Well, I didn't watch the Keeps portion of the video, I got nothing left to keep! 8-)) Would not have watched if you had titled it for what it obviously was: "Old Mail Van, can we get it to run?" I very much appreciated the end when you took a good look at the bottom end and showed why the starter died. I am looking forward to the further adventures with this truck. I'd get as cheap a running 232 ci 6 as I could and swap that in.

I am pretty sure your “Ice-Cream” van is actually a former US Postal Truck. The US Postal system used vans like these to bring mail out to “route boxes” (If you old enough to remember seeing green mailboxes in neighborhoods without a slot to put mail in) back in the days of twice a day mail delivery and letter carriers did not have individual postal vehicles to drive to their routes.
The amazing thing about this little truck is the overall lack of rust on it. These trucks were pretty much rusty buckets from the day they started life for a number of reasons starting with the sheet metal normally was stored outside so it’s was pre-rusted before it was stamped as well as the how the sheet metal was overlapped and spot welded together. With regards to the starter set all postal vehicles back then used a separate fender mounted starter solenoid and they generally used a Ford/AMC style starter. One thing is for sure is that engine is not spinning fast enough to ever start. I think if I was you I would of first would of taken the valve off and watched the push rods before I removed the oil pan

Finally a vehicle with the drivers seat on the correct side.
Each time I visited the US I open the wrong door, so I know just how odd it is.
BUT not as odd as this truck. Its a golf carts big brother.

    • @rypkepaulusma

Well, this vehicle has a righthand door ment for righthand driving. This door makes it safe to stop in the street and step out safely on the sidewalk for selling or delivering or emptying mailboxes without the risk of being run over. Not quite the same idea as a UK/Australian right side ride LOL

I notice most of the younger guys doing "Will it start" video crank the starter way longer than is safe. Do you notice how many end up replacing a starter by the end of the video that works fine at the beginning?
If it won't start in 15 seconds, you need to stop and let the starter cool down. And Ford/AMC starters are the worst even if not abused. This comes from the historical legacy that coils and starters were handed down from the 6 volt era of cars, 1955 and older. So we get resistors to use the 6 volt coils in 12 volt cars ( except when cranking) and we just have to do a little count in our heads to 15 seconds to protect the starters.

I always thought one of these would make a really neat "Dare To Be Different" type hot rod. Instead of dual tires on the back put some wide rear rims and tires. A drastic top chop using car seats instead of those bar stools and a good modern engine and drivetrain. I love the right hand drive. Ralphie should have cleaned those brake drums. How about swapping a Ford 300 cubic inch 6 cylinder?

Don't worry about the kitten...it is helping diagnostics with a CAT Scan!
I believe the engine is an AMC 232 or 258.
Not too impressive performance, but having 7 mains, they're tough.
Much later: Stuck engine? Try a 1970ish Gremlin or Hornet. Should be a drop in, and they made a blue million of them, so there should be a lot of them around. Pretty much unchanged to at least 75.
Also, try cleaning the battery posts (I'm sure you thought of that) and replace the old ends.

Love watching you channel. The vehicles the animals and the kids. You got everything. Used to mess around with the older Internationals. That's a Borg Warner transmission I'm sure. By 1973 international was using Chrysler automatic transmissions. That starter might be the same as an international V8 . Maybe you can get lucky and run across an AMC 258. I understand it's the same block just a little taller. One quick question about the goats. Friend of mine had a couple but they kept climbing up on everything in the yard including his vehicles. And goat hooves are hard on paint. He had to let them go..

Great content, and it's awesome to see the whole family together doing something together. The one thing I wish you would stop doing is cranking starters to their deaths, if not today you are seriously causing overall damage to the starter and wiring because of overheating. If a Vehicle won't start on the count of 5, then stop and figure out what is the next step to get a clean start. i'm not saying you can't force an engine to start if your willing to crank it to death but it's seriously bad for the starter, wires, electronics, coil etc. I do hope the best for you and your family and I hope to see many more awesome videos over the coming years. HAVE A GREAT WINTER.

Those are brand NEW rod & Main bearings for sure. Somebody has had that oil pan off before you purchased it, and they did not even clean out the sludge & junk from the oil pan, may also be metal in the pan too. Who really knows what they did for sure without a complete tear down, mic the crank to see if it is still standard or been machined. I think they was having the same problem as you are with it turning over too slow, they went in to have a look and decided to replace all the bearings, (Rod & Main) and then buttoned it back up with no success. Unless you are totally in love with it ? It`s time to move it on. I love everything about your channel. Ya`ll are a beautiful family, so much love for each other and it shows. Love your little black "helper"🤣 I still have my JB Weld within 4 feet of me; I've had to use it on numerous emergency fixes. The last time was on my first-gen RAV4 (rare 2-door, 97ish); one of my shift cables broke and I only had 1st, 3rd and 5th gear. I had to JB Weld the cable guide to the trans case until I received the new cable from a Toyota parts specialist.

First impressions of the ice cream truck, it's fugly, but it'd be really cool tubbed with a big block sandwiched into the engine bay and some wide drag radials.

Well, I am on the wrong side of 60yo, and my hair still won't fall out! :-( Apart from the motor, that van has so much potential. And Rocky is such a star...his "health food" consists of rusty nuts and bolts, and old wires, and almost anything. He is a magical beast, and he can't be separated from his "daddy", SD for long.

One of the functions of the condenser is to store up energy and release it in a flash causing the coil to fire. Without the condenser the coil will discharge slowly and not make a spark. This all takes place in a split second. The other function is to prevent sparks from jumping across the points and burning them. So if you don't have a condenser or if it is weak you may not get a spark from the coil or you may burn your points.

Almost certainly an old US mail delivery truck with the right hand drive and all. I was kind of surprised you did not do a cylinder compression test early on. Newbe watcher here, I will subscribe and look forward to your next post.

I am not a big Napa user but one product i like of theirs i not found any better is a silicon high temp cam lube that i used for lubing caliper pins so they moved free in and out so the calipers released and clamped as designed to do , and for the rear drum i cleaned the rear shields shoe contact points knocked down any ridges that would bind on and make clicking noise then apply some of the lube at each point then after freeing up the adjuster i used the lube on the threads to make it move as free to work as it should . I have seen some folks use antiseize on them also like you would put on plug threads with aluminum heads .

On the plugs .35 is normal gap for 60s cars and truck motors , but if i remember on new points they gap at .19 with used points at .16 .

I've been looking at this truck trying to figure out what it was used for, then it dawn on me! It is a mail truck from the mid-sixties.

Originally this was a U S mail truck. That is the reason for the right side drive controls. It wasn't used for home deliveries however. This was used more or less for business dropouts, and box bick ups.

Start motor stacks, so, grease bearings, till you get new ones to replace them, or a whole new start motor. Notice Motorcraft starter fixes, but will eventually fail. Motorcraft starter gear is 9 teeth, this one for 232 AMC engine uses a 10 teeth starter pinion.
I had an AMC 1973 Hornet, 258 engine.
Starter worked fine, with a motorcraft retractable gear(9 teeth pinion).
sometimes, always saturday night, or somehow, it used to stuck.
An old man, good friend and good mechanic, told me about 10 teeth bendix.
It never stucked again in 6 years i had that car.

Check for a rat nest in the exhaust pipe. Pull your valve cover off and make sure all your lifters are working and the valves are closing and raising and everything like that.

The old motors need a zinc additive like is in STP or 15/40 delo diesel oil , to mix well put a few quarts in motor add marvel into the rest of oil and whatever zinc additve you find and shake up then finish filling crank case .

Take that stater off again.& it needs to be regressed up in those bearing sleeves top.& bottom. That needs bearings replacements put in.& check the camshaft.& cylinder walls for pitting.& so fourth. I'd rebuild it.
