Thanks Kate for being so transparent about the process.
Note to all- never ask about salary/wage of any job until you are actually offered the job, at which time they usually present the salary in the job offer anyway and can negotiate from there. Never bring it up in any interview for any job anywhere. Been in my career almost 30 years, that's just one no-no to avoid during the actual interviews.

I was thinking that they must be hiring within, too. They usually have those job postings up for a while but they're only available to employees before the general public gets to see them. And yes! That internal networking can be very frustrating for honest and hardworking people because it can be such a disadvantage if they don't have those connections.
Either way, I'm very sorry you didn't get the position! Please don't give up; the more you put yourself out there and network, the better chance you'll have to finally get your foot in the door. You work super hard and these videos about your journey are amazing. Best wishes to you!

As a former coder (CCS) also went on to get to get my RHIT AND then later my bachelor’s degree and certification as an RHIA. I went unconventionally and started in a nursing home before I finished my coding course. That gave me a foot up into a hospital as a coder, then my other degrees helped me to get jobs as a HIM manager, work as an auditor for other coders, taught coding and helped to write textbooks. One thing I told my students was to view this as a career not a job you could work at home while you watch the kids. With a certificate and living in small town it will difficult to get a good paying job if there is only one hospital in town. You can probably find a job in a physicians office but not at a great pay scale. For a career and not a job a person often has to move to a less desirable place away from family for a few years to get that experience. All this should be taken into account before deciding on getting a certificate. Good luck everyone

This is what I am finding out too. I have my CPC-A and haven't been able to get even an interview. I am still finishing up school and then I will be sitting for my CCS (and hopefully pass) But from what I am seeing, even with a CCS it is all who you know. I wish I would have known that before!

I really appreciate you being so open about the process, however frustrating it has been. I’m currently still stuck in the same dilemma with health administration. I’m a patient care tech/front office asst in a retail clinic with a masters degree in health admin and I really want to become a coder but it seems like the same type of struggle. The online AHIMA program seems quite pricey though and I was hoping that by becoming certified it would mean that I’d be much more likely to land a job sooner than later but I can tell it’s pretty much like any other healthcare job-they want experience or they want you to know someone. Which is so frustrating because you’re kind of taught all through life that if you just get an education you can get a job! Not always the case. *heavy sigh* please keep updating here if you can. It is very helpful to hear your side of things. Thanks!

One way that you could get experience is to do an internship. Email hospitals, clinics, small coding/billing businesses, or anything that does some kind of coding. I got my first coding job this way! You may not get paid while interning, but you’re gaining experience.
Also, billing is a good starting point. You get to learn the “other half” of coding. Understanding the insurance side and all their guidelines really helps with your coding!
Also, if you can, network with other coders in your area!
Good luck and don’t give up!

Coding with Kate: This is exactly what I’m going through now. I guess I was supposed to see this. I felt alone! I was looking into insurance billing and still nothing. I was at the point where I was looking at customer service jobs with an associates degree and a CCA certificate! I guess I’m going to have to start at the bottom and work my way up. I’m just going to keep earning my CEU’s and hopefully get noticed somewhere along the line. Thank you for sharing!

I saw someone comment on a different video , they got their first job via a temp agency. She commented she would pass test and interview process but turned down because she lacked coding experience. She decided to go through the temp agency and applied for medical coding jobs. Although, jobs are temporary you get to gain experience in all different settings.

Are you only looking at coding positions in your local area? You may need to look at hospital coding positions in a further distance in your state/near by states, especially rural areas. You might have to drive a distance (possibly more than an hour one way) to the hospital for your training but will likely be remote when your done. I would suggest this if it is a hospital based coding position and know you will be remote when your done with your training (how ever long it may be). After training and working remote, you may come to the hospital for meetings every now and then instead of having to drive 1-2 hours everyday. Even if a position isn't remote, I would rather drive far to gain the experience and then transfer to a hospital that will let me work remote. There are also contract coding companies out there but they typically require you to have experience.

    • @codingwithkate3792
      @codingwithkate3792  6 років тому

treat others the way you want to be treated that’s a good idea but it’s not worth the gas money to have a long commute, the hospitals that are outside my area are 3+ hours away (we have several large hospital networks that cover half the state including my city) and the Illinois border/Chicago is a 3-4 hour commute. It’s a great idea but my area in wisconsin is not ideal for commuting 😢

Also look to see if there are any coding positions in your nearby medical practices or doctor's offices..large medical practices are typically specialized (whether it's orthopedics, gastroenterology, urology, etc.). If I was in your position I would be looking to see if there are any positions at those hospitals that are 3+ hours away, if I only had to do the drive (or stay in a hotel) for my training and knew I was going remote right afterwards and periodically come in for meetings I definitely would do it..again, you could still transfer to a nearby hospital or wherever once you gain that experience..to each his own.

Landa Tarleton agreed, I also hear from my previous coworker that they hired someone who was still in school and didn’t even have a certification but only got the job because they knew/was friends with the supervisor. It’s like you can’t win no matter what you do, ugh!

How about doing a free internship at a doctor's office that uses your hospital for surgeries and tell them up front that you are just doing it for three months; ask all the questions and learn all you can while there. Ask for a good recommendation. That might be the connection you need. I will pray for you. You have helped me a lot.

I feel your pain, and you do seem like you know your shit than me girlie! Lol. I'm currently externing right now for a medical clerk, when I went to school for MBIC. I was frustrated, because this is already my third site where they don't want to train the MBIC, because of it being a "sensitive data." I totally understand that, but in the end, I went to school for MBIC and expect to get my 200 hours on MBIC. You mean to tell me, that they can't walk me step by step on doing it, and hawk eye it and make sure I'm doing it correctly, so that I can leave my extern with--not only the knowledge that I got from school, but also the experience as well!? So I'm sorta in a deep depression because of it and just going to try to work my way from the front to the back I guess. My school lied to me, and said that I'll get the experience on my extern and get to work in MBIC right away ....you can imagine how pissed I got. I went to UEI college which is a vocational school. Please spread the word and do not attend this school, because it's not just my place that this school is scamming people, but other sites as well.

I got the suggestion of pursuing billing to gain experience if you don’t have connections within the coding department. It’s frustrating but I do understand that billing deals with codes once they’ve been applied and correcting coding issues if the claim has been denied, etc. I just applied to 5 different billing positions at my current hospital so hopefully I’ll get something? I’ll make another video discussing this and hopefully I’ll have an update on those applications.

That's interesting that the supervisors have no idea what their people make financially. But that stinks that they wouldn't let everyone else know they aren't accepted. I applied for an entry level coder position though and didn't even make it through the first round for an interview so at least you did better than me.

I don’t agree with it’s who you know that will get you a coding position in my opinion. I still strongly say that you need to get your foot in the door because many jobs are offered to employees first and by law they have to post to the public as well. You already have your foot in the door and it takes time . Keep in mind there could also be other employees who have been there longer than you and have the same if not more qualifications as yourself . Many newly graduates from coding programs expect to be hired within a yr or less . Unfortunately that is not the case for most . Just hang in there .. u already have your foot in the door and I believe you will eventually get a coding position 🙂

Billing is dealing with insurance companies/ Medicare / Medicaid VS Tumor Registry positions you actually have to assign cancer codes to me that would be more beneficial for future coding jobs . Luke willis the CPC is more expensive and tests for the same level of coding as the CCA and I don’t believe it would be beneficial at all (at least in my area). What’s also disappointing is if the CCA is geared more towards a “health records credential”, then I wish they would have advertised it that way...
