Even if you don’t learn theory in a specific way, just by playing you start to learn theory without realizing it
Those two “lies” are often based on a misunderstanding of what theory is
It’s merely the codification of what people do when they play music and try to communicate it with others.
As for not playing songs exactly like the record, bands often don’t play their own songs the same as the record, and it’s also more fun to do your own twist on things.

Hi Mark, you are spot on with #4 in my opinion. I would spend months trying to duplicate a song note for note and got so frustrated. I finally started just getting the gist of the song and doing basic solos that were good enough and my playing grew exponentially. Occasionally I will go back once I can play a song and try to fill in the exact nuances a little at a time. But playing, not duplicating, is my goal….and enjoyment.

Exactly! It's easy to get so wrapped up in playing like someone else. Thanks Jim!

I have a bachelors in music. But my guitar playing SUCKS!!! In my defense, i was a horn player and it sucked too. Theory is great, but even then,……..just because you know it, doesn’t make you a writer like Macca or a player like Hendrix.

Aw man, I bet you play better than you're letting on, but ... definitely just knowing theory doesn't confer the ability to play great. I have a degree in Electrical Engineering ... couldn't fix a toaster to save my life!

Mark. You are one of the most positive inspirational instructors online! I love your positive encouragement and enthusiasm! I do have a request. Is there any chance you could do an instructional video on Van Halen’s “Dreams”? There are quite a few lessons on the intros, outros and leads. Also? Quite a few covers of the song as well. However, there are very few lessons of the Rhythm chorus. There are so many chord voicings in that song! I can’t pick them up from watching the covers. Any chance you can use your talents to craft a lesson on it?😊 I know it would be super popular. I only ask you to do this if it’s something you would enjoy doing! Thanks for all of your fabulous videos! I’ve learned so much from you! It amazes me that a guy with your talent is always so humble and encouraging to those of us who are much less gifted. Thanks a million brother!

Mark, try finding a bunch of examples of pop songs/rock songs that use modal pockets to make a lesson about. Also you can make lessons about when the beatles used PIVOT CHORDS to change keys. Both of these are theory based lessons

In my opinion the best guitar teachers are the ones that can go hands-on with their students as opposed to those that write something up on the chalkboard in the studio and say here this is how it works now you try it😂 in the 80s when I was coming up guitar teachers were quite petty and competitive with one another and were nowhere even close to a good UA-cam guitar teacher like Mark!

I think learning to play the major scale & relative minors & all the modes within them & play them in any key has given me a great knowledge of the fretboard & is great motor skills for my fingers but its not everything bending & sliding hammer ons pull offs etc . & playing with feeling & passion are everything when it comes to guitar playing bending notes is one of the hardest things to master but ive always played from my heart & never had anything pre planned for a solo i love to improvise and thats when the best solos come about in my opinion but also I try to communicate with whomever I'm playing with and what it calls for like a good conversation it's very important to listen to what else is going on

I'm not against theory. Not at all. But it's a thinking trap I've seen people fall into. "If I just learn this scale (chord, arpeggio, lick, chord substitutions, extensions, etc.) all over the neck then I'll be able to really play." It doesn't work that way. At the end of the day you have to be able to use the knowledge or be content with merely knowing it.

You may not know it Mark but you're a natural chicken picker! Don't be insulted! You can still play SRV, EVH, Santana, etc. Just be proud to be included in the genre of Albert Lee, Josh Smith, Brent Mason, hell - I've heard Koch stumble into complete Led Zeppelin leads; lol. You had the Paul sounding like a Tele; maby the slap back delay and compression? 🤘

The two most important things for learning lead guitar are playing through a real amp and playing live with a band.

I absolutely despise it when you have people like Eddie Vedder say stuff like, "I don't know how to play guitar." Because I'm over here like, "Bro, you've had multiple hit songs for like 30 years. You know damn well how to play guitar."

I hear you. I heard Neil Young once on an interview give a great answer to "Are you a good guitar player?" (or something similar). He basically said, technically, no. He heard someone early on who had it all together and thought, "I'll never play like that." But then he said, "I decided to take what I *did* know and go and play it as deeply as I could." I think that sums up his playing well. I think he's pretty darn good at getting a point across, but no guitarist listening to him is ever going to say, "man, look at those fingers fly!" But his opening solo on Cortez the Killer puts me in the zone every time. I don't think many players could've created it.
