- We thought everything was going as planned until an unexpected breakdown on our excavator sent us racing for a replacement piece of equipment from @TheHomeDepotRental. Luckily, the rental process was quick and easy and we were back on the job in no time. We swapped out our broken Bobcat Mini excavator for a New Kubota! Man that was tough to give back after mine was fixed. #sponsored

Mini ex: I owned Kubota and now own a Gehl, I’ve run Bobcat as well. The Kubota was pretty hardy and took the abuse. Of the three my Gehl cycles the fastest but doesn’t have the bells and whistles of the E35 I ran. New is always fun but it boils down to dealers, parts and budget.
I got 2019 Kubota kx40 mini ex was purchased last April it has now 270 hours it’s very powerful and fast and I have no problem with it so far good machine
yeah kubotas are best and reliable and cheaper then other brand plus kubotas has wide verilty options payment options wich no other brand has
I just got the same machine in September! With over 140 hours on it now I can say it is like the Cadillac of equipment
By far the KX40 is the best for the price. Never had any problems ive gor 260hrs on mine run like a dream
yeah kubotas are pretty solid beast and prices are desent plus kubota prices arnt rediculas like deeres and cat and newhollands are
I think it’s test and comparison time! We would all love to see that! Side by side comparison, all brands same size which is best!
Honestly Stanley I have ran about every brand of mini out there JD,cat, bobcat, case,Kubota and Takeuchi. They all have perks and downfalls bobcats have the fastest cycling speed but lack power compared to like a Takeuchi what I think the huge factor is in equipment is what dealer is closest and who will take care of you. Nothing like having a break down you can’t fix and the dealer is 2 hours away and they say drive it to there shop because that’s to much wasted time.. most excavators have a yanmar motor...
Nice commercial brought to you by The Home Depot
Saved their ass. Also very handy to have for smaller 1-2 day jobs. My local one does not have any of these for rent though.
I would have to agree with Harvey, for sure Yanmar, they introduced the first mini in the marketplace and as far as power it can not be beat!!
Plus you never see many of them for sale used. Once purchased they are keepers.
Yeah if you give them their desired maintenance they will run forever.
Yanmars are a lot more slow is the only downside
One of my favorite options on the kubotas is the directional blade being able to windrow to the side is great and helps speed things up and only have one machine on site
I own two kubota mini excavators amongst my fleet. One has 2600 hours on it, still starts up quick and performance is like day 1. Just picked up a new kx 040-4 brand new, just put its first 100 hours on it. These machines sell them selves and will continue to do so! Quality that lasts. Kubota for life!
NOTHING beats a Kubota mini ex! Had one for years!
Stan Takeuchi is a beautiful machine. I have a few and work them to 8k hours without any major issues. Stan whats with the tiny digging bucket.?? So slow doing any with that buvket
I just had bought a Kubota skid and mini.. I've operated nearly every make and model of excavators and I could go pros and cons on everyone of them. With experience, pricing, quality and power It didn't take me long to decide what I wanted to start out with. I really don't have a specific brand I absolutely love as they all have their own uniqueness. 20 yrs experience and I gotta say kubota is a smart choice.
Steven Bagley kubotas are nice and new holland makes a pretty nice mini excavator too.
Yanmar mini will outdig the rest of them.
I had a 15-2 and currently own a 35-6. I have run JD and Kubota and Terex, and Takihuchi. Not really knocking the rest but
I'll stick with my Yanmar.
I just bought a yanmar vi017. Its the best mini I have ever operated in that size. Plus Yanmar owns ASV now so I figure he already has a relationship with the dealer.
oldredcoonhound yanmar for sure being tier 4 certified and working for a dealer I have never had to repair a newer one in the past four years of working there
oldredcoonhound our landscaper has a small yanmar backhoe, it never gives him any grief, and he uses it for everything from demolishing building, digging foundations and trenches to doing final grade work
I am a used heavy equipment dealer and also rent equipment and I will agree that Yanmar, in my opinion, makes probably the best and most reliable mini excavator out there, and has for years now. I sell over 100 minis a year of all brands (cat, volvo, kubota, tak, etc.. Several other brands make good machines, such as the kubota, but as far as smoothness of operating and longevity, I have not found another brand that compares to yanmar.
I've got 14 machines sitting on my lot right now of several makes, including 2 yanmars, and if I were to choose one to go run for the day it would be one of those two. A person could easily get 5-6000+ hours no problems out of them. I traded for and sold one last year that had over 5400 hours on it that ran and operated like a new machine, it was almost unbelievable.
I just bought a Yanmar 35. During my research, I never found anyone that complained aboutt their Yanmar - new or old.
When it comes too small machines you can’t go wrong with a kubota you should invest in one👍👍👍I’ve bought my third kubota excavator the first one is six years old and worked very hard braking and removing cement in extreme conditions and haven’t had any problems or repairs except replacing the rubber tracks from being worn out.👍👍👍👍👍
I personally don't work heavy equipment but I work with multiple company's that do, and most of the landscapers use Kubota. And have loved them. Best of lucky finding a new mini. Love the videos 😄 thanks for sharing
In the market for a new mini, went to the local Kubota dealer and was super impressed with the KX-040. Has a 6-way front blade option that would be ideal for cutting in swales like on that project. Also, Kubota really goes out of their way to sell the machine, 0% financing for 60 months, 1% for 72 even with 0 down. The auto bleed feature is cool too, if you run out of fuel you don’t have to worry about bleeding the lines. And the insurance package they offer is second to none. Check them out!
Talk about the trailer scooting forward! Tractor-trailer dump backs into a salt bin, lifts the bed all the way up. Load shifts and the whole truck scoots forward with the front of the bed pinned against the wall above the garage door. Truck can't move with load behind it and front of dump body is against the wall. No room to get machine in to move load. 12 very pissed off road crew guys with shovels moved the load by hand to get the truck out. Rumor has it that the driver bought dinner at the Lone Star. lol.
I own a 2017 Kubota KX71-3 have had it since brand new and its at 2100 hrs... do everything from Home foundations to brush clearing... awesome machine so far haven’t had any major issues with it and it gets used daily 👍🏻👍🏻
I have a Kubota KX151 the model before the KX161 series, steel tracks with cab 12,000 lbs, 4 buckets, root tooth, blade, hyd thumb; now with around 2300 hours; right not that many hours on it, Have never had a problem with it and its now what 28 years old, its a 1992. Best machine I ever purchased. Rest is Cat equipment, dozer, wheel loader, big excavator etc. I'm in dirt excavation site work. Would highly recommend a Kubota Mini Excavator, with hyd thumb.
2019 Bobcat e42 has a ton of power and bobcat just has great services and takes care of us.
Just ordered an e42. Cab, long arm with thumb, Hope to get some seat time around Thanksgiving.
I just finished a week with the smaller Kubota, like your Bobcat. I was very impressed with it. I have used Bobcat in the past, and like the design of the Kubota better. Very smooth, and good layout of the controls. I have never been a fan of the touchiness of Bobcat controls.
Thanks for the input Jacob!
I run a Kubota KX-040-4. Perfect machine for what you do. With the cab option, you work all year long in comfort. Well worth it. Also, the thumb, and 6N1 front blade are great. It's the perfect size. Next one up is a bit too big and one below too small. I would take it over the competing brands any day. I'm not totally sold on Kubota across all platforms as I like my Bobcat T770 for skidsteers and Case 590SM backhoe for bigger jobs.
I ran almost that identical mini ex and never had any mechanical issues with it in the 4 years I was on it. Only issue we had was the tracks would pop off from time to time but that was because my boss spent all his profits on beer so we were running tracks that should have been replaced several years earlier. I loved running it though, everything was smooth and it had plenty of power. The best way to find out what's good is go to a rental place and ask. They need to have their equipment running to be able to rent it out and most customers beat the crap out of rental machines so they can tell you what holds up and what doesn't
I've rented a couple of different Kubota's and had good luck with them. I would look for one with the six-way blade on the front, it is fantastic for grading.
I highly recommend Kubota. They are reliable and sturdy. Most people argue their service and dealer systems are not the best. But they aren’t that complicated.
Hi Stanley, great video. I have a Cat 304, great machine. Which ever you chose, keep your old machine. That way you have a backup it you need it again. Regardless of which machine, they all will cause an issue sooner or later. Just the nature of the beast.
I am a used heavy equipment dealer and also rent equipment and I will agree with some of the other comments that Yanmar, in my opinion, makes probably the best and most reliable mini excavator out there, and has for years now.
I regularly see them with well over 4000 hours still running strong. I traded for and sold one last year that had over 5400 hours on it that ran and operated like a new machine, it was almost unbelievable. It had spent its life on a construction site getting beat up and looked terrible, but ran smooth as butter.
On a side note... 3/4 of the other brands run yanmar engines. So that should be some indication of reliability.
Andrew Camarata loves Yanmars, that's all the approval I need
Really like your videos on the jobsites
I have Takeuchi Tb 216 and 235.2. Both work awesome local dealership great service in Sacramento Ca. I like Kubota kx040 had one years ago great tool.
Thanks for viewing Jeff!
A Kubota KX040-4 with a six way blade and dual remotes is pretty tough to beat. Try one out.
I've been really pleased with my takeuchi mini excavator. Never had a problem with it, other that a sticky starter after I buried it in 2 feet of water doing a pool demolition job. After a few pecks with a hammer and 10 hours run time to dry it out it's been fine since. 2600 hrs. and counting.
Great video👍👍
Thank you !
Just got the new cat 307.5. Very nice machine and fits anywhere
Kubota is a great mini x had mine for 14 years still running
I work for a excavation comp. For 18 years now best mini excavator we we have is the takeuchi tb138fr you should try it one vidieo with thumb
Been running Kubota compact excavators for over 15 years. Run Bobcats for everything else. When it comes to price and performance/specs for what we need its Kubota for our main excavator. Just a powerful workhorse.
I am a landscaper from Germany and we run on Wacker Neuson excavators and they are beautiful to work with.
Been running a Kubota KX018 for a year without a single breakdown. Great machines
Love the kubota and bobcat excavators, would not buy a new one but a good used one yes.
We run Kubota zero turns and front mowers they are great machines as for the mini ex we run a new Holland it is also a great piece of equipment
i like the kubota f3990 im looking at wich is a 39.6hp wich huge hp front mower
We use a Case cx57 excavator but theres a smaller version of it but still has the same amount of hours powers which is the Case cx60 mini excavator and it has a cab for the cold or just rainy days, we also use the cx57 to grub trees with so it gets the job done, we’ve had it for over a year now and we’ve only had one breakdown but that was only because has put bad fuel in it, compared to our last one which broke down 5 times the first year we had it
Thanks for the comments !
Looks like that job could have also been accomplished with my Kubota L series tractor and 3pt. box scraper. Love it for grading tasks. I've got a little kubota tlb plus my L series and I can say they make a good piece of equipment in general. Have heard good things about skids and mini-ex's but have no experience with kubota on that end.
All Phase Lawn & Landscape would agree with your comment plus believe it’s quicker and cleaner. :-)
Kubota minis are great. I got a 10k lb kubota and it's a beast!
If you ever have really sticky mud, sprinkle some sand in the bottom and the mud will slide right out.
Thanks Chuck
Kubota is great stuff. I've seen 8000 hours on the meter. Cat is always good on the long term. My old 84 takeuchi is on its third motor and digs strong. It makes that bobcat look like a tight machine, but it digs a hole.
For the last 20 year, I have been an operator in the earthworks industry. Been in every machine out there Komatsu is the up and coming star. I do like your videos.
Glad you like the vids, thank you !
Kubota & yanmar makes the best mini excavators and I've worked them all
Kubota is a pretty good brand I have no complaints about Kubota
You passed me on the side of the highway at 0:20 awesome!!
Komatsu and cat are the pinnacle of innovation and reliability, also you need an Avant loader for these jobs where your trying to protect the ground, I love mine
Millars Excavation caterpillar is over priced
Clemons I don’t believe so the service, quality and innovation is worth the money, long term. But hey your entitled to your opinion 😉
Millars Excavation I have one I know main drive hydraulic hose blew and it costed me $2,400
I have work for 2 different companies they each had 1 Kubota mini excavator. I did most of the maintenance on them. both were about the same had 6 way blades on them . They were good machines, both were brand new when purchased and now have about 2000 hrs. Very few if any problems. Most of the issues we have were from the operators not the machine. The parts seemed to be a little pricey but they are not that bad. As long as you have a good dealer you should have good luck. I have a also been around older komatsu mini's they run for ever.
Yamar, Kubota are great machines. The Tamar has more break out power
I'm sorry I spell it wrong, Yanmar
If you are talking about YANMAR machines (I can't be sure due to your spelling ) You are absolutely WRONG ! A Kubota U55 has a bucket breakout force of 11,177 pounds and a Yanmar 55 has a bucket breakout force of ONLY 7,464 Do your homework!
I've ran a kubota kx91-3 and it was a very nice and fast machine. I only down fall I had with it was the controls were Jerky with fine movement. I've also ran a Takeuchi Tb 153. It's a very smooth machine.
Yanmar and Takeuchi mini excavators are about the best and most reliable machines that you're going to find.
Thanks for the comments Clyde !
I use cat daily and we've liked them better then kubota
No experience with a mini-ex, but I have a kubota b2601 and love it
I had an older Caterpillar 303.5 that was an awesome machine but parts are extremely expensive. Sold it and purchased a kubota kx033-4 I love it so far, only downside is it's a cab machine and I'm a bigger guy so getting in and out is a slight aggravation, but the non cab and larger machines have a little wider doorway.
I have a takeuchi tb216 mini. Before I purchased, I tested kubota, bobcat, jcb and cat. Takeuchi runs circles around them. The only downside is that they dont come in a cab configuration. Canopy only.
I've ran both Yanmar and Hitachi mini excavators and the Yanmar was my favorite to run and also performed much better
Go Kubota. I have a KX 57-4. Love it. 4000 hours and no issues. You need to get a ditching bucket for that kind of work. I have 4 foot tilt one for mine. Also a plate compactor and a rock hammer.
Those dump trailers are easy to over load and nothing worse than going to dump and not being able to lift your load. Always center load and be careful not to load too much weight forward (common sense I know). Also good tip is to keep A jump box with you in case battery 🔋 dies on the dump trailer you’ll still be able to dump. Nice work with that kubota, I’ve rented them and loved them
Kubota mini excavator is the only way to go Stan! I work for a kubota dealership I have ran seen and worked on them all kubota makes one the most user friendly machines on the market and they run forever! There are other good brands as well yanmar and others but kubota is in the tippy top tier in my book
I own 2 kubota (kx161 and svl75) machines. A Cat 308cr or Yanmar sv100 will be our next machine. Both brands come with pin grabbers from our local dealer. We have a yanmar Vio25(5300lb's) with a pin grabber. It is a fantastic machine! Amazing power for its class and the pin grabber is a game changer for functionality of the machine. I reverse the bucket alot dig into a pile.
Kubota is really good, yanmar is good, takeuchi is good, looked at takeuchi but tak has kinda a whacky parts supply setup, I dont wanna get parts and filters on ebay. But tak is good also. Go with Kubota! Even a lot of the other manufacturers use their engines!
I have a Yanmar Vio 55B and overall it's a great machine, best part about it is the zero swing. Never have to worry about the counterweight taking out a fence or side of the house etc. Also Yanmar has a high resale value compared to other brands out there.
Glad you like it, thanks for sharing !
Started off as a Bobcat fan before I knew any better. Few years experience now it’s Yanmar from now on.
I rented a KX71-3 for a week to fix my mud hole driveway and level a couple pads. Nice machine.
I don't really see the point of the tip out tailgates on dump trailers, I bought mine in 2008 thinking this was a great feature until I dumped a few times with it and realized just ends up being a hinderance to the load coming out so I always just swing my doors open. Dump trailers are just too low to the ground compaired to dump trucks for that type of tailgate to be practical, especially with the box hinge point being as far forward as this one in the video is.
The Big Tex 14LX my company has, sits higher and I have had no problems with the swing gate.
have run cat, bobcat, and kubota, by far enjoyed the Kubota most, also found the serves at the dealer ship amazing, and would recommend kubota to anyone
I’ve owned and ran a deere 35G for 3 years/2200hrs. I’ve run Cats, Kubota, yanmar, Takeuchi, komatsu, and bobcats of similar size, as well as bigger and smaller sizes. I run mine with a long stick, added counterweight, and no thumb (for now) With my machine, I have done everything from off-loading 36” box trees (up to 1000lbs) from a semi, trenched for mains/drains, cut grade, removed shrubs, pretty much everything you could think of. The Deere is hands down the best machine from a lifting capacity, breakout force aspect. The Kubota was in my opinion the fastest most responsive machine that I used. Cat had the best aux hydraulics. I would recommend the Deere
Be honest know cats and they are knowed for there power in the heavy equipment and when they put engines in the semis I don't know what is equivalent to a deere 35g to cat but you could be right, but that does change they are competitors, it's like ford vs dodge 2019 ram was the only truck that had over 1000 ft pounds of torque then 2020 ford has the most torque
I have just brought a 3 ton kobelco and love it. Definitely yanmar and kubota are good machines but kobelco is the best value for money
Kubota and Yanmar are used mostly here in east texas. Takaeuchi is begining to dominate the jobsite. Bob cat and Cat has been around for a long while. These other three manufacturers are rising in popularity. 🤔👍
The best piece of equipment to buy is the one who has good dealer support. They are all about the same when it comes to mini's. I have a Doosan because of great service.
We have a 2012 161-3 Kubota and its been a great machine but Yanmar has a 5 year warranty on new minis and they are fast smooth little machines. I've ran trackhoes for 20 years and those are the 2 minis I would choose from and would probably go with yanmar because of the warranty.
Love komatsu and kobota
Dump barn door almost every time.
Excavator needs to be the most dependable with available parts.
I've heard some issues with parts with Kubota but not always.
I don't know this personally, heard it from a friend that rented an old one.
May be different now.
While your trailer is new. Put some hardwood or plywood UNDER the steel bed sections . This will keep it from getting bent down when you drop dirt and rocks in the bad.
When life gives you lemons, Go rent a lemonade make!
Yarmar and Kubota making good machine s
Huge fan of Kubota and Takeuchi japan seems to make awesome adorable Equiptment
The landscape company I work for just recently got a used Kubota, but it's considered a mid size and not a mini. It's a enclosed cab , thumb and 2 buckets( 1 for digging with rock teeth and the other for trentching) and a 6way blade. It's something that was well needed and to give a spare for the loader with backhoe on a tractor that we use as well.
Kubota makes a really nice mini. I’ve also heard good things about Yanmar and some of the Takeuchi’s. A thumb is a must though! Great video, keep it up!
Nice job thanks !!
Thank you Mark!
I have a Kubota u25 solid machine, lots of power, no mechanical issues. 2013 model
I saw at the end you had two professionals standing around, did you give them a chance to show you how it is done?
We had a Kubota KX-080 with a thumb. it was very nice and dependable but if the fuel filter got a little dirty it needed to be changed quickly.
Kubota all the way on my 3rd over last 15 years they are awesome equipment and a pleasure to deal with
We own a kubota u15 mainly for digging footings and drains but sometimes grading. It runs perfect and the size is just small enough to get into backyards but big enough to have enough power to do the job.
Takeuchiii, mini excavators are sweeett
Takeuchi or yanmar. Don’t settle for less ive run them all. Those 2 brands are by far the best from every big company and small contractor I’ve talked to.
Kubota KX 040-3. The only mini ex with a 6 way blade. Wake up all you other manufacturers!
ABSOLUTELY correct !!! I've got one and it is by far the best option you can get on a mini ! (especially for a job like this one) I wish I could have gotten one on my 080 too, but they only offer an angle blade on that machine.
My local HD doesn't rent, but there are 2 in the area that do. They even carried more equipment than was listed on the website. Came in handy for a project I did this fall. Rented a small TLB and it was a bit rough (seat wouldn't swivel), but worked better for my 1-day project than renting from a traditional rental yard.
Kubota last and run very well.. I had over 4k hours on the first svl 75 and it still ran strong when I traded it for my new one. Also had 3 minis 1 kx61 and 2 kx91 and currently have a KX057-4
Get a Cat Mini. Great add on attachments and a very very vast size range and they are highly customizable
Kubota minis are nice. I prefer JD or Cat. But we do have 2 KB minis at the shop that retract the tracks from 5'-3' which are pretty nice.
I've heard a lot of good about Takehutchi and Kubota .
I have a 3 ton volvo excavator a kubota and a case and the volvo would out dig them anyday but it is hard to get used to grading with one have had it for a year and a half and only replaced a hydraulic cylinder hose and serviced it over all I think volvo excavators are a great machine i think there is no same size digger to compete with it
The Kaboto was top notch because it was new, anything new is going top notch. Kabota makes a very good mini, but demo a brand new Bobcat and I think you'll be very surprised with there new machines, we work the death out of our Bobcats and they hold up incredibly!!
I personally run a Bobcat E35 and I must say it’s a pretty stout machine. Haven’t ran anything else so I can’t really talk for other brands but I enjoy my Bobcat. I’d recommend Atleast a E35 or above, E32 & below seems a bit too small.
We ran Kubota kx71 with steel tracks and extenda-hoe and a tach 35 The kx71 is not made any more but Kubota was handy. List of features I'd get:cab with heat and air, hydraulic angle blade, quick detachable bucket, and adjustable bucket tilt. Zero swing is nice but not really needed, thumb can be a life saver but tilting bucket is a dream for grading. Hard to get both with limited hydraulic systems on mini's. Real question is size? Me I like 9000 to 12000 lbs machines.
I have a L35 backhoe thats 23 years old, only thing I have had to do to it is fix a few hoses, cylinder seals, tires, and a few batteries. I also have a KX 57 and a SVL 75. Zero problems out of all of them.
