We didn't ban Sonic so we won't ban Steve. Like any metagame in any videogame players need to adapt, and if it's so egregious that no other character is competitive anymore then you figure out some limitations on blocks that isn't too ridiculous or unfair but limits it's power

Kola getting upset by Villager and DK while MuteAce had to go through that cursed bracket is hilarious. MuteAce had endless stamina, I was really impressed by how clean he was playing even after so many sets vs ToD characters.
Kola keeps losing his cool lol. He rages about every character he loses to, now including Low Tiers while he mains Top Tiers?
Honestly, this goes to show that you cannot be "carried" that much in Ultimate, at least not nowadays (unless we talking about Steve or Kazuya). Still, it is indeed hilarious to see top tier mains rage about worse characters.

That perspective on Tweeks losses is really helpful. It feels like he’s kinda lost his stuff but he’s only losing to the best of the best. He’s not number two in the world anymore but he’s not as washed as people might say.
The year is 20QD. Steve is not only dominating, but Quandale Dingleingleton is the best player in the world. Steve’s meta is so developed, entire games are decided on who gets diamond first
Acola has placed top 2 at three tournaments back to back to back, all within three weeks.

-2nd at the Ludwig Smash Invitational (Oct 21-23rd)

That’s 3 tournaments in three different parts of the world, three vastly different competitive environments, beating top players from multiple different countries.

@@EmptyHand49 I don't care how good Steve is, he isn't anywhere close to making it to where people doing stuff like what Acola is doing are winning purely because of Steve being OP, you don't do this without being really good at the game, take note of the fact the only other Steve close to getting these kind of results is Onin, which makes sense, as he's arguably the second best Steve behind Acola, and the best Steve in the United States.
@@Mike223istaken Well then you miss the entire point. Acola nor Onin were getting the same results back before Steve was released. Unless they can prove they can win majors without Steve then they will always be considered below actual top players in terms of talent and skill.
I like how theres more story elements in these recaps now, usually the invitationals were the only ones that went from day 1 to day 3 but now seeing this in open brackets feels better.

Sadly, this is true. Mac, one of the character with less recovery, no projectiles, no gimmicks other than k.o. puch which dissapears in like 2 fking steve uptilts vs steve, one of the most unbalanced and disgusting pieces of shit we've had in smash since brawl metaknight

I strongly dislike Steve as a character, but the point about an "arms race to counter Smash's most unique character" is an interesting perspective in terms of evolving the meta: Steve isn't particularly broken in the same way that Brawl's Meta Knight was, he's just a very flexible character and that means opposing players have to find ways to approach or win neutral in increasingly creative ways.
The anime is getting spicy. It's like all rivalries stop to fight the upcoming Steveageddon, on some Marvel shit here.
I think the more Steve gets optimized, the harder this will get and the more broken Steve will look. Yes players are catching up with counterplay, but it looks like he has so much left in the tank in terms of tech and even the best Steves aren't doing the most optimal combos consistently.
@@shepardice3775 true but it depends how much of that gas left in the tank is useful, hell ICs have more tech than tournament placements and all of it is pretty cool but unrealistic. I think the counter play will eventually evolve past Steve’s “New” tech soon, you don’t think every top player is skriming the hell out Steve? Acola is the only Steve player I would have serious doubts that we can catch simply because he’s a very good player and pilots the the best character in the game, unlike some other who are carried by his braindead game play
Even if counterplaying Steve to make it 50 50 is possible long term - he is much much harder to play against than to play with.
Combine that with the fact that every non Steve has to grind that much up disproportionally much while also keeping up with other matchups, it simply isnt fair and shouldnt be kept around.

@@FloetryFox88 There is only so much ChunkyKong can do with DK. Sparg0 is a good player but that doesn't mean Cloud/Pyra/mythra's recovery gets better. Light is an excellent fox player with good tools but his recovery is exploitable. Is it Sparg0 and Lights fault that the characters they pilot have a bad recovery? No. DK is just to limited on what he can do.

Everyone wants to cry out to ban Steve without admitting that all of these "carried" players are consistently getting high placements at majors. If we were seeing random local players at majors getting carried by Steve I could see the argument but it's the same Steve players every weekend... Wonder why that is.

Steve is not broken he is just massively different. He is in a category of his own. He’s not like other DLC characters that fit into a category of zoners, street fighters, sword wackers, etc. Steve has a mechanic and play style that is just different. And top players have flooded to him cause of his uniqueness that makes it hard to match up against him because he requires a neutral game unlike any other character. If I added a new zoner to the game it wouldn’t change much cause you as a player have played against zoners before for years, if I add a sword person same thing. Steve is just new and people are still figuring out the matchup play style. There’s no previous character that you already have practiced against to prepare you for Steve. He’s not broken, he’s just new.

I don't particularly hate watching Steve in tournaments but as someone who enjoys the variety and balance of Ultimate I worry that Steve will make it so that previously viable mid and high tiers will slowly vanish. We'll see tho! More data may be needed.

I'm still super unconvinced that Steve needs a ban. Having watched the Brawl Metaknight and Smash 4 Bayo metas Ultimate is still looking 100x healthier.
That being said, I think "well the Steve's were highly seeded and placed as expected" isn't a good argument. If a bunch of the best players are Steve mains that's an issue in and of itself. But we're not seeing other top players really switch to Steve like we did with Bayo in Smash 4. Steve is not obviously the best counter to himself right now.
At this point, it kinda just feels like a sports radio station but for smash bros

Everyone was on stream at the Ludwig invitational: there was a secondary stream that had 4 set-up playing simultaneously.

Idk if the commentators picked for every match. They def picked for that top 16 qualifier tho, and yes - they did not pick the Gluto match on that round. But that's more because he was playing against (I think) Shuton, and Europeans are famously bad at the Olimar matchup, so Gluto kinda got destroyed by Shuton.

I need one instance of a US Steve getting a PGR win without Steve to convince me that they aren't omega carried like Smash4 Bayos.
Acola is an absolute beast, though man, that Losers finals set was a heart breaker for Mute, I was really rooting for him. But that Grands set was... yeesh. Easily in the top 5 most brutal player destructions in Grands, and that's in contention with some of Leo's destructions (Frostbite 2020 and Colossel come to mind) because... lordie. Onin intentionally SDing 3 times (which, I'll be honest, I get due to the pressure and flagging mental game, I still think him as a TOP level competitor should've had more integrity and respect, but meh) was a rough look.
Makes me look forward to the Panda Cup and SWT, where we can see the meteorically rising Japanese Prince and the reigning World King go up against each other again because at this point, that's gonna be the two tournaments that decide the rankings.

It's sorta frustrating that Steve has no hard counter in this game. Kazuya gets decimated by a good Inking or Peach, Sephiroth hates rushdown like Mario and Roy, and Aegis can't deal with people with longer reach than them like Marthcina and Min Min. Steve, however, can't be camped out by a Samus, rushed down by Mario, tempo'd by Byleth, or ToD'd by Kazuya/Ken. He's just a menace with no clear cut weakness like weight, speed, or reach; he can escape juggles with block or dair, make LITERAL WALLS to block projectiles, and his jab is fast enough to negate everything that isn't a literal true combo from the ground
what kazuya is scared of INKLING that character kills at like 3000% 😂
@@lokks2130 Roller beats zap punch, consistently. I've K.O.'d some of the best Kazuyas in my region because of that specific interaction, in addition to Inkling up air beating the falling drop kick.

Of course as soon as I pick up brawler they become ten times as common lol, I thought I was cool. I love seeing people finally getting over the "I don't wanna play the mii fighters" though.

No split VODs until Tuesday set our editing team back a bit (if you've ever worked in Premiere you know how awful dealing with big 8+ hour long video files can be.)
We figured out a workaround in case that happens again in the future, but that was the main reason this time.
great production as always! love hearing the usual l4st voiceover but I will say, I think l4st could work on his expressiveness a bit more, he sounds a bit flat a lot of the time but it’s enjoyable nonetheless!
