  • Original ABC Dunhill Records #4161
    Debut 10/5/1968 and peaked at #3 for ONE week on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart.
    This is the original SHORT version with the original hit version lead vocal found only on the 45 RPM vinyl record.
    All stereo versions include a different take of the lead vocal.
    ABC Dunhhill records in the mid 1970's - in order to save storage space, destroyed all the mono masters, and original multitrack recordings, including this record. So the only way to hear the original is from the original 45 RPM record - like this one!
    This info is courtesy of Wikipedia:
    "The single version differs noticeably from the album version with a different vocal take by Kay used for the first verse of the song and differing instrumental balances. The single version is also much shorter than the album version, with a running time of 2 minutes and 55 seconds (the album version is 4 minutes and 25 seconds long)."
    This is the version played on the radio that made this a hit!

    Probably one of the worst business decisions ever made in the history of the entertainment industry was when the suits at ABC/Dunhill had the original studio master tapes tossed into the garbage to save money on storage costs in the early 70's. That means Steppenwolf, Three Dog Night, The Grassroots, Mamas and the Papas original masters are gone for good. This is the version that everyone heard on AM radio back in the day. The album version is lifeless compared to this. Note the lyrics "Flies far, goes near" lyrics are not on the album version.

      Nor is "I love to Dre-AMM"(notes caps,please)"Yeah, Yeah, Yeah"(note third yeah,again, not on the LP, only on single.I have the single from 10/5/68, with the REAL version!)

      ***** April Fools..yeah.. This is NO edit (as DGolus has said) and is most likely on the single recorded as was, not even from the mono recording edited, making the LP stereo version the longer one that just immediately for reissues and radio got edited. This was just rerecorded or recorded before the "Steppenwolf the Second" L:P at the length on disc, 2:55. (Just like I read that the Doors were asked to do on Elektra in 1967 for "Light My Fire"'s mono single before editing the mono LP tape..:))

      I prefer the way he sings 'I like to dream' at the start of this song more than the other versions. When he goes a little higher on the word 'dream' it gives the song more of a kick start.

    * Magic Carpet Ride (1968)
    Sung by Steppenwolf
    ♩♪ ♬ (Instrumental) ♩♪ ♬
    I like to dream
    Yes, yes, right between my sound machine
    On a cloud of sound I drift in the night
    Any place it goes is right
    Goes far, flies near, to the stars away from here
    Well, you don't know what we can find
    Why don't you come with me little girl
    On a magic carpet ride
    You don't know what we can see
    Why don't you tell your dreams to me
    Fantasy will set you free
    Close your eyes girl
    Look inside girl
    Let the sound take you away
    Last night I held Aladdin's lamp
    And so I wished that I could stay
    Before the thing could answer me
    Well, someone came and took the lamp away
    I looked around, a lousy candle's all I found

      +Steve Pell Yeah!Neat.. I have this as well. I believe that this was just a short recording just for the single as mentioned without being a separate longer recording edited, as WAS the case for Three Dog Night and some other Dunhill artists. Apparently both Magic Carpet RIde and Born to be Wild in their specific single takes/recordings were not even previously longer in those but just as recorded (like Tommy James/Shondell's Crimson and Clover over on Roulette, which wound up being a sister reissue with the Dunhill acts on ABC/Dunhill's Goldies series of the 1970s)

    ~ The original black label Dunhill mono record (here) inspired Madonna's hit Ray Of Light 1997-1998. A record's length in the sixties often determined whether it would get played on the radio. The longer (L.P.) versions were trimmed for a single release. Iron Butterfly, Chambers Brothers, Wilson Pickett, Steppenwolf, the Doors. Many times stereo recordings were not original recordings but remixed from mono, and sound awful. The single versions are the ones everyone remembers from the radio obviously. What sounds best is like what is right here: the original single versions in mono - thank you. Cheers, DAVEDJ ~

  • @reggie44
    @reggie44 11 років тому +4

    Not only did ABC toss their own mono masters and multi-track tapes, but also when they bought Dot/Paramount, most of those went in the trash. Not just the obscure stuff, but also the hits. First-generation tapes, with production notes and info. When MCA bought ABC, there was another round of 'housecleaning'. This was common practice in the music business.
    There were some early recordings by many famous artists that will never be heard again.

    You CAN get this on I-Tunes and on CD. (Released 2015) If the original masters of the MONO singles were destroyed, then I'm curious as to the source material used for the release of the ABC-Dunhill Singles Collection. In listening to Magic Carpet Ride, the quality is not too good.

    This 45 is a completely different recording from the LP version. Many early Steppenwolf singles were different recordings from their album version. Same for Three Dog Night - also a Dunhill Records artist. It is not the LP version shortened, and re-mixed. The hot version of this Magic Carpet Ride video can only be found on an original, black label Dunhill 45, as seen here. ABC/MCA greatest hits re-issue 45s from the 1970s-80s feature the LP version edited down in length. Don't buy any of them, you will be disappointed. Seek the original 45 for all Steppenwolf or Three Dog Night singles.

    • @SteveCarras
      @SteveCarras 9 років тому +2

      Complete true..I have the single depicted above (original black Dunhill ABC label) and the original "Born to be Wild"(same letter) and most of my Three Dog Night singles ("One","Mama Told Me (Not To Come)","Liar","Old Fashioned Love Song") are the ORIGINAL releases (and on the same label Grassroots's "Sooner or Later").

    This take so much better and completely different from the album and CD versions. However, it is included in the now out of print Dick Bartley Presents On The Radio CD series (which most probably transferred it from the original vinyl 45, since the ABC/Dunhill master was lost).

    This is the authentic 45 version of this song. The reissued version on MCA has a shortened stereo version of the LP cut, which is a different mix.

    • @DGolus
      @DGolus 9 років тому

      Its not a different mix. Its a completely separate recording. Both Steppenwolf and Three Dog Night, often did separate recordings for singles and albums.

    • @SteveCarras
      @SteveCarras 9 років тому

      DGolus Their label also was a major factor, Dunhill Records. It's interesting. At the same time, Columbia Records artists The Chambers Brothers had a major hit with "The Time Has Come Today", itself a remake of a 1966 recording, and that 1968 single was in different edits and the album version remake longer. The 1966 original of Time has Come was a shorter different recording, same for two DIFFERENT album versions on Sussex of Wadsworth Mansion's Sweet Mary, and THAT single had two singles----a faded and slightly longer cold ending, and this was BEFORE the LP. You'll notice at least ONE of the Columbia Blood Sweat, and Tears 1969 top ten trilogy, the only one written by lead David Clayton-Thomas, "Spinning Wheel" is at least in PART a different vocal as well (and maybe the first of the other three, "You've made me so Very Happy", though the only different in the final of those 1969 BS&T songs, "And When I Die", only differs in having the odd orchestral parts for the LP.)

    • @wmbrown6

      @@DGolus- The instrumental backing on this is the same, it's the *vocal take* that's different from the LP. Believe me, I've heard both.

    The opening vocal on this was slightly different and also better than the full length, psychedelic version. I heard that ABC/Dunhill did not save a lot of the mixed down masters that were made specifically for AM Top 40 radio. This is one of the lost ones (many Three Dog Nights as well, e.g., Liar).

  • @danielgolus4600
    @danielgolus4600 4 роки тому

    This is a different recording entirely of the song. It is NOT the LP version, shortened and remixed. This was an ABC/Dunhill practice. Both Steppenwolf and Three Dog Night, in particular, often recorded two different versions of a song intended for a single - one for the single (to be in mono), the other for the LP (to be in stereo). In all cases, IMO, the single versions are superior, in every way, to the LP counterpart.

  • @SEANFIR

    Hey, I'll also add that it seems like just as more and more ALBUM versions turn up, that more and more ARTISTS SEEM to prefer the ALBUM versions, thus THESE absences:
    All Eagles 45's
    David Bowie's REAL single of "Fame" (NOT the 4 minute long version)
    The ORIGINAL "Dream On" Aerosmith single (sorry, Steve and co., all due respect forthcoming, I don't remember "where it comes, where it goes, no body knows" crap (again,sorry) between verses in the original 1973 and 1975 single. Still enjoy the much longer LP version all the same.
