Wow, Dr. Bushkova! It’s almost like you read my mind. I recently started with this new teacher who has told me to do a lot of martelé exercises to improve my bow control and right hand/arm technique. I’ve been struggling a lot and feeling depressed, but this video put a smile on my face!
Hi , thank you for this helpful video. I have a question that confused me for a long time, what's the difference between martele and staccato? I watched several videos about these two bowing but still can't get the clear answer.
Martelé is bowing - a special technique that is used on string instruments. Staccato - in its general musical meaning - is a short musical sound. An up-bow (or down-bow) staccato is yet another bowing, also a special technique. The up- or down-bow staccato IN A SLOW TEMPO is played as a series of several martelé strokes on one bow. In a fast tempo, the execution of staccato becomes quite different from martelé. Hope this clarifies your confusion.
Hi Julia! I have been taught to maintain the pressure on the bow with the index finger throughout the stroke as opposed to releasing it. The index finger sustains the pressure and is not released until the bow stops. Are there variations in the approach to Martelé among instructors?
You are quite correct - the pressure of the index finger should be maintained throughout the stroke and releasing at the moment of stopping. If I did not make it clear, it is too bad... I concentrated on showing in which way to use the index finger (muscle-wise) when I was demonstrating the several releases. No, I am not aware of the different teaching methods of martelé
@@ViolinClassUSA Thank you for your kind reply Julia. It can be a somewhat confusing with some videos (not necessarily yours). Other instructors speak of releasing the pressure but it can be unclear if the instructor is saying to release the pressure on the bow from the index finger, or if they are saying to release the pressure on the string by the movement of the bow for the stroke. I am very appreciative of your videos (especially since my instructor is Russian and emphasizes the importance of understanding the purpose and function of the different bow strokes). Thank you for the opportunity to learn and improve upon my studies!
Martelé is a bowing (technique); sforzando is an expressive dynamic. Sforzando may be played differently in different contexts, depending on the character, and could be played martelé if necessary. Most often sforzando, indeed, does Not necessitate stopping the bow.
@@ViolinClassUSA thanks professor! I’ve been learning to do this but on the whole bow and It’s really difficult to keep straight…now will try with half bow and take it from there
Thank you Julia, the visual demonstration of the index finger pressure to the bow really helped.
Your videos are dense with information and I really appreciate your gentleness in sharing traditional teachings. Thank you!

Hi Julia, I’m just starting to learn martele stroke and i wonder what is the difference between martele and accented notes?
In martelé you stop the bow; in accentuated détaché you do not stop the bow.

Between the Martele and sforzando is that the bow must not stop?

Normally use upper bow?
❤️
5 years of playing and I still can't do martelé 😭
Hello Julia, s martele is only on the half upper bow?
Yes, at first. Later, one can expand it to other parts of the bow and even the whole bow
