  • Hi! My name is Crane. In this video, I will share with you how I cut flowers from my home garden in Spring, make mason jar bouquets, set up the roadside stand, and increase sell using social media. I will also share tips, advice as side hustle and small flower farm and business, and challenges that I normally face.
About Me: I grow cut flowers in my suburban cottage home garden in a naturalistic style in New Jersey Zone 7. I make garden bouquets and sell at the roadside stand in front of my house. I also grow all kinds of vegetables and, sometimes, cook. I grow ornamental landscape plants and trees as well as create sanctuary for wildlife, birds, insects, etc. Thank very much for visiting my channel. Any question, please let me know in the comment.

Inspiring can be measured in many different ways.............. not just in what's sold. It is clear how much work you put into your flowers and your videos. Showing the ups and downs is equally inspiring. And necessary for us to see that its not easy to do what you do, that you put so much work into your designs.

Hi Crane thank you once again for taking us with you as you prepare for your weekend sale. You both bring so much joy to your followers. Your humility and love for your flowers is contagious. Each bouquet you create is destined for just the perfect person and if you don’t sell one it’s because it was meant to be. That one bouquet that was left to be given as a gift to your co-worker… wishing you both smiles and peace

Your bouquets are absolutely stunning! I am very similar to you in that I have been gardening since I was young but just a few years ago discovered the idea that I could sell my flowers and share my garden with others. Your videos have helped me get some great information and confidence to do that!Thank you so much for your honesty, Crane. Keep being you and sharing with us!

This video is VERY inspiring! The "downs" of gardening, business, and just life in general are relatable to everyone. Even through your dissapointment you were empathetic to others like full-time flower farmers, which just shows how kind your heart is. Your love for your flowers glows in every video, whether you're sharing the ups or downs! 🌷💕

Your flowers and bouquets are beautiful! Do customers bring back the mason jars? Maybe you could give them $1or $2 off their next bouquet if they return the jar. Have you thought about a weekly bouquet membership or flower of the month club? Do you ever sell bouquets without the water/jars and have longer stems? Daffodils are on the "dirty dozen" flower list. Put a CVBN tab in the harvest container with the daffodils. It kills the bacteria that is the result of the stems dumping bacteria into the water. Treat the flowers for at least 4 hours and up to 3 days. This will help the stems last longer in the vase. Keep up the good work! Love your videos.

I just planted the Earlicheer in my garden this fall and I think they're cute too! 😊 I'm not sure about having too many, though, because I don't like the smell of paperwhites which have a similar scent (Earlicheer not as strongly scented). Thank you for walking us through your bouquet making process!!! The bouquets and photos are beautiful- you are right about no camera capturing the beauty! 😍 Hmmm... even if the flowers don't get honored by someone buying them, they had much more attention from you than most (appreciating them in the garden, thoughtfully considering them as you made the bouquet, etc.). Also, ones not sold could go to hospitals, assisted living homes, homeless (along w/ food)? There was a project I did with kids called a "birthday box" (I didn't create this project) whereby we collected supplies to make birthday party in boxes (cake mix, container of frosting, streamers, balloons, etc.) and donated them to a homeless shelter (called ahead); maybe the flowers could be part of that? If this is too much work, maybe one of your flower friends would like to do this and you can just donate the bouquets no one bought? Of course, reusing and keeping for yourself works too! 😂 You are still very inspiring and I think they will sell many raffle tickets!!❤❤

You’re right! You can’t capture in a single photo all the nuances of beauty of nature you get in real life as it changes throughout the day, the changes in weather, the way a beautiful fragrant plant can arrest you from your thoughts on a walk. You put so much work into your beautiful creations. And your heart. As I’ve said before, those close to you are so fortunate to be able to take advantage of such art so easily.

I can understand you so well!! Last year when I started, I offered my flowers on the farm stand and on the market in our tiny town and a village besides ours. It was so horribly difficult!! It hurt me so much, because I wasn't able to use so many of my tulips and other flowers! And I had the additional pressure to make at least a tiny living of it in a two years plan. 😅 So this year I tried out a new market and it went so much better! But I know the thoughts one has, when you don't sell out. For me it was helpful to see, that this can even happen at your road side stand and it has nothing to do with your wonderful bouquets. Everyone has to love them, they are sooo gorgeous!! Sometimes people don't have enough time (or money) to have a look and to be honest: to sell during a rain period is always tough! Thank you for showing also this tough part of the flower business, it helps me dealing with those items in my own life and it shows me, that I'm not alone with that. Have a nice week my dear flower friend!! Greetings from denmark!! 🤗🌻💖

Your garden looks very lovely, and you have an impressive variety of interesting and unique flowers so early in the season. Given plenty of traffic, the rate of sales may boil down to value vs. your customer's disposable income. It's hard to judge what the 'right' price is for fresh, beautiful flowers. In my location, $30 would be high for roadside mason jars, but it may be typical in yours.

Hello Crane, it is always refreshing watching. I really like your videos. You flowers and bouquets always look good. It is normal to be anxious when you sell anything regardless of where you sell from. You know what, your hope is stronger than the anxiety. The mere fact that you harvested, conditioned and arranged the flowers and set up the stand shows that hope. Just keep the hope growing. As hope grows, anxiety will reduce. Keep going.

I like that you don"t pull up the tulip bulbs. I also cut above the lower leaves so there is a future flower. It seems like a flower crime to pull the bulbs and compost them.

I did pull the bulbs last year and I felt so bad. I also learned that the bulbs that I didn’t pull from last year they bloom again too 😭😭😭 I would have had more tulip this year if I didn’t do that.

@@cranerygardens Not all tulips naturalize. The Darwin Hybrid Tulips are the best at naturalizing/coming back every year. Maybe customers would be more interested in some of the specialty tulips like Parrot tulips, Double Peony tulips or Fringed tulips. Blooms they can't find at the grocery store.

Hi Crane! Another beautiful and inspiring video - thank you!! I appreciate your honesty in sharing your disappointment when you don't sell your flowers. But that's how sales go, sometimes weather and other circumstances beyond our control affect our sales. Can I ask? What refrigeration do you use and what temperature is it set at? We're thinking of building a cold room in the garage with an air conditioner unit. Or is it better to buy a refrigerator vs. a commercial florist refrigerator which are very expensive. I'm thinking of doing the local farmers market once a week, if I can produce enough flowers. This year is my test year for growing cut flowers from seed, as my husband built 6 new raised beds. Also hope by next year I can cut from my existing hydrangea and rose bushes.

Hi! Thank you 🥰 and congrats yayy!! I don’t really need the refrigerator. We just happen to have a spare one. When you grow seasonal flowers you cut right the day before arranging them, they can stay even longer than flowers from super market. In spring you can store cool flowers in your frost free shed or garage. A lot of summer flowers don’t like to be fringed too, like zinnias, basils. You can leave some of the extra flowers in the garden for yourself instead of storing them too. 😊🥰❤️ I would wait to see how this year goes first. Maybe someone in your family is getting rid of their old fridge soon too.

I’m about an hour away. What would be a safe time to come on a Saturday morning to get a bouquet?
