Dromaeosaurus (Latin: Dromaeosaurus) is a genus of small theropods that lived in the middle to late Campanian Stage of the Cretaceous Period, approximately between 76.5 and 74.8 million years ago, in Alberta and the western United States. The type species is Dromaeosaurus albertensis, which was described by William Diller Matthew and Barnum Brown in 1922. Dromaeosaurus was a small predator - about 2 m (6.6 ft) long and 15 kg in weight. It had many sharp teeth, as well as large sickle-shaped claws on each leg. The body was most likely covered with feathers. The type species is Dromaeosaurus albertensis, which was described by William Diller Matthew and Barnum Brown in 1922. However, some fragmentary remains, such as teeth, that may belong to this genus have been found in the Late Maastrichtian Hell Creek and Lance formations dating to 66 million years ago. Teeth have also been found in the Aguja Formation.
The long sickle-shaped claws could pierce the skin of a young Edmontosaurus, and the teeth are adapted to inflict serious wounds. Dromaeosaurus differs from most of its relatives in having a shorter and more massive skull, a deep lower jaw, and larger teeth, of which there were only nine on each jaw. Because of this, it is assumed that its jaws were used for crushing and tearing, rather than just cutting through flesh.
Dromaeosaurus also had a vein at the back of its head called the vena capitis dorsalis, which ran through the anterior muscles of the neck as well as two long canals running to the back of the brain.
