Central Air Conditioner Leaks Water On Floor: Part 1 Clogged AC drain line (DIY)

- No.08 The "P trap" in my Central Air was clogged with dirt and debris. This caused AC to freeze and leaked water on the floor. I replaced the P trap and cleaned the drain hole and it works great again. But HVAC experts strongly suggest i put it back, so check out Part2 & Part 3 of this DIY project.

I liked that draining idea (t-connection)... classic!
Purchased: August 2023 - still works GREAT!I ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxxsUnXhGsSJLim_XnMHyQK0u3XVaW-CGn live in a studio and during the summer it gets scorching hot - really old building with no ac units. I can’t express how EASY it was to install. This unit has been a life savior during the summer and some days during other seasons where it can still be a bit warm at night. In this small place is my friend, a husky, poodle mix and myself. We need AC - lolI don’t use the dehumidifier option - I’m not sure if it will leak in my house, since I did not install the small draining hose that came with it. May look into it late but I don’t worry about much humidity in the apartment. I don’t understand why the negative reviews since all things mentioned, I personally did not find issues with. Definitely worth it!
Awesome! Glad it worked for you.
Thank you so much for showing this , today I noticed there was a leakage from the unit in my garage , now I know what to do .
Tx for taking the time to make this video. All the comments just complete the video. Both are necessary.
The best video I've seen so far; Thanks a million!
Glad it helped! Thank you for the visit.
Thank you! You saved me the service call and hassle of swapping out soaking towels for a week while I waited for the service call...
Glad it helped you out Joey. You're welcome.
thank you! my parents went out of town and I found the furnace leaking! this helped a lot
Okay I know it a couple years after you posted this but had to tell you thanks for your effort and time. You saved me some hard earned cash. Thanks Bud.
Glad it helped you out Zar. I know it was going to cost me an arm and a leg also if i listened to the AC guy that give me a quote to fix it. He said i had to get a new AC unite outside. It only cost me less then $30 for PVC and glue. Crazy!
Love the t-trap! Doing it tomorrow. Mine is one year old, I don’t feel like having them in my home. I have dogs, but I do have a 10 year parts and labor warranty. I used to do installs 20 yrs ago. So I know my way around. Plus it’s leaking badly and idk how long it would take them. But I know this is my problem. T-trap!
Good luck on it. let us know how it worked out.
It’s time for me to try to clean my pipes. Learn something new every day without spending hundreds of dollars. Thank you I learn a lot today.
Glad my video helped. Thanks.
Yes, today, Jonah, I fixed this issue. My situation (now that I have direct hands-on with it) is where the condensation drain dropped from attic down to a bathroom sink. Well, the drain that came to the sink got really stopped up. There was so much crap in the last foot / 18 inches. It is a vertical drop down then comes out at me for 18 inches then rights for 10 inches into the sink's drain line. Well, I think that entire span there (say 2 feet) was clogged with greasy, dirt-like clog. So, if I didn't buy the tool you suggested and cut the pipe, I would have never got it all figured out. But, now, it is PERFECTLY CLEAN. You wouldn't believe it. Looks brand new. We even cleaned everything within the sink trap too. I knew to do that, but I didn't know what the other attaching line was doing. But, now, I understand, and it is actually so simple. I never knew to worry about the clogging of those. Now, I plan to clean the other attic A/C lines for the downstairs A/C.
Awesome. Thanks for letting our viewers know.
Excellent video! Thank you so much!! The T-trap is wonderful!! Bless you for sharing your expertise.
Thank you and thanks for watching.
Thank you soooo much for this, its very helpful... it really pays off to be self sufficient!
You are welcome. So glad the video helped.
Thanks for this video! I had the same issue and was able to fix it w/o paying a cent. The p trap had not been glued on mine so I pulled it out and cleaned away the gunk (still can’t believe how much was in there). You may have mentioned this but it’s important to note this type of clog prevents the cutoff switch from doing its job
glad my video helped dylan. and thanks for the info about the switch because i didn't know that. now all my viewers will know now. thank you
Clear and easy to understand. Thank you.
Thank you!! You saved me lot. Some are definitely going to suggest to replace the unit to make money!!
Awesome! Glad I could help out. Yes the company wants to make money.
I love this guys accent. It sound like you would kick someones a$$ for lying to you about fixing your AC. :) GREAT step by Steps! You saved me $$$$!!!!
+Cor Nel Thank you. Yes i was very disappointed that guy didn't even mention the leak was from a possible clogged drain pipe. He just wanted to sell me a new AC system. I never called him again and will never recommend him. Yes i definitely saved money.
House we're renting has a pipe through the wall that drips into the flower bed...so no sewer connection here! This video was a god send thank you so much and so easy to perform 2 thumbs up sir! ❤
Thank you Robert, but don't forget to watch part 2 & 3 because I did some changes to it.
Thank you So much!! i had the same problem and you video helped figure out what caused and i fixed it myself following your instructions!!!
I really really appreciate you man. Thank you for the video.
It helped me indeed in my current situation. Thanks a lot.
You're most welcome. Thank you for watching.
Great video! You are a good teacher.

I gotta admit the T-trap you made was a great idea.
Glad my video helped. Yeah a can't believe they don't make P-traps for with a cleanout.
Thanks! You saved us some money!
So glad my video helped.
Awesome vid bud great job

Great video!! thank you for helping me save money..
No problem 👍. I know I saved myself some money too.
Very helpful. Thank you!
You're welcome!
Thanks for the information
Thank you, it was very helpful.
+L Vazquez Thank you. Glad it helped you out.
Thanks for this video! I had a similar issue but a pretty different set up (air handler in the attic). The drip pan beneath had filled up to the level of the trip/sensor (whatever it's called) so it shut down the condenser unit. i.e. air was still blowing but it wasn't cool. Cut out and replaced the P-trap, did the vinegar thing etc. Worked like a charm after that and it was a simple fix.
I will say this though, my P-trap had some gunk in it, but it really wasn't completely clogged up. So maybe there was more blockage in the next 90-degree joint that the vinegar washed out(?). Either way, it's working like a champ now with no dripping at all, so thanks again!
So glad it helped you out. You're welcome.
I'll tell you what - I'm so sick of HVAC guys lying all the time. Of all the HVAC personnel I've had in my house over the years, I'd say half of them lied to me about something. This is why you need to do work on your own and learn as much as you can as a homeowner. Some of the work will, undoubtedly, need to be done by a professional. But many of the regular maintenance and wear-and-tear problems can be handled by the homeowner, and it avoids all the lies that are told by greedy HVAC people. The a/c drainage/condensate line, for example, is an easy project that any homeowner can handle. Simple physics. You don't even need any tools to measure air pressure. You just dig in and get it done. Thank GOD for UA-cam.
Amen to that Robin.
I hope I can fix mine this way....
My water drain looks nothing like that....
Nice video i ever seen 👏👍👊
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!!! Saved us soooooo much money. $3.00 fix. (Had tools already)
Great video!
Thank you.
video helped me and now its not leaking thank you
Glad it helped. Thanks for sharing.
This video just saved me an easy 100
You might have helped my situation now to buy the stuff!!
Glad my video can help. Hope it works out for you.
Thank you very much, I had the same problem now is fixed.
Glad it helped out Arturo.
Thank you for the video. The ac is leaking through the roof into my room and we've had the ac off for about two weeks now and it's so freaking hot and we can't afford bringing someone out
Glad my video can help you out.
Thank you so much sir
Nice info
A much easier fix is to use a shop vac and suck out the line. Attach the shop vac hose to where you added the vinegar in your video. Takes all of 3 minutes to complete the process.
Yes i think you're right. I hope the viewers will have a chance to read your idea. Thank you
I know this won't mean much to you but this whole process started happening on my basement floor just days before I closed on selling my house. I found this video and to my surprise my furnace is the EXACT same model so I was going to follow this step by step and I found your comment and tried it instead and it worked perfectly! No need to cut anything, no need to unscrew or turn off the water, all I had to do was lift the PVC out of the pump that we use to get the water to the sewer and shop vac the whole thing, worked perfectly! Thank you so much you made my month!
In my unit the P trap was so clogged with stuff that even a shop vac would not pull the gunk out. Had to replace the P trap
Thank you! That worked!
This worked for me, glad I read your response!
I think you need cap the vertical stubs. That's what ac guy noticed on my unit when I bought house and could tell problems with not draining
thank you
Thank you SO much for this advice! Just fixed mine at little cost!
Glad it helped you out. You are welcome. Check out part 2 and part 3 video to really fix the problem.
Thank you!
You're very welcome
Thankyou!
You are welcome Mark. Glad it helped you out.
It's double trapped .. Never double trap because it creates a cushion of air that prevents the water from leaving the first trap. Also plbg code.
This happened to me just this morning. I could hear water dripping onto the floor inside my a/c closet.
On checking the drain pan of the inside handler, it had some gunk in the drain channel which was impeding water flow. I merely took some paper towels to scrape up and remove the gunk. I then poured water into the pan and watched it now drain properly.
To kill any mold or mildew, I poured a cup full of bleach into the access port of the drain piping (right before the P-trap), followed by more water after 5 minutes. All is now OK.
Btw, the reason for having a P-trap in the condensate drain pipework is to hold a small amount of water (about 2" is sufficient) to prevent air from being sucked back UP into the air handler.
Thanks for sharing
Thankis for a great video.... I think that I can do this... My air conditioner is leaking like crazy!
+vj212442 I know you can do it. I'm glad it helped you out. Good luck.
+Dj Jonah DIY Don't forget to watch part 2 of the video because HVAC experts suggest to keeping the old J trap, but i did something a little different and works much better.
good job
Thank you! Don't forget to watch part 2 of the video. I make a better & improved Ptrap, Cheers!
good video
Thank you Yathu.
Thank You!!!!
You're welcome.
Very helpfull thanks
Glad it helped you out David. You're welcome.
Don't forget to check the Part2 of the video.
Took the top off the pipe. Damn geyser of water. Had the vac ready and hopefully should be good to go.
@@chipheuston4064 don’t forget to look at the video part 2 & 3. It shows how to make a diy p trap.
you do need a p-trap o the drain line to create negative pressure on the line. Its like the mouthful of water you always have to take when you start a siphon with a hose.
RangerCaptain11A yeah, you are right. Stay tuned for part 2 of the video.
JONAH VLOGS & DIY
thanks for your help i just save some 💰
Glad it helped you out Zoe.
+Jonah's DIY & More I see you made this a year ago but hopefully I could get a suggestion from you. I have a an old unit and recently the unit stopped working. we could tap the outdoor unit and the fan in the top of the covering would come on and the unit would start working again... Of course we were actually wiring a relay switch on the defrost board. that work for about a year. heat in the winter has been fine no problem. air conditioning man just charged me almost $700 this summer to replace that board... It's crazy how much it costs to get an AC repair done. the board was well under $100. That said it has been working fine for about 2 weeks. I just came down the hallway where the inside portion is in a hall closet. a puddle of clean clear water is in my floor. All the pipes from everywhere in the house run through this closet but only I have been here today and none of the plumbing has been used upstairs at all. however about noon it felt too hot so I bumped the thermostat down from 74 degrees to 69. and I'm wondering if I just have a freeze up a clogged pipe. I can't tell if it's still leaking right now. but there is water inside the closet floor just like you show in this video. how would I determine weather my pipe is leaking or whether the coils froze up or something like that and then condensed into the floor.
when the repairman was here two or three weeks ago he checked the freon pressure or whatever they do with that gauge both times and said it was perfect.
my first thoughts are to put the thermostat back in the 70s and clean up the water and see if I get more. am I on track or should I not risk it and go ahead and call the expensive repair man again?
If you have that same old designed P-Trap, it is most likely a clogged pipe. Your A coil is freezing up because water and air cannot escape where its designed to escape. Check out my part 2 video. Hope it can help you out.
+Jonah's DIY & More thanks ... you were exactly correct. your video was correct.
Thanks! I have a line going into a PVC pipe and the water is bubbling up. I’ll check for clogs!
Good luck. hope my video will help out.
Hey I have a lil ac unit inside my room window and the ac leaks water on my room floor can you please give me details how to fix it
Great vid if I'm learning to be a French Canadian plumber. JK. Thanks for the post.
was the home cooling properly?
The p trap is there for 2 reason 1. To stop the unit from sucking in air which will cause water to splash around inside and possibly being "thrown" inside the duct by the blower motor2. To catch debri.I wouldn't ever recommend anyone to just remove the ptrap because it serves a purpose that's why we install them. A unit without a trap is installed incorrectly although it willwork there is a chance of air and water being sucked back in the unit
You are right Moe. That's why i made another video part 2 with a different type of P trap. Thanks for the comment. It will help out my viewers.
We are having a hard to fix leak problem as well. It started about 20 days ago and sounded like a pop with releasing pressure and water every where. First thought was the refrigerant but that was fine. The AC guy found a small split before the pee trap and determined it was sucking air and water back into the unit so he fixed the plumbing and took out the pee trap. We let it dry for a day and turned it back on and it was leaking so they came back out and put in a pee trap. It was still leaking and they installed a scoop Friday (I have no idea what that is). It's Monday and it is still leaking about a drop ever few minutes and it looks like it is leaking from inside the unit having nothing to do with the drainage. One thing to keep in mind is that we collect the condensate water to use in our aquariums and through this entire ordeal it always provided about the same amount of water. The ac works great in all other aspects.
im dying laughing. you funny as hell.
Dishwasher: that made me think that person is an AC Worker who constructs this time
The solution sounded right; I tried it; it worked, but the
screw/cap at the bottom was leaking and I could not stop it using screw. I used the solution without derange.
Farideh Majidi i
i had the same problem .. snaked the line ... pump stareted pumping right away .. pored a 2lt bottle of water in the line and pumping like normal!
Thanks for sharing Rick.
Did you have to replace the elbow from the unit also? I’m just curious because when you cut off the P-trap it would have cut that nub hanging out of the elbow you have on the unit
I ended up making DIY my own Ptrap. Check out this link.
ua-cam.com/video/dtiQjgrmed8/v-deo.html
So I clean all the tunes and change de trap and while my furnace is completely off is still leaking water????
I think there might be is a clog somewhere else, or The ice build up in the A Fram coil is still defrosting and dripping water, or evaporator coil is super dirty. Just my opinion. Sorry you may have to check out other UA-cam videos about that.
On inplix page are instructions if you want to learn how to build it yourself just take them
Nice to me!
What is the plug for on the left side? Is that for overflow or what?
At 3:15 min just temporary so I could clean out the rest of the pipe with vinegar .
My Goodman attic horizontal Air Handler is leaking into the Secondary Pan. I popped the service panel off last week and the internal Pan is dry. Its like no water is making it to the primary panel to drain into the guest bathroom sink outlet downstairs. I checked both the secondary and primary lines and they are both clear.
The water seems to be leaking towards the back panel where the duct comes out, where the rear panel meets the main box. I wonder if a seal, gasket or something else failed and now its just leaking like a sieve.
I tried to patch with a 1/2 gallon of mastic and a full roll of peel and seal on that back panel and onto the main panel hoping to make a seal so the water would run into the primary pan inside.. But like water is apt to do, its found multiple ways out and i'm back to leaking again.
I'm open to suggestions. I havent had the rear panel off to take a look at the coils. Maybe there's a problem there.
I'm desperate and its 100+ in Dallas these days.
Shane Kelly. I had something similar. I put a level on the air handler and it was flat level. It should be tilted slightly to the primary drain. I shimmed the unit to half bubble. Water poured out. Problem solved.
Thanks for the reply. I tried that as well but the unit is tilted properly and my internal pan is actually molded with a bit of a lean already too. This week i emptied 2 bottles of clear silicone from the back after removing the rear panel and from the inside trying to seal up any crack or hole i could find. I could take the internal pan out and the A coil i guess but at that point i may just replace the darn unit. I turned her on last night so i'll see tonight how bad the leak is. Even if its a slow leak i'm ok with that. I'll let you know.
thank you!!
You're welcome Chuck. Please the last video (part 3) if you want to make a Ptrap with a clean out.
Also, do you have time for a question? I hope so. Get this. Okay, I did what you said and cleaned everything and now that A/C is draining perfectly. Can you explain this or AGREE / DISAGREE on this question. I think my upper floor is cooling better. I mean tonight we set it on 73" and it gets 73" and feels cooler. Both wife and I thought same. Do you think that inproper draining could have been keeping it running more and not cooling as well. Now, a higher temp makes it seem cooler. I actually got cold, and I never do that. Any ideas? Or can you point to an article that would explain that? I wouldn't know where to look. Thanks. Subbed to your channel.
Yes improper draining does stop proper cooling of the house. In my case, not enough cool air was coming into the house because my A Frame evaporator coil coil keep freezing up due to improper draining. A professional HVAC lied to me and said I needed a new AC unit outside just to make a sale. I was not happy about that. But please watch my video part 3 because it shows you how to make your own P-trap with a clean out so you clean it every year & it never clogs again. Thanks for sharing your story with our viewers.
Just vacuum the line and put it back together with a coupling. you don't have to put a new trap
This video is hilarious
How
Can you tell me which drain pipe goes to the outside? Would it be going into a silver foil wall then to the outside? Thank you! ❤️
This drain would go out. In my case it goes behind the furnace & into the sewer drain.
Thank you so much ❤
I had poured a quart of water down that pipe and it didn't come out of the outside drain out. I'm assuming there's a clog somewhere in that pipe 😕
👍👍👍👍👍
if you have low freon the inside unit will freeze up and you will know it.
No need to have the P trap there?
I tried using my central air today for the first time in two years and had a problem with water leaking. Is it more likely a freon issue or a pipe clog? I've had my house for 8 years and have never had the ac unit serviced.
DowntownCanon I would try to see if its clogged first. if it's not clogged, call for service for freon since it may be low.
DowntownCanon -- How cold is the air blowing through? If it is ice cold, probably not a freon issue
my heating unit is leaking blow the drip pan and into the floor and has ruined m carpet and walls any ideas how to stop this problem
+Kellie Collins Do you mean your AC drip pan is overflowing and leaking? Check the drain hole and pipe from your drip pan...since it may be clogged. Also check if your air filter is clogged.
Hi, how does this work if the tube is cleaned but the drain I think is clogged how do I work with that?
use a drain snake
A drain snake will not work that is horrible advice. You should either call and ac professional or buy the tool that blows out the line with compressed air. Snaking the drain will only cause more problems.
If you are still have an issue, check you condensation pump, if applicable.
P traps are designed to keep outside sewer gas from entering into your dwelling. You might want to rethink your design.
You're right. if you watch part 2 & 3 of this video it will explain what I did.
put a union where you cut it so you can take it apart easily next time.
