My Mom, who got me into music as a kid by playing nothing but 1950's-60's American rock and roll through her album collection, took my sister and me to see LaBamba in 1987 and that's where I first learned about "The day the music died." I remember my Mom telling me "That's what that song is about that you sing" (Don McLean's song was on the radio all the time when I was a kid in the 1980's in Buffalo, N.Y. WRG55). My Mom died in Dec. 2017 but she left me her record collection and the music lives on and always will as my daughter loves the old songs too.

Waylon's music is as real as real gets. How many people have said similar things as Waylon did to Buddy? It's so sad that, this time, the tragedy came true.

I really think if buddy holly had lived it would have changed the trajectory of rock and roll. He would have been McCartney like, really creative. He also would have made our accent a whole lot cooler.

He was already changing the music of that time. He had started to incorporate strings into his music. Songs like Everyday. That was groundbreaking for that era.

I still remember I felt like crying when I heard on the radio about Buddy Holley's death. It was very sad for all of us who liked his songs and not only his those of Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper who also died that fatal day. One of my pals said: B******t! where are we going to find a singer like Him?

I've always felt bad for Waylon when he was still alive. It's so sad to think that he'd blame himself for something that way out of his control. Mind you, little did he realize that, his late friend was having nightmares of him dying. Yes, for years, Buddy Holly would wake up each morning beside his wife, just sweating severely & his heart racing very heavily. The reason? He'd wake up & realize that he dreamed that he died in a plane crash. Yes, Buddy already knew years before that tragic day, that he'd 1 day die in a plane crash. That's why he was so wanting to get married, etc... because, he knew his fate & foreseen the end result way before it happened. So sad. :( This info. & so much more comes from a VHS Documentary that I had bought years ago called, "The Real Buddy Holly Story". It's narrated by non other than, "Paul McCartney" of the Rock N Roll Band, "The Beatles"; who owns All rights to Buddy Holly's music, etc... Yes, he was always such a fan of Buddy's that he said that he bought the rights to his music so that Buddy Holly's music would live on forever. He was a huge fan & very good friend of his. He always said the Buddy was his musical hero & mentor to. Therefore, Paul wanted to make sure that the truth be told about Buddy Holly; since, the movie that was made called, "The Buddy Holly Story", was certainly not accurate. So, if you're as big of a fan of Buddy's as I am. Trust me, you'll want to watch & own "The Real Buddy Holly Story". Both told & narrated by Paul McCartney himself. Paul interviews everybody from Buddy's family, his band The Crickets & many others. I'm sure you'll enjoy watching it. I sure did. Hope this helps you some. Take care & God bless. :)

Music Lover's Favorites that is fucking hilarious that you actually thought that it was necessary to explain that McCartney was in the "Rock and roll" band called the Beatles!!! for real I laughed so hard that I nearly pissed myself. how old are you incidentally?? merely curious, no disrespect intended. so you watched some antiquated VHS tape was it? honestly I don't recall if it was that or a book that you had acquired. anyway so now you fancy yourself a Beatleologist? truly with all due respect, did you live in the era? ever experience the Beatles in concert? or the Stone's? Yardbirds? etcetera, etcetera. for r it might be far better for you to view this excellent material, soak up ALL that you can. p/s I think it is very very cool that you enjoy this beautiful music and the associated cultural diversity and phenomenon that accompany's but I am of the opinion that you would save yourself the possibility of enormous amounts of embarrassment by resisting the urge to comment, especially "correct" certain fact's
best to leave that to the big boys.

Buddy Holly may have influenced more musicians than almost any modern musician, at least for rock. The Beatles said they named themselves after the Crickets. It is interesting that Buddy Holly, Waylon Jennings, Tanya Tucker, Roy Orbison, Joe Ely, and so many others came out of the same area of West Texas.

as a kid I grew up listening to Buddy Holly the big bopper and Ritchie Valens it wasn't until I got older I heard the story of how they died !! I finally understood bye bye Miss American pie, because Ritchie Valens ,big bopper and Buddy Holly were the three biggest music artists of their time Elvis was in the army and there really was no other music besides those three !! I like to think that when Waylon Jennings died the big bopper was standing there waiting for him, and jokingly said to him "thanks a lot jerk but don't worry pal it wasn't your fault. Come on the rest of the guys are waiting we got some music right " .

Speaking for myself, I'm glad Waylon was gracious enough to give up his seat. Waylon is my favorite singer of all time. Actually since the '70's, I grew up in a bar in TX, did my homework on the bar, washed beer mugs and put them back in the freezer. We ran gill nets, got caught & let go the same night, but they took our net. I'm 55 now, and I guess that was more than fair.

Buddy Holly was so far ahead of his time it is hard to put it into words. He accomplished
more in his 22 years than many do in a full life time. He left behind a vast catalog of music
much of what he wrote or collaborated on. He was always experimenting and trying to
improve or enhance his sound. Buddy had not even scratched the surface of his immense
talent. His career barely lasted 18 months and he only had a few hits that made the charts
( that is what happens when you die before you can fully establish yourself) but he is possibly the most influential artist in history but his legacy will out last all of us.

It was Tommy Allsup who did the coin flip with Ritchie Valens. Dion never once disputed this until 50 years later when he wrote a book and he never mentioned it in his first biography written in the 1980's. People have been wondering why Dion has chosen this narrative only 50 years later. Ritchie's family doesn't buy it. They've always known Allsup flipped the coin with Ritchie. In fact, Allsup once ran a bar in Texas called "Heads Up" because of the coin flip. It's believed the Rock N' Roll Hall Of Fame wanted a certain narrative and Dion is a bigger name.

Waylon lived a life of hardcore alcohol and drug abuse. I'm sure that one stupid sentence haunted him for the rest of his life. He probably was just joking like you said, but the emotional pain he suffered was far worse than dying in the crash.
No matter how popular or rich he was, having to think about that situation would enter his mind on a daily if not weekly occurrence.
No disrespect to Waylon, I have always been a big fan.

I'm 15, and I can't even begin to imagine what their families felt, and even what their fans felt because you almost feel guilty because you know that they would have lived if they weren't in the music industry. If only someone had stopped the money hungry managers and paid the people who were making the money in the first place perhaps they could have been able to afford a proper bus with heat. Rest in peace Buddy, Richie, and J.P.

His was my favorite voice of the four greats on The Highwayman song, and while I always knew of him and a bit around the edges more, I was fortunate enough to meet him, in nineteen hundred and eighty four, before he was to get on his tour bus (hotel job back home summers and such, first year of college or so...eighty five, possibly).
He was well worn from his life and the road, but not for nothing, to you two (West and Herat), he took his time and was genuinely kind and friendly to myself, a chauffeur and maybe one or two others. That vibe that you get, not even a vibe, just a fellow traveling, loving, suffering earthling.
Still have the autograph, on my old jobs' hotel stationary. Thanks to youtube, and a friend spending a year in China emailing me about The Highwayman song, last year plus, I have and can dabble more into W.J.

I wish I was born in 1910-30 because music and everything seemed better then. Being only 13 I'm often picked on for this reason and I hate new music. I'll never go to a Sinatra concert or John Denver or Johnny cash or Buddy Holly and all the others. I've often thought "there were good musicians after 1959" then I thought "none of them were born after 1959" so 1959 is really the day talented musicians stopped being born. I hope I didn't waste to much of your time! have a good day!

Teenagers like to think of themselves as unique. But when they run into someone who truly is unique, outside their norm, they pick on him. It's always been that way. I'm sorry. In time they will see their mistake, but that doesn't help you now. Everyone I know that had ever pick on someone that was different, was sorry about it when the were older. Someday they will see you really were the unique one. Have you tried listening to Tom Petty? I too enjoy the old stuff, but like Tom's work too.

Mathieu, don't get disillusioned, there are many, many talented musicians out there. Some are waiting in the wings, some don't want to be found, and others are out there living the dream, just not making waves. I know that you're only 13 and some of the language may a bit rough, or the style may not appeal to you, but take a look at the Austin, Tx. music scene. I'm an old geezer compared to you, but right now, two of my favorites are Grady and Javi Garcia. The best place to find good talent is at live venues in your own back yard. I like blues and rock and ran across Ian Moore playing in an old steakhouse in Buffalo Gap, Tx. back in the late 80's and was blown away by his talent. Another "kid" that blew me away was Kenny Wayne Shepherd who was playing at a local animal shelter fundraiser in San Antonio. Wherever you live, just keep your ears open, the talent and heart is out there, just ignore the media hype that so many fall into.

Apparently, all three went to the dealership after the first big record deal ( don't know the details) and Buddy chose an Ariel as well as one of the other guys and one of them chose a Triumph.
Imagine being so young with an infusion of cold hard cash. they could walk in and plunk down cash on whatever they wanted.
Powerful, fast motorbikes were new back then. 100 MPH was scary fast considering the handling.

Was Buddy a guy who might've - as the plane was going down - cracked wise about Waylon's curse upon him? I sincerely hope Mr. Jennings appreciated the profound comedic gift he had bestowed upon his friend. In the face of certain doom, there can't be much better than a hearty laugh.
