- Final Project for Temple University's Broadcast Documentary Class. I would like to thank all residents of Richard Allen who took the time to be interviewed and share your experiences!
I lived in Richard Allen Homes from 1944 to 1964. I went to spring garden School from kindergarten to the 6th grade. I have so many fond memories that I will never forget.
What street are they on
@@MRB1199 10th and Brown
@NorthPhilly no I didn't. Bill Cosby lived on 9th Street and I lived on 12th Street. So if we didn't go to school together I more than likely would not have known you. Wanya is much younger than I am and Cosby was a little older than me.
Great Video, Im from Philly and you depicted this section well. That big dude eating the platter in the backround at the beginning was historical!
Thanks love our Philly stories
I was raised in "The Original" Richard Allen , it definitely didn't look like that. 812 A Jessup Place will forever be in my heart.
Hey you do a remix of this video, and add the real story . Of how and why Richard Allen was able to get revitalized. And the real heros who fought hard to make that happen.. like The Late 1Richard Tennant Council director Ms Carrie Turner. ( (1980-1994) and of the West popular Nac office . She also has the park named after her on 13th popular st. She the one who Changed Richard Allen Neighborhood. Her mural is also located in Richard Allen at 9th Brown st.
I wasn’t from down there but I used to be down there. Boy, it’s definitely some stories to be told.
Man I grew up in Frankford, you literally had to know somebody to chill at RA.
I used to live in Richard Allen back in the day from 1984 - 1993. Best years of my life. I miss the how it looked back then opposed to know. It's beautiful today, but there's so much unfilled open space. I didn't personally know anyone from RAM squad, but was there when they were blowin up.
Warren Burgess where u lived at down richard allen
Now that was the best of the best

Bravo, Kadida! I love it. It's very urban, very informative. And you talked to a great deal of people with different experiences. I feel informed. :)

"my husband wasn't into providing"
Classic
thats called a bum
That was the dumbest shit I heard smh
She didn't want to put him out there like that. He was probably on drugs and she didn't want to say that.
I used to live in Philly....What happened to the Richard Allen highrises?
They demolished them. Blumbers. Eats falls. Tasker Morris. The only ones still standing is Beirut and The ones on 43rd and market
Tore them down years ago...like 20
The high rises where actually a different project called "cambridge plaza". Poplar st separate the two projects. When you got to know the area well you found it they are two different sets of people with their own community in mind.
Mikael S600 Lol! I know that they were considered to be “Cambridge.” Still, most people outside of that complex referenced them colloquially as Richard Allen.
I used to try to use the name “Cambridge” to refer to the buildings, and nobody knew what I was talking about, until I mentioned the geographical area. At that point, people would say, “You mean the Richard Allen buildings?!?” 😁😁😁😁😁😁 So, when in Rome, you do as the Romans, I guess. 🤪🤪
What makes me mad at these municipalities are the fact that all project complexes are named after Black people or Hispanics...as if they only associate our leaders with poverty and housing projects. LA has the Cezar Chavez Housing Projects, Chicago has the Mahalia Jackson Homes, and the Lou Rawls Pavilion, MLK Housing Projects in NYC, and Richard Allen in North Philly. In North Philly, they also had the Marcus Garvey Welfare Place too. That shit is too much!!!
That’s also a slap in the face to all of us people of color! Why would they honor Black and Hispanic leaders in this way? Next thing you know, they’ll put Malcolm X’s face on a book of food stamps for Black History Month!!!
State Champ Is Fairhill still standing?
That old lady was gahgit from True 2 da game book!! lol
hassheat wow that's who they based the book on
I live on 7th an Popular st currently for the pass 50 years.
They can change the projects to houses put you can't change the people
I worked in housing; NYC. Totally agree 💯. God Bless. ♥️
It's division in every level... crazy being poor isn't a crime
I was raised and Richard Allen projects at 1107 apartment b parish place from 1971 to 2012
Akie is that you boy? This is Willow. Sisters were Sarah, Linda, Francics, Margaret and Ethel. 812 a Alder Place. 1958 - 1969
This is the new Richard Allen. Where is the footage of the Highrise?
The high rises where actually a separate project to the north called "cambridge plaza". One block separated cambridge and Richard Allen "popular st" . They were close but 2 different sets.
They were called the "4 story buildings".
I’m from Cali but I heard it’s dangerous af over there cuz
What part of Cali
The one that said she lived in the project for 53 years, she was 3 when she moved there needs to be ashamed. You mean to tell me she couldn’t do better in all those years, smh
.......my peoples survive ...survive the struggle and proceed to success ...for the future of o.u.r children .........peace!!

Live in Philly. My mom is from jersey and I am so thankful that even though she struggled as a single parent she never moves to projects and let s live in areas like this. The projects is not a permanent solutions and you should never get comfortable off of the government. It’s will come back on you. Your goal should be to eventually own something that belongs to you not get comfortable off of the government. Bill Cosby was right. The audacity of these ppl thinking they have the right to complains about moving smh. Disgusting. You shouldn’t never be embarrassed to have lived in it, but you should be embarrassed to stay there. Idc. Stop the foolishness black ppl. I’m so glad my mom never lived in places like this even though she struggled. Nothing but bad parents with no hope living in the projects.
It's not where you live it's how you live. For the most part, all parents want better and have dreams and aspirations for themselves and their children.
On one hand you say, you shouldn't be embarrassed to live/have lived in public housing and then you make disparaging statements about the parents who live there. Kudos to your mother Sis, but you made a terribly awful generalization about other's parents simply based on where they reside.😕
Marie facts
Not true of all parents.
I friended you on FB. Add me to the group's page...
1111 West Popular Street I Lived There When Ram Squad Ran Shit Its 100 x Better Now
Sad
see they find anyway to separate black ppl. yall using homes now. Damn smh
I was thinking the same thing. The single home people seem to have a mentality like they are better. Crazy right lol
