Im Sommer 1879 war Vieuxtemps nach zwei Schlaganfällen gesundheitlich sehr angeschlagen. Er beschloss, in ein Sanatorium in Mustapha Supérieur (einem Vorort von Algier) umzuziehen, das sein Schwiegersohn Eduard Landowski leitete. In einem Brief an die polnische Geigerin Jadwiga Bulewska vom 19. Oktober 1880 schreibt Vieuxtemps: „Ich bin bei ausgezeichneter Gesundheit und habe mich in den letzten sechs Monaten fast vollständig erholt. Außerdem habe ich noch nie mit so viel Eifer und so fruchtbar gearbeitet, nicht einmal in meiner frühesten Jugend. Urteilen Sie selbst, ich habe soeben ein Cellokonzert vollendet, das nach allgemeiner Meinung sehr schön ist ... Ich habe auch zwei Violinkonzerte komponiert, mein Sechstes und mein Siebtes, die ich in Konzeption, Stil und Schule allen meinen anderen vorziehe.“ Das Violinkonzert Nr. 6 widmete er der Geigerin Wilma Norman-Neruda, die ihn auch während seines Aufenthalts in Mustapha besuchte.
In the summer of 1879, Vieuxtemps was in very poor health following two strokes. He decided to move to a sanatorium in Mustapha Supérieur (a suburb of Algiers), which was run by his son-in-law Eduard Landowski. In a letter to the Polish violinist Jadwiga Bulewska, dated October 19, 1880, Vieuxtemps wrote, "I am in excellent health and have almost completely recovered during the past six months. Moreover, I have never worked with so much ardour and so fruitfully, even in my earliest youth. Judge for yourself, I have just completed a cello concerto which all agree is very beautiful ... I have just composed two concertos for violin, my Sixth and Seventh, which I consider superior to all my others in conception, style and school." He dedicated the Violin Concerto No. 6 to the violinist Wilma Norman-Neruda, who also visited him during his stay in Mustapha.
