Terrific job with this lesson and video. Thank you from a 71 year old who remembers when this song first came out and how much I loved it then as much as now.
This is a good one.The strumming just struck me as being very Buddy Hollie influenced and shows how excellent of a rhythm player Lennon was. Thanks for another great video.
First time I heard this song I actually cried. I don't know if it was the beautiful melody or the words. I think it was both. As a hobbyist songwriter I can't even get close to writing a song this well put together. Production pieces yes but songs are the hardest by far.
Love this ! I remember as a kid trying to emulate John's rhythm patterns and I could never get my head round thinking about down, down, down ups etc... but I had a friend who was a little more advanced than me and said you gotta get your ' janga jangas' right mate ! Since then I always worked it out that way - e.g. jang jang janga, janga janga de jang , lol. Anyways thanks JJ 😊
Big fan of your videos and especially when you sing along. Makes it easier to follow the structure. Great lesson here. Always liked the J200, too. Thanks.
Allways wished this song was longer. Thanks JJ another one that shows Lennon's outstanding Rhythm Playing ( yours To ) I think this could have been a hit single except they had too many great songs at the same time. Your the best JJ
John would never have allowed this to be released as a single. He hated the lyrics, he thought the rhyming was a little over the top. I think it's brilliant, though.
@@jamesjames9275 Yes JJ just like ( Run for your life ) Its only Love is a very catchy tune that John thought had throw away lyrics . I thought both were very unique songs. And also very good. It's only love in my top 50 Beatle songs. Your Amazing Mr. Carson
I loved this song from the first hearing. Was sad to learn that Lennon hated it. A pleasing progression -- especially the F (IV of IV). That "one of those chords that leads to something" is an augmented chord, in this case a V(aug). Indeed augmented chords push you even more than dominant chords to a chord four steps higher -- in this case from D to G. The impelling comes from raising SOL to SOL# making you want to go up another half-step to LA which is comfortably MI of the destination chord. I think Lennon's criticism of the piece is about the lyrics (which I find clever) not the tune since he used the same progression in For the Benefit of Mr. Kite. (Pointed out to me by Mike Pachelli). Good lesson about strumming.
Awesome, your the best on youtube , i see your capitols jersey ,they got mantha from our Det Red Wings and we got Vrana good trade for both teams , Vrana four goal game last night , picks and pucks great combo , keep on rockin.
Excellent as always Mr JJ! ! On the British album on this one the capo is on the 5th fret!! I have read before that the American Capitol records rushed some of these albums hence, altered the original key by speeding up the tapes. Unlike, the British ones!! Thanks for sharing!! Take care!! 👍 👍 🎸 🎸
Why is it everytime i use capo I want to put my index finger on top of it. It's like a magnet. Great lesson!. Lennon's best melodies written in 1965,6!
@James James.....love you man....I have been watching your videos for years....on the recording on this song, I have always thought I heard a little bit of 12 string underneath....was wondering what you thought of this possibility? I have never been sure, and I am probably wrong. It also may be that they double tracked John's 6 string to make it sound thicker. Your videos have always been amazing....thank you so much for all of your years of work. I appreciate it.
That was John's Hootenany, a cheapish German guitar that he had a love/hate relationship with. It appears on screen during "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away" in the "Help" movie. Check it out...
Another great lesson JJ, Did you know that before it was given the final title of "It's only Love" it was referred to as "That's a Nice Hat". That is my 2 cents contribution to your lesson...
When you are strumming, does the flesh on your strumming hand ever touch the strings or is it completely the pick? That happens to me sometimes, just wondering. Thanks
Terrific job with this lesson and video. Thank you from a 71 year old who remembers when this song first came out and how much I loved it then as much as now.
This is definitely one that captures their brilliance. What a melody!
It was on Rubber Soul on the US release and Help in the UK.
This is a good one.The strumming just struck me as being very Buddy Hollie influenced and shows how excellent of a rhythm player Lennon was. Thanks for another great video.
Just another terrific song that’s really held up well. Always loved that high note John hit at the end.
Unless you're singing it too. That note is a real stretch for me!
Just make it in falsetto. John did so...

This looks another fun one to learn, nice melody and great strumming, Thanks again JJ
Good vocals James!
Great run through. One of the many simple arrangements that somehow still sounds fresh after thousands of listenings.
Big fan of your videos and especially when you sing along. Makes it easier to follow the structure. Great lesson here. Always liked the J200, too. Thanks.
Re the strumming. Every Beatles song has nuanced strumming and syncopation. They were amazing

@@jamesjames9275 I agree completely. This was my favorite Rubber Soul (US) song. George plays a wonderful lead in the back of the mix, too.

Thanks for these very practical guitar lessons. Glad to see you back.
You couldn't stay in that lower register for too long.. you broke out the high stuff! Very pleased. (Good guitar playing too)
Simple chords but genius melody!
Excellent lesson my friend. Now I got it. Congratulations.
Great tone from that Jumbo! Super kudos for you acute ear and excellent jersey choice.
GO C A P S!
Nice. I always played this in C to Am.
You're doing great man!

Your a top bloke and thank you so much for the time you take to make these vids, very much appreciated...

Well done, and thanks for sharing!
Wow. Thank you. A lot of fun to learn and to play.
I never heard that D augmented chord. Really crazy all the cool stuff the Beatles did
Excellent
Thanks for this one. : ) Never understood why John hated it so much, especially considering his fantastic vocal.
He hated the lyrics

Yes, I think there's a 12 deeper in the mix (George?). You can hear it better on the outtakes.
That was John's Hootenany, a cheapish German guitar that he had a love/hate relationship with. It appears on screen during "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away" in the "Help" movie. Check it out...
i've been working on this one, thnx for the help.
The D chord where you move from A to A# is a D Augmented Chord. D F# A for D chord become D F# A# as you raise the fifth a half a step.
correct "D aug"
Amazing chord changes
Another great lesson JJ, Did you know that before it was given the final title of "It's only Love" it was referred to as "That's a Nice Hat". That is my 2 cents contribution to your lesson...
awesome
Sounding good …nice strumming …Gibson sounds great with the capo…
Go Caps! Great lesson
Great lesson thanks. What thickness is your pick on this one? I'm constantly experimenting with that, for a good strumming, picking combination.
The chord after that D shape is a Daug.
I think it goes C - Dsus4 - Dsus2 and back to D before you go to that beatle chord
D aug relatif to the capot(or Gaug without capot)
I agree, it has a Spanish feel to it..
When you are strumming, does the flesh on your strumming hand ever touch the strings or is it completely the pick? That happens to me sometimes, just wondering. Thanks
Sometimes it does, but that's usually when I intend to do it.
Never knew they used a capo for this one
Me neither - and thanks to the amazing JJ, now I know. Thanks JJ, you are second to none on the Internet!
That song has the same riff and melody as the Benefit for Mr kite in one part. If you're going to Rip someone off , might as well be yourself.
Can you tell me at what fret he is using the capo
K..I just replaced my strings..I still don't fit your 4th capo sound, studio sound of this song!! Should I go and purchase a Gibson?
The tuning is strange, but indeed it matches what I hear in the original. I suspect George Martin sped-up the tempo upon mixing?
From the UK Help! That is correct.
it is little bit more like strumming san ukulele
I think your tempo and your strumming is too fast. Not by much but just a little too fast.
I’ll try to do better next time.
