My father worked for Onondaga County for 32 years. A Walters was the first plow he drove. 4WD all the time. No sander. V plow and double wings. He said it was a tough old machine. He ran that up through the 80’s. They then put him in a 6 wheel drive Mack. Double wings and two plows for the front. One V and one reversible. They would use the reversible plow most of the season until the banks were higher than the truck. They would then put the V on to buck back the banks. His last truck was in the late 90’s. That was a 10 wheel drive Autocar. He said that would put all the others to shame just due to the hp and weight. Had the same front blades as the Mack. I can still remember the truck numbers. Walters 35, Mack 68, Autocar was 192. I used to love riding around as a kid between my dad and the wingman. He has many stories about plowing roads with graders, with a 1 way or in these three trucks. Great stories.
My dad drove this 1971 Walters Snow Fighter for the Town of Kirkland Highway Department for 49 years. Friday January 8,2021 Jon Scott asked to park his truck out in front of the funeral home paying tribute to my dad, knowing how much this would mean to my family. I am sure this created some congestion and frustration in the village but man it sure meant the world to us. Countless 🎄Christmas mornings and other family gatherings were either missed or delayed while my dad worked tirelessly plowing snow. #bittersweet💔 #mydadsyoutubeisviral #morethan1millionviews #mydadstruckisbiggerthanyours #smalltownpride #resteasydad
Worked for Town of Root ,Montgomery Co in the the rarly 90's when the blizzard came through. All the regular dumptrucks took their turn getting stuck but an old timer named Bob and I truged on plowing and opening many roads with their 1980 orange walters.Seemed like you were on top of the world till the snow was as deep as the cab is high.
This looked like Hilltop road in Sprakers New York where we had a farm. You could hear the Walter with the detroit coming up the hill. They usually stopped by my house and backed down then would come back up really winging the snow back. One pass with both wings down and the road was done. That was in the 80's and early 90's. Loved to hear it coming.
Where I grew up in upstate NY the town still has a an old Walter as part of the fleet I remember the Valentine's blizzard where the only way to plow out half the town was with that Walter snowed in for five days getting groceries with the snowmobiles and the cold dark snowy night finnaly hearing the old disel and seeing the flashing lights was almost mystical. Nothing plowed that Walter could.
What was it about these incredible trucks that made them so capable? They weren't the heaviest trucks nor the most powerful. Blows my mind every time I see them in action. Could watch them work all day.
I worked for the Passaic Co NJ Road Dept in the late 70's. I was just out of H.S and landed a County Job on the road crew. We had 2 of these old Walters and they both worked. They had huge 4 cyl engines in them and top speed was maybe 35mph. All torgue and power. I had the good fortune to go out on a run with our Crew Supervisor "The Rebel" to open up a road that had huge snow drifts and the state couldn't get the job done. What a ride that was. We hit that drift at 30 mph and went through it like a knife though butter! What a truck and what a experience! I will never forget it! Damn I miss them days!
I grew up in Madison County in the 40s-early 50s and when those Walters with the V plow and 2 wings came thru, everyone got out of the way as nothing was going to stop them back in the day. People woud stand side of the rd cheering as they opened up the rd, especially after 5-6 days of being penned in.
It was the same in Binghamton, NY! I loved to watch the plow & hated it 'cause no snow day. The school bus drivers knew how to drive in the snow and the district superintendent trusted them to do their job, safely.
Growing up I remember the Town of DeWitt, NY used a Walter Snow fighter in the early to mid 70's. My friends and I always knew when it was coming up Woodchuckhill Rd. just by the sound of the diesel engine. This vid brought back alot of memories. The Snow Fighter is a great piece of snow moving eqiupment, I really enjoyed watching this!
50,s and 60,s in hull massachussetts had 2 of these. One diesel one gas. Gas was retired to beach cleanup..the diesel one carried on till the very end of the 70,s. It was the only functional plow in the middle of the blizzard of 78 storm. It never got stuck. All the other plows got stuck on sunset point trying to rescue each other. Its sole purpose during the blizzard was to keep the 6 hills of the town cleared in case of medical emergency. There was nothing else left capable of the job. After that it was retired
SERIOUSLY!! Are you kidding me, does any notice the guy sitting on the roof taking AWESONE FOOTAGE, is sitting up there holding on with ONE BARE HAND!!!!! WOW, that dude is seriously as tough as the freaking truck!!! Thanks guys that was wicked!! 😉😎
He knew how to run that Machine 😮😂back when we used to get weather like that😮unless it still happens like that there, Kool Video of ancient Machinery ❤
I had a ride with my friend, Ken, who operated a Walter with the V blade and twin "wings" on the roads in Hodgdon, Maine, just outside Houlton, Me. A local farmer, Glen Duff, had the contract to plow the roads there in the winter. It was almost unstoppable in the heavy snow and high drifts.
Takes me back to the mid '40s when I didn't get home from school for 5 days. Bus driver went door to door to ask the village people to take in about a dozen kids left on the bus.........Sharon Hill,NY------Jct of NY 145 an US Rt 20 ,about 1945 or 1947 . Thanks to Herb Vrooman, our bus driver of bus #9, a Mack, and Avery DeLuca, Principal. It took 3 weeks to get our town road plowed out, pop took the milk with horses and bob sled to Argusville to a waiting milk truck.
Town of Root,Montgomery County,NY had one similar in the '50s/60s with the wings on both sides. I believe it would clear a 24' path. You'd always feel rescued after a big snow when you heard the straight exhaust pipe bark .
When I worked for a time on a county road crew, we spent the late Summer and Fall stocking sand mixed with calcium chloride and putting up snow fence. The snow fence was installed in known windy areas tens of feet from the roads so the snow was 'dropped' before it built up on the roads. Common to see double stacked snow fence! The oldest Walters we used then was a 1937 with wings and V blade much like this one. It had straight cut trans gears and one had to double clutch to syncro shift smoothly!
Wonderful video. My grandfather used to work for the Cazenovia Highway Dept in upstate NY, (near Syracuse) and they had 3 Walter, one double winged. It was great to see them in action. With the combo sander/one ways they use now, seeing this video is a treat. They do have one or two V's still in the fleet which are called on when the going gets tough, however. Thanks for this great video.
What a handsome piece of machinery. When I look at this plow I think of a knight in shining armor coming to vanquish the snow. I wish we had something like this in Albany county for our four lane roads and for the hill towns.
If I remember correctly; Albany Co received some of, if not THE last Walters' to come off the assembly line before the the nearby factory closed. They've built some incredible 6x6's to replace them for plowing up on the West side, as have the Town's themselves. Good folks up there, most know to keep groceries on the shelf for when a storm is coming. They usually get an extra large serving of snow! There are still a few of these old beasts lurking in highway garages around our Capital Region area, along with Osh-Kosh's and a few FWD's. The latter are getting increasingly scarce. Repair parts are hard to come by, and very expensive when found used for these classics, which is an incentive to use them only for very extreme conditions. The famous Linn tractors were also made nearby in the Upstate Town of Morris. Most of NY is very different from the big city that people tend to judge us by. It's also nice for the driver's to have luxuries these trucks didn't offer - Re: heat in the cab, power steering, defrosters that work, quiet exhausts and the ability to drive over 35-40MPH on the way to the job. These folks sometimes live in their trucks 16 hour days and more during a storm, stopping only for fuel, reloading sand and a cup of bad coffee at the shop while we sleep warmly in our beds. Take time and thank them when you see them stopped at Stewart's, etc and treat them to blackwater and a bite. It's a tough job, and is always nice to feel appreciated. If you ever have an opportunity to take a ride in one, it's an eye opening experience for most, even on flat roads ... Some leave wondering how any mailboxes are left standing at all!
Walters, Oshkosh and the old FWDs with vee plow and double wing are hard to beat for breaking out a road through deep snow. You can come through with a snow blower later to tidy up.
cool truck i remember that storm it was ridiculous. had to snowblow our 400 foot driveway cuz the snow was too deep for us to plow with the 79 bronco. awesome to see a local vid i live in ilion
This is awesome. There is nothing like an old Walter. They are the best. I love seeing these beasts out in the snow. Steamshovelman and I own a 1970 FCBS which we are trying to get running and restore. Unfortunately, the Cummins 230 engine in it is very badly seized. I can't wait until it does run so I can take it out in the snow. However our wing was stolen and now we need a used Frink 14 foot right wing
Thanks for sharing this! Our county was Mackinac County in Michigans UP. In the 1960’s they used a big old plow we lovingly called the “Oshkosh”. It was a big V-plow that had a wing on the side to wing back the snowbanks when they got as tall as the top of the plow. We could hear that big diesel engine coming from 6 miles away. It was a beast.
Every time I watch something like this I am reminded of the old TV ad " Ever wonder how the man who drives the snow plow gets to the snow plow?" Guy gets our of his car and opens the town barn and camera goes back to the car. "This one drives a Volkswagen!"
My uncle had one just like this Walter he used for years and I never knew until I watched this video they would go that fast we used to just baby his and never plowed over 15 miles an hour with it ???? They were a great old rig but his didnt have a very good heater in it and I almost froze in it on really cold nites..........................
Nice vid. My grandpa is the highway superintendent for salisbury NY and the town has one just like this that the factory filled the bed with concrete for the weight and traction
We used to get snow like that in Milwaukee, but Ashland Wisconsin is still king of snow, on the Lake Superior Snow Belt, just off hiway 2. We just get slush in Milwaukee now. Garbage trucks plow the little we get (ugly) but now, sadly, it's mostly slush. Damn. I remember 10 foot drifts in Milwaukee alleys when I was a kid in the 60s & 70s. Sad to think it's all gone. The sun worshippers are thrilled. I hate summer. Guess being born in November put me in Winter mode. Love these old Walter's and FWD's, they still use them up in Ashland, if you drive north of Ashland, you're up to your waist in Lake Superior. Beautiful little town, along with Cornucopia, Bayfield, Washburn, and Hurley. God's Country! Way up inna nort woodz, by hey, yah Der!
I used one for about 5years, man it would move snow. Mine had a standard trans. Never had any problems with axles breaking. The one in this video is in much better shape.
great video. Wish I could find a smaller version for my 4 wheel drive tractor. I can't imagine the side thrust on those plows when coming through on the cleanup pass
still a blower on a payloader after words along with snow fences, keeps the roads open....the V blades work quick in a hurray... but still blow the banks back & claer the blind corners! a must!!!
now THAT'S A SNOW PLOW I want one I love doing this kind of work I use a 1973 Jeep grand wagoneer (( Much Modified I might Add )) as a snow plow in the rural hills of SW Iowa ,, I live on a road that the county ignores and I am the only guy of the 5 homes on my road who can get out if there is over 6in of snow 6in of snow and the drifts will be 6ft tall in places I have a hydraulic driven 7ft snowblower on the front of my jeep
Jim, your 6x6 didn't come with a V-Plow and 2 wings but I am amazed how much snow this thing can go through without getting pushed around or losing traction! It just doesn't seem to have as much weight. He definitely knows what he's doing!
Man, you'll see nothing built like this again. OshKosh still makes a similar snowplow but it all comes down to town's budget to afford one. Towns rather use a front loader with a plow on front thinking they are saving money. Well, these old brutes still do it quicker and more efficiently.
I have a 624 JD loader with a 6 way blade that i can open up to 18 feet. Snow tires. And i only burn 3gph. Need over 5 feet of snow to stop or push me to the side. These old girls are impressive but there is a reason they use equipment. More versatile, push up banks to prevent drifting, clear intersections with ease etc. these things are good in the prairies but here where the hills are you would struggle.
jscott127 Not saying you are doing it wrong, just saying my machine would embarrass you on everything but a highway. Sorry to say, its a way better package for general snow removal. That is why city use graders and loaders not trucks. Graders do all the roads here, plow trucks on main highway only
The county highway department has a 1976 Walters snowplow. It is a two person outfit. one guy drives and runs the v plow and the other runs the wings. It only gets used in certain areas of the county where it drifts
Wow,don,t know how you got some of that footage but congrades. One of the very best snowmoving vids on the net.The guys i worked for had a couple of those rigs (single winged though)For the hp they had those old girls sure would move the white stuff. Thanks for sharing.
I bought a v plow similar to that at a farm auction last year for $5! The auctioneer couldn't get a bid started at $100 so I said "5 bucks".....He looked at me and yelled "SOLD". Even had newish cutting edges on it. Got to find myself something to mount it on now. Got a 4840JD that might work.....take the duals off
Its been a year or so since I've been up on skyline drive but I did wonder if the road drited bad ... guess it does. I'm from Morrisville and we got around 2.5 feet of snow during that storm.
IAM west of you , johnstown, they have a couple of these heavy duty plows in Fulton just off off 5s.I got stuck on Auresville Rd off of 5s on a very steep hill, which was drifted over at the top.The crew pulled the tractor and trailer up the hill thru the snow bank with no problem,I was at least 30,000 pds,it was a Walther's.
know someone in ft plain new york that bought one for little money, all equipped & gassed up, a 72 model, come the blow in o6, February, twp was asking him to come out & clear roads....... this truck is indispensable, but with a blower on the head end & a power pak to drive it , its even more formidable, seen many in Quebec like that.... City of Montreal had a many as ell as out lying communities like isle Jesus..( Laval)
@sneezabonk There are plenty of towns like Kirkland that still run the old Snow Fighter trucks. The town of Ava has one, Rome has I think one Walter, a FWD, an Oshkosh and a smattering of Macks, Watertown has two, these trucks are still out there (alot more FWDs and Oshkoshes than Walters) They are out there, you just gotta be in the right place at the right time.
I grew up in Lewis county, town of Marinsburg. Man I remember running outside to watch the Oshkosh V plow go through and ram that deep snow. Although it is still going on, I don't get to see it living here in Syracuse. Thanks for posting it. Bye the way, what town is this video in?

Cool story 😎👍
That awesome. Thanks for sharing that😎

Sorry about your Dad that was a cool thing to do for your family I shur your Dad was smiling 😔
God BLESS 🙌
Your story almost brought a tear to my eye! Thanks for men like your Dad.
The Westmoreland Highway department had one too. Your Dad cleared some roads for me for sure grew up going to church in Clarks Mills 😊
These things are just amazing. Back up and get a run at the 7' drift, that engine just blatting! Truly amazing. Treat video!
Now, this is what I call a snowplow! I could watch these for hours. Thank you so much Jon Scott.

I never get tired of watching this. Old iron still working, Lets see the new trucks do this!!!
What was it about these incredible trucks that made them so capable? They weren't the heaviest trucks nor the most powerful. Blows my mind every time I see them in action. Could watch them work all day.

Yes we still have this truck in the fleet. If we need it it's 100% ready to go
Awesome video! Reminds me of plowing snow with my grandfather, dad, and uncles. Precious memories.
We still use these old 70's model Osh Kosh trucks.. We have 2 in use at our base here in Cape Breton Nova Scotia .
Grew up in the UP of Michigan. When you heard that sound in the morning = no snow day for you. Time to get up.
It was the same in Binghamton, NY! I loved to watch the plow & hated it 'cause no snow day. The school bus drivers knew how to drive in the snow and the district superintendent trusted them to do their job, safely.
what kind of ttuck .w.D oskosh.

This has got to be the best snow plow truck I have ever seen and I have looked at many here on UA-cam. It is a snow plow tank.
These old plows have old souls, too. Magnificent Equipment!

Man what beast of a snow removal machine.
This guy is having too much fun , that's a beast , Damm I could have fun with that !
My uncle had one just like this Walter he used for years and I never knew until I watched this video they would go that fast we used to just baby his and never plowed over 15 miles an hour with it ????
They were a great old rig but his didnt have a very good heater in it and I almost froze in it on really cold nites..........................
Wish you would have done a walk-around of this truck to show us a bit of this nostalgic beast.
My father drove a light blue Walter snowplow in the mid 1960s for The Town of Easton in Washington County,New York.
The old timer drivin the truck has probably plowed more snow then any of us have ever seen. lol
He plowed this route for 49 years!
Nice vid. My grandpa is the highway superintendent for salisbury NY and the town has one just like this that the factory filled the bed with concrete for the weight and traction
Awesome video, looks like a blast to drive one of those !
Yes. We also have a one-way plow for this truck as well.
Those old girls can push more snow than three regular trucks
I love these awesome plows. My town sold their last one a few years ago. I hate seeing it sitting and not being used.
Beast Mode as it's default setting. Impressive.
nothing better than a walter for plowing , king of plows
HP and torque, it's a beautiful thing.
I wish it would snow ❄like that here in N.C!!!

I remember plowing snow in the mid seventies the good old days
I used one for about 5years, man it would move snow. Mine had a standard trans. Never had any problems with axles breaking. The one in this video is in much better shape.
The axles are planetary drive.
Wow that is awesome! Wish i had snow like that to plow!
great video. Wish I could find a smaller version for my 4 wheel drive tractor. I can't imagine the side thrust on those plows when coming through on the cleanup pass
thats a cummins battering ram haha holy cow thats deep snow !!! keep warm this year !
I've never seen one of those, that's really cool, that is awesome.I thank you for sharing that with us that's nice. It looks like a real torque monster.
Beast mode snow fighter vs monster snowdrifts. Great video with an awesome truck!
still a blower on a payloader after words along with snow fences, keeps the roads open....the V blades work quick in a hurray... but still blow the banks back & claer the blind corners! a must!!!
A true lake Effect event. Been through these in Oswego, and Fulton
now THAT'S A SNOW PLOW I want one I love doing this kind of work
I use a 1973 Jeep grand wagoneer (( Much Modified I might Add )) as a snow plow in the rural hills of SW Iowa ,, I live on a road that the county ignores and I am the only guy of the 5 homes on my road who can get out if there is over 6in of snow 6in of snow and the drifts will be 6ft tall in places I have a hydraulic driven 7ft snowblower on the front of my jeep
wildcoyote34 I'd like to see that if you still have it.
Wow! This old truck looks like it would put the six wheel Western Star I plow with to shame. Nice video!
Jim, your 6x6 didn't come with a V-Plow and 2 wings but I am amazed how much snow this thing can go through without getting pushed around or losing traction! It just doesn't seem to have as much weight. He definitely knows what he's doing!
I plowed that storm in a 1998 2500 international with a 370 n14 cummings 27 hours steady . That is an impressive piece of equipment the 1971 walters
In the town i live in we call the Walter the one pass truck
the only way to plow
Wow! We've been doing it wrong!........................ Prairies LOL!!
Ive seen these old beasts push 12', only other plow ive seen come close is a grader with a V plow & studded chains.
jscott127 Not saying you are doing it wrong, just saying my machine would embarrass you on everything but a highway. Sorry to say, its a way better package for general snow removal. That is why city use graders and loaders not trucks. Graders do all the roads here, plow trucks on main highway only
The county highway department has a 1976 Walters snowplow. It is a two person outfit. one guy drives and runs the v plow and the other runs the
wings.
It only gets used in certain areas of the county where it drifts
This truck is still awesome
Wow,don,t know how you got some of that footage but congrades. One of the very best snowmoving vids on the net.The guys i worked for had a couple of those rigs (single winged though)For the hp they had those old girls sure would move the white stuff. Thanks for sharing.
As long as there are places like Up-State New York or areas with similiar snow fall ammounts the Old Iron will never die.
that truck sounds awesome
I just watched a video of a crew with a 1939 snow fighter. They'd be envious of this.
The plow looks very similar to the plow in front of a diesel locomotive.
thanks Scott, great shots
I bought a v plow similar to that at a farm auction last year for $5! The auctioneer couldn't get a bid started at $100 so I said "5 bucks".....He looked at me and yelled "SOLD". Even had newish cutting edges on it. Got to find myself something to mount it on now. Got a 4840JD that might work.....take the duals off
nice to see you get some snow to make the truck work. grate job
Thank You Jon for all the great videos!!
I remember them clearing off RT495 in Massachusetts, they are even more impressive in person, an American icon.
from 1940,s to the 70,s nantasket beach mass ran a gas and a diesel one of these. it was the only trucks to plow the 6 hills in town during blizzards
Just like plowing with my Honda rubicon. That truck is a beast
Love these old Walter trucks.
Its been a year or so since I've been up on skyline drive but I did wonder if the road drited bad ... guess it does.
I'm from Morrisville and we got around 2.5 feet of snow during that storm.
Man that diesel! Sounds so good
Actually, after 40 years in these trucks he has probably backed through more snow than most people have plowed! :-)
OOH THE PWR!
Looks like a good place for some snow fences
Where in upstate NY do you still have it running? I grew up outside Voorheesville - my father worked at the Walter plant.
They also use to have them in the Duanesburg area in the late 60s and early 70s.
My hats off to you guys !....Sometimes your probably wondering if your still on the roadway or not !
Boys boys it’s not the size of the plow but who’s doing the plowing 👍
Size of their Wallet, yes.
Hell of a good driver.
Excellent video. Thank you!
Town of Niles in CNY had a 71 with a 903 V8 cummins and allison. Double wings too. Would move serious snow. But reliable it wasn't.
Used to be my favorite book when I was little
@TheAnarchistPrince It is an ACUS that was repowered with an Allison automatic transmission.
know someone in ft plain new york that bought one for little money, all equipped & gassed up, a 72 model, come the blow in o6, February, twp was asking him to come out & clear roads....... this truck is indispensable, but with a blower on the head end & a power pak to drive it , its even more formidable, seen many in Quebec like that.... City of Montreal had a many as ell as out lying communities like isle Jesus..( Laval)
@sneezabonk
There are plenty of towns like Kirkland that still run the old Snow Fighter trucks. The town of Ava has one, Rome has I think one Walter, a FWD, an Oshkosh and a smattering of Macks, Watertown has two, these trucks are still out there (alot more FWDs and Oshkoshes than Walters) They are out there, you just gotta be in the right place at the right time.
Excellent Video by the way
I near froze just watching it! Glad I live on the South Shore of NS!!!😎
They even had like a cup holder, but big enough to hold a quart of beer or bottle of Jack
Well, in my town they should have, lol.
I grew up in Lewis county, town of Marinsburg. Man I remember running outside to watch the Oshkosh V plow go through and ram that deep snow. Although it is still going on, I don't get to see it living here in Syracuse. Thanks for posting it. Bye the way, what town is this video in?
The Walter was a real bruiser.
