Awesome video brother. Glad you reminded us of your little miracle coming to the world. My wife and I really got emotional watching your video where you poured your heart out about finding out you’ll be a dad. Hope you and your family are safe, healthy and saying inside. Take care.

ok nice look. don't always agree with "code" but should have been 45% returns on both ends to prevent loose long sleeves from catching on end of hand rail. One time i agree with "code". Have a friend whose handicapped that had that happened; she was okay after word but got little bruised up.
Thank you for going through the finishing process in such great detail. I’m just learning Woodcrafting and have tried and failed miserably at this part. I subscribed!
I'd have bought two of those LED kits and put the second motion sensor at the bottom of the stairs feeding both to an OR gate but to each their own. Definitely agree with putting it at the top of the stairs if you have to pick one.
@@guelphtents4448 Your best bet might be to get a small arduino kit and tinker with the inputs and outputs. Its a bit too complicated to explain what I'm talking about on a comment but learning to use arduinos and raspberry pi should open a lot of doors.
LOL! DIY videos suck me in to CC. Get some rest and make yourself a walnut handrail in the morning haha! Thanks for watching and hope you enjoyed the video.
Is no one going to mention the paper bag he made taped to the wall to catch debris from drilling and use as a trash can? I've never seen that before. That is awesome!

Don't forget the returns at the top and bottom, they're code now. They prevent purse straps and loose clothing from getting caught and causing one to fall.
Considering the amount of weight/stress that could be at the halving joint, would a wood dowel[s] be worth the effort at the joint? Could the joint be positioned at one of the brackets for added security?
Great note Stan and I was considering a dowell if I did a standard butt joint but the halving joint is crazy strong and I have no fear of failed in the future. Thanks for watching and all the support.
I never had any luck with the LED strip lighting backing tape holding. To counter it I purchased 3M double face the same width pretty much as the strip. Stays permanently
Good question and good catch. The brackets came with the screws I used and I didn't want to change it based on Bold MFG provided the hardware for this project. This is something I will either paint of change in the future. Thanks for watching and glad you liked the project.
This hand rail is so cool. Couple of questions. How deep is the channel for the LED light strip? If you don’t have a router how would you cut out the channel for the LED light strip?
Great to hear Asher. The channel is only about a 1/4" deep and if you don't have a router I bet you could set up a jig, clamp your raining down, and run your skill saw over the top of it a couple of times. Thats if you don't have a table saw wit ha dado blade. However, you hone have to have a channel. The LED's are so thin that I just wanted a nice clean look but I didn't have to have the channel. However, you would have to work the LED's around the brackets if you didn't make a channel. Thanks for watching and hope you subscribed.
Omar!!! You Are The Man!!! Always on top of it and glad you are one that has hit that subscriber bell. Good idea by the way. Might be a fun way to get more people to think about commenting.
This looks good. I am about to install LED strip lighting to an outdoor porch railing. I was going to get mains powered LED strip, hadn't thought of battery powered. How long do the batteries last in the LED strips do you know? Also, can the LED strips be cut or joined to other strips to make different lengths?
Thanks for watching Richard and good questions. The batteries only lasted about a month at most but most likely they would last a lot longer for you since my indoor staircase most likely sees a lot more activity and movement then your outdoor railing. And yes you can cut and adjust the length if needed. Thanks again for watching and hope you subscribed.
Two items of note: 1) Does the device include an ambient light detector? 2) Batteries are always being used to power the sensor(s) albeit at lower battery consumption then when the LEDs are illuminated. The existence of an ambient light sensor should extend battery life since the LEDs won’t (shouldn’t) illuminate during the daytime.
Just on the way down Ason. I could put and led strip on both sides of the handrail but felt that the light really only comes in handy when going down the stairs. Thanks for watching and hope you enjoyed the video.
Nice video! Do you know of any outdoor lights that might do the same thing? I think when guest arrive at night it would be a cool feature. Keep up the great content.
Great to hear Jake and thanks for the suggestions. That would be a great idea and the led’s that I used are waterproof but I highly doubt the controller is. If I find one I’ll let you know.
I'm going to do mine too, but I have a question? It turns on from the top because the sensor lights it up while going down the stairs but how about when you coming up the stairs? You will need 2 sensors on both ends.
Good question Kylo and in all honesty it doesn’t bother me too much about it not turning on right away when I walk up since the sensor is pretty sensitive and it turns on once I take two steps or so. Just try to fine one that has a long batter life. This one is great but the batters don’t last for more then a month. Thanks for watching and hope you subscribed.
Great to hear and nice suggestion. I thought about that ahead of time. There is a plastic film on the LED, which works as a diffuser so the LED light comes out smooth all the way across. the handrail. Light looks perfect. Thanks for the topic.
Agreed. I am having 5 railings fabricated from sapele at a local millwork shop. Working with them on the specs. My wife is the finishing specialist, so they'll surely turn out beautiful.
How sensitive is the motion sensor given that it is recessed? How far away will it detect motion when pointing down as installed? I really like this approach and need something like this for my rear stairway.
This one is quite sensitive but it only turns on about half way when your walking up the stairwell. That’s fine in my case since I’m mainly concerned about walking down the stairs
I thought video was how to install led lights in hand rail and not how to join two pieces of wood. Maybe a separate video - like here is a link how I did that.
Nice call out and I have seen that code before. Doesn’t make much sense and since I’ve lived in this house for 10 years without a handrail I’m not going to worry too much about not having a 2” add on both ends right?! Haha. Thanks for watching!
This may be the best DIY I have encountered ... did I miss the brand of glue? My perception of glue tells me a couple dowels are called for...very nice finish ... border-line perfect?
Motion at the top of the stairs BUT not at the bottom coming back up? WHY cant a manufacturer figure that one out??? First one to make a cuttable led strip with TWO motion detectors will make millions???
