  • The Core Knowledge Unit one on World Rivers prepares students to use maps and globes to locate the continents, major oceans, and important world rivers. Students explore the benefits and dangers of rivers. They learn why ancient civilizations and modern cities were established near rivers, and how rivers are often associated with major historical events.
To encourage my boys and to prepare them to study this Unit I took them on a trip to the Foss Waterway Seaport in our local area that sit off from one of the one major oceans that will be learned within the unit, The Pacific Ocean. Inside the museum they got the opportunity to explore the story of The Pacific Northwest Region, one artifact at a time. They were introduce to the story of the Puyallup tribe and their relationship with salmon as well as view the canoes that were used to paddle the length of local inlets and seas. They were able to observe and experiment with the hand built Foss rowboats as they read the story of Thea Foss, a Norwegian immigrant who built the largest tug boat industry in the world, and see the train exhibit of a freight train roll past on the same tracks that were used in the 1800s to off-load wheat.
