i started spinning goa in the mid 90s... also the religious like feeling
was very present.. I will follow your series, i think it will be fun to start from the source of it all.

Hey... Happened to just see this... Ive been fortunate to be part of the rave parties in Mumbai, Bombay then... '95 &'96. Have been following that wonderful trippy music ever since

Nice intro to goa trance. There are LOTS of topics to be tackled there, I'm thinking of the following:
    - Samplers were a big thing back then, it was the only way to not have have standard 808 or 909 drum sounds for instance
    - Creative use of mixing desk (mixing in the box did not exist back then ^^) and I think it did play a role in shaping the sound and composition/style of arrangement
    - FM synth were also quite popular in goa trance back then

I really miss those goa parties when I 1st started trance parties back in '97 (soft n comfy was my 1st out at witchpegs a hippy community in the mountains), they had a visualizer projector on a tree and as the wind blew the tree, the visuals morphed, was very much alive...never seen that since, pity!

Really enjoy psytrance parties and thought it was basically like the new rave scene, but when I saw some footage of goa events in the mid 90s, I saw so many similarities with the music, people, vibe etc. Can’t believe I’m only finding our about it now.

All the reasons why Goa often sounds much better than Psytrance. Psytrance is at times so minimalistic and overproduced and all these FX sounds can‘t really make up the lack of a strong arp melody 🤷‍♂️

goa is a bliss, psytrance is too cold at times

That’s what I try to do with my music: melody is king, but with more modern production techniques.

nice! good introduction, but i hope you'll also include something about how new goa trance differs from old goa or other styles of psytrance. hardware and its limitations shaped the sound of the old days but for newschool goa that's not applicable anymore.

Also the idea of an evolving melody like that comes from traditional indian music. When the dj's and partypeeps came to goa they were heavily influenced by the local music. Think mantras and ragas.

man, i loved California Sunshine back in 90's.. i kinda lost interest in genre for many years, it was hard to find something that sounded fresh and interesting.. loved Infected Mushroom too, a lot, but i find harder and harder to enjoy their newer stuff.. atm. i'm all into Mandragora.. there are still strong trance roots in his music, but his interpretations are so refreshing for me and i got that storytelling feel from his stuff..

I'm honestly not a big fan of most psytrance, but I love old Goa Trance👍 It has this "organic"-ish sound and use of Hindu/New Age themes that just comes together to make it sound IMO more "psychedelic" than Psytrance. I wish there would be more of a return to tracks like Mahadeva by Astral Projection or Mai Mai by Jaia (if you've never heard it, I highly recommend doing so). Honestly, creativity comes with technical limitations, and it feels to me like most modern dance music of all genres (most of which is produced via DAW) is just less interesting than the older music produced via hardware. And I'm saying that as someone who is only 28 and has grown up with computers. Goa Trance artists just seemed willing to experiment as much as possible, with almost nothing out-of-bounds, and it was influential in so many later genres including a lot of early progressive trance (which I will always love).

great reason to use hardware synths. Use what you actually have, so that you develop a style and sound that resembles who you are and what equipment you have. Plugins and presets are great, but your specific style and sound will get lost.
