    So calm, accented by the ice sounds. Pure beauty in the night!

    Great light and wonderful ice sounds in this one. The Missouri in action ice breaking was a treat too. Really enjoyed it. Cheers!

    Strange sounds indeed, and I love the tug Missouri zooming around making the way clear. Interesting clinking and clunking, beautiful steam and cold night, incredible views all the way through this video. I wish them safe passage and a warm harbor to rest in.

      Yes, I hope they are all back home and with their families now. (They went into winter layup on Sunday.) March 25 will be here before they know it. 🙂

    I think if I was a deckhand on the American Integrity, I'd immediately head down to the engine room to warm up after attending to my work assignment. I'm sure those V-20s keep the engine room nice and toasty for winter. Not so good for summer, though.😄

    • @1Long2Short
      @1Long2Short  2 дні тому +2

      And the guys in the engine room are probably running up on deck to cool off! 🥵 😁

    I wonder how many miles it is to the soo locks from Duluth on lake Superior.

    • @1Long2Short
      @1Long2Short  2 дні тому

      I plotted it on Google Earth as approximately 400 miles using the most direct path that lakers take during good weather. It’s roughly a 26-hour trip from Duluth to the Soo if traveling about 15-16 mph.

      Thank you! The inner harbor was pretty calm, so I wasn’t too cold. But the wind was much less pleasant along the canal. 🥶

    Is this the only ship on the Lakes that looks like it just came "from the shop"? Perhaps they carry paint and do touch-ups en route.

    • @scottburns2600
      @scottburns2600 2 дні тому +1

      Most of the ASC thousand footers are in desperate need of paint. I was just thinking how this one doesn't look as bad. Maybe it's the darkness? Lol. Anyway, the Burns Harbor is in dry-dock this year, so I'm praying they touch her up for once

    • @VangoghsDoggo

      @@scottburns2600 Depends on the weather I think. If there is time, they do it, but they need nice spring weather with the canal still iced in at Sturgeon Bay. If the ice is out, they guys in the yard are working OT to finish up if they haven't and things not needed, like paint, are cut from the list. They do paint them only if needed as it has to be done under huge canvases/tarps and heated, so it's limited. Sometimes, that is why they look patchy.

    • @1Long2Short
      @1Long2Short  2 дні тому

      Of the ASC 1000-footers, the American Integrity does have the best looking paint job when seen in the daylight. She must have been the most recent one to be painted. Ironically, the ASC boat to get one of the most recent paint jobs was the St. Clair… and then she burned within a year. It was sad to see her at the scrapyard looking so nice with her fresh paint.

      I was guessing that it's an indicator for the front of the ship at night. Cool video

    • @scottburns2600
      @scottburns2600 2 дні тому +2

      Its used as a steering aid. They'll lock that light onto a range-light in the rivers, and it helps them manually stay center of the channel

      @Team_BW your welcome. I had the luck of shipping out on the Burns Harbor as a deckhand, then as an engine wiper. It was a pretty short sailing career, but I got to know a few things anyway. Lol

    Great audio detail! What are you using for audio recording?

    • @1Long2Short
      @1Long2Short  2 дні тому

      Thanks Kevin! I’m just using a budget Rode Video Micro plugged into the camera. It’s a mono mic, but is directional in nature, so it captures what I point it at… and tends to ignore the stuff behind me (like people talking). It also does a fantastic job of cutting out the wind noise… plus it distorts less than other mics I’ve used. It’s also small enough that I can leave it mounted to my camera when I put it in my bag… a tiny luxury that appeals to my lazy side. I’d love to have nice stereo sound, but I have yet to find the right mic for the job.

    They get painted every 5 years Indiana harbor is getting done now

    • @1Long2Short
      @1Long2Short  2 дні тому +1

      Burns Harbor is currently in dry dock. The opportunity to repaint them is when they are in dry dock, but it seems the ASC boats tend to skip the repainting. In contrast, I suspect we’ll see the Paul R. Tregurtha get some fresh paint this winter, as she will dry dock after the Burns Harbor.
