    I actually prefer Troi wearing a proper Starfleet uniform like this. It helps that her character became more likeable around the same time, what with the writers finally producing some decent scripts for her.

      Not to mention this is one of the uncommon instances of her doing her proper job, and doing it well without the "I can sense stuff" thing.

      agreed. though it makes sense for her to not wear it. There was often some separation between officers and enlisted personnel. People that went to the counsellor put themselves in emotionally vulnerable positions - wearing your rank insignia could intimidate crewmen, especially if they had problems with officers or if they felt uncomfortable talking about their personal problems with "people from work". It also made for a more liberated and non-official atmosphere during counseling

      It's actually one of my favorite scenes in Star Trek when Jellico orders her to put on a standard uniform. He was right she is an officer. Her outfit was nice but hardly appropriate. More of an off duty look.

    • @Levi_Skardsen
      @Levi_Skardsen 4 роки тому +33

      The canon reason she didn't wear a uniform was because Picard believed the crew would feel more at ease with her if she wasn't so official looking.

      Perfectly phrased. It's not that everyone on Nu Trek are bad writers- and TNG had plenty of bad writing as well if you look at the episodes we prefer to forget- but it wouldn't even occur to them to *try* to make a show that captures what made TNG good.

      I'm watching Strange New Worlds right now, and I have to say it's avoided 20 of the pitfalls with Discovery and Picard - it's actually trying to feel like Star Trek. It's not perfect, but
      1) There doesn't seem to be unqualified officers on the ship, like Tilly and others.
      2) There is cooperation, respect and friendship among the crew. No women telling off men or anything like that.
      3) No obsessive crying
      4) No major and unwelcome changes to canon as far as I can tell after 4 episodes
      5) Spock is much more likable and true to his character in this version
      6) Shoving diversity down your throat seems to be toned down quite a bit. Other than maybe the helmsman who has a hair cut that doesn't really fit the time period and the aesthetic for Star Trek, most characters seem to fit the franchise. But even with the helmsman, they haven't even mentioned anything about them, which I am hoping is the case for the last 6 episodes because I could care less about their gender identity and sexual preferences.
      6) The captain is likeable rather than the monster in Discovery.
      7) There is no gore and senseless violence, which is something I really disliked about Picard. They completely destroyed Seven of Nine imo - really hated her casual disrespect for life.
      8) I think it's watchable with kids so far, which I would not say Discovery or Picard is appropriate for kids at all
      I'm hoping the next 6 episodes don't disappoint, because I absolutely hated Discovery season 1 and Picard Season 1.

    It actually surprises me very much that Starfleet doesn't have regulations about Starship captains dating or marrying their subordinates. This is _extraordinarily_ well precedented.
    First, Starfleet is a bureaucracy, organized around numerous ends, up to and including the fighting of wars and the managing of crises.
    Second, the US Military is a _collection_ of bureaucracies organized around numerous ends up to and including the fighting of wars and the managing of crises.
    Third, the US Military has regulations requiring that, any time two people in the same command (right up to the commanding officer) get married, one of them has to immediately transfer to a _different_ command on the grounds that the two of them continuing to serve in the _same_ command opens up conflicts of interest like the one explored in this episode. You don't want an organization dedicated to fighting wars and managing crises hamstrung with conflicts of interest.
    Now if the US Military has enough precedent to see the sense in regulations like these, why doesn't Starfleet?

      kefka3 it's not really hard to believe. I would have to look it up but she's basically a staff position or a specialist. She's not really in the same position as Riker, where she's high up in the chain of command. She's not going to be running the ship if Riker dies. She has a rank suitable to her responsibilities and so that starfleet officers listen to her orders when she gives them. She's a senior officer and so can't be of a low rank if she's to perform her duties. Maybe if every other senior officer was killed off or unavailable she would have to take command but really she's just the head of her department so to speak.

    • @gf4670
      @gf4670 8 років тому +66

      Well it's just the naval difference between line officers and staff officers. The line officers are the actual officers who command the ship's activities, but there are 2 kinds: unrestricted and restricted. The unrestricted line officers are the actual command structure and do the tactical work when needed and the restricted line officers are the engineers and scientists who run the daily tasks aboard the ship. Then there are the staff officers who form the medical corps and the JAGs and chaplains and that stuff--these are essentially civilian careers that the military also makes use of. So in the Trek-verse, at least from TNG onward, the red shirts were the unrestricted line officers, the gold are the restricted line officers, and the blue are the staff officers.

    • @AlexandarHullRichter
      @AlexandarHullRichter Рік тому

      Well, it's based on navy ranks. In the Navy, coming in with a degree means you're inherently an officer. An advanced degree, like a doctorate in phycology, would have her enter the service as a lieutenant. Lieutenant-Commander is only a single promotion from there, and she's been in Starfleet a long time.

      Remember, supposedly evolved sensibilities. Most of the drama of the series comes from humanity/the Federation coming face to face with the realization that a) not everyone is as evolved as they are (queue alien of the week/vice expy character) or b) they're not past those issues themselves despite what they like to believe.

    This scene only encapsulates one rendition of protocol and the interference of pleasure. What would've been more interesting to me would've been rules that do not have any inherent function other than to mislead, coerce or handicap the lower working order of any organization. Protocols are only good if they serve either an individual or greater benefit. If they have no such function, it's just a remnant of tradition that should've long been discarded. Efficiency should always come before protocol.

      Her advanced education (doctorate in psychology, whatever other training required for counselor services) would have her enter Starfleet with a more advanced rank as a staff officer. In the Navy, being a doctor would have her start as a lieutenant. Lt. Cmdr is only a single promotion from there.
