This game was not a game… this was an absolute masterpiece of entertainment, this was an experience.
I like to call it the pinnacle of all art.
Masterpiece in music, acting, cinematography, coding. All together to create an interactive art piece. Something nothing else can do outside of video games
@@itspure7152 💯
Well I wouldn’t call it a masterpiece of coding… there have been quite a few glitches… nothing game breaking… but still noticeable… otherwise it has been one of the best games I’ve ever played
@@christopherbrown7230 no games exist without glitches. No games are perfect.
@@maxcanonstunner6532 I feel like there are some pacing issues as well in the story mainly towards the end . But all in all 9/10 game for me .
I appreciate how his soundtracks are always different but at the same time you can immediately say "yup that's Bear!"
25:28 brings tears to my eyes, this is where Kratos sees he’ll be a god that’s loved. A beautiful moment.
same here :(
Tears have been shed 😭
Same, I need to know what's next for Kratos 😭
Cmon I was shedding tears from the damn start haha
@@QastletheKing to be fair same, fenrir kiled me
The theme at 5:30 is the motif often used for Faye, Atreus' mother and Kratos' wife.
Also I feel like the mixing on this whole soundtrack is phenomenal.
i like to think that its included in this version of the soundtrack and not the original GOW 2018 one because we see kratos having more visions of faye, and him being more connected to her than the first game
I wish they would make the music a bit more prominent though.. theres so much music, but its usually very quiet in the background
I played 2018 and Ragnarok back to back just after reading the book and binging the soundtrack like a dozen times, including the orginal games .... so all the musical motifs would hit me so hard omg it was mental. My brain would die when I heard call backs to the orignal games
@@RobinsMusic wear headphones is all I can say. Alot of people say they don't notice music and games and that's either lack of headphones so the sound gets muddied, or the player is getting to sweaty while playing and can focus on anything but gaming and getting heated. Put it this way, people that hear VG music and enjoy it aren't worried about there rank in an online game lmao. Sweat lords like that don't actually like art lmao
@@theblueassassin Considering Atreus's theme appears right after Faye's, you're prob right. The fact that all their themes are played at the same time along with Kratos's symbolizes how he's connected with them more and has developed a better relationship with them (Faye's relationship being in his mind obviously, through memory)
This is GOTY and I understand how people would say elden ring I really do. However, the way Santa Monica Studios has raised the expectations in terms of acting, story telling, music and world building is just unreal.
Yes, even though I fully understand the choice of Elden Ring, since I myself support it, Ragnarok deserves it's own GOTY just for the pure cinematic experience it is, even though in gameplay terms it's a simple, old but proven concept. Ragnarok deserves the title as much as Elden Ring, it was beautiful.
@@tomclanys I think the first game dampered the experience of this game a little bit. If somehow this game was a stand alone and people forgot the experience of GOW 2018 I think people would like it even more. Similar to Doom 2016 and Doom eternals.
@@sagivijayaramaraju1153but GOW2018 got game of the year?
@@haydenbarrows1139 yes
Yeah, it's a really hard choice. I just completed everything after 70 hours, and I was awestruck by how much they improved on what was already a masterpiece in 2018. But Elden Ring just is in its own category. So much to find if you look. Real rewards for being curious and following leads and hunches. Must have spent 15 hours with lore videos alone.
The two games are just two almost opposite games than can barely be compared, let alone judged on the same criteria.
Kratos crying is probably the most heart-wrenching thing I've ever seen.
Which part are you referencing? There were a couple of moments
@@YouSusBoy Pretty much every time but especially the end when he saw himself as the champion on the mural.
@@sledgedragon2677 I like how the game made us think Atreus was supposed to be the champion when in reality it was Kratos this whole time
he never cried he just came kinda close
@@YouSusBoy Freya was right 👌
Sucks that you skipped Raeb's Lament. Probably the most moving piece out of the entire game
Agreed, and the fact it uses the same melody from an earlier "happy" theme and turns it sad to represent the same characters is insane
Yeah the way it plays out was very heartbreaking to watch 😢.
He missed the last minute of vanaheim too. It is absolutely insane.
yes. the greatest music of the entire game
The fact that you can just hear the song and play it immediately is so impressive
That’s relative pitch or perfect pitch for you.
28:05 Never has a musical score hit SO perfectly for me as right there. Unexpected, big, brash and beautiful, exactly how I felt about these games
Bear's music for these games is monumental, especially from a thematic perspective. His themes for Kratos, Faye, Atreus, Freya, Baldur, the Jotnar, the Aesir, and the Valkyrie are just top tier compositions to my ears (I mean, they all are). Kratos' theme has to be one of the best I've heard in the last couple of decades, and "Lullaby of the Giants" is a strong personal favorite.
even his themes for Brok and Sindri give me goose bumps
Its just Bear
Whatever he makes is monumental
Where's "Blood Upon the Snow". That was by far the best music/soundtrack I've heard in any game
20:40 Ragnarok is my favorite OST in the game/album
Same pinch
@@nelvinshiji6921 kinda reminds me of A Hunter Gathers OST from Zack SNYDER’s Justice League
“I enjoy your story Kratos, Pity it must end so soon”
28:02 this has got to be the most epic sounding moment in any video game soundtrack ever
Frrrrr 😂
My favourite tracks have to be God of War Ragnarök, Ragnarök, Svartalfheim, Gryla, The Hammer of Thor, Raeb's Lament and Letting Go. Gryla The Hammer of Thor and Raeb's Lament are all pretty unique songs from each other but all invoke some pretty intense emotions especially in the context of what they're for and Svartalfheim is just plain epic. I hope you get around to doing another video on this OST because I'd really like to see your reactions to the rest of the soundtrack
You just has to say that your favourite tracks are literally all of the game xddddddd
Mine is lullaby of the giants from previous game including all these.
You skipped over some good ones. Hammer of Thor and All Father are my favourites
Ain't nothing beating "Ragnarök" tho. The song that comes up when Kratos does the thing.
the instant i heard Ragnarok in that first cutscene with the Norns i got chills all over
They did preview it there!!! I got chills to man such a tease at the part to 😂
I love how the Kratos's laitmotiv is heavy and dark for all the 1st game and a good chunk of the 2nd, but progressively got more lighter and more peacefully and by the end it's a theme for a man who regained his will to live. But you can fell all the pain and scars of the Kratos's souls in the back, they will never go. His dark memories are still there. But through it all he was able to turn the page, become a better god, a better man, a better father and finally get the happy ending he deserved.
Imagine listening to this during a live orchestra. I would have chills and goosebumps throughout the whole performance...and most likely be in tears by the end. This legendary game experience will never be forgotten.
Love love LOVE Bear's work. He also did the new Lord of the Rings : Rings of Power soundtrack! God of War is absolutely fantastic if you've not enjoyed before.
I have his soundtrack to Masters of the Universe: Revelation as well. I loved that show and been buying the figures and I had to have Bear's awesome soundtrack too. He's definitely one of my fave modern composers for sure.
He’s also done Godzilla King of the Monsters, which is another gem of his
As well as the walking dead at one point
Having been a trumpet player for 14 years, playing in brass ensembles, trumpet ensembles, jazz bands, wind ensembles, orchestras, symphony orchestras, and having been a gamer for even longer, the last two God of War games have been unreal. The OST is perfect and while most would simply enjoy it, any long time musician would recognize just how insanely good it really is. I often found myself getting emotional not only with the music, but with the scenes that accompanied it.
Interesting take away from The Huldra Brothers. One is open and the other is gritty, which could also be a direct correlation to Brok and Sindri, the two huldra brothers.
Awesome review man.
Only a guy named bear can compose something like this
It's so great to hear music being taken seriously in gaming.
Sad to see you skipped over Raeb's lament. One of the strongest tracks
W
you gotta listen to Blood upon the Snow dude
Goated song
I was hoping you would react to The Hammer of Thor. That was my favorite track from the game. Such a nice battle sound as Deliverance was in the 2018 game.
If you liked this from Bear i think you'll like the Godzilla King of the monsters soundtrack. He made an incredible work in that film.
This soundrak is even better in the game when you are in the final act right before Kratos uses the Horn 📯. It was so epic.
At 6:50 I believe that’s the first track. Weird that it shows up for Giantess of Ironwood. Angrboda’s theme is sick🤙🏼
Its before the horn is blown
It's apart of the main theme. I guess the person who uploaded the video forgot to upload the correct music for Giantess of Ironwood and used the second half of the main theme instead.
This is great, awesome video, was kinda hoping "Raeb's lament" was there tho
Awesome walkthrough Zach! I’ve played GOW and never knew who the composer was. Bear rocks and it‘s fun to share the goosebumps with another orchestration nerd lol… His use of percussion brings out the classical headbanger in me! Personally I love your idea about distant chords over a pedal. 😊
Dude you're going to love "Raebs Lament" from the Ragnarok soundtrack as well. because it's basically a solo Hurdy Gurdy track! If possible please react to it as well!
Raeb's lament and blood upon the snow are my favourite
One thing I realized; spell Raeb backwards. Then search who does the voice for Raeb in the game.
@@ENCELADUSCompositions It's the composer Bear McCreary himself, it's not just him voicing his own in game character.
@@puckpuck18 blood upon the snow is a musical masterpiece
I remember that Bear McCreary also did a "Gaeatas Lament" for Battlestar Galactica. I wonder if that's where he got the inspiration.
An absolutely incredible soundtrack. I’m in tears. That’s how you know you have an award winning soundtrack: when it gives people goosebumps, brings them to tears, and evokes emotions that just feel overwhelming. Composers are absolute geniuses.
Siiir, you skipped "Raeb's lament" and it is the most emotional track of the game
I wish they’d had the music during the Gjallarhorn scene uploaded. I can’t seem to find it anywhere, but it’s probably one of the best music scenes in the whole game
Fairly certain it's just the main theme
It’s the last 50 seconds of the main theme
The “Giantess of Ironwood” is actually the second half of the main theme. It’s just time stamped incorrectly
25:24 i do believe that this is the best part of the soundtrack...the ending soundtrack is so beautiful and very well made. This game deserves the award for the best soundtrack! 🪓🗡️🔨❄️🔥⚡
What’s the name of the song please?
@@MrKidKnockout Letting Go
Raebs lament is probably my favourite, I think it’s used at some of the most emotional moments in the game relating to sindri.
Yes it plays in the background when they push the boat with Brok on it. I never noticed until I saw this video that Raebs lament is actually a sad kinda version of the hulda brothers song which makes it even more sad because one is dead and the other broken and this version shows that.
@@nathanmonstrey1785 I’m pretty sure that melody in Raeb’s lament is used for most scenes involving the dwarves
I heard you loud and clear haha--my reaction to Raeb's Lament is at the end of this video!
ua-cam.com/video/eFAY5B8ldXw/v-deo.html
I was hoping you'd catch what Bear did for Atreus' theme. In one of his behind the scenes interviews he said he reversed it from Kratos' theme notes. I wonder if anyone caught that before his interview 🤔
This level of appreciation and breakdown for the music is truly amazing. Just subbed brother keep up the great work. Keep reacting to more Video Game OSTs. I absolutely love it
I would love to see you react to the Ghost of Tsushima soundtrack. It’s one of my favorite game scores along with God of War.
Hovering both games on the ps menu, both of them sound so similar yet so different
Bear mcreary is going to go down in history as one of the greatest composers of our time, right there with Hans Zimmerman and John Williams
I hope bear continues to work with santa monica for future GOW titles. he can easily be that franchise's John Willams or Ludwig Göransson
A son's path and Svartalfheim are the most iconic soundtrack to me, especially Svartalfheim, 3 phases was all beautiful...
Did you know that the Atreus theme is Kratos theme’s first 3 notes… REVERSED 🤯🤯🤯
Also his theme in the old gow games, if you imagine it slowly.
@@danielmorgan1126 it's pretty close, but it's not. Pretty good spot though. The similarity is undeniable
Yes, the baclwards-ness was intended, as a bit of a counter melody to Kratos' theme, just with a higher tempo and a little more wild, giving that contrast between the steely nature of Kratos and the energetic nature of Atreus. It is backwards to Kratos' base theme, but it is also shifted up a full step, going F E D, rather than Kratos' C D Eb theme.
7:10 i can just see mjolnir amd the leviathan axe clashing whenever I hear that part
I am so sad they didn't put "Bear McCreary - Raeb's Lament" which is Brok's funeral song. That song was so sad. Not many people have heard it because it is a side quest after you beat the main story.
This game was the absolute most perfect sequel to 2018, everything I wanted and more what a masterful experience nothing short of spectacular
I already miss it
Oh man I would've loved your reaction to the actual "Giantess of Ironwood". The part you listened to is actually the main theme. For some reason this soundtrack video has the first three tracks ("Giantess of Ironwood" included) are stitched together and labeled as "Giantess of Ironwood".
Last week, I drove from Southern USA to northeastern USA where it was super snowing during the night. Some of this soundtrack was monumentous to listen to during the dark snow fall, while driving fast on the highway. I felt like I was sledding with the dogs.
I always tear up when listening to the soundtrack of both 2018 and ragnarok
In my opinion the soundtrack for this game was the BEST soundtrack i have ever heard in a game
You should make one video just for Svartalfheim song. Really. Few seconds is disrespectful for such masterpeiece
Wow haha. I never listened to the soundtracks of GOW 1 or played it. Its my first time i listened to the soundstracks and these are awesome!! More then this. These compositions inspired me a lot.
I am excited for your next video on how to compose like this. :D
Gow 2018 gow 1 was in 2005
Bro could probably tell me the major plot twists of the game by just listening to the soundtrack
great overview of the soundtrack, i enjoyed your explanation of the theory behind the tracks, if you ever revisit this OST for a video, please give a listen to "Raeb´s Lament". it´s perhaps the most pivotal track in the game and would like to have your thoughts on it
Yes omg please it’s my favorite song in the soundtrack
This soundrak is even better in the game when you are in the final act right before Kratos uses the Horn 📯. It was so epic.
I actually kept getting chills and goosebumps multiple times, that arrangement was mind blowing for me
Ilan Eshkeri did a masterful job on Ghost of Tsushima’s score, need a reaction video
6:15 is when Kratos blows the horn before going into Asgard. 6:28 I right after he blows the horn.
I gotta say my favorite of the soundtrack has to actually be Svartalfheim, particularly the second half. And the last minute and a half when the female vocalist kicks in the track feels just so powerful and full of pride it's glorious.
25:22 always leaves me speechless
The problem with GOTY was that Elden Ring used a new formula very well but GOW Ragnarok used the old formula to its very limits. So now its just contest between which gamew design formula people like more the new one or the old one
PLEASE react to Blood upon the Snow (from GoW Ragnarok)
Thank me later
6:30 Imagine hearing this dope ass shit live in theater.
Fun fact the conductor for this game is also a character in the game as well
Gotta do Raebs lament, truly gut wrenching stuff.
The All-Father track is one of the greatest soundtracks in the history of soundtracks.
The music in this game constantly gave me goosebumps, more so than any other game I’ve ever played. What a game, no, what a piece of art! Truly special.
Hands down best game I've played on so many levels, the last song when the game ends and during the wake were just mind blowing.
This is the best video game I’ve EVER played. It is a masterpiece 🥺😩 and the music is SO GOOD
he skipped over Ræbs Lament :( its the best one imo rivalling echos of an old life
What you did was very impressive. Reading the notes by listening and playing it on the fly. Truly cool. 👏🏽
Ragnarok is my fav masterpiece the song is amazing
Music in this game was on point. Such a good weaving of leitmotifs throughout the story. Reminded me of some of my favorite film and tv show scores.
😕I wanted see what you thought of Raeb’s Lament. One of the best in the game. Well it’s alright I guess. Great video anyway. Keep it up.❤
Loved the HTTYD soundtrack, and I loved the God of War soundtrack, I see a pattern here
bear said it himself
Kratos is a god of few words
bear took that and made it to an amazing piece that becomes an inseparable part of the game
a true musical genius at work
If you haven’t already you gotta give blood upon the snow a listen it’s so fire my phone can never handle it
I cried during the credits, i rarely sit through them but this time i was too busy wiping my tears
Every single track in this sound track gives me goosebumps this game was an absolute masterpiece and I'm sure we will get master pieces in the future
The Giantess of Ironwood you heard is the wrong one, the one you heard is Kratos’s theme from ragnarok, not different. The Giantess of ironwood is different you will love it.
Jack Okami actually screwed up on Giantess of Iromwood because he put God of War Ragnarök there again instead of the actual song
1:26 FOR BROK!!!!
Something to make a note of: you didn't actually listen to "Giantess of the Ironwood", it's a mistake by the person who uploaded the vid
It blows my mind that elden ring meat riders say the music in elden ring is better
both are amazing really
No need to shit on that game dude. Both soundtracks are perfect lol
13:30- when you hit the D and bring the Bb into it and describe it as some sort of endless rising, it could be that Schubert-esque invoking of a feeling of dreaming/imagination. He was quite fond of the I-bVI structure (albeit in a different way). Just throwing that out there is all.
You should react to blood upon the snow, from the end of this game.
Yes that one is so amazing
I love that Bear wanted my favorite vocalist ever, Eivor. He heard her on the Last Kingdom Soundtrack. Having Eivor is like having one of the best musical instruments in the world available and she can improvise like hell as well. There isn't anything vocally she can't do, from Beatbox to Opera.
God of War is more than just a game.
It's the cruel life of a spartan
Thank you for your very insightful videos on music! I have a BIG favour! Could you analyse the music of the video game Fable II and III? Thank you very much!
Got to hear some of this music performed live at the Hollywood Bowl, it literally gave me chills! Epic can’t even begin to describe this music. It’s transcendent.
I recommend that you react to the soundtrack of The Last Of Us 1 and 2
PD: I also recommend the soundtrack of the Netflix series: Arcane
hey man, this is my first time seeing your channel and I am already inlove with it XD would you mind also reacting to "Blood Upon The Snow" by Hozier and also by the man himself Bear McCreary :D
One tip: Rather than clicking each chapter from the list below, there is a shortcut key combo to that -> " Ctrl + left arrow ". And with that, you can be on full screen and skip through the chapters without scrolling down to see the list and do click chapters
Cool tip--definitely going to use this!!
I’m so salty it didn’t win GOTY. Absolutely deserved it.
Bear McCreary makes a lot of incredible music but that Ragnarok theme is just perfection. It contains so many different emotions and builds brilliantly
I was searching for these reactions on UA-cam. It was truly honorable and well justified from your point of view, you as being a composer yourself. Nice work. Love how you just pick up a note instantly on hearing a music. *claps*
I only just noticed that the last part of the finale piece is the exact melody you hear in the menu of the first game. Don't know if this was intentional but hearing the very first melody of the Norse Saga at the very end of the last game is just nostalgic and amazing to me. Amazing game with a soundtrack to match. Loved to see you listen through some of it, great video 👌
If you like this soundtrack please check out the God of war 2018 soundtrack you will not regret it these two together or two of my favorite soundtracks in all of video games
Wow there really isn’t any composer who has reacted to ghost of Tsushima
I played the game, and if memory serves me right the “sons path” song is actually the combat music
Edit: There is a character in the game named Raeb (yes Bear backwards) who’s a musician and he’s voiced by Bear McCreary
Sons path is what plays mostly to depict Atreus in the game. It’s officially confirmed too.
@@The_All_Fatter sounds right to me lol
