The self-shadows on the characters are way more realistic in MK9 possibly showing color transfer through some form of global illumination while all the shadows on MK8 are just black.
@@ivanaviNieblathere is light bouncing going on, definitely a GI solution as well. You can see the light bounce from ground to walls and vise versa, also the fire coming from the boost of the cars emit light to the sourrounding surfaces like the car itself and the street. This is a HUGE jump, but I agree to make it more obvious for the most people I would've used an entirely different track to show this, or honestly make the overall shading style more distinct from MK8 to emphasize the difference. This could, and will look like MK8 from the style and that might be a bad choice, at least for this trailer. I'm sure when we see other tracks, real full resolution gameplay, it will show there is a major difference
@@kewa_design the thing is that those effects can be accomplished with non tracing methods, and I think TotK and Metroid Prime Remaster already do. To know that raytracing has been used we would need to se multiple color transfer and mixing between them, even in the littlest possible things like Mario's clothing to other parts of his clothes. And shadows should be softer at the edges without looking pixelated. But that's hard to see in the current trailer, if those telltale signs are really there to begin with
If doesn't end up looking significantly better, I'm gonna be disappointed as hell. You have to keep in mind that Mario Kart 8 was a Wii U game. So 2 consoles later.
I remember when MK8 came out for the Wii U and I was blown away by how good a Nintendo game could look, I hope the same goes for MK9 when we see the beautiful uncompressed gameplay on our Switch 2's!
This is also a clear shift to physically based rendering and an overall much more modern rendering and lighting pipeline. That and the much higher polygon budget has me very excited to see some of the more elaborate courses. There had better be a New Donk City course as well as one based on Mario Wonder's first zone cause those would be positively gorgeous
@spaghetto181 No, Mario Kart 8 does not make use of PBR. If memory serves, the first Nintendo game to use PBR was Breath of the Wild. Most of their franchises have transitioned now, with a few notable exceptions.
11 years later and two generations have passed since MK8. I have to say, compression or not, the visuals leave a whole lot to be desired. I’m hoping the full reveal looks substantially better than what we see here.
Yeah especially since 8 and 8 deluxe looked phenomenal, they should've built upon those graphics to make a REAL next gen mario kart. Plus, this cartoony less-realistic style worries me that there won't be anti gravity
I have to disagree- while the track in the teaser isn’t super flashy, the lighting and shadows and polygon count are all a huge improvement. I’m sure that when we get more info we’ll see tracks that look even more visually impressive. Besides, this is “Mario Bros. Circuit”- I’m sure it’s the first track, or one of the first. Those are always more simple. I think it’s clear upon a closer look that the graphical upgrade is significant. Not being able to tell at first glance isn’t even necessarily a bad thing- we got a short amount of footage, and mk8DX looks great as is, so it’s not like it looking like it is bad. Personally I don’t prioritize visuals with mariokart, i think the only time i’ve actively disliked visuals is most of the DLC originating from Tour being much more basic than the base MK8/8DX tracks. But that’s expected from a mobile port. As much as I wish they did more to upgrade those visuals, it’s better they ported the mobile game tracks to preserve them with little change than not at all, since live service mobile games all stop working eventually, often quicker than console games’ services.
The only thing I noticed was the aliasing is still visible which likely means they aren't using any sort of DLSS equivalent upscaling in portable mode. Likely exclusively a docked mode feature to save battery.
Mario’s skin has that subsurface scattering (or at least the illusion of it) making his skin look more red. It makes the old model look so flat and plastic.
I prefer 8 to 9, visually speaking. It’s not the first time I’ve found an older MK to look better, as I believe that Double Dash looks better than Wii.
I'm mixed about the 8 and 9 comparison, as I find both art styles visually appealing. (Some of MK8 is dated like Donkey Kong's model and his default creepy teeth grin). MK9 is incredibly bouncy and energetic whilst MK8 is to this day genuinely impressive for pulling off a realistic yet still such a "Mario" look. The lighting and texture work still looks fantastic. I share the exact opinion about Double-Dash and Wii, though. Double-Dash 100% looks better
@@s8v1 I can't help but feel confused watching all these videos saying that the new Mario Kart looks better when imo the only thing that looks better are the character models, the track they're racing on looks LITERALLY like the booster course pass/Tour type of artstyle, MK8 (base game) looks so much modern. (for me)
Well... We don't know how footage was captured, in fairness. With it being a CG trailer and all. But I do have high hopes, I think the Switch 2 will be a fantastic system.
This game is so beautiful. I cannot wait to see the full list of characters and their new renders. I was so excited when I saw they decided to go back to DK’s and Bowser’s retro renders. They look so good.
Not sure why people are connecting DK to the movie, it’s definitely based off the official Nintendo artwork. Makes sense since all the characters so far seem to be based on that style.
I still dont underestand why people keep calling it "mario kart 9", its gonna be mario kart 10, tour is 9, and also companies never call their products "9" cause is not too easy to market, for example iphone X or windows 10, never was a 9 one.
Mario looks just like his promotional artwork for SM64! If Nintendo remakes SM64 to have everything look exactly like the modelwork from all the 90's guidebooks and magazines my childhood mind will be blown once more!🤯
Look up render96, it’s the pc port of Mario 64 with models based off of the renders and promo art for the game with improved textures. So what you’re asking for exists 😅, just not by Nintendo… lol
I like that they are going for a more different style instead of just being a more updated version of Mario kart 8. I really like this stylized cartoony look
People are missing the point with the visuals. The key thing of note is not the quality of the textures and models compared to Mario Kart 8. MK8 punches WAY above what the Wii U was actually capable of. The key thing to note is actually the *scale* of the course itself. No Mario Kart has ever offered a track that is as huge as what we are seeing on Switch 2, and I think THAT will be the main thing that sets this game apart from its predecessors.
@@coolertuep In truth, the UA-cam compression combined with the fact the actual game footage is only a portion of the 1080p video means we cannot actually see how high quality some graphical elements are. What we can see is amazing stylised characters, beautiful animation, and great effects. All of that, coupled with a massive track and great character designs, including their karts. Based on that this game visually is great.
Seems like all of the new consoles are struggling to look much better. You can see differences if you zoom in and do side by side comparisons. However, a lot of people couldn’t tell that wasn’t MK8 when they first showed it.
It's mostly the more casual people that couldn't tell because at first glance I'll admit did look pretty similar untill you start to pay attention to it more
Yeah, since graphics now are petty good, the graphics leaps are small compared to 10 years ago. That may be the reason why they changed the graphic style.
People keep saying they look like wonder or the movie but how luigi and bowser look made me realise they’re trying to make them look like the N64 renders
Everyone, make sure to keep in mind they only showed a visually dull place with barely any visual effects that would look inticing. I'm sure once we get into a City, water, or space, the differences will be much more clear.
Looks like shit considering the 11 year difference between 8 and this new one, if anything it somehow looks worse and way more bland lookin, rlly disappointed rn man, hope it looks way better than wat this teaser made it out to be
"They're pushing graphics to a new level"?? Where do you see that? I understand Nintendo prioritizes battery life and cost and they try to get away with it by having a good art style and that might be the smarter move financially, but you can't tell me these graphics are better in any meaningful way. Even from ps4 to ps4 pro or series S to X you get a far more substantial and visible boost and that's within the same generation. My guess is the new hardware will allow it to run games with big worlds that couldn't even launch on the first one like GTA V, but they will still look like gamecube games graphically.
I agree partially, however, who wouldn't trade graphical fidelity for faster loading times, consistent 60fps and great gameplay 🙋🏿♂️ Even in today's generation I'd take PS4 graphics with those things than the inconsistency we see in this new generation. The former, is what I truly believe Nintendo is going to achieve this generation 🙏🏿
Nintendo has been going for a more cartoonish artstyle for a while now. Mario Wonder was a prime example and this game is clearly inspired by it. While i understand people wanting semi realistic graphics, I think the Toonish artstyle does fit the Mario brand better.
Peach also looks very similar to her wonder design and Daisy is quite tan in this game so I think they are baseing the designs off their classic art and n64 era designs! Very very exciting :D
It makes so much sense to make the next Mario Kart wildly different to MK8 because you can still play all of the MK8 content on Switch 2. So bring on some weird twists or maybe a big story/adventure mode and sure 24 players just because we can
@@coolertuepThe Wii U was a home console. The switches are handhelds. What exactly do you expect graphically from a tablet? Nintendo was never competing with the current Gen Play Station and Xbox with their literal HYBRID console

Man, after what feels like decades of Mario characters being rigidly on-model, it feels so strange to see squash-and-stretch applied to them (in games that aren't made by Next Level Games, anyway). The updated models are also very good, even Donkey Kong's (which surprised me by how different it was at first, but I quickly grew to love it)! Also 2:16 the "boxart car" from 3D Hot Rally is called "Monster", just so you know.
I wouldn't call it a "visual leap", I just think it's a different artstyle. They made new models for the characters but in terms of technical stuff it's largely the same.
This is very interesting. Rosalina's snow mobile might be hinting that there won't be kart customization, or we now have an upgraded kart builder with all new kinds of parts
I think you might be able to set how many racers you want. 8, 12, or 24. While a potential double dash mode may not be included, I have a feeling that we can easily get a new team mode which can be teams of 2, 3, 4, or 6 depending on the number of players. I'm aware that team races exist in DS, Wii, and 8, but that’s only two teams. I'm thinking of up to twelve teams. That could make the point system fun. I hope I can select which characters I want on my team and even switch players in between races.
I wasn't very impressed with what I saw. I think they needed to showcase something that really wows people instead showing something that's seemingly not too different from Switch 1 graphics
Love that Nintendo put focus on the characters and understands/honors classic cartoon animation with squash and stretch, since their characters are based on classic cartoons (which is one reason why they're so timeless and appealing).
I just hope the footage they showed is a prototype, because showing this game the way it is now as an introduction to the console, isn’t exactly the BEST thing? It doesn’t look like much of an upgrade to keep it short. But I’m sure that’ll change when we see the actual direct (hopefully)
You people are way too easily impressed. This is like the smallest graphical generation leap I've ever seen. Hope they show something more impressive in April.
Remember when you saw a new trailer and were immediately stunned by the cool new graphics? Yeah, nowadays you count some pixels and 2 frames more ane call it a day.
While I do think there will be 24 racers, having those starting spots isn't like irrefutable evidence. For whatever reason it could be a stylistic choice, after all there were seemingly not 24 racers in this gameplay segment. Although granted, this would all be misleading from Nintendo.
@@MrMartDKnah why do u it’s a style choice it would not make sense to have 12 extra start grids to be there for no reason at all. I theirs a lot more character racing but it’s just hard to make out some of them

Agreed 💯 HOWEVER, why is Nintendo trying to get us NOT to talk about Switch 2. It sure does feel that way 😤😠
Yep, i love dk

A lot of people are panicking at a first look that isn't even full screen. I think when this game is properly revealed it'll look great.
I hope you are right. Otherwise I will be disappointed as hell. Mario Kart 8 was a Wii U game. Let's not forget that. This is 2 console generations later.
@@svenmandelkorn3238Nintendo are too good at art style sometimes. That probably why people are not sure if this looks much better. But the smaller details and animations are clearly an improvement
@@Mirage475 i don't think so. I literally think Mario Kart 8 looks better.
@svenmandelkorn3238 The steering wheel in 8 looks blocky, while in 9, it looks round
@ Nope objectively wrong. More polygons on the wheel and model
I wish people would stop saying Donkey Kong looks like the movie design because he's clearly stylized after his classic appearances.
But it looks like a fusion of his classic design and his DKC design. The same fusion of those designs as the movie design.

What’s your pfp from
@NickMario1 it's from the hyper dimension Neptunia series of games.
Same here
Im one of the few who wants to go back to the SSBB graphics. The rated-T era haha
Same, Mario Kart 8 is one of the best looking Nintendo games!
From the thumbnail, I was thinking "actually it does look a little better" until I noticed the one I thought looked better was MK8 lol.
Why? It appears to be the exact same game engine with reworked poly count, models, and general details. Seems better in the new game though at a generalized level that it's still Mario kart.
the lighting on the MK8 footage looks better (but it also makes sense since a desert scene is going to be way brighter than a normal track)
HAHAHAHA 10/10
What a shame...
It's a lot more lively, I think
I thought the same thing lol, but I guess the new Mario Kart gameplay IS zoomed in footage that was basically part of the background of a video. At least we can tell there's a new art style to the characters and karts.
The self-shadows on the characters are way more realistic in MK9 possibly showing color transfer through some form of global illumination while all the shadows on MK8 are just black.
Anyone who thinks 8's simple shading is more realistic has either never gone outside...
Or has never really opened their eyes.
I think it looks a bit more like sub surface scattering than GI
But that's hard to see in the current trailer, if those telltale signs are really there to begin with
I kind expected more do to MK8 being almost 11 years old now. I’ll wait to see more before judging. MK8 looks phenomenal for how old it is now.
same, but I think the bigger scale in general, and the fact it'll be higher resolution maybe makes up for that
Yep, MK8 did more than it should with its assets. First glance here already shows a jump in polygon count so it will only get better.
That's my biggest argument against the redesigns. The old ones look amazing and expressive! If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
If doesn't end up looking significantly better, I'm gonna be disappointed as hell. You have to keep in mind that Mario Kart 8 was a Wii U game. So 2 consoles later.
@@alonkatz4633 This also look amazing and way more expressive. Look at Donkey Kong.
Seeing both in motion would have helped considering they appear to be putting an emphasis on animation over realism.
Wasn't mk8 textures already PBR though?
@spaghetto181 No, Mario Kart 8 does not make use of PBR. If memory serves, the first Nintendo game to use PBR was Breath of the Wild. Most of their franchises have transitioned now, with a few notable exceptions.
I like that Peach finally has her hair down. She’s had it in a ponytail since Double Dash
She's also wearing her dress while riding a bike. Interesting choice...

11 years later and two generations have passed since MK8. I have to say, compression or not, the visuals leave a whole lot to be desired. I’m hoping the full reveal looks substantially better than what we see here.
If they add something crazy like the Wonder Flower, I don't care, it could have MK7 graphics, it would still be amazing
Yeah especially since 8 and 8 deluxe looked phenomenal, they should've built upon those graphics to make a REAL next gen mario kart. Plus, this cartoony less-realistic style worries me that there won't be anti gravity
How much better can it really look? It's a stylized cartoonish game, there's only so much that can be improved.
@ Ever seen the Mario film? Check out the Mario Kart section. There’s plenty of room for improvement
I would love to see them with airplanes like diddy kong racing
Most of the commenters didn't watch the video

The characters look exactly like the box art and title screen versions of the N64, I really like this!
Remember that MK8 is a Wii U game. Literally PS3 graphics.
The Wii U had a better GPU.
and for some reason that wii u game looks better
@@s8v1 I can't help but feel confused watching all these videos saying that the new Mario Kart looks better when imo the only thing that looks better are the character models, the track they're racing on looks LITERALLY like the booster course pass/Tour type of artstyle, MK8 (base game) looks so much modern. (for me)
@@andressuarez1728 really disappointing............
PS3 came out around the time of the Wii, but you're probably comparing graphics power, not generation.
I just realized that a lot of the small details you've pointed out were shown on the HANDHELD mode, which is a good sign for its power
Well... We don't know how footage was captured, in fairness. With it being a CG trailer and all. But I do have high hopes, I think the Switch 2 will be a fantastic system.
@@daynnethedrummer684I highly doubt that was cg. More likely a dev tool camera over a real or scripted race in-engine.

"graphical leap" they just changed the artstyle
I still dont underestand why people keep calling it "mario kart 9", its gonna be mario kart 10, tour is 9, and also companies never call their products "9" cause is not too easy to market, for example iphone X or windows 10, never was a 9 one.
You're right. Underrated comment. Maybe people don't count all the mario kart games, if they count they'll understand the logical order
If you count arcade ones and mk8dx as a separate entry (tbh with the expansion pass it can be depending on how you see it) it's like Mario kart 13
Mario looks just like his promotional artwork for SM64! If Nintendo remakes SM64 to have everything look exactly like the modelwork from all the 90's guidebooks and magazines my childhood mind will be blown once more!🤯
They need to do that with Rare's Donkey Kong Country games. That would be a dream come true for me !
You should check out Render96.

This + the fact that we have only a blurry 10 seconds trailer. It's not enough
It just looks bad. No need for coping. This wont be a reason to buy a switch 2, especially with 8 having like 100 tracks now.

Dont really understand how when artistically it looks very different. Though you can't really admire the details
It's mostly the more casual people that couldn't tell because at first glance I'll admit did look pretty similar untill you start to pay attention to it more
Yeah, since graphics now are petty good, the graphics leaps are small compared to 10 years ago. That may be the reason why they changed the graphic style.
AMAZED at how quickly you managed to crank this out. Well done, Brandon!
Keep in mind: we haven’t had a Mario Kart game since 2014. No, Tour does not count, and 8 Deluxe does not count.
Absolutely not a generational leap.
Agreed 💯
doesnt look like a game that came out two console generations after 8 tbh
I love the more cartoony vibe like Wonderland! DK looks amazing so far.
Idk, Mario Kart 8 already was gorgeous. They got an uphill battle in the graphics department.
The new Mario design makes me think that the old one looks grumpy.
It fucking does, new one finally looks young and (kinda)inspiiring again, maybe why they changed va well.
They don't have death stare though 😢
Luigi 😂
Looks like shit considering the 11 year difference between 8 and this new one, if anything it somehow looks worse and way more bland lookin, rlly disappointed rn man, hope it looks way better than wat this teaser made it out to be
It’s unfortunately the art style they chose. They opted for booster course pass art direction which I’m not sure I like.
I mean, I'm fine with that tbh-
I agree partially, however, who wouldn't trade graphical fidelity for faster loading times, consistent 60fps and great gameplay 🙋🏿♂️ Even in today's generation I'd take PS4 graphics with those things than the inconsistency we see in this new generation. The former, is what I truly believe Nintendo is going to achieve this generation 🙏🏿
That looks like mario kart 64 remake
With snes artstyle
It's going to be called Super Mario Kart...Just like the SNES one. All characters will be playable just like they did in Smash Ultimate
Nintendo has been going for a more cartoonish artstyle for a while now. Mario Wonder was a prime example and this game is clearly inspired by it. While i understand people wanting semi realistic graphics, I think the Toonish artstyle does fit the Mario brand better.
I hope Luigi’s death stare comes out on mario kart9 too lol
Still can't believe we went an entire console without a genuinely new Mario Kart game.
Well the Wii U kinda didn't exist (according to Nintendo itself)

Okay, but I lost it at "Smooth like a Wii U disc" because it's so true.
I love stylished over realistic, I think makes the game feel better overall, I'll buy MK9 first day
2:19 This made me realize that the Mario Motors logo on some of the signs in the trailer is styled JUST like the 3D HOT RALLY logo.
So bring on some weird twists or maybe a big story/adventure mode and sure 24 players just because we can
When comparing the two, people need to remember that Mario Kart 8 was originally a Wii U game.
3 console generations, no significant graphical advancement. Welcome to Nintendo

I love they are adopting Mario more chunky early looks. It's lovely.
I wouldn't call it a "visual leap", I just think it's a different artstyle. They made new models for the characters but in terms of technical stuff it's largely the same.
To me mario in the new one looks more like super mario 64 mario
This is very interesting. Rosalina's snow mobile might be hinting that there won't be kart customization, or we now have an upgraded kart builder with all new kinds of parts
The models are way higher poly than MK8, but that’s all I could tell about it
I feel like the visuals are more like N64 era renders than Mario Wonder. It's amazing

The squash hitbox strats are going to be crazy
The new designs is just.. idk they just look more scwonchy idk how to describe it but I just love it
I think you might be able to set how many racers you want.
Agreed! ua-cam.com/video/pjOrIBv3hYs/v-deo.htmlsi=WJntrjcNDaKI4LJb
To me it looks more like they are going for a “retro” art style and I’m all for it
People were saying that might not be Donkey Kong…? Why are people so dumb lol
It's A.I. generated Donkey Kong.
Maybe it's grown up Kiddy Kong lol
The design is so different to previous incarnations, I understand the confusion. If you've not seen the Mario movie, I think its justified confusion.
I'm not a big fan of the new DK design, it looks weird.
but it kinda reminded me of the old DK design from the arcades a bit.
It looks like a 3D model of DK Jr's sprite from Super Mario Kart on the SNES just without a shirt.
Love that Nintendo put focus on the characters and understands/honors classic cartoon animation with squash and stretch, since their characters are based on classic cartoons (which is one reason why they're so timeless and appealing).
Peach looks like her sprite at the end of Mario world
I just hope the footage they showed is a prototype, because showing this game the way it is now as an introduction to the console, isn’t exactly the BEST thing? It doesn’t look like much of an upgrade to keep it short. But I’m sure that’ll change when we see the actual direct (hopefully)
You people are way too easily impressed. This is like the smallest graphical generation leap I've ever seen. Hope they show something more impressive in April.

Having 24-player races isn't just a guess on your part!
Look at 2:26 to see 24 starting spots at the beginning of the track.
While I do think there will be 24 racers, having those starting spots isn't like irrefutable evidence. For whatever reason it could be a stylistic choice, after all there were seemingly not 24 racers in this gameplay segment. Although granted, this would all be misleading from Nintendo.
