Nice to see De Gea get a bit of recognition. Truth is he’s looked like his old self for a good while now, despite United looking allergic to keeping clean sheets. You could put prime Yashin behind an absolute lemon like Maguire and he’d still get hammered on occasion. Seen loads of people say the Manchester derby was worse for United than the Liverpool game, and that’s because that derby City could’ve scored 10 if it wasn’t for De Gea
And with performances improving, it seems to make no sense to not get that recognition again.
Just a reminder that De Gea won the Golden Glove with Phil Jones and Smalling as the centre back
@@bobboyboy8305 never forget when de Gea was going to win the golden glove on the last day in 15-16 until Smalling scored an own goal in the last few minutes of the final match day lmao

I think Kasper Schmeichel deserves a very big honorable mention!
Otherwise great video, love to see the rest this series
Absolutely. I think it's a combination of him always being compared to Peter and the fact that he's never been a regular at a big club that keeps him out from lists like this. Class keeper none the less
Totally agree
@@minnumseerrund and he is even better for the national team.
He has a very high level and he makes some of the best saves in the league but he’s prone to an error more than other top keepers
I’m not sure if this is fact but him and his dad are the only father and son duo that I can think of that have both won a Premier League title playing in goal. That’s pretty impressive considering who his dad is 😅
As a Man Utd fan, we were blessed to have some of the best keepers the sport has ever seen. Between Schmeichel, De Gea and VDS, it’s a really tough battle for the top of the battle. I’d also say that Tim Howard was wrongly offloaded by us, since he was a pretty good keeper on his day.
He was great, but he really clicked at Everton. VDS took all the spotlight at Man Utd
Can't forget Roy Carroll
Alex Ferguson had no success after Schmeichel retired and until he got VDS… he didn’t want to make the same mistake and personally scouted De Gea
When Schmeichel left United Fergie tried so hard to get oliver kahn but he was very reluctant to leave bayern as ajax or juventus can't remember which wouldn't sell vandersarr but Howard was dropped after the Porto game when we went out of the champions league and personally I don't think he deserved dropping but who am I to question Alex Ferguson really lol
van der Sar's record in the Champions League is even more mind boggling than his record in the PL for United, he was the first Goalkeeper to reach 50 cleansheets in that competition and did so in 96 games... So that's a better ratio than a CS every other game. An all time great, might have been the Top 1 if he played his whole career or earlier in the PL for United.
Sorry...am I misunderstanding...how can he have a better ratio than a clean sheet every game?
@@gamewithgreg every other game
Peter Schmeichel was the first to ever reach 100 clean sheets in the Prem👌😊
I'm so glad I actually get to play against petr cech at the moment as he plays ice hockey in my league.
Great guy talking to players speaking to fans and posing for photos and interviews after the games.
He's been coaching ice hockey at Guildford for years helping out .
Amazing to have a guy like this involved in our sport after he finished his footy career
Hahaha no way! How is he as a hockey goalie as well? (Is it 'goaltender' in that sport btw?)
@@PilliamWilliam he retired from it i think ..spent 1 or 2 yrs there
@@PilliamWilliam its goalie , keeper ir tendie. I'm a goalie too.
He played in goal as a kid and was very good could have played pro hockey too , but chose football.
But from what I understand he always played a bit for fun when he went back home, and has been down at Guildford ice rink on the ice for over 10 years training/coaching with the juniors and seccond team as its a sport he's always loved.
If you are in the south of England he plays with Guildford pheonix nihl2 when Chelsea don't have a game on same day
@@R21king no he still plays
@@chrisdouglas1158 What days are your next few home games?
Props for Shay Given as an honourable mention. As somebody who's been a Newcastle fan for that long, I can recall him as a great keeper well up to the task of bailing out some truly dreadful defenders
He always gave 110 % for Ireland, he had the two keanes duff etc to back him up, he's a very nice fella irl
If he'd had another 3" he could have been really special. My girlfriend says the same about me, though she never saw me play. Weird.
Overrated.
Love that Jaaskelainen got a mention! Fantastic goalkeeper criminally underrated during his time in the prem
As an admittedly biased Rovers fan I was hoping that Brad Friedel might at least get an honourable mention. Somewhere in the region of 500 appearances in the Prem for four different clubs, and an absolute beast of a keeper in his prime.
Fair shout
As an Everton fan I don't think Howard deserves to be in the honourable mentions over friedel he was incredible in his prime for Blackburn
For me he's easily a top 5 GK
I too was hoping for an HM for our boy Brad but alas, no love. God knows how many points he won/saved us per season, he was immense.
Tim Flowers was excellent for you guys also.
Glad to see De Gea included, yes he's dropped off after the 2018 WC but he's stepped up again and is still saving United despite our shambolic defense
Being Gorilla glued to his line, plays a part in that shambolic defence.
It’s a joke he’s even in this list 😂
@@bri1085 yes, but that’s the only thing he could do. Someone more modern like allison, ederson or ramsdale couldn’t succeed in that team because of the shit defence.
@@philthyw why?
He's your only saving grace
Can you do a documentary on the afc Wimbledon on the nine promotions in eleven years, how they’re a fan own club and how they have a stadium in plough lane now.
The story of they lost the club, how the F A allowed that and won’t allow that anymore.
How they went up the English football leagues.
Great idea! What a great contrast to sports washing foreign government ownership of clubs or the corporate cynicism of billionaire owners.
@@gfloyd2002 i Thought it would be a good documentary type video and would get good views
What happened to the Dons needs to happens to Chelsea.
Easily one of the greatest stories in football
@@gfloyd2002 why do you even watch this?
Love the honourable mention for big Mark Schwarzer, as a Boro fan I'd argue he's out biggest ever loss when he left and in all fairness should have been at a much bigger club where he would have made that top 7 with a higher quality of defence I front of him.
He also won multiple premier leagues with Chelsea and Leicester
As an Aussie I can say Schwarzer is arguably our finest goalkeeper ever, Absolute beast for our national team at his best.
@@blinkusfishus2052 the disrespect for Brad Jones
@@liamparker6476 I guess 1 is a multiple of 1 plus you need 5 appearances to get an official winners medal, defo didn't have that many appearance in the prem for Leicester so may have officially won 0
@@someguynamedmike4766 he got the medals don't know if that got changed 🤷♂️
Cech is legendary what a goalkeeper
Good to see Neville Southall get the recognition here. People these days can forget football existed before 1992, he tops this list in his prime for sure.
When I was at primary school, I'd always watch him and love the fact that he was always the muddiest player on the pitch. Goalies these days are too much into their image and their hair, Big Nev (former binman) however, would never be one of them. And that is ace.
Even as an Everton fan who had him as my boyhood hero, I think Schmeichel just pips him. Just. Pretty much solely on the one ones.
But by god he was good.
@@gentleken7864 I had the privilege to watch him train once. And he was at least as muddy then.
Brad Friedel - the premier leagues record holder for consecutive appearances and chronically underrated
I was waiting for someone to say him man. He was a great goalie
I’m glad you mentioned Joe Hart at the end and the fact he could possibly have and that #7 spot, which I think he was arguably more entitled to than Reina, but otherwise it’s the perfect top 7. Great work Alfie!
Joe heart was finished before 30 ! Unlike Reina ! And heart flopped at every club since another hyped up English average player ! Pep proved he was trash by getting rid asap!!
@@damiantheomen9892 Joe Hart began his career and peaked sooo early. He has more clean sheets than De Gea and won the golden glove 3 seasons running. He he top 6 in terms of total saves. He clearly was a better keeper just wasn’t Ederson level with his feet.
@@karangupta2329 who cares about Golden gloves Reina was the first keep to win it 3 years jn a row 05 to 08 joe heart trash keepers are meant to get better as they age not be washed up by 30 !!!!! Van der sar retired at 40 what the hell is joe hearts problem? He's trash simple reina has more clean sheets in the premiership than joe heart lol & currently playing for lazio where's joe heart oh back up keeper !!!! But joe hearts better you definitely ain't over 20 as your would remember more & if you are your football knowledge is terrible and has an English bias behind it joe hear flopped everywhere since city !!! Explain that please cause no keep falls off the map like he has you would thing he had a drug problem!!! Playing for man city made him look better than he actually was & has been exposed real football fans can clearly see this
@@damiantheomen9892 first of all he is Joe Hart. Get that right. Secondly go and watch his performance for the ages against Barca against the deadly MSN and tell me you've seen the like of Reina having better performances. There's something called a comfort zone, a home and a connection with your home. He didn't fit Pep's system as he couldn't kick the ball like Ederson. Pep appreciates ball playing keepers more than actual shot stoppers cause he knows that city have the ball 70% of the time.
When Hart was absolutely thrown away from his home, it hit him hard and couldn't adapt. He immediately went to Italy which was a very bad decision, as the language the culture everything affected him.
@@karangupta2329 lol you sounding like an arsenal fan go watch Jack Wiltshire against Barcelona! No one cares he's finished!!! While Reina Is lazio number 1 at 39 ! Playing for a top team protected joe & ! He got exposed at every club since !!!! Wheres his consistency!!!!!!! 3 good seasons then then sold & finished!!!!!! Reina left pool years ago and still Playing at a top level & he's older heart is just another overrated English player !!! Accept the facts !!! Pep exposed THE TRUST about joe average heart ! Did nothing in the game after man CITY !!!! & Flopped in Italy 🇮🇹
7:35 Amazing how much De Gea has achieved considering that according to this particular image, he's an amputee.
Why what’s he had amputated
American Here just getting into European "football". Thanks for taking the time to make all these videos. It's been like a 20 year education in a few weeks. I've watched about 30 of your videos so far. Can't seem to get enough.
Glad Tim Howard got a mention , the guy was top class and criminally underrated.
USMNT fans be like:
1. Tim Howard
2. Brad Friedel
3. Kasey Keller
4. Brad Guzan
5. Zack Steffen
6. Marcus Hahnemman
7. Jozy Altidore (not a goalkeeper per say, but was good at keeping the ball out of the back of the net)
Brad far and away better than Timmy, especially for club careers. Only recency bias to blame for people that feel otherwise.
@@jaymanning-laisne7636 yeah agree Brad was better, but a lot of USMNT fans rank Tim ahead of him when it comes to international play. I think because he had no competition so started in 2 straight world cups and got 50% more caps than Brad. Also Brad quit the international scene rather unceremoniously I think as he didn't want to compete with Kasey. Surprised Friedel isn't on this list given he holds the record for most consecutive appearances...
Tony meola
Big Nev getting some respect, one of the best keepers in the world in his prime.
You missed out Massimo Taibi... I found his stint at Man Utd absolutely hilarious!
The wknd after that our Sunday league keeper said he was gonna do a Taibi. We laughed. And he fuckin did. Carbon copy 🤦🏼♂️
The pride I have for De Gea honestly can not be understated. He is the sole reason United has stayed where we are over the past decade, i do not understand how some of our fans can not appreciate what he has done for us. I can acknowledge his on the ball skills are lacking but the legacy he has on this club should be nothing less than a club hero. He definitely should have won so much more than he did in his career, but I adore him for staying so long despite the obvious issues United has had.
Manchester United's goalkeeper history is outrageous
Glad you included Pepe Reina. I think he's pretty underrated. He's been great for Liverpool for years and If Spain hadn't had one of the greatest GK of all time in Casillas, he would've been the undoubtedly their no.1.
5:57 People often forget that just before conceding that goal, Seaman had a nasty heavy knock that he was still recovering from when Ronaldinhno scored.
Brad Friedel the only omission from the honourable mentions. But other than that, excellent list
It was hopeful of me to think that David James, one of my favourite Pompey players of all time, might end up in the top 7 but I was happy that he had an honourable mention.
Ah, Calamity James 😂
I really hope you don't end up binning this series, I'm already excited to see who makes the seven for the other positions. I imagine you would go for a best XI and squad video once you go through each position, which I imagine will be quite a tough one to put together, but besides that, I think this series would also deserve a 7 Greatest PL Managers. No doubt Ferguson would be just as predictable as Schmeichel here as number one, with Wenger and Mourinho probably around the top of the list, but it'd be interesting to see who else makes it to your seven. Great video.
Don't let Irish Guy do this series or else he'll put Mourinho seven times in his Top 7 managers lmao 🤣🤣🤣
If De Gea’s turnaround lasts for the next 4 or 5 years where he would only be 35 I would argue a case that he’s definitely the best ever in the league so he still has time on his side
Great to see Lloris not being disrespected
Good list. Not nostalgia-based like most, which is a breath of fresh air for lists on UA-cam.
Video idea for next series :
Best premier league player with respective shirt number (1-34)
Base idea :
Henry, 14
Terry, 26
Scholes, 18
Carragher, 23
Humble sensation is definitely how we'd describe you. Top Man!
Spot on Alfie. Looking forward to the next installment ! AND not 1 mention of Hull City !
Excited for this series
Mark Bosnich probably deserves an Honorable mention.. wasn't great at United and his career went off the rails due to drug addiction but during his time at Villa he was outstanding
Before watching the video I'll take a punt on:
7. David James
6. Nigel Martyn
5. David Seaman
4. David de Gea
3. Edwin van der Sar
2. Petr Cech
1. Peter Schmeichel
Close! :)
HITCSevens, please do a video about the best XI in the Premier League since 1992 in each position e.g Schmeichel, Cech in goal, Neville, Azpilicueta, Walker at right back. It would be brilliant.
How has Ben foster not been mentioned. Most PL apps, helped WBA stay in the prem for over 8 seasons. He’s such a great goalkeeper and highly underrated IMO. As a baggies fan I saw Ben foster play weekly, he was great and I think he’s got to be up there with the best prem GK’s.
I think he has the record for most saves in pl history too very underrated!
perhaps a tarnished reputation from his time at manchester united
I’m a albion fan too Harrison. Foster was average at best at albion. His best years have been at blues and Watford. For 3 seasons Myhill was better.
@@seanier3648 Sorry 😂 Yeah most saves oops
Cech was the best
Jääskeläinen was a great keeper but I also thought his parrying left him down. Quite often his great saves were parried into the path of an oncoming attacker.
Love this series
De Gea in front of Seaman? Madness! De Gea was good between 2013-2017 and in this season. Seaman was good between 1991 and 2001!
Brad Friedel absolutely deserves a shoutout on here
De Gea is still class🔥 The best player at Manu, and has been the last decade✅ We are a shambles, but Dave still Saves
State of United to have such glaringly flawed player as the best of a decade
@@bri1085 had 2 semi-flawed seasons due to confidence, he’s only human. Every other season has been arguably the best shot stopper itw, take your agenda and shove it
@@ach_u He has regressed quite a bit! He has not been the best goalkeeper for at least 4-5 seasons now. Oblak, Alisson, Ederson, Maignan etc hade all been performing better than De Gea for quite a while now!
@@pelethehedgehog9444 he's been better than anyone else this season lmao. Last 2 seasons he regressed and before that he was the best in the world and now he again is. No one else has made more saves in any league and no one else has conceded less goals than they're expected to than de gea at man utd. Ur biased and it shows
@@ach_u He's a brilliant shot stopper, I can't take that away from him. At the same time you have to acknowledge he isn't a commanding presence in his own area, he's sweeping poor, those are glaring issues for a goalie to have

New year. Same video suggestion as last year:
Day 7: Top 7 second/amateur teams in football
(Hertha BSC II which almost won the DFB Pokal, Real Madrid Castilla who lost to their first team in the spanish cup in 1980 but got into Europe, Wellington Phoenix Reserves who play in the NZ National League)
Hart has to been one of the most underrated keeper ever. And his 'downfall' was really exaggerated by media
I think Kasper Schmeichel deserved an honorable mention, he's an absolutely quality keeper.
Lloris is in this 7. People who have watched Tottenham over the years how consistently good he’s been and how underrated he now is.
its crazy to see how recently sure De Gea has had a rough dip but in 2021 he has been imo one of the best keepers in the league
De Gea this season has been back to his best. Absolutely incredible
You must be having a laugh kid? Because De Gea keep letting goals in this season.
@@David1991. your the one who must be having a laugh, all the goals he's "let in" are cos our defence is shit
@@gabrielleleese2306 Can't blame it on defenders everytime. De Gea poor performance cost United points and Ole's job as well. How many clean sheets De Gea had this season???
@@gabrielleleese2306 De Gea concede 27 goals in 21 matches. Clearly you don't know anything about football kid.
I had the pleasure of meeting Jussi Jääskeläinen and he stead for pictures and artgraph and it was great a Bolton fan and a goalkeeper
Surprised Brad Friedel wasn’t at least a honourable mention on this. Was a top keeper for over a decade and certainly better than some of the names mentioned imo
Great video as always! Could you do a video ranking the 2nd choice prem keepers this season please?
Boy, I can't wait to see this list in The Sun in a couple of days!
Too soon, Kenny. Too soon.
THAT David Seaman save against Sheffield United in the FA Cup is iconic
Brad friedel?!!!
Please more of that
Scmeichel was the reason I started watching football... an absolute legend!
Best EVER along with Buffon👌
You’ve done another top 7 players per position series…
I’d ask how many more times you’ll recycle the idea, but I can’t get enough of them!
Great video and I cannot disagree. Joe Hart certainly not the greatest but deserves an honourable mention. All honourable mentions are spot on 👏🏼
Can’t really talk on Southall because I never watched him play, and I know he was mentioned, but Joe Hart should not even be in contention for a top 5 spot in the list for me. People forget how good he was because he played before city’s proper era of dominance and played in a lacklustre England team, also with how things turned sour at the end with pep but Harts biggest downfall was being born too late and not being that good with his feet, had he been born 10 years earlier we’d be talking about one of the best keepers in prem history but he missed out due to the way keepers changed during his time. Even so I think he’s definitely top 5 at least.
Honourable mention to Paul Jones from Southampton, to get an ex stockport county player in there. Other than that spot on Alfie
Anyone else think that Edwin Van Der Sar looks like Pro skater Tony Hawk?
Sick concept
Really hope this series gets seen through because my own personal greatest premier league XI feels so dated I’ll be interested to see how many current or recent players make it into Alfie’s lists
Most likely because bar Wayne Rooney. Not a single player now is better than pre 2010.
@@michaelduckett7688 In clearly identified positions yes, sadly the hybridisation of everyone seems to mucky where you’d put someone
Can you make a video on the 7 nations most likely to become 1st time World Cup winners by the end of this century ?
Dudek deserves an honourable mention
Tbh, I think De Gea is getting back to his best this season. He's been carrying United like it's 2015. And has the highest expected goals saved ratio (7.5) in the league. Though I agree with your overall opinions.
David Seaman is a proper legend. I must be the only person who properly got into football and Arsenal because of him
Brad friedel won’t be happy if he sees this, not even a mention
Thought that it was a pretty fair top 10 - nicely spread over the life of the league as well
Peak Cech was a monster. The best I have seen in the EPL. Peak De Gea is of a similar capacity as well
Love your cotent! Keep it up👍
Pep Guardiola just ruined Jo Hart's carrier by booting him out of the club.. the same guy who was so solid in goal with cracking reflexes and dominance in the air..
Hart's distribution was terrible. He was never going to fit into Guardiola's philosophy
Joe Hart was certainly good in his day. I'll never forget him being brought in to the city team instead of Shay Given which at the time was madness. Proved to be a good decision though! Given was a cracking shot stopper too though!
For anyone saying de gea doesn’t deserve to be in this list u must be mad, without David Man Utd would’ve been relegated he holds the record for most saves in a game against arsenal surpassed schmeicels clean sheet record and won Man Utd’s player of the year for 3 yrs in a row, in that 3year period it was only him and neuer battling for the best gk and de gea was streaks ahead of him
facts
Exactly facts people forget the peak de gea of the pass and only care to look at the de gea of today. Which is still a good keeper not what he use to be:
@@Kushtah but even de gea this season has been world class, if utds defence didn’t make so many mistakes he’d have loads more clean sheets
Kasper Schmeichel deserves a honerable mention. He kept clean sheets in almost all of Denmarks qualifying games in the world cup
Great to see appreciation for the GK position! Mark Schwarzer always put in a shift!
tim howard, shay given, mark schwarzer, kasper schmichael, brad friedal for his consecutive appearances alone... i too love Jussi, Jussi and Friedal by far the 2 most under rated keepers of all time in the prem also peter spent 9 seasons in the prem because of villa and man city!!
So United signed 3 of the 4 greatest ever Prem goalkeepers for a total of £21mil.. meanwhile £72mil for Kepa
Would be good to see you on some podcasts this year Alfie, have a good one
De Gea has been sensational again this season, easily united’s best player of the season so far
Man Utd have robbed de gea of being the best ever, he has everything needed but the trophies, if he played for a title winning side everyone would consider him the best, kinda sad tbf
This is very great channel
Lloris should be in the top seven. Consistency, leadership, save % and often highest prevented xG. Great keeper.
You should do the same for Italy and Spain for the same period (since 1992) and then compare the 3 XIs
I saw Neville Southall play at Boothferry park for Torquay…. He still had it
What about Brad Friedel? Overlooked but a consistent keeper.
Most underrated XI’s off all time
As well as most overrated
Nice to hear a Middlesbrough player in the honourable mentions.😀
Think TimFlowers is a worthy honorable mention as well.
i was expecting to see brad friedel in the top seven, he wasn't even an honorable mention. dude never gets the credit he deserves.
Tim Howard was one of my favorites. Also his goal was pretty awesome. And when he also had the most saves at a World Cup is also pretty good. Probably the best USA keeper ever?!
Mmm not sure the USA has had some top keepers in the prem. And I'm a United fan and really liked him. 1st season he was amazing. But there are other American keepers who had longer better careers. Even if playing for smaller clubs.
“Humble UA-cam Sensation”
Very much indeed, Mr Potts-Harmer 😌
hope you break down the midfield into Attacking mid, box to box, defensive mid
No mention of Brad Friedel? Shocking exclusion - a stalwart at Blackburn Rovers during the years they were at the top.
Everyone while reading the title:
