Yes, you totally can, and actually you should. Doing so reduces wear on your transmission and improves your MPG. If you just need to come to a stop for a stop sign or whatever, there is no reason to downshift through all the gears. Just push the clutch in, use the brake to come to a stop, then once you need to start again put it back in first. Hope that helps!
I wouldn't say it's a bad idea. I love mine. It's probably not your mom's idea of a good first car for a number of valid reasons though lol. I wanted one for my first car too but that didn't happen. Lmk if you have any more specific questions/concerns.
Hey you guys, so I just bought a 94 f150 xl 5.0 4x4. It's my first manual lol I'm not doing bad at it, stalled once coming out of my driveway that's on an good incline. My question is is there a certain speed for a certain gear to look for to kind of help as I progressed?
Congrats on the purchase! As far as a certain speed for each gear, you pretty much have to figure that out yourself. It is different for every vehicle. Watch your tachometer (or listen if you don't have one) because the RPM's are the most important indicator of when to shift. It also depends on if you are traveling up hill or down hill. You'll get it.
No, not really. I have 3.55 gears though so that doesn't help. When I had stock-size tires, I was getting about 11 mpg around town and about 13 mpg on the highway.
Silly question I purchased my 1992 f150 4.9l and it has a d where the 5 should go.should I shift into that or leave it highest at 4. It has 1234d and then r for reverse.
No worries. It can be confusing. The D is inside of a white circle which is an O. It stands for Over Drive. It's just to let you know that when you shift into 5th you are using an overdrive gear, which you wouldn't want to do if you were towing, hauling a heavy load, climbing a steep incline, etc. Any situation where you need a lot of torque. Back in the day it was common for trucks to not have an overdrive gear. For example, my 1975 has a 3-speed with no overdrive, so 3rd is the 1 to 1. In my 1995 and your truck, 4th is the 1 to 1. So yes, you should use OD (5th) when it's appropriate to do so. It will allow you to cruise at highway speeds with lower RPMs. This will improve your MPG significantly and its better for your engine. I hope that helps!
Hey does your truck sound like it has a whining noise when you mash the pedal. Mine not to loud but I can hear it sounds like the transmission. Didn’t know if it’s normal for them to howl a little.
Yes, my truck also does make somewhat of a whining noise when I get on the gas, especially at higher speeds. Transmission would sound like grinding so it’s probably not that. I’m not a mechanic though…

@@BruceHarris-r7r I had a similar issue with mine that stumped me as well. Sometimes it would just randomly die while driving, sometimes it would crank really long and slow when starting, sometimes it would start fine, sometimes it wouldn’t start at all. One night it died randomly while I was driving it and I couldn’t get it to start back up. Ended up leaving it over night and when I came back the next morning it started up just fine. I ended up just taking it to the ford dealer to have them figure it out, which they did. It was some random electrical shit in the distributor cap. Maybe check that out. Hope that helps
With stock-sized tires I was getting about 12-14 mpg. With 32x11.5r15 MT tires I’m getting about 10 - 12. These trucks are getting old so you’re going to probably run into issues but don’t let that discourage you. They’re great trucks if you stay on top of the maintenance. @@mckayeast1077 Yeah I was pretty lucky to find an XL that did have a tach. I’ve driven trucks without them and you can definitely shift by ear but I still like to have one personally. Aftermarket ones aren’t that expensive and are pretty easy to install though
It's a half-ton so I don't know about a camper. Probably not. I drove it from Montana to New Mexico and back last summer though. Like 3k miles round trip.
I towed about 6500 without trailer brakes in my 5.0 and I definitely wouldn't recommend towing often unless it's occasional. Gets the job done but maybe not the safest tow vehicle
It could be a lot of things. Does it crank over or do anything else when you turn the key? Obviously, it could be your battery but I'm sure you checked that. Mine was having issues starting a while back. The issue ended up being that the starter wasn't grounded properly. If you have double tanks, try starting on both of them. I'm not a mechanic but I hope that helps.
@@harley_benoit it does crank over and when I turn the key the key you can hear the fuel pump and the radio will turn on. If I’m lucky the truck turns on occasionally
@@alfredoramirez6041 Like I said, I'm not a mechanic but I sounds like you may be having the same issues I had. So as far as the starting issue, the problem was a bad ground. Mine would also die randomly. The issue there was a sketchy connection in the distributor cap. After my truck randomly died for a fourth time while driving, I had it towed into a Ford dealer and they were able to resolve both issues. Hopefully that can at least point you in the right direction to look.
Meanwhile when you have a 300 i6 + NP435: Wanna do 120k/h on the highway? At 1:1? That will cost you 3 grand a minute. Surprisingly tho even with it being pure carb it doesnt do too horribly on gas nor does that seem to be all that bad to run it that fast i guess as long as its not constant for hours but still. Doesnt slow down up hills despite gearing.
@@harley_benoit no crap but you’re shifting like you have a stroke in the middle of each gear, you don’t have to take that much time to where the motor revs down so much and it jumps when you put it into the next gear, just clutch in and put it in gear effortlessly and fast
@@natesharlette The regular Mazda M5R2 transmission with it's metal synchromesh rings shifts slowly. The modified version in the mid-90's Thunderbird Super Coupes had fiber synchromesh rings to aid in faster shifting. It's a truck, not a race car.
There is no reason to downshift through the gears when coming to a stop. Brakes work just fine. Owners manual actually recommends against it because it decreases mpg

Thanks. Yes. There is no reason to downshift when coming to a stop. It wastes gas. I’ll try to do a walk around soon.
I love you’re truck and I’m not hating on you in any way but when you are sitting at a red light I personally pay attention to the other lights at the intersection because typically when the cross traffic light turns yellow it means yours is going to become green soon so I tend to put my car into first gear and get ready for it so I’m not stuck trying to find first while the light is green
i'm hoping to buy an 81 f250 with a 5.8 in it in a couple days
Hi guys! I finally got my first car (a 1990 Ford f150 Lariat w manual transmission) any tips for changing gears and getting over a general fear of driving?
Congrats! Drive with someone who knows what they're doing and have them coach you. Find a large empty parking lot and practice there. Also find somewhere on an incline and practice hill starts. It will make you a lot more comfortable doing it when there is a car behind you. Good luck!
They don't make themike that no more!😝💪
I’m looking at a 1994 f150 xl 4.9 straight 6 4x4 5 speed reg cab short bed it’s decent shape and it’s 4000 obo can’t decide if I should buy it or not I want a 4wd truck I have a 93 f150 5.0 2wd I really like these model fords. So I’ll probably buy it. Let me know your thoughts.
It sounds like a cool truck. 4k is more than I paid for mine but it’s a long bed and I also had to put a lot into it. If it’s solid, it’s probably a pretty good deal. Good luck!
Blue is better than the red that they put on them interiors, but I’m so glad I have gray
I really liked the blue interior except that it was difficult to find parts for. I have since sold the truck and now have a 94 F150 with the gray interior
@@harley_benoit I have a burgundy 95 f150 4x4 302. I’ve replaced about everything on her. I grew up In this generation of F150 so I was a truck that I knew I would have to own one day
want to get me inline 6 1996 ford f150 with manual transmission but cant find one
You just have to be patient and keep looking
can you let me know what your camera set up is? where do you mount and how? beautiful drive BTW.
Thanks! Camera set up is pretty low tech. Just my iPhone taped to the back window
I have a question so when your slowing down whatever gear you come to a stop on you can shift all the way back to 1st
I’m thinking about one for my first car is that a good idea or not
I wouldn't say it's a bad idea. I love mine. It's probably not your mom's idea of a good first car for a number of valid reasons though lol. I wanted one for my first car too but that didn't happen. Lmk if you have any more specific questions/concerns.
Adoro esas f150 con 6cil motor 300 el mejor con transmisión manual sea de 4ta ó 5ta son un relax yo tengo una mi consentida
Thank you , I really appreciate it. Yeah I really whish I had a tachometer lol.
Looking into buying one of these are they good on gas?
No, not really. I have 3.55 gears though so that doesn't help. When I had stock-size tires, I was getting about 11 mpg around town and about 13 mpg on the highway.
@@harley_benoit I was planing on getting one of these as a little commuter for work since the offer popped up but you summed up my question thanks👍🏼
Oh yeah I have 2 fuel tanks which I love.
Yes me too. Very convenient when you get 12 mpg.
Did you happen to record this in Northern California? It looks a bit like Sacramento County.
@@tallo7545 No but you’re somewhat close. Santa Barbara County, California
It such a shame thay these became a collector's item not saying no one else can enjoy but they're all mostly gone
@@jesusramos-my2qr I understand what you’re saying but it also protects them and the aftermarket that keeps them on the road. They are still out there too, you just have to be patient and keep looking
I have the 1996 F150 XL 4.9 with the 5 speed manual. I bought it for $2,000. out if a back yard in Georgia. I've invested an additional $10,000. into replacing everything. I drive the truck for 20 - 30 minutes and when I try to start it....the voltage regulator just clicks, yes it's new too. After an hour the truck starts right up. I've replaced the battery, the starter, the coil, the ICM, I'm getting frustrated and about to sell this thing. It's a dam near mint truck..long bed, duel tanks, it's that nice dark green with grey interior and the black rubber floor. all that. Any ideas ??
@@BruceHarris-r7r I had a similar issue with mine that stumped me as well. Sometimes it would just randomly die while driving, sometimes it would crank really long and slow when starting, sometimes it would start fine, sometimes it wouldn’t start at all. One night it died randomly while I was driving it and I couldn’t get it to start back up. Ended up leaving it over night and when I came back the next morning it started up just fine. I ended up just taking it to the ford dealer to have them figure it out, which they did. It was some random electrical shit in the distributor cap. Maybe check that out. Hope that helps
just bought a 1988 f150 with a 4.9 inline 6 engine any tips for care and maintenance?
Not really. Just basic stuff. Changing fluids and filters can't hurt. Check the oil regularly.
How’s the gas mileage? I’m about to buy one for my first car. Any tips would be helpful.😊
Don’t buy one for mpg though lol. I spend so much on gas daily driving mine but oh well…
@@harley_benoit great thanks
My shifter feels loose now and i can actually twist it and its hard to align with the gears now. Know what it could be?
I have no idea. Sorry
What kinda camera are you using?
I just used my phone taped to the back window. iPhone 11 Pro Max
Where can I get the ac mod for thiss truck?
Not sure but maybe LMC Truck
My 1995 ford XLf150 doesn’t have a tachometer which sucks, but you really don’t need it.
@@mckayeast1077 Yeah I was pretty lucky to find an XL that did have a tach. I’ve driven trucks without them and you can definitely shift by ear but I still like to have one personally. Aftermarket ones aren’t that expensive and are pretty easy to install though
First things youll be replacing are shift forks shift stick bushings and starter
Why’s that?
They wear out..... From folks grinding gears, miss shifting, dumping clutch to fast etc etc etc.
Just looked at one of these. Considering buying it and driving to across country. Can this thing handle a camper that sits in the bed?
It's a half-ton so I don't know about a camper. Probably not. I drove it from Montana to New Mexico and back last summer though. Like 3k miles round trip.
I’d trade my e99 Powerstroke turbo diesel for one of those. Only manual transmission
nice
Looking to buy one of these trucks. How good are they for towing?
I think they're pretty good but I've never towed with mine
You can tow an atv around but I wouldn’t use an f150 of any year to tow anything heavier
I towed about 6500 without trailer brakes in my 5.0 and I definitely wouldn't recommend towing often unless it's occasional. Gets the job done but maybe not the safest tow vehicle
could anyone point me in the right direction ? I have a 95 f150 4.9l that won't start
@@alfredoramirez6041 Does the starter crank abnormally slow when it does decide to start?
@@harley_benoit I just came to work on my truck and it turned on but then it died it was running for a good minute or so possibly five minutes
Hopefully that can at least point you in the right direction to look.
what rpm does it sit at on highway doing 65-70 mph?
About 2k
That would depend on the gears ratio, check in the driver's door jamb for the axle code.
@@harley_benoitNice! Based on that, you probably have 3.55 gears as I cruise at 70-80 mph at 2k with my 3.08s.
@@bigtermtech5188 damn my car sits at like 3500 on the interstate and it drives me crazy
I own a 94 all Red in 90s maybe 97 tô 2000
Thanks for the ride pal! Sorry I couldn't kick you down any gas money, but my wallet is really thin right now....I mean anorexic. 🤓
Any of yall hear your gear grind when you don't fully put it into 1st gear
I mean if you drive when it isn’t fully in gear it is going to grind but why would you do that 😂
I wish I could find one that doesn’t have a shit interior or 200k+ miles :(
Why do you shift so slow
It's a truck, not a race car
@@harley_benoit no crap but you’re shifting like you have a stroke in the middle of each gear, you don’t have to take that much time to where the motor revs down so much and it jumps when you put it into the next gear, just clutch in and put it in gear effortlessly and fast
@@natesharlette Then show us how it's done make your own video

you dont use your gears for slowing down.... coming to stop, i never use brakes till just before sign... use your gears man, thats what their for....
There is no reason to downshift through the gears when coming to a stop. Brakes work just fine. Owners manual actually recommends against it because it decreases mpg
