All together the car and trailer weighs 5,300 lbs and surprisingly the truck still gets 10-12 mpg. They are also a good firewood hauler.
The issues I had were fixing and adding some grounds. Other than that I used Motorcraft parts for the secondary ignition, replaced a fuel pressure regulator and that's about it, so far. There's still a lot more I want to do with the truck but I need to buy a house first so I can do all the work in my own garage. The day will happen. Good luck.

How do you find towing is with these? I'm looking at a 90 300 manual and I wont be towing often but I will probably be buying a 1973-1977 ford f150 in the near future and was wondering if it would be able to handle that tow? I now it depends on the rear axle gearing to but im just curious if you've ever towed anything close to that weight.
ua-cam.com/video/HO7C01HvNSc/v-deo.html It does exceptionally well for towing, at least here in Michigan where we don't have mountains like the Rockies. This is the exact same truck towing a 2001 F150. I pull 6,000-8,000lbs with it several times a year, and it has no issue whatsoever. Just make sure you've got good brakes on the truck, and a trailer brake controller is a must. I actually prefer the I6 to a V8 just because of the torque curve and not having to rev it up to 4-6k rpms to make it up a hill or merge on the freeway. This is one of a couple towing videos I have on my channel. Hopefully it gives a decent idea of what I tow, and how effortlessly the truck does it. My truck is a 2wd 5 speed with the 3.08 gearing. 226,000 miles.
Long ago I had a 1980 F-100 regular cab, 300 6 cylinder motor with 4 speed manual. 4th was overdrive. It had about 140K on it when I got rid of it in 1987. The motor was great, not fast but plenty of torque. The rest of the truck fell apart. There was always at least 3 things to be fixed. Before I could fix the all the minor things, another major item would pop up.
I have a 1985 F-150 with the 6 cylinder and the same overdrive transmission. It doesn't really have any major problems but the transmission is slowly eating itself alive. Runs fantastic though. Acceleration is a bit sluggish with the 3.55 rear gear and 31 inch tires but it is overall a great truck. It even has a new Flowaster exhaust system on it.
I would love to get one of these for my first vehicle, but it's kinda hard to find a 4wd manual config. I'll probably just end up getting a ranger, but even then there hate to find
@J H L you should jump on that. They’re really good trucks and built solid af. Not like these new aluminum trucks. I ran into a tree the size of a typical log with mine while out in the trails and I knocked the e tree over lol no damage to my truck. A mini van backed into the back of my truck and I didn’t even have a scratch. The mini van however crumpled like a soda can. I’ve pulled two Silverado’s out of the mud with mine (4x4) and I pulled a porshe 311 out of the ground that had sunken in after sitting 20 years. I’ve also pretty much replaced everything on it. The body has 600k and the new motor prolly has 30k by now. I’m considering doing an auto transmission swap because I get tired of shifting in the city. But other than that I love this truck and I’d recommend it for sure.
thanks! Around town, I see anywhere from 12-15mpg depending on how hard I push it/what I'm hauling. On the highway, I generally see around 16-18 cruising between 75-80mph. I have seen 22mpg once when I took an old state highway for about 1 1/2 hrs going about 60, but I'm generally not patient enough to see those kinda numbers lol. The 3.08 gears really help with highway.
Wow I have a 94 5.0 extended cab 4x4 with 3.55 gears and on a good day with no wind I will get 10 mpg highway. I mostly drive the truck around town and have a car for highway trips so I always see about 8-10 mpg city especially in my town stop signs are everywhere
Do you know the exact name of the muffler? I have the straight 6 and I'd like it to sound similar. Also props on driving a 5 speed most people cannot drive half as well as they say they do but your driving is smooth.
jacob wahl if I remember correctly, it's just called a Napa Turbo muffler. I don't remember the part number or any specific name. But it was $50 at the local napa store, and they had it in stock. And thanks for the compliment :). I'm a CDL-A driver for John Deere, so I hope I can shift pretty well lol
Hell yeag , I owned one as my daily for a couple years and I loved it bro , it had a little use and just under 160,000 on it, but it ran like a dream. Miss it tbh, and be easy in grass and shit it does get stuck easy. Not no mud truck lol
Nice ride. Had one of those and miss it. You can replace some plastic gear box mechanism and tighten the shifting and replace the rubber plugs on the mazda box, which always leak and destroy the tranny. I bought it with 2.73 gears which were howling and dropped in 3.35 or something and it was so much better to drive and clutch. That engine with all new ignition components took a big timing advance without a problem.
Dan O'Connor i had the transmission fully rebuilt about 60,000miles ago, should be all set :). Thanks for the suggestion though! I do wish that I had been able to find a ZF S5-42 though, much lower first and reverse gear for easy towing. Oh well, the truck does fine as is
That tranny has a bad rap but the fail is usually caused by the plugs leaking and fluid disappearing without the owner even knowing. Check this www.ford-trucks.com/articles/m5od-mazda-design-manual-five-speed-transmission-preventative-measure/
Dan O'Connor mine failed because the truck sat for 4 years when my brother had it. A mouse built a nest in the bell housing, which caused the clutch to fry and tranny to overheat. Syncros all went, seals failed, the whole nine yards. It only had 110,000 on it when it failed. Since I rebuilt it, I drive it daily so no chance of another mouse nest lol. It does wonderfully for daily driving, and tows quite well, just wish it had a lower first/reverse gear
Also, I believe another common problem with this transmission is that it uses light-duty parts. I've heard of several cases of the output shaft gailing due to people being too rough on them
ive got the same truck jsut 4x4 literally had the cats removed today lol. mine sounds just like it i thought there was still a exhaust leak but i guess thats how they sound lol. love the stright 6 they are awsome as hell idc if it only makes 95 horse lol

If you ever have problems with your inner door handles snapping like i do the handles off the previous gen are steel with a chrome finish and will work
You can find the interior door handles at O'Reilly pretty cheap, they had both plastic and metal the last time I was there. They can be replaced with a 5/16" hex. head socket on an extension.
I wish I still had her.. I sadly sold her to my cousin when I moved to Europe 2 years ago. He uses it to haul his landscape trailers/tree debris/fire wood. Still going strong at 30 years old and 285xxx. Albeit a bit more beat up..
@@caasiwms I wish we had trucks like this one in Europe. Sure, you can import them, but they tend to be very expensive. A regular, well-kept "beater" truck that you can get cheaply in the US would be ridiculously expensive here. Plus, with the current prices of gasoline, all the gas-guzzling is a concern. Still, I'd love to drive a truck...
@@Havealocalife I know, I have lived in Europe for about 4 years, it was a very difficult thing to not be able to import the truck.. I have seen one or two OBS fords here, but they are really rare, and not practical.. Plus if it breaks down, there are almost no parts
Years later and yet again I'm watching this video, my 89 is parked with a bad slave cylinder and I ain't gonna fix it. Miss driving my 300 six. I can't see good enough or have the patience to repair it and the shop I talked to about it just ghosted me to the next customer so goodbye to the ferd.
The Mazda 5 speed is the factory option for the manual transmission for these model years. Mileage varied, but I would say around 13-14 city, and 19-22 highway if empty. Towing anything over 2,000lbs and it drops to around 11mpg both city and highway.
I know Ford and Mazda have mutual product tie-ins. I'm more familiar with the Mustang throw-out bearing being better than the RX7's, with it being a common upgrade. I wasn't aware of the Mazda 5spd. Thanks for looping me in!
Probably going to do this exhaust to mine, but maybe no muffler at all depending how it sound mine has the exact same engine trans and gears but shortbed single cab.
I'd recommend having some sort of muffler or at least the resonator in place of the muffler just for backpressure. As it is, mine does occasionally backfire when coasting/engine braking. Without a muffler, I'd imagine the backpressure would be even less, resulting in worse backfires.
Mine does good got an E40D with the same engine, a little slower than a manual probably but with 239k miles, mine shifts smooth yet firm. Having and O/D lockout switch is nice if you need to slow down going down a hill and has a great kickdown that jerks you back in the seat especially 1-2 WOT.
@@grundoid6796 Hey fella. What part of Ohio? I'm in Cincinnati. I have a 1990 V6i - 4speed manual with OD. I believe my truck just hit the 82,000 original miles mark. Roll up windows, love my truck.
You're gonna kill the clutch starting out in 1st gear all the time. 1st gear is for a heavy load. Those transmissions are set up to start out in 2nd gear for normal driving.
Not at all... Completely the opposite. If this truck had the ZF transmission with the granny gear, then what you are saying would somewhat apply, and it would be possible to start in 2nd gear with minimal wear (still less wear starting in 1st gear). But this truck has the Mazda 5speed (no granny) and 3.08 gearing, meaning that even starting in 1st gear is pretty tall, and it is downright foolish in terms of clutch wear to start in 2nd.. Even with semis, yes, you can start in a higher (4th-6th) gear depending on load and grade. But it is still ALWAYS easier on the clutch and transmission to start in 1st. The lower the gear, the lower the torsion forces on the transmission, and the lower the rub-time on the clutch. It's just how transmissions work
Hope that the trans is a ZF5 and not the Mazda 5. I have the Mazda, and it is only ok. I do tow with mine (7,000lbs maybe 5 times a year), and have towed very heavy before (12-15,000lb shingle trailer on one occasion), but its first and reverse gears are much taller, input shaft bearings are weaker, and sychronizers are more fragile than the ZF. Definitely make sure the synchros and seals are ok before buying it, or you'll be looking at a trans rebuild before long. Other than that, I'm not aware of any frequently occuring mechanical issues these trucks have. You literally cannot do better than the 300 i6, the best gasoline truck motor ever made.
What is your engine RPM while idling? My '96 with the 5spd likes 1100 ish.... Not sure if that's normal or what I could check out to bring those RPMs down.
Right after a cold start, it's about 1500rpm, but it falls down to around 800ish. Hard to tell, the tach is probably not exact. I don't think that 1100rpm is gonna hurt anything, but there might be a few causes. Easiest to check and fix would be the spacer on the throttle body, it should be a little screw where the throttle cable attaches that controls how far open the throttle is in a resting position. You could try giving that a few turns to lessen the gap. But the problem could also be more involved. You may have to at very least clean your throttle body from carbon/dirt build-up. Could also be a computer program, or could indicate another problem such as a plugged up catalytic converter that forces the engine to idle higher. I would say check the basic stuff first. Most likely, it's something with the throttle body.
Hey thanks for the help man! You're right, im sure it won't hurt anything. this is my project truck I pulled out of the woods about 4 months ago, i got it running, driving, and legal and now I'm going over it and fixing all the little stuff. I'll be sure and give your suggestions a try.
Good luck buddy, mine was a project truck too at first. Since i got it from my brother 4 years ago, I fixed it up and have put over 100,000miles on in with no problems. They are awesome trucks, just need a little tlc at first.
Andrew Ohanian I’m 5’10”, but with boots on, 6’ even. This is an extended cab, but my passengers have a decent amount of legroom. By no means as good as a new crew cab, but good enough. All it all, a comfortable truck. These front bench seats are better than any bucket seat I’ve ever sat in
Josh Veros it’s personal preference. If I’m being 100% honest, as reliable as these trucks are, and as much as I love them, you do have to take into account that they are 20+ years old. Parts get worn, and things can break/be hard to find to replace. While I personally do trust my truck to drive cross-country a couple times a year, I don’t know if I could recommend in good conscience someone to trade a truck that’s 10 years NEWER for one of these old beasts, even in mint condition. I’d say just buy it as a second truck, and use it how you feel. But maybe not swap. That being said, a 300 will have a better low-end torque curve for towing than a 5.3, so while it won’t be as fast of a truck, it will have better low-end grunt and better towing capability at 2500rpm and lower
how did u figure out what transmission u have. I got the 4.9 with 3.55. I did hear between certain years the Mazda transmission came standard tho don't know how much of that I believe to be true
C J you can tell my looking at the sticker on your door. If it's the Mazda, it will say M under Trans. Most (probably over 60%) of the manual transmissions were the Mazdas. There were only two manual options, Mazda (standard) and ZF s5-42 (optional). Easy way to tell the difference between the two is to look at the ribbing on the trans. If it's vertical and horizontal like plus signs, its the Mazda. If it's diagonal like the letter X, it's the ZF
Stock manifold/downpipe, delete cat and resonator, Napa Turbo muffler ($50) and exit through stock tailpipe behind the rear tire. Hands down the best sound possible to get out of a 300, don't mess around with flowmasters or cherrybombs, you'll spend too much money and it won't sound that good. Check out my exhaust videos. One just driving, one while towing another f150 on a trailer. GREAT sound.

midnightfox000 not bad. If I step into the throttle at any speed, I will hear it. But while cruising, road/wind noise is more noticeable than anything. Kinda the perfect balance
Cody Johnson haha it’s a store-bought center console that just sits freely on the seat. It isn’t attached in any way. I think I bought it at Walmart or something lol
Nope, I don't have any problems with it. I think it was like $8-12 at walmart in the auto department. Just a standard 2 cup holder/cd/coin separating center console. It's between that and the $4 folding cupholders I got from a boating store that are the best purchases I've made for the truck lol

All together the car and trailer weighs 5,300 lbs and surprisingly the truck still gets 10-12 mpg. They are also a good firewood hauler.
This makes me want to start my dads 95 manual strait six even more now
The issues I had were fixing and adding some grounds.

I now it depends on the rear axle gearing to but im just curious if you've ever towed anything close to that weight.
ua-cam.com/video/HO7C01HvNSc/v-deo.html
It does exceptionally well for towing, at least here in Michigan where we don't have mountains like the Rockies.
I gotta 95 with the 300 5 speed with only 100k and it drives amazing

@J H L you should jump on that. They’re really good trucks and built solid af. Not like these new aluminum trucks. I ran into a tree the size of a typical log with mine while out in the trails and I knocked the e tree over lol no damage to my truck. Good for you , you do not ride the clutch at the red light
Check this
www.ford-trucks.com/articles/m5od-mazda-design-manual-five-speed-transmission-preventative-measure/

Was it hard mounting the Mazda 5spd? What kinda mileage are you managing to get with the gearing?
The Mazda 5 speed is the factory option for the manual transmission for these model years. Mileage varied, but I would say around 13-14 city, and 19-22 highway if empty. Towing anything over 2,000lbs and it drops to around 11mpg both city and highway.

Rick Saffery what do you mean? The Mazda M5OD-R2 is the standard manual in these trucks.
Yes, M5OD / M5R2 is the standard manual 5-speed for the half-ton trucks.

Have a 96 single cab long bed with the 4.9L. 250,000 miles and not one problem with the truck.
how were these with an automatic? Any good? Being in the rust belt probably won't find any of these around.

It's just how transmissions work
@@caasiwmsIIRC my 89 300 truck has a 2.75 rear, same trans. I can tell yours moves off in 1st a lot more easily than mine!
I'm looking at 94 5 speed 4.9. Anything I should look at for specifically? Hoping to buy it this week

Weird question, but how tall are you? I'm 6'1 and wondering if I'd be comfortable in a reg cab. You look like you have plenty of room.

I'm 6,5 and perfectly comfortable in my reg cab f150
I was thinking of trading my 03 Silverado 5.3 4x4 for one of these in mint condition... Worth it?
You will have a terrible time finding one in "mint" condition, especially if you live in an area with rust. But they are great trucks!
Han Skinslo unless ur doing rust removal.
how did u figure out what transmission u have.
If it's diagonal like the letter X, it's the ZF
caasiwms I believe I have the m under trans. I always figured it stood for manual lol
then unfortunately, you have the Mazda M5-R2. At least it's better than the M5-R1 that was in the rangers

It doesn't slide around or anything? Ive been hunting for a solution for the lack of cup holders for months
Nope, I don't have any problems with it. I think it was like $8-12 at walmart in the auto department. Just a standard 2 cup holder/cd/coin separating center console. It's between that and the $4 folding cupholders I got from a boating store that are the best purchases I've made for the truck lol
I bought one from walmart and it has a place to put the center seat belt around it and strap it down. Makes it nice having cup holders lol.
Pretty rainy out eh
