    Toyota could not find the problem and refuse to acknowledge there is a problem.
    My problem was exactly as described and I followed the instructions and fix it in 1 hour.

    Man, I wish Toyota put your channel in their website. It actually will proof how Toyota needs proper maintenance, not repair.

      Yea toyota would just say how much do you love your prius? "umm yea your gonna need a new egr valve, intake, throttle body, head gasket, Oil, antifreeze and and tune up." " im sorry, yes i know but this is what we have to do"

    • @rondhole
      @rondhole 3 роки тому

      @@unclejay9205 LOL ...., that's normal maintenance. 2010-2012 indeed has designed flaw head gasket. The rest are all ok passing 200k miles easily. Throttle body, sparkplug, cleaning intake manifold are parts of maintenance for all cars after 120k miles. Goodluck with any GM or European cars that needs no serious repair before 100k miles. There are some problems but all are under recalls such as inverter, and some early version of brake booster. At least until August 2021, 2011 or newer got free replacement unlimited miles. Statisticaly, it is still one of the most reliable car. Although, 2nd gen has much less problems in the first 10 years/300k miles.

    • @paladain55
      @paladain55 2 роки тому

      @@rondhole theres no design flaw in the head gasket. Its the piston and rings. But they are all effected by the same issues it just takes longer for the problems to develop on the later models.

    • @rondhole
      @rondhole 2 роки тому +1

      @@paladain55 piston and rings effects pre-2015 model where Toyota used low tension rings and piston with smaller return holes. In 2013, the oil consumption is much less than 2010-2012 because the piston was revised that year together with head gasket. Most 3rd gen prius that consume high oil is pre 2013 and also many are used mainly in city with 10k miles oil change interval. Toyota actually recommend 5k miles for city drives and heavy traffic in the manual.

    • @rondhole
      @rondhole 2 роки тому +2

      @@paladain55 sequoia is the twin of Land Cruiser, really reliable. Prius 2010-2012 has bad head gasket design that is revised in 2013. 1 q per 2500 miles is not that bad but it is on the way to go bad. Toyota revised piston in 2014 and piston rings in 2015. Generally speaking you are in high risk of many things go wrong on 2010 Prius.

    My husband helped me do this. When we took off the EGR cooler it was so full of carbon we couldn’t see through it. It took several cans of break cleaner and still was clogged in most vent holes. We finaly used OVEN OFF and that was remarkable how fast it broke all of that down. In the end we cleaned almost every passage, except a few on the edge of the inside of the cooler. After putting it all back together it improved the performance, but never got rid of the shake while accelerating at times. Even though we disconnected the EGR sensor like you said and ran it and the shake stopped, this cleaning didn’t fix the problem. We tried then removed the EGR plug again and we immediately had this shaking problem. So even though the cleaning helped the performance of the car it did not affect the shaking misfire it only improved the acceleration and made that smoother. It was so incredibly frustrating to have done that hard work and it didn’t fix the shaking misfire. Getting that EGR cooler off with no easy task. Just as a sidenote I also replaced the PCV valve since it was a inexpensive way to also help improve the performance of the vehicle. I am also going to add a oil catch can to help prevent the oil and fuel from traveling up to the EGR.

      I have the same issue. I took apart my stuff in the winter (a week ago). Hard work yes. But I didn't have clogging in the cooler, the valve, intake, pipe, or anywhere else. Anyways, I cleaned everything, so it was even cleaner. But still the same issue. When I remove the plug on the EGR, it does improve, almost entirely - I still notice a very slight shudder on slow accel, but its nearly imperceptible. I've checked a number of other things - wiring, ECM to EGR, ECM to MAF sensor - all good. I've changed the throttle body to a good used one. I've checked the EGR motor coil resistances, all seem fine. The car gives no codes on scanning, no warning lights on the dash. The problem does seem to increase a bit as the car warms up, and the problem is exactly as he describes it in the video, except its not there only at operating temp. Its there all the time. Shudders, and engine rattling, low power, only on slow acceleration.

    • @tracyu3580
      @tracyu3580 Рік тому

      @@lyndonthan4350 after still having the problem of the misfire shaking I then tried what another UA-camr suggested and ALL of the misfire shaking and codes went away and it’s been several months now with no problems.
      That suggestion was to remove the lid to your coolant reservoir. Flip it over and remove the black “O” ring around the stem that sticks up from the middle of the cap. Put the ring some where you will be able to come back to it in the future. Put the cap back on the coolant reservoir. See if that makes it all go away.

    Success hurrah update after all the attempts at diagnosing this rattling ice engine I finally fixed it?, it wasn't the intake manifold nor EGR valve nor cylinder head gasket or as I suspected a faulty Throttle Position Sensor.
    I am a retired mechanic with many years in industry so I may be rusty but I do know what I'm talking about and I hope this story helps others avoid getting ripped off.
    I had replaced the spark plugs in its service along with oil and filter, there was zero indication of a head issue as no fluid loss, no smoke from exhaust, no overheating, no oil in the water or visa versa, I did get a code multiple misfires which after clearing a few times settled on misfire detected on Cylinder 4 I moved plugs around but fault came back still saying no4 so I moved the coil packs and still it said no4 so not plug nor coil pack.
    I blocked the EGR with a thin blade and the fault was still there rattling and a new code "insufficient flow through EGR system" I removed the blade, I also removed the EGR assembly thoroughly cleaned it, and the pipe to the intake manifold and used long brushes to decarbonisation the manifold once removed, I also cleaned up the throttle body and bought the specific cleaner for the MAF sensor, all of the above were dirty and will have benefitted from the good cleaning but they weren't the cause of the shake rattle and roll between 1450-1550 RPM so what else was there?? the injectors are electronically controlled pulse so as it was an easy test I dismantled just enough to remove them and move the one from no4 and put it in no1 cylinder, reassemble clear codes and run engine, fault obviously still there but importantly the fault code had moved with the injector, just to double confirm I repeated this process this time putting suspect injector into no3 cylinder and sure enough the new code said misfire No3, so I ordered a aftermarket set which were about $80AUD delivered, I installed them this morning and once the system depressurised the engine ran smooth, I erased codes and disconnected both battery systems to enable the car to reset to factory, at least that's how some forums recommended a full reset, after reconnecting batteries and trying a few times to get car to start it finally did and was smooth so I boxed everything up final check for fuel leaks, all good, out to road test.
    instantly she felt like a new car switching between ice and electric smoothly, acceleration back to full power, cruising excellant, no sign of feel of a misfire, no rattles bangs pops or shakes, it quite literally was perfect and a massive relief I had finally found and fixed the problem, shame my ODBC which has the Lexus software installed couldn't pick up the faulty injector out of the gate would have saved soooo muuuch time and effort, all up though it has cost me several hours researching and testing but less than a couple of hundred dollars to fix, heaven knows what a Lexus dealership would have tried to screw me for.
    I just have one tiny issue since reconnecting batteries there is a warning "Check Hybrid System" which is odd as on road test pressing the DISP button with right thumb on steering wheel I can see the system switching exactly as it is supposed to charging discharging and switching ice to electric and back, I feel there isn't an actual problem because there wasn't prior and this is just something that needs resetting so a little more research unless anyone can give me a clue.
    I hope my story helps others having same issue, I thank all forum inputs but nobody suggested injectors so maybe this can be added to list to be checked when encountering this mysterious shake rattle and roll of the ct200h.

      I'm getting the same problem after cleaning Everything out and replacing the EGR cooler. I read an article that if it gets really clogged up and misfire starts then trouble starts in the piston/engine and engine coolant starts to leak into the engine, not good. So the head gasket must be replaced ASAP or if it's real bad then yeah i think time for new engine or car, but hopefully people fix it before it gets worse. I'm trying to confirm if it is the head gasket. I drove 1,000, well now 2,000 miles on it and very concerned. Toyota failed this EGR cooler part for long term use it seems.

    Pls I seriously need your help. My location is Nigeria. There are no mechanics here who can really work on hybrid cars.
    For the past 2 months, I have been having rattling and knocking sound. With no error codes. I cleaned the whole egr systems, cleaned injectors, changed spark plugs, cleaned throttle body, cleaned PC valve, Cleaned inlet manifold, I have oil catch can installed for about 5 months now. Upon all these, the car is still rattling and making knocking sound. Especially when it's charging the HV battery.
    If I drive fast the sound disappears.
    My coolant doesn't shot, my engine oil doesn't have water in it but I noticed the oil does shot. So I can't say it's blown head gasket.
    And today this new incident happened.
    Now if I remove the 12v battery head for 5 minutes and put it back the car starts on ev only after 3 to 5 seconds then car trys to start the engine and the ready light goes off and check hybrid system light and other error lights comes on on dash board.
    Is this a sign that my engine knocked?
    Will Changing the crankshaft position sensor solve the issue?
    What exactly should I do?
    The car has 145,000 miles on it.
    The error codes it shows using toyota techstream now are P0335, P0A0F, C1259, C1310

    Question same synptons, but add oil is disappearing, could this be a blown head gasket?

    • @SidewaysGts
      @SidewaysGts 10 місяців тому

      couple things to check for with the common blown headgasket on the prius:
      1: Death rattle on start up.
      After letting the car sit over night, when you start it in the next morning there will be a *major* death rattle. You can not confuse this for anything else- It will buck and rock and shake violently.
      Whats happening here is coolant is weeping into the cylinders from the headgasket, which doesnt like to compress- and the motor struggles to run for a moment before this gets blown out the exhaust.
      If your car is doing this: STOP DRIVING IT. This death rattle can result in bent rods. If you catch it early- you can just replace the headgasket. If you bend a rod, youre repairing the entire engine.
      2: If the above is true: Coolant will be disappearing. Check the reservoir, if its slowly going down- another common sign it could be the gasket.
      As for oil disappearing: Sad reality, these cars just burn oil. TLDR on this is toyota uses fairly weak oil control rings. Typical thinking is that these control rings have slightly less friction, which means you cruise around at slightly less throttle, which by relation means slightly better emissions.
      These work great- for the first 100~ thousand miles, but after that they start to gunk up and seize, which inhibits their ability to prevent oil from getting past into the combustion chamber. There are hybrid oil additive kits that can *help* clean this up, and they will help- but theyre not miracle workers. The "proper" way to fix this is to unfortunately rebuild the engine.

    Update: HGasket replaced and runs perfect now.
    RESULTS AFTER CLEANING EVERYTHING - SAME PROBLEM - Very concerned I'm gonna either have a engine failure, weaken a piston rod, blow head gasket. So it's important i fix this ASAP.
    (I cleaned manifold/egr pipe and valve, new spark plugs, clean throttle body, replaced pcv valve, and ALL fluids) AND REPLACED EGR COOLER: IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO REPLACE OR CLEAN EGR COOLER EVERY 100K MILES +/- OR SOONER. Currently I'm guessing I may need the head gasket replaced ASAP!... reading into it now.
    I'm still getting the engine stutter/vibration/misfire on low accel about a few times every 100 miles. So the issue has lessened a bit but I believe since I drove my car almost 2,000 miles now - perhaps the problem is worse (and simple cleaning or replacement no longer the solution). No codes coming up on the OBD scanner (before the cleaning it was a misfire on #2)
    X
    So now I'm hoping to take action before head gasket blows. My coolant level seems to be not leaking into the engine any more but it did go all the way down to the bottom of the tank once, but that was before cleaning everything (possible I was replacing the engine coolant and needed to add more? ...Scary... I monitored engine coolant temps, ok so far. freeway= 190-196+/- degree F.

    Here is the important article to avoid engine failure. It says early Gen 3 (2010) applies to. I have a 2013. Not 100% sure if this is directly related issue but it seems like.
    www.torquenews.com/8113/should-i-change-engine-or-head-gasket-my-2010-prius
    Things to look for: engine coolant going down or leak (into engine) and misfires causing engine shake.
    [ Not sure if necessary to replace the Water pump every 120k, but they say it has a weak plastic propeller, potential to fail, good idea to replace before or around 200k miles.]
    Those are two indicators that we already have a failing head gasket.
    Replace it ASAP to prevent permanent damage.

      Saw your video on why head gaskets tend to fail on prius at high mileage. I'm at 231K now. I think it is high probability that it is head gasket since I drive 200 miles a day. Hoping it just needed a new ignition coil on the misfire #2 but since I'm at 231K miles maybe head gasket replacement time. Coolant seems stable but there may be a very slow leak causing the misfire on slow accel about 2-7 times every 100 miles. Going to talk to my mechanic.

    I am having this exact issue. 2015 Prius 2 ex-taxi with about 370K. Idles fine, runs cold fine, runs 85 mph fine, and not throwing any fault codes. But occasionally, under a slight load, usually around 30-40 mph the drivetrain hammers so hard it seems like it's going to tear itself apart. It feels like "lugging" does in a manual trans car when shifted into too high a gear for the road speed. If I step on the gas to increase the load the issue goes away. If I let off the gas or step on the brakes to reduce the load the issue also goes away. I was convinced it was a trans issue or maybe that funky clutch damper thing. But I just took it out for a test and disconnected the EGR and I can't get the hammering to reappear at any speed. I'll tear it down as soon as I get an intake gasket and see if this solves my issue. I'll report back if so. BTW, not one of the self-proclaimed "experts" on the Prius chat groups mentioned doing this.
