Being locked down around the world meant that the wildlife in some places could 'breathe' once again. Let's hope we don't mess it up on this second chance!
South Africa was also a prolific whaling nation in the Indian Ocean in the 60’s and early 70’s. Durban was a major hub. I remember they used to display a massive whaling gun/harpoon on the sea front and as kids we all would act out killing whales from it. How times have changed. For the better in this case.
Whaling is our precious culture that has been going on since BC.(Jomon Period) This is not something that other countries should criticize. Anti-whaling countries such as Australia emotionally condemned the culture. As a result, the number of whales too increased, and the number of fish they fed on decreased, and carnivorous creatures such as sharks began to appear offshore There are also species of whales that have large numbers of individuals. We should not be emotionally opposed to whaling.
@@もんふじ-d1c Whale has devestated the whale population, crashing it by 99% since the late nineteenth century. There is no need to eat them, anymore than you should eat bush meat from wild animals or dolphins or cats, dogs or rodents, when there are many varieties of farmed animals, that have been farmed sometimes for thousands of years. Are you aware that shark fishing is as cruel as whaling, both animals are caught alive and brutally slowly slaughtered, in the case of sharks, fin cut off and thrown back in the water to die and whales are harpooned, dragged on to a ship and disemboweled, dolphins meanwhile are herded together and shot at, not unlike the many massacres carried out by humans on humans? This kind of meat anyway is not really suitable for the human gut and many wild creatures can cause diseases in humans. There is also no longer any need for whale by products, due to modern technology. It's not an emotional argument, it just that whaling is a cruel pointless and out of date practice, that devastates oceanic ecosystems and could give rise to a new pathogen.
If the planet is in such a mess why is it that most days there are stories of the continued improvement in returning species across the world. Must be the planet doing something right.
Various efforts starting to show results. We fucked up, and now some of our actions to do the right thing is showing. But we are far from the goal, though.
You cut the reporter's segment off before it concluded! Anyway, I'm happy that more of these amazing creatures are continuing to survive, and hopefully thrive - like they should! *spurts" in the chat lol :)
Finally, people in the Seychelles will be able to understand what size of things the Beeb means whenever they use blue whales as a unit of measurement :p
Jim says .... Thank you so much BBCC (British Broadcasting Climate Change) for reporting this good news. It must be also due to global warming that these beautiful creatures are returning to the Indian ocean? Is it also due to climate change that whales are beaching themselves and dying in their hundreds, and not because of the thousands of wind turbines placed on the seabed, not only the pile drivers to place these casings on the seabed, but also the low frequency sounds (when the wind does blow and the blades do rotate) that destroy their sonar systems they rely on to navigate, and also chop up migratory birds and bats? Perhaps climate change and the threat of rising sea levels has caused Al Gore, Barack Obama, Bill Gates and John Kerry, to purchase multi million$ beach side residencies, and for multi corporations to invest $b in tourist industry infrastructure in the Maldives, where the highest point above sea level is just 2 feet? Don't forget either BBCC, to report the good news that, due to climate change, the Great Barrier Reef is back to it's former glory of 15 years ago, and global warming has also contributed to an increase in the polar bear population, an increase of 37 feet in the Arctic ice in 2022, and, according to NASA's own data, an increase in the greening of the planet. Thank you BBCC, and thank you climate change!
Yes indeed It's life Jim, but not as we know it. And thank you, thank you BBCC and Sir David Veggieburger so very much for showcasing nature's multitude of positive responses to peoplekind's increase in CO2 levels - it really is the gas of life. Truly wonderous to behold.
Global warming has nothing to do with these waters no longer being hunted by humans. Global warming might well take out the plankton these whales feed on globally once the global average temperature reaches some critical threshold, which will undercut the foundation of these large animals' existance.
Blue whales return to tropical haven | BBC News 2349pm 23.11.23 well, at least the news reader's happy. well done... and the whales, they'll be quite chipper. i'd like to see whales up close... they're pretty cool.. no real need to wipe them off the planet, is there?

Exactly.
Many thousands of species are extinct every year.
For most species it's going in the wrong direction.
It was a good news.. It is our duty to protect this for the next generation

Such good news, but is it really necessary to keep such a wide red band over the video, impeding the full catch of the scene?
