I'm from Michigan and when the snowfall gets heavy even the widest roads eventually become single lane until they are impassable to anything but 4X4's. I have always been impressed with how well plow drivers can accurately find the edge of the road and not destroy any landscaping. This here is next level.
@@alanlambert-bz4to With enough snow, even a Volvo L60h will not be able to maintain the lane with a straight blade. To much force to one side = plow instead of snow moves out of the way.
I enjoyed this very much. I'm a bit surprised you don't have chains on the machine. I see a lot of guys plowing deep snow like this with nice FEL's like yours and with chains they are almost unstoppable. I know they cost money, but so does time and new tires. Fun to watch no matter how you do it.
Looks like some roads I got caught driving in with my tractor. You eventually can plow so much until the weight of the snow encases your truck in concrete. Many times waiting for these behemoths to free me from winters grip. I really dislike getting stuck and even like backing up several miles with an articulated road in near white out conditions even less. I have a great deal of respect for those who have the balls to drive in these conditions in the mountains or in forestry roads and keep a intact unit without running over or into something else.
I wish we got snow like we used too, now that i got a nice size cab tractor and a snow blower we havent even gotten 3 inchs this whole year. I just wanna move some snow
Brings back memories of grooming the snowmobile trails with a Tucker Snowcat in eastern Washington state. Sometimes 30 miles from the nearest civilization and -32 degrees at the same time...at night!
Many years ago, prior to 1970 , more or less, we in rural W. Central PA often had heavy snowfalls falls, deep drifts, especially before 1955. Drifts were often as deep as those shown in this video with the highway dept. using a variety of snow-moving equipment including 'V' shaped plows and snow blowers and when these couldn't get through the drifts, they brought in bulldozers to open our roads. One way or another, they accomplished their mission of keeping the roads open. PennDot leaned that snow fences were of great benefit in these early years and were used annually [they are not used anymore]. Occasionally, I would be out of school for a week waiting for roads to be opened and the schools never closed, as they do these days at the drop of one snowflake, or so it seems. I also had to walk a mile [one way] to my bus stop, winter or summer, rain or shine or snow...it didn't matter the condition. I went to school unless the buses couldn't get through. I am now 80 yrs. old and I remember those days...
@@alanlambert-bz4to Yes, my thoughts, too, even as to why they would use such an ineffective/inefficient way of snow removal on these back roads. They are working harder, not better as they manage a narrow passage way with the snow simply piling up along each side, only to return onto the roadway once the plow has passed by...from the wind and from simply natural drifting downward. Oh, well...not my place to critique, I guess...
@@Romavictor1 My thoughts also...but...if they can't be opened and kept open for when service engineers need to get there, then why waste the time and money doing what they are doing. Look at the roads/watch what happens immediately after [and shortly after] the roads are 'plowed'. They fill right back up...much of them, but not totally but much of them..and so, let's say you're a service tech needing to get out there fast or at least promptly...people's lives depend upon you...would you be happy with those 'plowed' roads? I think not as the plowing is far from being sufficient/adequate. Just my opinion...wishing you well...
i believe that a snow blower would be better in these conditions because that road will be covered to the height of those banks when the next snow comes
@@PlowAndGrow No, that is a foolish thought. You folks are not the only people who live or have lived in snow-prone areas...I, too, have lived there. If snow is of such concern, install snow fences along the roadways, a piece away from the roadway itself, for the first measure. Then, when snow removal off the roads is necessary, get the road snow as far away from the road as possible and away from the usual windward direction, if possible. That 'V' plow in the video barely made room for an ATV, especially after the wind returned the snow to the road [which had just been plowed, if one can call it that] and or simply fell back onto the roadway because it was not pushed far enough away from the road...simply and naturally falling back onto the roadway. Oh, well...your life...not mine...
I’ve seen folks in similar situations getting stopped by the snow pile, sometimes dozens of times. I always come back to the thought of putting the blade only half way down, and plowing through it with assumed ease, then backing up and drop the blade all the way and do it again. Can you please tell me why that would not work? Thanks.
I think it looks like an old "Luhol 351" but without the side wings. F.W Lundholm AB Luhol förplog 351D. They made several plows of different sizes. If I am correct, it is an old Swedish military plow from the 70s. Maybe someone can confirm it or correct me.
Eventually the roadway gets narrower and narrower because the snow falls back down behind the plow. Snow can only be piled as high as the plow blade height. Ideally if you had another unit with a blower that would be the ticket. Also with unpaved roads either dirt or gravel it’s easier to keep the blade about an inch above the ground or even let it bounce up and down a bit. I plowed snow in cities and the country for about 30 years and learned little tips and tricks along the way. Been retired now almost 20 yrs and actually miss doing it.
You are right! We usually do this just to open up the roads, Then we go back over the again eaither with the same plow but just using one side to widen and throw the snow away or we go over them with a backmounted snowblower. Thank you for watching!
Prova lyft plogen och vagga den sida till sida när det börjar slira, den ser ut att gräva ner sig i vägen och du tappar all tyngd på framhjulen, Just a tips👌
With that drifting you should be set up with a straight blade you can angle so you can put the snow to the opposite side of the drift. I battled many driveways and roads that drifted in on the mountains and that’s how you stop those big drifts
*Well done* especially at the beginning. I watch because I pushed snow for 5 years in Michigan, in a very old/worn out 20 ton frontend loader. I understand this issue doesn't belong to you, but as the video progressed the windmills became annoying and kinda ruined the video. The annoying part is most visible at 16.52 where the once beautiful landscape and scenery was replaced by spinning blades that [imo], just didn't seem to belong there. As for the plowing, you did a great job.
That path looks like it was pre-plowed before this plowing. Judging from how hard the Volvo L60h is working, I'd say that it would not have "a snowball's chance in hell" in getting through this time.
V plows suck. Many years moving snow in big lots to open fields and major developments with everything from dump trucks to loaders and 1/2 ton pu with one of the first Western boxes. You should have wings out to kill those banks down. A straight blade or even a power V ( not my favorite either) would give you the ability to cut breaks and stack as well as dump to the low bank. They don't use them in the high mountains of the alps for a reason. You managed to make it but they need to send a clean up truck to push the snow back, stack, put in breaks. Make your job a lot easier to keep access open.
That's actually a quite large tractor doing the work, don't let the view fool ya, and it is 4 wheel drive, the tires alone standing 5 ft tall...I'd say the snow is average 3ft deep with some places as high as 4-5ft while the piles along the roads being at least 5 feet high and above 6 in some places...not many things bigger than this tractor that might be usable for this work...
I think you would have an easier time with plowing in deep snow if you turned your boom suspension off…not really supposed to have it on when you are plowing snow…

Great video, a couple of times I thought they were not going to find you untill spring.
It's always amazing how they always plow it back to the way the wind blows it
What is amazing about that?
How would you do it? Can’t wait to hear your answer.
With the plow he is using that is the drawback. Use a wide straight angled blade with wings to clear that type of road
One other way to stop snow in the road would be to blade parallel on the wind side to catch the snow before it gets to the road !

A blower, while nice for sure, would take two to four times as long to do the job. It is just not worth it in a lot of cases.
