After watching all the work and innovation required it’s very easy to imagine why reconditioned machines are so expensive and why it takes a skilled, conscientious technician to bring them back to relatively new condition. Thank you for an entertaining, educational experience. I look forward to the work you will do with this tool.
I am not a machinist, but I thoroughly enjoy watching you restore some of these old mechanical marvels that enabled us to go to the moon and even win WWII. Your work is a prime example of LOL (LABOR OF LOVE). i know that machine now has another 100 years of use for those who value pure human skills in the age of CNC and FUTURE AI.
I don't know jack about machining etc., but I have to say that I really enjoy watching your videos. It's great to see these old manual machines being put back to use. Looking forward to seeing more of your content.

If I’m ever on a plane that goes down in the middle of the jungle.. I really hope you are on it with me… there’s literally nothing you can’t do Kyle. 👍👍 Never fail to impress me man. Huge difference on the Lucas. Sounds so much better. Looking forward to seeing this one make some money and chomp out some projects !
I think you struck the balance for education and length. I like your videos because you discuss challenges and resolutions without being boring or pedantic.
For a relatively young fella, you do good work. Well done. Wonder how many people recognized the brake piston retracting tool. 73 yr old retired mechanic/machinist in Land Down Under.
I recently observed how metal filings were attracted to a crack in a tool housing, yes I know magnetism and dyes and particulate have been used to diagnose cracked casings for decades. Did you notice when you were drilling with the magnet base drill that the swarf was pulled out of the cut. Just a thought about application of magnets to capture metal debris from the bottom of the case you’re refurbishing . It’s such a difficult place to do bearings would it be an idea to retrofit a big magnet in the bottom of the case for bearings longevity ? Really like your work and channel.
Two things if you don't mind me saying. 1. On the vertical shafts for the small gear box, I would have cut a internal groove on the flange and installed a O ring to act as a secondary/backup seal so that cavity does not hold water or swarf. 2. I see that you had to make a sacrifice on your hand to the machinery gods. The gods always want blood. I love your content and always learn something when I see your video's!
Excellent improvements Kyle, better than new. Impressive that your were able to source the bearings, highly unlikely here in the UK for similar aged equipment. Well done Republic of the United States of America 🇺🇸. May i wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and safe 2025.
These awesome videos make the time fly when doing my rowing sessions! On full 5 gallon buckets if you spin the bucket so the hole is on the top, it's much easier to aim if that makes sense 😅

All that work remins me of pulling the gearbox from my K&T Autometric Model B (think horizontal jig bore). 500 pounds of gear box, took about 12 hours to get out with the 6 or 7 connections and having to tilt it fore and aft a couple times. Had to make a new coupler for the drive as the old one was broken, figured out why when i got it back together - the PO had deleted the main gasket. Things went back together nicely with a 1/64 paper gasket. Oh, yeah, all that work was because the PO had mistimed a gear and shifter. Took maybe 10 minutes to fix, total about 22 hours to pull and replace twice.
Probably a bit late now, but a suggestion for future reference; instead of fitting a close taper nipple with an elbow, fit a Street Elbow instead, does the same thing in a neater one fitting package. Have a great Christmas and New Year, looking forward to your next year's videos already. All the best from the UK 🇬🇧.
@@VanoverMachineAndRepair I'm surprised that it reduced by that much, especially as you drilled the drain holes wider. I'm in the process of putting two on my new to me lathe, when I change the headstock bearings. I'll check on the bore then. I have done it a couple of times on various machines and fit a female/female full flow ball valve with a plug, so that if the valve should vibrate open it cannot leak.
Have you seen the Dry ice cleaning machines that are available? Might be a good solution for refreshing the finish on old equipment. Unlike media blasting there’s no material or finish removal and seems to work on stains or surface debris etc..
It must be a Class One Hassle to work on this machine without the official documentation. How many more times are you going to discover 'later' that there was supposed to be an easy way to handle a task? Question: do you plan to do any inspection of the ways for the table? If you find excessive wear, are you going to be scraping them in? I have watched the process on Adam Boothe's and Keith Rucker's channels, it looks like an exacting process to measure correctly. Loving the series, and I request more long-format videos. So many creators assume that everyone wants short videos, and call their trade 'boring', but I am interested in the whole process, including the mundane bits, like cleaning for instance. Happy holidays!
Will you add a bellows style way cover over the vertical spinning shafts? I know OSHA would have a fit over those, but they do seem to be more hazardous than necessary anyway. Just curious. Nice work and keep it up.
Awesome watching you work! Curious about one thing. Could you not have cleaned up that seal service and just went with a different diameter seal? Also, would it be worth it to put some type of shield over those exposed seals? I'm totally impressed with your tenacity and skills!
Yeah I could probably go w different size. I did that one 2 of the 4 seams because I couldn’t source originals. But I went with original sizes when possible.
Hey Kyle, just fyi 3d prints are very porous so you might want to dip that cover in a clear lacquer or something if you're looking for it to keep water out! Nice video as always
yeah its more for oil being splashed occasionally. its not trying to be water tight per say. It's like waterproof vs water resistant. This is oil resistant.
You can get a 3/4” to 1” NPT bell reducer. With both ends being female the 3/4” would attach to the pipes coming from the Gear cases and the female checked hydraulic quick disconnect would attach to the bell reducer using a one inch all thread nipple. That way you could use your drain hose with no reduction in overall area on the drain hose. Just a thought. Overall you’re like I was, back when I was young. I’d rather do it myself. You do fine work and I enjoy watching.
Nice work this machine will produce income from areas that most shops would not make an equipment investment in. Additionally job shop trade work should be significant once word gets out (your job) and you will not have many competitors. Your many hours of re-hab will make this one of I believe your better investments in the future. Ray
I have heard they do but I think the manufacturing quality is higher now then it was because no one seems to make it a priority to try to sell you matched sets but I need to ask my belt supplier again.
To make viewing the Oil Sight Glass more visible when you are filling it, get a heavy duty magnet, a mirror, and some fixings so you can mount a mirror temporarily and angle so you can see it....or... high tech, get a camera with Wifi and a Cellphone or Tablet Computer and set up the camera to video the Oil Sight Glass and watch it on the Cellphone or Tablet Computer... I think either one would work to make that job easier.
I realize it's to late now, but the next time you change the oil install ball valves on the drains. This way you can control the oil instead of dealing with just the drain plugs. Just a thought. Overall nice work.
Oil Nazis ! I’ve certainly enjoyed the range of non-traditional cutting fluids, from Anchor Lube’s soap in a rope, to Josh’s ATF, to Stefan’s alcohol (who knew ?).

Drilling and tapping on a gearbox with gears and bearings still installed? Don’t know the circumstances, just wondering how you kept things clean.

I'm curiourious why gold is not used on shaft seal surfaces more often; it seems so little would be needed.
because they would have to plate it and would add additional cost. and also gold has poor abrasion resistance.
