What is FIGMA doing with your data?

- Here are my thoughts on the recent Figma announcement about you needing to OPT OUT from your data being processed by OpenAI.
Yes, OPT OUT, while it should be on an opt IN basis.

We don't know what features this is going to improve exactly, which adds to the already circulating scary stories.
This is my conclusions only and I will be happy to include clarifications and more detailed explanations from Figma and other parties in future videos. For now, it is what it is. My thoughts.

Earlier today I removed the FigmaAgent.exe from my PC. I'm slowly transitioning to Penpot, and from now on, I consider creating my new projects there. Even though setting up Penpot offsite involves more stuff to be done, but it's more flexible. If you have an old PC laying around, I think it would be great to hook it up to the home router, make some changes, install Penpot on it, and have your own household Penpot cloud, completely free of data snooping. How cool is that!
Yeah I think penpot nailed it with this approach.
The flexibility of deployment (public cloud, private cloud, local cloud) is one of the best Penpot features, and one of the most underrated ones. 👏
Thanks for putting penpot on my radar with this comment. I'm just learning figma so now I'll switch applications instead of investing more time in being an AI mule.
I had no idea about the browser tab data sharing, that honestly enrages me. Thank you for this video ❤
That was privacy policy from 2021, maybe it changed. In either case if you're using a tool it's worth reading what they do with your data.
Big Corporations are trustable, of course...
They "CARE"! 😂
@@MalewiczHype
100% real, haha
Geez this video notification just got me after reading the email from Figma, thanks for your opinion on the matter. Figma is already so standardize that many people think that is the only way. I'm going to start checking some other design softwares. Figma has helped me a lot as you say for countries like Cuba (where I'm based) and LATAM countries is a life savior, but that does not mean we should make Figma a god like.
Totally! There are alternatives and the skills you learned (how to design) can transfer to any tool easily :)
@@MalewiczHype Thanks for your videos 💙
Whenever I get asked about my toolset by a prospective client, I always reply that I use whatever tools are currently in use or the ones that are most suitable for the job, including coding the prototypes in case of web apps. Tools don't matter.
Yeah.. this is definitely a matter of concern and you are an eye opener for many!
That's why figma CEO has me blocked ;)
if adobe was cheap or free, i get it (kinda) but to make us pay and make money off our work is insult ontop of an insult.
Well you cannot OPT OUT if you're on a free plan, so I guess there's that ;)
Quick question: what monitor are you using for your UI work? I need a 27" 4k retina for my Mac, but ive read that the upscaling causes issues and i need a 5k model for true scaling... i wanted to hear from the master if you've encountered any issues with upscaling and small text? Thank you!
I use the 5K studio display from apple
@@MalewiczHype using only the best. I should have known 🔥 I don't suppose you have used any other monitor in the past you can recommend that are both retina and Mac friendly? Thanks and keep up the incredible work. You're doing this community proud 👏
I used the LG Ergo 4K (two of them) and didn't experience any bad scaling issues.
That a good point, and I work under an NDA and in an industry which question allot of this data sharing A.I does to learn so this could get called into question what exactly are we sharing, and how might it effect us in the future?
Apple (a secretive company) apparently forbids their employees to use Figma (since the beginning) - mainly because of security issues - but not sure how accurate it is - just heard it.
What tool do you use professionally. I am stuck on windows. Is Penpot mature enough to rely on? Thanks in advance
Penpot gets better with every release, but there are some small bugs here and there. However it has some advantages if you look past the bugs, so I'd say for now it has an "early adopter" hurdle, but still worth jumping into even part-time leaving some work in Figma.
This is a bit of a misrepresentation of what was actually stated in the email. To quote: "We will only send the information you provide when using AI features. We also have an agreement that prohibits OpenAI from using any Figma customer data for training purposes."
It's of course fine to not trust companies to do what they say they're doing, and considering whether or not you want to take that risk is fine. But to claim OpenAI will use your data to train AI models is a bit much when the exact opposite is being stated in the email.
I never said open AI will train models, all I said is that "information you provide using AI features" is vague (on purpose). Because you may be using some AI features (in the backend) that you're not even aware about. It's legalese that can pass up for anything.
@@MalewiczHype yeah don't get me wrong, I do think the overall message is solid, I just wish it was covered from a slightly different angle here. Even just mentioning the part I quoted once without changing anything else would have been sufficient in my opinion.
Taking the offensive, I see 😅
That being said, the last time I gave penpot a go, it was a laggy mess. Maybe it's time to try it out again. Does it have feature parity with Figma?
Thanks for sharing this!
where can i change my profile info in the website, i couldn't find support page can i get some help
hover the mouse over your profile picture after loggin in
thank you , i did and managed to change it @@MalewiczHype
Thank you for sharing this and telling the truth ❤❤
I'm not sure what the truth here is yet, other than to be cautious and carefully read what they say.
what about your taughts and whats the future will be is there no job will be for designer like those who are studying like mee and what's about your taught and tell me what can i do to not be replaced by ai as i am currently in learning phase of ux ui design
Figma will not integrate such AI that will generate a complete design... because then, people will never use it's own feature... doing something like that will cause their own platform to be worthless. What they will do, is they will integrate an AI assistent that will generate some portions of the design and it will be up to us that how we will further improve it. Bad learners and designers will always create a worst out of it even with the help of AI, and great learners like you will always try to improve what provided by the AI. so, you don't have to worry about that but, what you can do, is try to learn one more skill side by side like Programming, Digital Marketting, SEO, Animation, Business analytics, etc... so that your future will be double secured. All the best for future my friend!
What's stopping them from switching from designers as customers, to businesses and changing the business model? Never say never.
@@MalewiczHype You are right, sir, but sometimes I think that AI must be restricted to some extent... at least for now... This AI revolution is too fast to keep track of, up until now it was steady.. but now no one is fully aware of the whole scene every single day, new AI stuff is coming... what do you think, should AI grow this fast?...
XD>Figma>Penpot
I'm having another transition now 😅
Looks cool though (part time designer here)
just watched the penpot keynote - strange CEO, but let that pass - it seems a nice alternative, but he does mention the eventual inclusion of text gen on the ai side and I conclude it's probably going to use some kind of gpt system ultimately. I'll download and see how it works for me, though.
There are free and open source ai text generators too
so basically they're going torying to remove the existence of designers, by using designers?
Sitting here using Sketch just moving boxes.
Welcome to the box moving club!
I was considering using Figma. What should I do now?
Read the privacy policy, see if you agree and if you do then use Figma.
I like to use affinity designer.. I miss the days when we just designed, you know?
yeah
Just make together a petition
It would be great if they use this AI to automatically generate prototypes of my views. I hope this AI will be here to help, like automatically generate a Style Guide from a couple of frames selected and things like that. Saludos.
Can you share this e-mail from figma also ?
It's at the beginning of the video
ironically never got this announcement lol
Forgot to say "Please, have a wonderful day!" :D
Didn’t forget ;)
Sometimes I believe that we can create the companies of the future, specially with our Product Design Skills. Let's do it !
That depends if you know when to stop :)
Rather politican systems of the future ;)
It's kind of ironic - paying a middle-man to give you the tools to reproduce your own work. I didn't receive any ai from Figma yet - are GDPR rules different here for Europe over the UK?
Not sure about GDPR, maybe it went to spam ;) And keep in mind that I'm NOT saying that this is what they're doing - it's just a possibility that I believe many companies will push in the future. But their definition of AI usage is very murky.
can't anybody like sue them or something ? this is just evil
This is the age of AI, after all
It is better to learn how to exploit him than for him to exploit us
Don't look at me I voted for #Axure. 😊
I actually like that they are using this stuff for training the AI. I would happily replace myself and change careers if AI could actually do real UI/UX work.
However, the stuff about tracking browser tabs and search history is shady af. Given that Adobe now owns Figma I give the platform 5 years max before something overtakes them. There innovation is slow, they track to much data, the pricing is not great.
figma ever had a bright side ? 🤔
Yes. Enabling people that don't own a Mac to design and helping thousands from all over the world start learning design.
Their role in this is crucial.
But a lot of the rest is kinda shady.
I don't use Figma in my workflow, but this is why if you're "really" worried about A.I. taking over your job, then you should stop using it. By using it you're contributing to it, sometimes even without your consent.
I use A.I.-assisted generations for less important work only and never for anything related to my interpersonal life.
If you're a tech-savvy user, you could technically block all outgoing internet connection from Adobe and other apps if you know what to do, thus preventing them from sending your information back to the cloud. Sadly you risk breaking some of the cloud features if you do so.
And if you're on Windows, Microsoft already collected a lot of your habits using their telemetry deep inside Windows 11. I've kept preaching for decentralization efforts for years, especially for monopoly like Adobe.
I am Adobe free since 2014 and I'm happy about that :)
Może odcinek o zastąpieniu Adobe innymi opcjami ? :)
O yeah, here's 3 years worth of my data for them to create a function for AI to generate some shitty component that I'll have to edit myself
There's also negative learning for AI, meaning using badly created stuff as examples of what not to do, so there's potential for AI to be trained from multiple sources - likely under human supervision.
We don't know for sure if this is what they're doing, as the features they defined are vague (probably on purpose)
Does it really matter at this point? Figma is a great program but it also hurt the industry at the same time, it made it to easy to become a designer. Its like no-code page builders, they slowly cripple the profit margins as access becomes "easy". So let's say they improve their tool with AI, I can't see them making options to auto generate designs, it's only going to result in less subscribers as so many people will lose their job as they will be replaced meaning less subscriptions. I just can't see them doing it, only way I can see this is happening is if they hire some TikTok influencer and push their brand in the wrong direction lol....
Adobe be like 💰💸
Cha-ching!
Phigma came up with a "bo*ster d*se" finally 😉 let's see how many people take the hint (not too many sadly) 😂
Most people don't read the big print, much less the fine one.
Wa feen a abdo
This is going to be the case in all design tools whether Figma or any future successor. They’re just adapting to the latest industries. You’re just a Figma hater tbh.
No, I don't hate applications, that's silly.
I only talk facts and let people make up their minds. And sure I don't use Figma myself, but many people do and I hope to show them the direction I think the company is going.
I don’t think there’s anything good about AI in design or in the real world. Dystopian future here we come
