I had the pleasure of working at the HOPR between high school and college and there was never a dull night. From celebrities coming in nightly-Chuck Norris is an amazing tipper, Tia Tequila is a hot mess-to all sorts of wild happenings with folks who’ve enjoyed a martini or two over their limit, there was always some unbelievable story that I got to go home with. Slowest night while I was there was just shy of 200 covers and the busiest were 4th of July and Fathers Day which came in around 1,500. A true SF institution.

HOPR is truly the BEST place for prime rib. bar none. Every single time I have eaten there the service was spectacular, the food was the best prime rib I’ve ever eaten. I can describe it as a succulent VELVETY piece of meat. It has just enough texture to let you know that you are eating meat. But so tender, soft, and smooth that it melts in your mouth. I always get the King cut and don’t forget to ask for a “second serving” that they will cut you when you order it. Basically, if you eat it all, you get another thin slice. This is number 1 place where you should eat while in SF. But make reservations early. You’ve been warned. Enjoy.

Honestly if you ever do get the chance you MUST go here. By far the best prime rib I've ever had. It of course is a bit pricey but it is such a great experience.

I've been a regular here for 30+ years, and each visit feels as special as the first. We make reservations at least once a year.
We've celebrated birthdays, anniversaries, and everything in between. House of Prime Rib (HOPR) is a San Francisco icon, likely enduring for many more years. The prime rib is a standout, and the salad is also exceptional-apparently, it takes a week to make. They even sell the salad seasoning!
HOPR always brings back cherished memories with family and friends.
After trying their prime rib, no other restaurant comes close to the quality and attention to detail as HOPR!

I've had the pleasure of eating at this restaurant a couple times in my life, and as a huge fan of classic prime rib I can say I sure miss this place. I still remember the first time I went I was maybe 19? And when I saw the cut of meat they gave me and my family my jaw was on the floor. I mean we're talking like 2 inches thick at least? As they said they do one thing but they do it extremely well. Also, their gravy doesn't get enough props I don't think. Absolutely delicious as well.

My first visit to HOPR was in 1965. I was five years old and immediately smitten. My mother and grandmother had been going there from day one. Every year after it was an annual celebration. Unfortunately we have moved out of state and after over fifty glorious years we can now only relive the memories. For those unfamiliar, HOPR is far more than just a perfect masterpiece of carnivore passion. The attention to every aspect from perfect Yorkshire pudding and dreamy creamed spinach to table side professionalism and subtle showmanship are it’s trademark. We miss the many times chef Jose carved for us. As well a shout out to Steven. You were not the first but you carried on, on the shoulders of another premiere host. To the bar staff as well….make me a martini in those shakers and I will imagine it from here. Best regards

We dry age primal cuts at home for about a week, too. Makes a huge difference in the flavor and texture of the meat.

The salt blanket method I think is French. Usually it’s done with fish to lock in moisture

I can't see an article on the HOPR without mentioning their longtime Maitre D, Gus Stathis, whom we sadly lost a few years back. Gus truly was part of the HOPR experience. I still enjoy going here to eat, but I do miss Gus' presence. The House of Prime Rib is truly one of San Francisco's treasured fine restaurants.

A really nice man, and great chef who would share wisdom with me regarding cooking and the Restaurant Business.

My friend from Kansas City over here in Tokyo used to live in SF and raves about the HOPR. I am from CA and have spent lots of time if the city, lived there for a year, my best friend lives there but I haven't been! So I am definitely taking him next time I'm back.
We used to have a restaurant that reminds me of this in Modesto, CA that my wonderful stepdad Bob used to take my mom, brother, sister and me to called The Chuckwagon. It was an occasional Saturday night delight and always such a treat for us kids!
