Monterrey is where Cass Elliot was in the audience. She was wearing sunglasses, shaking her head, & saying "Wow". My all-time favorite Joplin songs are "Turtle Blues" & "Little Girl Blues". From what I understand, Joplin recorded one take of "Turtle Blues" & was supposed to come back the next day to tweak the recording. She never made it back into the studio because she left us, for good. Listen to that recording & tell me it's not one of her best songs ever.
What a tragic member of the 27 club. She had such a split personality -- on the one hand, she could absolutely transfix a crowd of tens of thousands with her gigantic stage presence. But off stage she was very soft-spoken and suffered from crippling self-doubt and insecurity.

I grew up listening to my Dad singing this ( & other tunes) in the style of Paul Robeson, Dad's voice was as deep. My parents love of music, the family singing around the piano, played by Mum who was self taught, led to me loving so many types of music, & several versions of this tune.
