    The black falcons are the most iconic faction, in my opinion. Because they were the longest lasting. They've more or less always been in production. They were produced solidly from 1984 to the end of 1995. Thats 12 years. Then in 2001 and 2002 they were available again in re-release sets. Then in 2005 as an emblem only. In 2009 the minifigures were made available again. 2012 saw the jousting set, which ran all the way until 2015. Then they became available again in 2021 and are still available in 2022. So in the last 36 years, they've been available for 22 of them at least. Probably longer. I'm not sure of the official retirement date of the 2002 castle and 2009 minifigures. In fact, there is no child who didn't get the opportunity to own some during their childhood. We get quite nostalgic over them, but really, there's not been many times when we couldn't get hold of them.

    These were some of my favorite lego castle sets. I always sort of had a storyline in my head as a kid that I know I would periodically add to as an adult, or at least definitely clarify as an adult.
    The lego castle line starts during a period after a fallen empire. The kingdom existed, but the different factions mainly ran their respective areas and sometimes clashed with each other, over territory. The Black Falcons and Crusaders lived near each other. The forest men were people who lived outside the law, which they viewed as illegitimate. They lived in hide outs but would steal from both the Crusaders and Black Falcons. The Black Falcons and Crusaders were closely tied to the royalty though and would often be on the same side of a conflict. For fans of the Legends of the Five Rings universe, the Black Falcons were similar to the Crane Clan and the Crusaders were similar to the Lion.
    A third major faction, the Black Knights (We called them the Dungeon Masters) was a bit removed and was a local warlord building up an army that would later rival them both. They were much more aggressive and despotic than the other two. The Wolfpack were groups of peasants who were splitting off becoming their own thing, similar to the Forest men. This was a period of increasing instability in the Kingdom.
    The Black Knights were not a totally unified group, A small group of the Black Knights leave their castles for some mission and discover magic. One of them, Majisto, starts a new order using his magical powers. These Dragon Masters are a small faction made up of former Dungeon Masters, some Black Falcons, and some peasants. This magic brings further instability to the Kingdom.
    The next era was the Royal Knights, they were made primarily of the most loyal Black Falcons and Crusaders as they attempted to return the power to the King. The main issue was these different factions, the forestmen and Wolf Pack as being pissed off peasant groups, and this magic wielder, Majisto. The Dark Forest was just a continuation of the theme of societal decay. Finally, the Wolf Pack and other peasant groups discovered magic of their own and became the Fright Knights. This all resulted in a huge war which ended the era. The Knights Kingdom took place a few hundred years later.
    When I was a kid, Dark Forest was were I stepped off but I still had the magazine come to my house and could see the fight knights.

    • @Scott89878
      @Scott89878 3 місяці тому

      I kind of consider the Fright Knights to be the final chapter of the classic castle era. I had bought the castle, but I was like in high school and the last major castle sets I gotten before that was dragon masters.

    • @riley_oneill
      @riley_oneill 3 місяці тому

      @@Scott89878 Yeah. I see the Crusader-Black Falcons era going all the way to the Fright Knights Era and then ending.
      However, I also think this can be from Time Travel. The Time Cruisers came out around that time, and stuff that happened after the release of that set could be in alternate timelines. So all the later gen post 90s Castle was an alternate timeline to what we saw.

    Previously, the Black Falcons were the smallest uniformed military faction in my LEGO Castle collection at only two soldiers, but with the recent sets and build-a-minifigure parts, they now number as one of my largest forces.
    My fan theory as to the red heraldry is that they are the forces of a different regional militia under the same kingdom. Perhaps two children of the ruler from the 1980s line now rule as a diarchy, each with their own forces, but largely united, hence the mostly unchanged crest.

    Is there a reason why the black knights, royal knights, and crusaders had the same color's of red white and blue because other then the shield it's sometimes confusing to tell the differences

    I really loved your video!, I read "The LEGO Black Falcons: an unofficial fan history
    By Bobby Martin" It sheds some more insight on the relationships between the Black Falcons and the other factions in the old Lego castle theme. It's pretty fun, and I suspect the set designers do have a similar lore behind our black and blue boys

    Excellent video. I’d pretty much come to the conclusion that the Black Falcons and Crusades are sometimes friends and sometimes foes. Much probably depends on who the reigning monarch is and whether any non aggression pacts or even pacts of alliance are in effect. Any truce could end up with both factions being on a war footing with one other due to something as simple as a noble from one faction offending a noble from the other. That’s the great thing about LEGO, you’re able to forge your own narrative if you wish.

    I think lego has so much potential with this. Like especially with a lot of its audience being adults they could give us maybe more mature content like novels, a tv show etc. Love action tho

    So happy to see another video! 🍺 I’m interested in that Build a Minifig knight, my personal thoughts are it’s some sort of faction within a faction. Perhaps it could be a special group of Falcon knights? Or maybe it’s supposed to be an Honor Guard for some important members of the Falcon Royalty? Hopefully in the future we will see more from them.

    Funny thing is as a kid, I had and still have the Black falcon fortress, the wall with battering ram, and the red/white knights post. I had only a few smaller crusader or "lions" sets. So to me they are my main faction. Other than that I had lots of forrest men and Wolf stuff. I recently got the blacksmith set and am trying to save a little to get that massive castle set. But 400euros+ is a lot for me as an adult still.

    This whole era was when i was into lego as a kid... in Australia. We did call them the Eagle Knights, and the Lion Knights. Then, (even though i bought the set called "The Black Knight",) we called them the "Dragon Knights"... which was fine and dandy until the "Dragon Masters" showed up... i kinda gave up on lego for the next 30 years after that 🤣
