My motto in life is "Less is More"
I began nomadic life at age 65 July 2024 in a Subaru Outback premium.
Simple, no build, and I love it.
I have been everywhere in the middle of nowhere BLM, NF, rest stops, and even city camping. I don't stand out, so I just blend in anywhere. Having a great time!!!
Love you found a home base that will compliment your lifestyle.
    Best of both❤

I don’t think I could live a travel life without a home base. I’d always need a place to return to just to rest and recharge before setting out again. Glad you found a spot.

    • @martinep6293
      @martinep6293 9 днів тому +4

      Recharge from what??
Really leaving in nature is the ultimate goal. I am actually starting to feel comfortable among all the animals😂
Land is a whole other set of projects I am not quite ready for.
I need my photography to knock my socks off 😂.
I need to brush up on half a dozen foreign languages and fly around a bit
And so much more... ready for a very rugged SUV. Pre-dented 😂. Never an RV.

@@martinep6293 When you are full timing and always on the move, all the research, planning and figuring out where to go next, where will you be able to camp next. how long will it take to get there and will I get there before dark, will there be enough sky to set up Starlink, does it feel safe. If gale force winds are expected, which way do I orient my rig to not take the brunt of the wind. How much battery do I have left if it's been cloudy with no solar charging. Fnding out where can you dump, find water and so on. It's a surprising amount of research and constant decisions to make. Of course, it is a wonderful lifestyle to be grateful for. Being a tumbling tumbleweed can take a toll. Without breaks or a home base to recharge for a while, as wondrous as nomadic life is, it can wear you down, especially if you've been doing it for years.
There are many many many positives to being part of the nomadic, community - but it can also be good for the spirit to be part of an area, a neighborhood, a village...some kind of settled, on-going 'permanent' community and its people, connections, relationships and events. Not to mention having a doctor, dentist, etc. rather than trying to find different ones on the road.

@wayneukes2438 I have been doing exactly all that for 4 years (starting during the Covid crisis). Including getting better at hiking alone while surrounded by bears. Love animals, bears included. Respect is key.
Yes you need to be extremely organized and alert. Quite a few things to keep in mind at all times. I have been used to that all my life. I have never liked to be told what to do 😂. So that works for me.
I would not have a YT channel though: waste of time for me. Hiking 12 miles every day can be time consuming. Plus I dont want to spend much time sitting every day. I dont carry a camping chair!

@@martinep6293Being rootless is fun for a while. In the end it wears on one. It's still fun, but you find that you have to make a point to notice that. When you get in the habit, it can be hard to figure a way out. You want to just stop somewhere and learn people's names, but don't know where or how. Ted Simon lives it in his book Jupiter's Travels. He examines it a bit in his second book.
I was blessed to have a family home in Pennsylvania where my grandmother always welcomed me when the soul or the Bronco grew tired. Just knowing that all I had to do was get there was a relief of pressure. Bless her. It is good, when someone asks, to be able to answer where you are from.

@brucehalleran1149 In fact I am from a few places, some where I have not been in years but I have very strong roots there anyway. 50% of my DNA comes from 200 square miles along the sea shore. There is what is called atavism and I know I belong there. But I also feel at home in quite a few other places I have travelled in the past. And now I can see how I could call the high mountains home. I am not a people person. I love nature and wild animals. I can feel a connection to places without knowing anyone presently there. Places and cities emanate their history and culture and you dont have to know anybody there to feel it. But I would do just great living away from civilization. I need most of my time alone. I have many projects and a lot to learn so in fact I am very busy.
If I want a relaxed year I just share my time between the Gulf Coast and The Rocky mountains and a dozen great spots in between. I feel totally rooted in both places by now😂. I like this wild place with just the ocean, the dunes, the wind. I stay there all winter. Then I slowly migrate North with stops in South and North Texas. I am Texas based practically and I have no plans to change that. My car techs and my dentist are there, etc... my pit stop, so I can roam without annoying down time the rest of the year. There just are people that I trust there.
This year I am not sure what is going on in CO especially the Denver-Boulder area. It may be best to just head for Wyoming and visit an old backpacking area from grad school. Montana possibly too.
I absolutely stay away from places full of RVs. Although being a chicken I like a hard sided tent. I dont have a dog because I plan to spend time in grizzly country.

I occasionally camp with my small trailer, but I have added a camper shell for the times that I want the freedom of not having the responsibility of pulling the trailer. I use a pop-up tent at the back of the truck for standing up room, cooking, lounging, etc. That makes the truck my bedroom.
Can’t wait to see what you come up with.
Oh, by the way, I’m a single, 73 year old woman who camps with a dog….. so see…you have many more years of adventures ahead. I’m looking forward to your next one. Have fun!

The bin method with a focus on - what I need the most is the easiest to access - is working great for my extended SUV travels. One spoon, one fork, one knife, one cup. Paper plates combined with takeouts, suipermarkets, and restaurants takes care of cooking. No dishes - no washing.

Before you pick up the truck topper, consider a pop up truck camper instead. I've owned two and find them to be highly versatile. You need a place to stand up and be able to cook, bathe and dress. We switched to hard side truck campers and I owned two of them. The additional weight and top heavy feeling they give is a consideration. They are much different than a pop up camper. The weight and wind resistance is notable. You won't notice this with a pop up soft side truck camper!! You can leave it on your truck when you decide to make adventures with your travel trailer. Your truck can handle both at the same time. Good luck with your new decisions. I enjoy your photography..........keep them coming!!

I started out with my home base here in Tucson .. seems it was always my way to travel. My road vehicle is now a 2022 Toyota Tacoma with a 4Wheel Camper in the bed .. I take my house with me on the road! I usually go out for 5 to 7 days and then head home. Matter of fact I'm heading out this Tuesday for Quartzite and a few other places. Got a fridge now to carry my Italian Sweet Cream for the coffee. 🤠

I fulltime RVed for 10 yrs. Have beautiful off grid acreage at 5500 ft for the last 2.5 yrs. Travel trailer skirted and wood stove. At about 15 months, my feet were ITCHING to explore. Got a truck cap and my 2 dogs and I spent most of last summer in north higher elevation of AZ and southern high elevation Utah! We'd only come back to resupply propane for my trailer fridge (1 tank lasts about 3 wks in summer and I have auto switch valve). This coming summer, I imagine ill empty fridge and turn it off! It appears my mission is to see just how tiny I can live? 😋

Very happy for you! One thing that has worked for my husband and I, is a Eureka Jade tent. It is like having a screen room, with the durability of a tent. Almost full side screening x4 sides, with covers if needed. A floor and a small awning. It is sturdy and you don't need to take it down in high winds. Our 4 person was just the right size for an outdoor room. Great for bad weather days and one can set it up in minutes. It also has a small footprint, when packed. We carried one on our 5 month odyssey to Alaska and back to Indiana. Life is constantly prompting changes. It sounds like this is a good one for you. We wish you all the best.

I started watching your channel because I liked that you had the small, but completely self contained (with bathroom facilities) truck camper....which for me would be a must have. Filming inside after the adventures outside was always a cozy feeling. Then came the big trailer which was even more cozy and gave you more space. I get why the stress of pulling the trailer could get old. Probably the self contained van is the easiest to handle. It is hard for me to picture living out of a truck with no convenient bathroom facilities for weeks...but...you will do it and this will be a new challenge. Very nice that you got the opportunity to have a lovely home base.

Thats awesome that you found a place to park the rv without having the expense and worry of having a real home. We have moved our fifth wheel over 200 times in the last 5 years, and yes we have had a few incidents. I think you should go back to having a truck camper. Larry

Glad you found something. Don’t buy a piece of land in a rural area and assume that you can live there in a camper. That is often not the case. You have to go to some incredibly remote areas to be able to do that. Always research zoning, codes, rules, deed restrictions, easements and all of that before you buy land. In many areas you can only live on the land in your camper or RV or trailer as long as you are *actively building.

in the military I learned to use my one wool blanket to wrap around my air mattress. It sounds counterproductive to not use it over your body but the wool around the mattress warmed the air inside and kept me cozy and warm inside my sleeping bag during super cold Colorado or Korean winters. Perhaps you could figure out how to create a wool blanket sandwich wrap for yours.

i am so excited you found a home base. I am mostly excited that you are conrinuing on with your journey using your truck.
It has been tiring watching those who have ended their travels and although excited for them enjoying their new lives - eventually their channels dry up...at least to me. Only two channels I continue to watch and subscribe to as they grow because they continue to provide content not just because they have to, but, because they are providing content as their real life happens, good and bad.
You inspire me to get out there. I currently work at least 80 hours a week and yearn to return to the trail and travel.
All in all it appears that you have the best of both worlds. What a pleasant change for you.
I look forward to seeing how you get your truck fixed up for your future travel journeys.

I'm so glad to see this video! I've been a bit envious of your life on the road, and while thought about the downsides of towing you mentioned, I figured we'd make it work. About 6 months ago, we made the decision to buy a popup truck camper, because my husband didn't want to tow a trailer. I agreed because I wanted the freedom of not worrying about turning around and being able to go offload and get to remote locations more easily. The camper is small and can be cramped with us and our 100 lb black lab, so I wondered if we made a mistake. Seeing this video made me more confident that we made the right decision. Congrats on your new home base and the new adventures you'll be able to have!

I think a lot of your journey depends on the lifestyle you choose. A trailer does limit you, I know because I do have one. There are a bunch of tents that adapt to your style you’re heading towards. They can give you the added room for living that your topper doesn’t give you. However, the truck/ topper isn’t a trailer in size, insulation and a lot of other aspects. Your previous channel was hiked based so you should adapt. Good luck.

A few ideas I'd like to offer for consideration:
    • a raised storage platform (buy or build) for your truck bed. then you can sleep on top of it while having all your stuff below. I'd like to see you build -- it would make a need channel series to see your solution. But if you want a pre-built then Bambeds might be an option you like.
    • a very large tarp and support poles, to create a covered porch off the back of your truck. that will give you more weather shelter
    • a rack system that goes over your bed shell (there are several options out there), so that you can mount extra supplies and stuff like water cans, tools, etc.
    • a powered water filter system (like from Guzzle H2O or Clearsource) would let you stay off-grid in remote locations for longer if you're near a lake or stream
    • I think UA-cam allows you to schedule videos to appear. So you could create a bunch and schedule them to start appearing while you're out on the next adventures.

Cool! Ohio, has Park Owners Associations available for RV'S. We buy the lots (next to nothing) only pay 500 a year for dues. Technically, they are seasonal. It makes for a great home base for my old class A that I turned into a tiny home. I have a cargo trailer camper to travel in.

How exciting. You never know unless you try so best wishes for even greater success. It will be fun to watch how you get along in a shell camper and where you'll go. Then back "home" to regroup, refresh and plan the next adventures. You are so brave - it's glorious!

Congrats on making this change. Now you can explore Mineral King! It's only 40 miles west of Mt Whitney as the crow flies. The Mineral King road doesn't allow trailers, but your truck can handle the road. -One of the criteria for paradise is that it must be difficult to travel to. That's why you sometimes need to ditch the trailer to arrive at paradise. -In my mind, that's Mineral King 🙂

I had a travel trailer and because of the extra hassle it caused (same issues you had), I've built out the back of my truck (with a fiberglass camper shell) and am using that for camping. I looked at the pop up campers and the cost is prohibitive. Yes, it's lacking the perks of a travel trailer but is offset by the ease of traveling/parking. The thing I miss most is air conditioning, the heat in summer limits where you can travel/camp especially as I have 2 little dogs.

Life is change , challenges and growth. Sounds like this gives you more options, and most people feel the need of a community to tap into and feel a part of, but still able to have regular adventures. Look forward to coming along for the ride. Am sure you will make the most of whatever opportunities arise, as always.

Good morning, Catherine, I am very excited for you. I love the idea of a homebase that is near a person, or maybe people that you like to be around, that you can spend time with when you’re home.. And that you can take your truck and travel so many places, venturing further from the West Coast, if you want to. It just seems like it’s going to bring up so much more freedom for you, and personally along with the hiking, I really enjoy seeing the views from the windows of your truck as you drive through these beautiful landscapes. Thank you for all that you share with us. I wish you much love and many blessings on your adventures.

Absolutely awesome idea! I camp out of an old SUV and LOVE being nimble. Totally minimalist. But one thing I did find I needed was a canopy for shade, and its also great for when it's raining

Do what I did; buy a duplex…half the mortgage was paid for by renters. Now it’s free and clear…and an income stream. And it has built in security…in that a renter is always on the property! That frees me up for travel, easy income, and security on the home front.
It’s funny how all the vanlifers I followed for years…have ALL bought real estate, property, started builds, rehabs, etc. and SETTLED down. Or just settled?! Anyway…I did it the opposite way…getting “home base” first.

Hi Cat--It sounds like a great change for you in so many ways. The home base for your trailer ticks off most of your boxes plus the truck camper will provide more flexibility and peace of mind while your camper trailer is in a safe place. Look forward to watching future episodes in your brand new truck camper! 💚🐦🛻🏕🏔🏞

I understand the desire for a home base, as I have one also. However, as an owner of a truck camper who has put 150 K miles on it since retiring almost 20 years ago, I’m really surprised you didn’t choose that over a shell. You’ve already had the experience of traveling in a TC. Obviously, though, if your shell doesn’t work out, you can always switch to a TC. I really enjoy your videos. Good luck with your new rig and safe travels!

In 2022 a trip to Alaska in a pick up with camper shell was a highlight for our senior years. We loved the efficiency of a shell for living but found a motel every fourth night for a shower. We used a “ truck tarp” to extend the cooking and shade area off the tail gate. Enjoy your new efficient way to travel.

We are a territorial, as well as a social species. The need for a familiar and convenient plase to be is as important as the need to be with others of our kind, so the need for a semi-permanent location is contained in our genes. Best of luck and kind fortune. Stay well & safe; we all look forward to your continuing adventures. Cheers.❤

I am so excited for you Cat !!! I think this will be a great change. We are currently on my first travel nurse assignment. We set up our travel trailer as our "home base" and we have been exploring 2-3 hours away. Finding motels & Airbnb are quite expensive; even for a couple of days at a time. So we are considering some type of exploration alternative. Have thought about a little tow trailer (example Hiker squaredrop), rooftop tent, or just a good ground tent. There are so many options. Just depends on what your needs are at the time. I am like you....like to think it thru a little bit. However when an opportunity comes about that you have been pondering (such as a home base), then I agree....jump on it. 6 months is nothing to commit to. I am looking forward to your future adventures.
