    Happy Birthday, Aaron! I hope you have a lovely birthday weekend! I’m so glad you’re reading T. Kingfisher too. And I agree that her language is much more accessible than Poe’s, even though she still creates that older, gothic vibe.

    Ann Novela got the book, I Who Have Never Known Men, trending. She's quite the trendsetter on UA-cam. If she recommends a book it's best people listen 😊

      I saw that she had the oldest review. She is so great with translated books I'm not surprised!

    Happy, Happy Birthday!!
    I just bought a copy of I Who Have Never Known Men along with a few other books for my sister for her bday. It sounds like her type of a book. I haven’t read it yet, but maybe I need to pick up a copy for myself also. It seems to be popular with a wide range of reader which is why it caught my attention.
    I’m a huge Le Guin fan. Read a good chunk of her stuff including Always Coming Home. It’s not a favorite, but I really liked it. Especially because of the women in that story. That book and Le Guin in general, made me realize that I quite look forward to being an old (and hopefully wise) woman someday. Haha. I often think of rereading that book. Definitely worth a read.

      I love Leguin's stuff she wrote as an older woman, not enough SFF has older characters. I Who Have Never Known Men very much fits that bill too.

    Happy birthday! A Wrinkle In Time is such a nostalgia read for me. I hope you enjoy it. So happy to hear that you enjoyed I Who Have Never Known Men. It was one of my top books of last year and it was just so thought-provoking. (I might be wrong, but I think it was only recently translated. Seems like there is a recent trend of translating previously published popular books in other languages) Sedaris is always solid.

    • @AaronReadABook
      @AaronReadABook  3 місяці тому

      Thanks! It was translated in 1997 originally, but the translator has revised her translation twice, that's why it seems weird to me. I know MJ has done a read-along of it recently so maybe that's why I keep hearing about it all of a sudden, I'm glad it is getting appreciated though as it really is a great book.

      @@AaronReadABook ahh good to know. I had no idea MJ did a read a long of it, but I had been seeing it pop up a lot last year. I saw it on a recommendation from Shelly Swearingen sometime in the fall last year.

    Michel Faber always has such different ideas, that cover is a stunner!
    Always Coming Home is supposed to be one of Le Guins weirdest books, definitely a lot of people struggle with it compared to her usually minimalist style. I think it likely comes out of her anthropological interests.
    Hurray for Tehanu! Old lady books 😅
    I think Emily Fox randomly picked up I Who Have Never Known Men and made it go viral last year, she seemed to have been the start of it making the rounds on booktube and then it was everywhere.

    • @AaronReadABook
      @AaronReadABook  3 місяці тому

      Yeah, I think Le Guin is always adding a bit of anthropology but with this one she seems to have gone all in. I never watch the big booktubers but it's cool that they have that ability to bring something into the public eye. I really like the backlisted podcast, but I imagine it doesn't help much.

    I’ve recently read I Who Have Never Known Men but had no idea it was written that long ago. Genuinely thought it was a recent publication. So interesting. The genesis of the popularity of this book being uncertain is kind of fitting.

      I did too when I bought it, because it's popped up so much recently. Hopefully it means more of her works are translated as I think only one other one has been.

    Happy Birthday! I've noticed some other BookTubers have birthdays about this time as well (Gavin at Genre Books I think and I can't remember the others.) A Wrinkle in Time is actually the first volume in a set of 5.
    For some reason, I decided I need to read the Earthsea cycle, so I found the first four volumes on ebay for a good price. I also ended up getting a collection of Muriel Spark's novels in 2 volumes. I really do need to stop shopping late at night...

    • @AaronReadABook
      @AaronReadABook  3 місяці тому

      Earthsea is so great. Book 1 is a children's book and book 4 is an old person book so they vary quite a lot, book 1 was her debut too. I had no idea Wrinkle in Time was a series 😂

    Happy birthday mate!!!!!!! - yeah i have talked about Nod on my channel. Love the book haul and love the mention of "Always Coming Home". It's sometimes in the racks in FOPP for 2 for £6 cos they put a bunch of masterworks in those racks....we should both go to London together in the Summer Aaron!! :D

    happy belated birthday🥳 i haven't heard one bad thing about "i who have never known men" im going to have to join y'all and buy it. When stuff like this happens, like an old book suddenly gets popular for no reason my little conspiracy brain thinks we're unknowing participants in a social experiment lol. but a good book is a good book so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

      It's weird isn't it. I suggested it to my colleagues at work who have a book club and they had just read it anyway, and they have no idea what booktube is. It is so good though, everyone recommends it to everyone else.
