the words. 😉
oh i thought i heard the old man say leave her Johnny oh leave her Johnny all the voyages done and the winds don't blow and it's time for us to leave her
What he really said at the beginning. "We've no intention of leaving. We were only codding. Quit yer codding and court me right or give me back me fourpence." You should see what the closed captioning thing thinks it is. Cardinal? Oh, really. By the way it took me a lot of listening to be able to hear what he really said.
Closed captioning says: "we're no tension of leaving surely cotton mature Cardinal Court rewriter give me back before once". Really? Hmmm. Nonsense. And here we all thought autocorrect was insane. 🙄😒😑😏😕🙃🙄
Closed captioning also says "liebherr Johnny Weaver" followed in the next chorus by "we were jon oliva". @___@ Er...really??? This thing is insane. 🙄😒😑😴🙃😏🙄
Jan Polaczek I think her is the potato famine because this was made during the potato famine in Ireland where Irish people left Ireland to America to earn money but most ended up broke
We left her, alright. The drunken capt'n cut a buoy and took off her keel. On a calm sea off the point, you can still see her bones 50 years later, but I'm old and will never see her again save in my dreams. I am all that's left of the crew. Fred Jack
actually.. every time you hear an old drinkin song, general folk song, or shanty, the lyrics are always different. hard for strangers to sing along for the first time but its fun to hear the differences. Know the song I'm A Rover? i know it as "I'm a rover, scarsely sober, im a rover by decree" yet ive heard others say "im a rover, SELDOM sober, im a rover OF HIGH DEGREE" used to be my job to do these songs and i never heard the same version twice by others.
Goats3 Luke Kelly, for example. Good info, OP is probably here from AC4. Nothing wrong with that; it's good to see people getting into this kind of thing. I don't feel so alone anymore.
At first I though this song was about a broke man with multi-personality disorder having to leave his girlfriend. Then I thought it was about leaving Ireland. Only recently did I realize it’s about a sailor leaving his ship.
As with all folk songs, there are a million versions available. And naturally everyone's going to prefer different ones. I enjoy the shit out of Makem and Clancy but when it comes to sea shanties I'd rather hear a mass of men singing along.
Rest ye gentle now lads..Pat, tom, Liam and Tommy darlin...for the sake of recordings like this, ye'll never leave us...Oiche maith, Slan!
The meaning of the song is that a voyager named johnny misses the voyages on his ship with his crew. The "her" is the ship.
Ahaaaaaa
I thought we could already tell that. 😉
I think being glad to come home after a long voyage is in this too.
For those that *have* a home, that is.
I suppose for some of the old sea dogs the sea probably *is* their home.
So then leaving it would be more sad.
Even just leaving for a while.
Thank you for telling us.
Very true
I'll admit, AC4 brought me here. But at least it got me into sea shanties. And for that I'm thankful
AC4 is getting lots of people into good old traditional shanty singing.
Nothing wrong with that!
what is ac4?
tank2449 the game assassin’s creed 4
ah was this song in the game?
and many more
Ah, the banter at the beginning. That's what folk music is all about.
Yes assassins creed 4 brought me here but. This calms me down and leaves me feeling really happy
Best shanty ever.
Darp "Roll the old chariot" would disagree 🖒
Haul away joe dissagres as well.
Trust me most shanties are amazing
How about sea shanty 2?
You can hear the song 100 times without be boring
I think by now I have. And not been bored so far. ^____^
Love this song, most especially their version. ^___^ Forever ever. ❤💙💜
@@julistarling8382 coda has an excellent rendition. It's very good 👍
What a great heritage! Suppose this song was forgotten.... Thanks Tommy and Liam.
Not anymore! It has become famous.
I personally enjoy the banter
That's part of the fun of Irish concerts, their back and forth sass. Clancy and Makem were professionals at it.
There is something rather profound in the simplicity of this song. It's a eulogy to life. The "winds don't blow" = the breath/spirit is gone. You are bidding farewell to your body.
I grew up listening to these guys. Being the son of a fisherman kinda gets ya into this music.
tommy makem , the beautiful blackbird of keady

Love the song too. ^____^

Beaut! Love that tenor/bass harmony in the chorus.

Once more like you mean it, tell 'em Liam!
2:21 For those who wants to skip to the song.
Who would want to do that? These guys are great lol
Thanks buddy
+Pk4En9 It's 2:40 :-)
Ottar Sande No. The instrumental is very important part of the song.
But the banter is so good!
What the heck is it about Makem & Clancy that they so well do emotionally charged songs.
I know. Whenever I hear them doing songs like this some bastard starts peeling onions.
Lovely

very nice song
The Lyrics:
Oh, I thought I heard the old man say
Leave her, Johnny, leave her
It's a long, hard pull to the next pay day
And it's time for us to leave her
Chorus:
Leave her, Johnny, leave her
Oh, leave her, Johnny, leave her
Oh, the voyage is done and the winds don't blow
And it's time for us to leave her
Oh the skipper was bad, but the mate was worse
Leave her, Johnny, leave her
He'd blow you down with a spite and a curse
And it's time for us to leave her
(Chorus)
Oh, pull you lubbers or you'll get no pay
Leave her, Johnny, leave her
Oh, pull you lubbers and then be lay
And it's time for us to leave her
(Chorus)
And I thought I heard the old man say
Oh, leave her, Johnny, leave her
It's a long, hard pull to the next pay day
And it's time for us to leave her

Hope this helps ya sing along as I do ;)
Thanks!!

hallelujah 🙌🏻
this was sung coming into port, it was a sailors way of telling her capt, he could find another crew.
The band ever...
Shan Van Vocht Indeed!
2020 anyone ?
I was just thinking, this would be a great song for closing out this year.
@@bros4654 yes bro

They should have done comedy :).
Thank you so much
Spasibo.
AMAZING
It was the crew if the Jackdaw the brought me here. AC4 has gotten shanties into my head and this shanty is my favorite of them all

that's right leave her Johnny
i love it
And its greAt thar ac brought u here, however u can leave that at the door. This be music, nthis be spirit soul

In AC4 this is located in the swamp at Nassau. Tip: stand where the shanty is located and wait for it to re-appear. Easy mode for collecting them.
Rain 3 hours/Relaxing Sleep Sound ....... Seems it's really important I let everyone know how i got here! On a completely unrelated matter, nice song!
ui
Would it be OK if I cut out the talking and reposted this to my channel, or could you do it on yours? Love this song so much.
I think this is the most beautiful version. 😍

Assassin's creed! Yes please!
Dammit I've never been on a boat, but why does this affect me so?!
This is the original version?
No
It's been sang by many folk singers over the decades, it's a song dating back to late 1800s to early 1900s... Great shanty song 🎵 👌
assassins creed black flag
Dunno why but sea shanties always make me think of Battlestar Galactica, and I mean to the ship herself. Hears to the Grand Old Lady, so say we all.
All AC4 kids, you don't say : D!?
I just realised that "her" means the ship here as well.
To be frank, it can mean anything you want it to
It's the only "Her".
Jan Polaczek I think her is the potato famine because this was made during the potato famine in Ireland where Irish people left Ireland to America to earn money but most ended up broke
Ships are gender feminine in most European languages
WuffleMuffin Ong Expect it was made during the Golden Age of Piracy AKA 300 years too early.
full sail lats
This is in Assassins Creed 4!!!
Sarcasm detected
Good ear buddy
this is the original?
How do I find this shanty in AC4
Kingston on a tower=)
AlexhunterReally X O YOU ARE AWESOME

So this is the original one
Ok we get it. AC4 brought you here, can you shut up and enjoy the song no matter where you found it.
Fuck off. People can say whatever they want.
kieramcgregor as can I
Honestly though, AC4 really stared me loving sea shanties
Ur the kind of person that no1 would want to listen to
Just let people say what they want let there be peace please I beg of you

I want to hear more music and less bullshit.
anyone else think the AC4 version is better?
As with all folk songs, there are a million versions available. And naturally everyone's going to prefer different ones.

Terrible. Ruined it
