- As recently as the mid-1800s, many scientists believed that the deep ocean's bottom was lifeless, featureless abyss. This changed with the development of bathymetric maps of the seafloor, which revealed some of the world's largest geological features. Global bathymetric maps have captured the publics' attention and helped revolutionize our understanding of the Earth.

0:35 distribution of depth along Atlantic Ocean (CMIIW)
1:35 the different between topography and bathymetry
2:30 continental shelf
3:00 slopes, continuation of plain part of continental shelvf
3:53 small feature, sea bottom canyon
3:56 rise, after slope (part of continental shelf)

Topography is fascinating!
It's amazing that there's so much to respectfully conserve and protect.
All videos of "Science primer" are of excellent quality... outstanding explanation with lots of information.. Surely this video too is not an exception.
Thanks so much for the kind words. Glad you find the videos informative.
I have watched a few of your videos regarding the oceans and they are great summaries for the course I am currently taking!
Glad the helped! Thanks for commenting.
Great video. The ranges and trenches of the deep ocean fascinate me. Thanks for making this informative content, SciencePrimer.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Very well made video!! Thank you for your work.

All the fancy computer images almost distracts from the largest flat area on the face of the Earth.
Point taken, but to be fair, the goal of the video is broader than simply trying to give the viewer a sense of the scale of the abyssal plains. If that had been the primary goal, I'd have approached the visuals differently.
the best thing since big chungus
Thanks... I think?
if the abyssinal plain is large flat ares below the sea doesnt that mean the earth is flat?
no
@@SciencePrimer of course it does
It's obvious. Beautiful isn't it
