  • What is the best grout cleaner for cleaning grout? A more appropriate question would be: What are the best grout cleanerS for cleaning grout because we actually need two different cleaners to properly clean ceramic tile and grout. In this video, I will explain the chemistry that makes cleaning products work, why what you use to clean your grout is not as important as how you clean your grout and I will compare a few different cleaning products to see how well they clean grout. By the time you’re done with this video grout will no longer be such a mystery.

    A very unique cleaning video because no one else explains the science and difference behind all these products which, after watching it, also makes you realise just how important it is to understand it!
    I myself have been looking for an all-purpose cleaning spray that I can use in the kitchen and the bathroom but now I understand just how impractical that is, in fact, potentially damaging to certain surfaces.
    Bonuswise, I hope I've understood this right and that is I'm assuming some form of acid will be helpful to get rid of rust spots on a bathroom towel radiator?
    Thank you, very helpful, one of those videos that I will simply remember for the rest of my life!

    Just wanted to post a user experience that might be of use to others. I did a restorative cleaning on our kitchen. In the 20+ years we've lived here it was done once about 5 years ago (and I'm certain that the guy used an acid cleaner, no alkali, and didn't seal it).
    First, your guidance was INCREDIBLE, though I did have some teething problems. My floor is a porcelain tile, "mosaic" pattern with 5 different sized tiles, 6x6 to 12x18 (lots of short grout lines) AND it is textured.
    Everything went well and the wife is happy!
    As it was in the kitchen I needed to have a very concentrated alkali solution to cut the grease. Initially I didn't and things didn't get super clean. I bumped up the concentrate, (Simple Green) which made the solution slippery, as you said it would be, and promptly fell on my ass. From this point on I was brushing the dirt out of the tile's textures on my hands and knees. I was doing this after each alkali application, the textures had trapped a lot of dirt. The Hoover's brushes didn't do much for me. I also, several times, forgot to move the Hoover from Dry to Wash 🙂. After cleaning I had some grout dark spots in a few places. I tried acid without results and discovered that the stronger alkali did the trick (should have gone with the super concentrated from the start). I was surprised how much grout residue was in the Hoover's dirty water receptacle after the acid application rinse. I thought about using a Grout Stick to apply the sealer, but with the many, many short grout lines I went with a roller bottle on my hands and knees.
    I did notice that my shoes stuck to the floor. I thought it was due to the acid interacting with the soles, but was never sure.
    All-in-all a better job than the last guy did, but honestly a ton of work, but only needed every few years. Thanks again for the excellent tutorial.

    • @HowToCleanLikeAPro
      @HowToCleanLikeAPro  Рік тому +2

      Sounds like a text book tile cleaning experience. The first alkaline cleaning is the most important step because it will cut through the grease and fat and other organic matter on the grout. Acids won’t be able to cut through it so if you don’t the organic soil off with the alkaline the acid won’t be able to make contact with the grout. When the grout lines aren’t long and straight there’s no easy easy to seal them.

    • @HowToCleanLikeAPro
      @HowToCleanLikeAPro  Рік тому +2

      You should start with an alkaline cleaner to remove any organic material from the grout before you use the Zep grout cleaner. Acidic grout cleaners must contact the grout to work and they can’t penetrate oily organic material. That’s why we start with an alkaline cleaner and then use an acidic cleaner.

    Thanks for the informative video! I am trying to clean my standup shower's tiled floor which has efflorescence coming through the grout. I tried cleaning it with diluted vinegar to no avail. I then tried using sulfamic acid crystals and warm water mixture which did nothing. Is there any product or specific acid you'd recommend to get rid of the efflorescence? I've seen mention of phosphoric acid and muriatic acid. However, I assume there may be a commercial cleaner/solution that works. For the record, I did not use an alkaline base to clean it before the vinegar treatment or the sulfamic acid treatment. I assume I should clean it with a multipurpose solution first, then an acidic, then an alkaline. Any ideas would be extremely helpful. Thank you.

    • @HowToCleanLikeAPro
      @HowToCleanLikeAPro  Рік тому

      Beats All is an alkaline cleaner so if it worked and an acid cleaner didn’t, it means that your grout was covered with organic soil that the Zep Grout Cleaner and Brightener couldn’t get through. That’s why we use alkaline cleaners to remove the organic soils first, and then clean with acidic cleaners to remove stains and inorganic soils. Now that you’ve removed the organic soil with the alkaline Beats All, clean the floor with the acidic Zep Grout Cleaner and Brightener and see what kind of results you get.

    Two questions - will this approach work on vertical tiled walls around the bathtub? Cleaning the shower with smaller tiles is such a hassle, the solution runs down so fast, would love a video. Is there an extractor that will work for vertical surfaces like tiled walls? Thanks so much for your videos. These vertical tile and grout walls are my nemesis.

    • @HowToCleanLikeAPro
      @HowToCleanLikeAPro  5 місяців тому +1

      Yes, it works on vertical surfaces, but as you mentioned, gravity makes adequate dwell time impossible. I like to use a foaming sprayer on walls because foam clings better to vertical surfaces. That's only for alkaline cleaners, though, because acidic cleaners will destroy most sprayers. I usually apply the acidic cleaner, let it dwell for a bit, then reapply it, let dwell, scrub it, and rinse it off. A showerhead on a hose works great for rinsing bathtub and shower walls.

    Curious about any scrubbing of the TILE after the first alkaline spraying. It looks like you are using the Hoover as a scrubber/extractor. Is that the only tile scrubbing you do (excluding the grout) during the entire process? I would have thought at a wet (microfiber) mopping before the first grout scrubbing would be a good idea, and perhaps again? I guess the question is at what points is the tile scrubbed and what do you use to scrub it? Again, VERY informative.

    • @HowToCleanLikeAPro
      @HowToCleanLikeAPro  Рік тому +1

      Normally I would use a rotary floor machine to scrub the whole floor but for this video I wanted to stick with things that anyone might have access to. Had there been a heavy buildup on the tiles I would have used a brush and spent some time scrubbing them. The Hoover did an adequate job on the tiles though. It’s just the grout that it can’t scrub. In most cases, though, the tiles don’t need much special attention because they’re so smooth and non-porous. After three cleanings focused on the grout the tiles can’t help but come clean too.

You may be better off hiring a professional tile and grout cleaning service. *Always start with alkaline products first.* Sealing with "water-based" sealers on tiled surfaces does not have to be applied to the grout line only. Covering both tile and grout will leave your floors looking natural with no coatings, haze, or smears, If you use solevant, high gloss, or anything other than water-based products then yes grout only.
