I rip out a page from a book titled “Arcane Studies of Divination” and toss it into a well with my shield raised carefully in front of my body. A vision is played out before us all informing us that this video format is the future of Black Magic Craft! You must make more like this. It is your destiny!
Videos like this are inspiring. I think that puzzle encounters are an overlooked part of my gaming experience that I'd like to improve. Building terrain to better set the scene should greatly help this.
I like the way you explained how you came up for a use for the craft that you made in an earlier video. As I recall, you just made it without any plan at the time for what it was exactly. I'll be breaking out my proxxon and my Shiftinglands multisided shapes jig when I get home from our holiday.
I enjoyed this type of video, helps to get creative juices going in terms of how to implement terrain pieces for home brew... would love to see more videos!
This is a great video! I love the idea of integrating positive outcome and negative outcome in your encounter. Every thing you put on this channel is gold, keep up the good work!
Great video! I am a starting DM with a group of newbie players and would love to see more of these kind of ideas. Maybe something suited for players who are new to the game?
I love all kinds of DM content! You having set pieces you've crafted to use alongside is a fun play on sharing ideas, but I'd watch even if you didn't have props to show off! I always loving hearing about people's games!
I'd love to see more videos like this! I love watching Hank's (Runehammer) Room Design videos. Even if I don't use his exact ideas, they always inspire me to try out new things. So, yeah, I'd love if it you'd do more videos like this one, where you show us some things you've tried out in your games to help inspire other DMs.
I am excited to use this idea in a campaign, You should do more of these videos sometimes between builds or product reviews these would be excellent filler!
If you use this again look at Charms in the 5th ed DM guide (p. 228). It's a minor supernatural gift which has can be used a small amount of times then vanishes. For example they can cast Darkvision on themselves (as the spell) without using components or spell slots. After the third time using it the charm goes away.
I think this is a great idea. I think most of us have been creating along side you with your "creation" videos and would love to see ideas on how to use things we build. I've always enjoyed taking bits and pieces from others and smashing together "hybrid ideas".
If you make it into a side Series where you bring up a older build or that weeks build and set up an encounter we could just plop into our own games. It seems to be the type of DnD content that is popping off on YT rn
Love it. I will definitely try some variation of this on an up coming game. If fits in perfect with some bad modded spell casting devils I've been throwing at my PCs
First I find out you're a Death Guard player... Now I find out you're a fan of Hellraiser?! My dude! I knew there were reasons I love your personality and channel. We would totally be friends if you were in Regina!
Might be a good time to start doing a live stream campaign. With Covid trapping you at home, a Saturday afternoon or night stream might be popular on twitch and get your D&D itch scratched.
Liked it - keep going - nice to see how you use your builds and to get new DM ideas to boot! Another thing I would like to see is tutorials on how to use all the different tools and templates from shiftinglands.
I love the idea of showing your process of setting up an encounter and the demonstration of how you use your builds. I also like the way that you make the 'rules' yours. Years ago when I used to run games the guiding rule was always #1 The GM= God. #2 When in doubt see rule #1. There are times I firmly believe that you need to tailor to the people playing and to the theme of your game. Great video.
Great video as always! Love this new style of episode, would love to see more stuff like this. Out of interest are you running your own setting? If so it'd be awesome to get a look into how your world is unique to you. :)
I ran my own setting for a few years, but am currently running in the forgotten realms. But in the North Damara area that has very little established lore.
Thank you for this video. It's great not just because people can see how to incorporate props into their home games, but they could get cool ideas like the reflecting rays off the ceiling and work them into an encounter of their own. It also gives people like me a chance to give back to you, in our own ways. I am in no position to give you any constructive feedback on your crafting since I got nowhere near the skill or time to make all those beautiful props you show, but I can share some of my experience from decades of DMing random systems and parties. Try to be extra careful when you incorporate random elements into an encounter, and especially when you introduce them before a semi-major or major villain fight. Regardless how well you prepare and try to calculate every possible PC move, PCs will do PC staff and they might ending throwing you for a loop. You might end up with a PC trying to milk this, and getting lucky with 8-10 consecutive rolls. And at the same time you could have another getting unlucky with all of his/her 3 rolls. And once they proceed to the climactic battle, the first PC is able to participate and do more things while the latter PC is playing very careful and might essentially take themselves out of the fight entirely. They might end up using resources (Like Break Enchantment or a scroll or some other ability) to get rid of the bad effects that you have calculated them having when they face the villain to counter some of his abilities. Just keep in mind that all PCs deserve their 10 minute spotlight in situations like these, and if your PCs get into the mindset that they "absolutely" need these effects (cause why would you put them there if they didn't, again PCs will think/do PC staff) you might end up in a different situation than you anticipated. What I personally have seen working better, is to try to reward your PCs with bits of information that they wouldn't otherwise have a chance to find out from their research/skills/Roleplaying. If they don't have access to proper Knowledge skills or divinations, maybe solving a puzzle like that prior to the fight reveals that the villain is highly resistant to fire. Or weaker to cold. Or has some kind of mind control ability. Something that won't break the upcoming fight, as it is information that the PCs will eventually find out, but it can save precious rounds and will not leave a player feeling kinda "useless" in some way. Maybe you want to use that cool monster you had in mind but while the party casters can battle it, the fighter/rogue/barbarian or ranger lacks a silver or cold iron or proper weapon. Perhaps in the rabbles at the corner of the room is a small desecrated statue dedicated to an old forgotten good deity that the particular PC knows/worships. Cleaning it and praying in front of it might reward that PC with a blessed weapon or suddenly 10 of his arrows have silvered tips etc. Having a PC "kinda" crippled or a "bit" buffed prior to an encounter with a major villain alters the party balance in ways that might end up leaving a player satisfied and another with a bad taste in his mouth. It's another thing to have a couple bad attack rolls during a fight or a bad saving throw and another to enter the fight with a melee character slowed or a bard with speech impairment, a rogue feared etc etc. Especially if you are the type of DM that let's the dice fall where they may.
would be good to see a pic of the spells you had in mind, as a "learn by doing" type person, it's a little harder for me to imagine the abstract :) maybe just a pic uploaded to the FB comments for the video? Just a thought.
As I said at the end of the video, I put photos of my DM journal for the room including the roll table of spells I chose on my Patreon as a reward for those supporters :)
Love it. Please do more of this style video. Was thinking of doing something similar after last weeks CR episode. Someone mentioned entire bookcase being thrown in, but how would others handle that or an entire book? No effect? Multiple? Or special?
I don’t watch CR, was there a similar scenario? Our half orc fighter actually did “in character” get frustrated and confused and threw in a whole book. I decided to treat it the same as one page but you could make the effect X times more powerful if you wanted.
Only similar in the way of an extra dimensional room/library which was part of a larger “puzzle”. Same effect makes sense being the books are part of a single school. Thanks! Keep it up! Great content.
That sounds like a great encounter. I'd like to hear about your plot ideas and encounters related to your builds more often. I think it's very interesting. Thanks for the video.
Best way to start the last Friday before Christmas break. But oh wait? What's this? Schoolbuses are cancelled? Perfect way to start my Christmas holidays, a black magic craft vid and a snowday. Now I just have to convince my dad to get me a t-shirt. Merry Christmas!
@@williamleitz3551 I don't know, that campaign ended over a year ago. At the time I made those videos they weren't well received so I did not continue them.
What do you guys think of this type of room/encounter design video? Would you like these to go op semi regularly?
Super awesome!! Would definitely like these video to work into the mix of content. Keep killin it BMC.
I'd love to see these more often!
Yes more of these please
It's really neat to have some video once in a while giving us ideas on how to use the assets that you show us how to create. Thank you and merry xmas!
I would love to see more of these. Great ideas and set up

Videos like this are inspiring. I think that puzzle encounters are an overlooked part of my gaming experience that I'd like to improve. Building terrain to better set the scene should greatly help this.
I actually enjoyed this. It saw you utilize the things you make physically with the trick of the things you make as a DM mentally.
I would love to see more of these! A DM focused series while incorporating the crafts sounds interesting!
i am 100% okay with something like "from crafting to use." 10/10
Awesome encounter idea! I'm stealing this.
This video is super helpful. These kind of things are what I collect to add to dungeons and quests.
The Lament Configuration!!!! I love Hellraiser, I have Doug Bradley's autograph. It's my prized possession in my office.
I absolutely love how passionate you are about your craft and your hobby, it's so cool how much you're enjoying yourself!
This was absolutely awesome!!! I don't even play D&D (yet) but I enjoyed just listening along for the story as I was sat painting my minis 😁

That’s why it’s fun to build some random stuff without purpose. Ends up being great for something later.
I enjoyed this type of video, helps to get creative juices going in terms of how to implement terrain pieces for home brew... would love to see more videos!
I'm mostly here for the crafting, but this is nice to mix it up sometimes!

Please do this more. Helps starting dms get good ideas.
Love the idea of these random encounters that can be added to any campaign. Gonna try this!!
I watch Runehammers *room design* vids over and over. Some of my favorite ideas brew from them, this is on par with Hankerin!!! Thank you
Love it! I want to see more of these videos!!!! I do plan to use this encounter and will let you know how it goes.
Fantastic idea. There is more than just physical things to craft for games.
