- A different recording from the more commonly-reissued album track, this was the follow-up single release to the group’s other #2 hit “Born To Be Wild”
Pop Chart Peaks: Cash Box 2, Billboard & Record World 3
The 45rpm single was issued on Dunhill-ABC 4161 - Magic Carpet Ride (Kay-Moreve) by Steppenwolf, produced by Gabriel Mekler
. THE 1968 HITS ARCHIVE - Here in one place, a comprehensive collection of ‘pop’ best-sellers and songs which made an impact that were either released or enjoyed a major chunk of their popularity within the calendar year 1968 (some were recorded in 1967)
Nice to hear this one without the obnoxiously dragged out ending.
@@JukeboxJoeB that random blank stretch of the song with the guitar solo towards the end, that like stated, drags on obnoxiously long
I was lucky enough as a 7 year old in 1968 to have siblings in their teens. They heavily influenced my music tastes as a small child by listening to their favorite records and radio stations. I have a brother who was into the Beatles , Steppenwolf ,CCR and The Doors
Same with me when I was a kid back in the late 60s/early 70s. I had older brothers who influenced my musical tastes.
oh...........😊
Only version I listen to. Love the alternate vocal!
My favorite version. Agreed 👍
@@haroldfridkis9235 Neat, there are two of us!
Three
You mean the original
The recording (i.e. instrumental backing) is same as the LP version, BUT . . . the vocal track is different, as well as edited like you-know-what. Much prefer this 45 mono mix, hands-down.
Alas, this, like so many mono mixes on the ABC-Paramount / ABC and Dunhill labels (and whatever else ABC handled) were chucked in the dumpster by label management. Grrr . . .
Always thought it was completely different recording, the organ being much louder. I guess it's the mix. Do wish the LP version was like this one. It's like they cleaned it up.
Brilliant version 👍🏻💯
I remember this version from when I was little.
this version is SO much better then the LP, this is the version that was all over AM top 40 radio and has such a better "Ballsier" sound to it
CANNOT relate how Big this was for the development of ' hard rock ' - '68 onward! (it was the same 'shock & awe' that had come with Hendrix, and one year later, with the arrival of Led Zep!)😮
Izzy loves cool rock music 🎸 🎶 💘 Enjoy 1968.
THIS SONG FUCKING RULES

They never played this version on the oldies station, it’s not much different, it’s just when he says “You don’t Know”
Listen carefully and you'll notice the last chorus is a copy/paste of the first chorus. Totally worth repeating though, because John Kay is legend.
The Live Steppenwolf album is awesome.
I only know this version.
Lyrics:
I like to dream, yes, yes, right between my sound machine
On a cloud of sound I drift in the night
Any place it goes is right
Goes far, flies near, to the stars away from here
Well, you don’t know what we can find
Why don’t you come with me little girl
On a magic carpet ride
You don’t know what we can see
Why don’t you tell your dreams to me
Fantasy will set you free
Close your eyes girl
Look inside girl
Let the sound take you away
Last night I held Aladdin’s lamp
And so I wished that I could stay
Before the thing could answer me
Well, someone came and took the lamp away
I looked around, a lousy candle’s all I found
Well, you don’t know what we can find
Why don’t you come with me little girl
On a magic carpet ride
Well, you don’t know what we can see
Why don’t you tell your dreams to me
Fantasy will set you free
Close your eyes girl
Look inside girl
Let the sound take you away
You don’t know what we can find
Why don’t you come with me little girl
On a magic carpet ride
You don’t know what we can see
Why don’t you tell your dreams to me……
Anyone hear a bit of a Bo Diddley beat here?
call of duty cold war vibes
The vocals are too different to the original unfortunately. It means the long outro is unfortunately the only version that’s any good.
What do you mean? Isn't this version the original hit?
@@JukeboxJoeB I wouldn’t have written that if it were. Just listen to them both.
@@latenightlogic yeah when I think of this song I think of the album version. This is what I have on vinyl though as I don't wanna buy the whole album when I can get a 45 with this and born to be wild. This version is starting to grow on me though.
i like the album version but this will do from time to time.
