Art Of Gardening: End Of The Road Garden

- Gardening on Hornby Island has always been a big part of peoples' lives and the culture of being in nature. From ornamental gardens to food forests, Hornby residents do it all. They also love sharing the joy their garden brings which is why we decided to showcase a handful of gardens in 2021 as a response to access limitations due to COVID-19.
Eva grew up in Sweden indifferent to all things gardening. Living in Saskatchewan and summering on Hornby for 25 years precluded, she thought, gardening at either locale. Only retiring to Hornby in 2005 opened her eyes to gardening as a joy, challenge, solace and a never ending opportunity for growth on her family’s barren acres in the middle of the forest. In 2017, she opened her garden to visitors in order to benefit the Hornby Island Cats Spay and Neuter Program, as well as hoping others would be inspired by the possibilities evidently abundant even in a challenging environment.

Eva's garden is absolutely beautiful! She and it are the inspiration behind my own efforts to create a special place on my property.
Love the video and love Eva's garden! Very special!
Another place to visit. Lovely!
Wow Eva! As a former neighbour I know how challenging the soil is there. I gave up and moved! I am so impressed with what you have accomplished.
I Love this woman! “I like to go and buy a tree.” Same! My way exactly!!!
My kind of girl! “You don’t like me then I don’t like you 😂” Only the strong survive 🪴
That's my mom. Amazing memories of growing up with an artist. We would sometimes drive in the country in an old GMC truck in eastern Ontario and Quebec along the Ottawa River where my mom would find an old stone house to sketch and we would be running around exploring the area.
What a pleasure and a joy to watch! I have had the privilege of being at Ewa’s home on Hornby, together with my husband Alessandro. We miss all of the lovely cat, dog and garden photos! Warm regards to you and Kurt and the animals from Venice, God Bless!
I’m thrilled to have found your garden gems. 🌿💚
What a wisdom! That’s a lot of work; no, it’s a lot of JOY! This could be applied to many aspects of our life.
Despair! I love that this lovely, peaceful garden came out initially from despair. It truly is a wonderful garden to wander about with little surprises. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on gardening, Eva. It is inspiring.
Very well said. And that reminds me…it’s time for another tree. Thank you.
