5 levels of UI skill. Above 4 gets you hired.

- After reviewing over 600 UX/UI portfolios last year I started to notice that most designers make the same mistakes. Over and over.
I shared these patterns and differences with you twice already, and this time let's share it on a larger canvas - a more complex, web design with cards, photos, a map view and more.
There are five distinct UI levels, or skill levels and only being above 4 will result in getting a UI design job.
Watch the video to find out which skill level are you and what to focus on to progress to the next level faster. Of course it's all in the details! Become a great UX/UI designer.
Step one is to focus on the actual skills and not specific design tools. Then you need to get an "eye for design details" - you can practice it exactly by watching this specific video.
You may be able to spot even more things wrong with the designs that I didn't mention - that's great!
🚨 This is based on my own experiences with over a 1000 junior designers and their portfolios, tracking which ones later got an industry job and which ones didn't.
☝️ IMPORTANT: The screens shown as these examples are only focusing on LOOKS, not the UX because the product doesn't exist. If someone tells you recruiters will analyse the UX and how it makes sense of a fake, made-up product in a junior portfolio then sorry - 90% of the time ONLY UI matters.
When you get your first job you'll get wireframes and instructions to deliver the proper structure.
This is just to show UI-skill differences.
So...
Yes, I believe you can be a level five designer. Do you?
☝️ Watch next and be awesome!

After all of Michal's courses I am at level 5 and normally work freelance for various clients with results :) Thank you Michal for your knowledge!
Well, in that case I leave this video with hope, thank you :D PS great playlist with trance, saved :)
Great video Michal, thank you for posting!
I have been watching you for around a year now, I even bought your UI Design book and it has been extremely helpful, you have contributed so much to my growth so just wanted to say thank you and keep up the amazing work like you always do! ❤❤🔥🔥
When you showed level 2 I was already scared of level 1, but when I saw it I remembered that I already took projects like this for redesign 😢
Yes, they do exist!
amazing video , this type of video make us to observe and learn more the mistakes that we always do in our design , So thank you and please keep up Michal.
Glad it was helpful!
Your detailed breakdown of the five levels for junior designers is incredibly helpful for those looking to improve their design skills. Can you share a specific tip or technique that junior designers often overlook when trying to reach Level 4 or above?
Great as always!
Thank you for this video!
Now I know I have so much to improve :'3 I'll try to become lvl 4 at least asap! 🙏👏
Go for it!
You forgot to mention about two years of commercial experience at the start.
I have a new found confidence in my designs. Thank you! 😂
That is one of my goals 💪
The level 1 might be indeed rare but i have seen so many of those in "self guided" community groups especially from Google UX Course ☠️ and the typos are even in some level 4 work too, about time people start giving "copy" the due attention it needs. Besides that, as always golden content and the transitions were 🎯😎
Yeah typos happen - of course, but in a portfolio it's really crucial to check it every single time and just be sure :) Thanks!
Is Google ux course that bad ? I wanna learn ux design. I do have a designer background...how do I learn uiux design on my own ..can you tell me what are the things I should study ...please
@@gamelabpc6591 @Malewicz has a whole 7 part series of his review for the Google UX Course, check that out first and you will have a lot more clarity :)
@@gamelabpc6591 I think it's a good course for UX, but they don't teach you UI, so you are going to see many bad UI designs.
I would Agree that some people as you've said, self Guided provide worst design in Google Ux Course. But not everyone is bad, I've encountered some quite talended designers on Google Ux Design course.
I've observed on thing that managing consist spacing is quite challenging. You've to divide the frame and design elements in systematic way to achieve it.
For most of my Designs I'm on level 4 and sometimes on 5.
Yes, that is very important. Even with bad typography and colors, if spacing is right it will feel instantly better.
omg this is so helpful thank you, and can I sak you something? what is the font you are using for your thumbnails? I loved it and wanna use similar fonts as well:) I saw it in your instagram account as well...
loved to see avoburger in the wild :D. great video
maybe we’ll open avoburger in some cities 😂
As much as I am impressed with the flashy marketing (in attempt to get us to purchase your courses) and the great editing of the video with the impressive designs you have included, it doesn't matter how "SKILLED" the designer is for level 5 if they don't even know how to use auto layouts and make repeatable components in the design.
I disagree. People need to learn how to make something good, autolayout and components are for larger projects with dev work, but what buts you in is a very strong visual side. Not tools.
@@MalewiczHypeIt is really strong visual! Keep rocking! 🎉
not really related to the vid but i NEED to see you roast zdajto, its design is PAINFUL
no idea what that is 😱
The Restaurants tab in the first design (Level 5) should also have a slight gradient, yes?
not necessarily - single color makes it stand out from the button
i am a 2 month beginner i think i am at level 5 already hahahah thank you a lot for the insight!
congrats
What actual apps did you design? I would love to see what a final product originating from your design looks like.
A couple hundred. squareblack.com - we will be adding more to the portfolio soon too.
@@MalewiczHype Yeah I was on your site before, but I was having trouble to find the actual apps from the mentioned companies. For example; I would love to try out the App you've made for "booking Holdings" but I don't know what the actual Apps name is or where your design was implemented. I would like to experience the full UX with your design.
By the way, thanks for making great design accessible for everyone, I already learned so much from your awesome guides and videos. 👍
Hi, do you think artificial intelligence and Midjourney tools will replace UI designers in the near future, and the demand will only be for UX?
no, ai will not replace designers. Having strong generalist skills is super important though- ui, ux, some strategy and business skills, and soft skills.
I remember seeing the mobile version of it and improving myself (at least I believe)
Amazing news! 1% better every day!
Hello, Michal! Quick question: I want to purchase "Design Better UI: Mobile Apps Bundle" or the ebook "Designing User Interfaces." I have previous knowledge as a designer, but I want to strengthen my fundamentals and level up my work. Unfortunately, I have money just for one (even with the 20% discount). Which one would you recommend me to buy?
the courses are more hands-on and practical 🫡

Where is your shirt from?????????????

Does anyone know a free ux essential course to start... couldn't find one ...
check my become a designer playlist
@@MalewiczHype thanks
TO me, when Im looking at junior portfolios for consideration, spelling errors and Lorem Ipsum is THE laziest thing you can easily fix. That's an instant resume in the trash.
Yeah, same with me.
I am Level 5 and still have trouble getting hired
There's other factors too - like networking, thinking outside of the box, having enough stuff in your portfolio and being open minded. Those levels are just the minimum entry for UI roles, given everything else is also in place.
Seriously, have a wonderful day and stare :)). I am afraid of him somehow haha
I give myself 4.5 😎😊
Congrats!
Maybe I'm in 4?
How can i know 😅
Being between 3 and 4 is a great place to be as it's easy to progress from there!
@@MalewiczHype i think after 60 days of doing ui challenge i start love my work more 😅
That's the goal! And after 90 days you'll be superhuman!
@@MalewiczHype Thanks ❤️❤️❤️🔥🤩
To make a long story short: don't be sloppy👍
I like the old internet more. :( All this new UI stuff is simplistic and dumb! :/ Level 2 was the best tbh! >_
I also like the old internet, but things must also serve a purpose - there's still room for experiments with skeuomorphism mixed in with current trends and I will be building some stuff to prove it :)
@@MalewiczHype Sounds really neat! :D
Healthy content. ✨️ God Almighty bless you through his Son, our God Jesus Christ, Michal. 🎉
Have you seen parts 1 and 2 of this series? :)
Yes!
dude no one designs like level 1, and just because you are in level 5 doesn't mean you will get a job... just UI doesn't mean anything
You'd be surprised how many level 1 projects I receive for feedback - from all over the world.
And UI does matter for a lot of companies. So no, level 5 doesn't guarantee you a job, but being under level 4 practically guarantees you won't get one.
1st
You were indeed first by a few milliseconds! ;)
