Is this Electric hot hatch, hot enough? | CUPRA BORN Review

- The name's Born, Cupra Born.
Robert might have been on a well deserved holiday driving through France and Spain but he couldn't resist stopping in Barcelona to take the super cool looking Cupra Born for a test drive.
Built in Germany using VW's MEB platform, the Cupra Born is the sporty hot hatch sister of the ID.3. From the sides they look almost identical, but the front and back are strongly stylised looking somewhat flared and angry! The Cupra is comfortable, spacious, nice to drive and, when you pop it in performance mode, it's definitely got a bit of poke.
But would we choose it over the ID.3? Do we like the copper bits scattered around the car? We're just not sure. What do you think?

If you had the choice between a VW ID.3 and the Cupra Born, which would you go for? Tell us why below....
Cupra for sure
Cybertruck
Cupra.
ID3 looks like a train from Chuggington.
The Born. In my opinion it is the most nice afordable Ev nowadays.
Cupra looks much better to me! Definitely above the ID3 on my shortlist
For the same price, i would go for this Cupra Born over iD.3.
Are they the same price?
Think the Cupra will actually be more expensive.
Standard ID.3 life starts at £30990 this is starting at about £33k.
Although there is the £2500 government grant and a £1750 finance deposit contribution on the VW and any extra discount you can squeeze. Although factory orders atm are april onwards but no-one really knows? 🤷♂️⚡💪
Every time- such a cool car
About 6:00. 'Late life crisis'. I haven't laughed this hard in a (seems like) a very long time. Do you realize what joy you bring, Robert? I'm 62 and life isn't so good lately. THANK YOU. I've been a subscriber since day one.
Yeah i laughed out loud too to that situation aswell! Love Roberts sence of humor.
Hang in there buddy it will improve to ya i hope. :)
I’ve always liked SEAT’s more aggressive styling language, the Cupra Born to me is the best looking version of this platform. Love that blue and really like the copper accents.
The production quality of the videos just keeps going up. (Well done Andy)
Many thanks 🙌🏼
What a fantastic, unique little car show this has become. The production level is really something the team can be proud of
Damn its nice to see Robert doing a full review again. Back to why I enjoyed FCS to begin with.
Shoutout to whoever on the production team chose a guitar performance of Albéniz's Leyenda! I appreciate you.
Leyenda or Asturias - In my opinion it is absolute error. Barcelona is in Catalunya, not even close to Asturias. How on Earth they did such mistake? One will never include traditional music from North Ireland when introducing product made in Scotland. Am I wrong?
@@janezscancar4178 yes, because it is music from Spain and they are British people in Spain 😁
I think you are being to picky.
@@janezscancar4178 What would you suggest instead? :)
EDIT: Wikipedia has some interesting points about the piece's history as well.
@@tiagobarreiros Agree. Thanks.
@@easkay I was to picky.
It's strange that the better VW ID4 is the Skoda Enyaq iV, and the better VW ID3 is this Cupra.
Cupra brand is supposed to be a step up from VW better materials and more power.
The better ID4 is the Audi eTron Q4
I'm REALLY looking forward to seeing what Skoda do with the ID.3 platform.
@@SDK2006b and the better Q4 is the model Y? You can get one quicker too.
@@chargeheadsuk - Not sure if the Model Y is a better car than the Q4. Better charging facilities, definitely yes
If I ever had the money to buy a proper electric car this is definetly the kind of car I would see myself drive for a long time. Just the right size, big enough to be very practical but not to big as to be a lumbering tank. And just the right amount of stying. Something to just catch your eye but not so much as to bey over flamboyant or again, impractical. This is great. More of these please, and cheaper if possible.
The quality of this video is unrivaled. Only to be matched by Robert's amazing review. Hands down the best EV channel out there!
100% agree with you Robert. Anything to move away from butt-ugly look-alike SUV styling has to be a postive move IMHO. The only thing remaining is to lower the roofline to improve total aero drag which will result in greater range.
Maybe SEAT should design a variant of the ID4 too ?
At last…another proper sized electric car…
Better design cues than an ID3…
Nice looking and not an goddamn SUV
The copper rim gives it like a fire on the wheel. Very cool
Looks like the brakes are on fire! :)
My favorite part: "Ooh! Mountains!" 🤣
Beautiful last shot of Barcelona, treed street & Cupra Born. Improved front & rear when compared to the inoffensive ID3. Born, definitely the Born. Great episode.
Ending his holiday with a car review, thus turning it into a business trip. We see you Robert 🤫
Hope his tax man doesn't see this.
Haha, I was just thinking 2 less flights for a Barcelona review - eco conscious Bobby!
Nobody needs to fly to Barcelona very disappointing lost there eco badge for me unsubscribed
@@damdog11 did they fly?
@@nagromnewo in the video he states that the camera man flew to Barcelona
Cupra stands out more from the crowd. Clever workmanship by Cameraman Andy. Come for the detailed examination of the EV, stay for the cinematic treats that Cameraman Andy provides. Well done.
I'm Spanish and hearing the intro with Asturias by Isaac Albeniz made my heart jump. It does every time.
You production quality never fails to impress! The tasteful music, combined with beautifully shot B roll - very nice!
I feel like TV nowadays can learn a thing or two from youtube channels like this one. Overall presentation meets and IMHO exceeds the likes of BBC for example.
I wish you all many years of growth and continued success!
Really like the copper over the green or blue every EV other car uses. It does look much better than the ID3. Really disappointed they didn't use physical buttons for HVAC controls. Nice review. Keep up the good work.
Props to the producers and editors of this video. Bravo. Very well done.
We have 6 VW ID3’s as staff pool car on our Data Centre project in Dublin and all staff love them albeit with a handful of niggles that VW group seem to be ignoring. The haptic buttons on the wheel and below the touchscreen drive the team mad. With Cupra’s new interpretation albeit on identical underpinnings it seems a shame they haven’t taken advantage of the feedback and made some tweaks to the user interfaces. Prefer the look of the Cupra but only just!….
My id4 is fantastic, except for the software, which drives us mental.
How are you finding Ireland’s anaemic & expensive public charging system?
@@rinnin well I’m in Scotland, which is surprisingly just about okay. But re Ireland, reminds me of rural phone boxes in the 80s. Saying that, I think there’s five more 125kwh chargers than the backward North, which lives in eternal darkness and has no use for electricity anyway.
Rumour has it that the mid-life facelift for the ID3 will dispense with those terrible slider controls and haptic buttons. Hopefully this will be true.
@@NedNew it has been confirmed
Flamenco music is typical in the south of Spain. In the north we don't kill bulls, we don't eat paellas nor dance flamenco. Otherwise gret review. Born stands for "El Born" which is a neighbourhood in Barcelona.
I do like a good rambling review - it’s like a gentle walk down a country lane, where insight and perspective (such as the SatNav tells you to go left or right) are slowly revealed in an almost apologetic manner 🙂
Hopefully Jack’s holiday is a short one 😉
How lovely can car reviews be?
Robert: Yes! :)
What a lovely little video. I hope that you enjoyed your well-earned break.
I like cupra designs. Aggressive and sharp.
I agree with Robert; looks much better than the ID.3, especially the dash… BTW: Alternative title for the video - ‘The old man and the hatch’?…:)..
Robert:"it tickles my DNA sequence", very scientific indeed, sir!
I met Robert in France a few weeks ago at a supercharger, thoroughly nice chap and we had a nice chat.
What did you talk about? "Hi, I'm a fan"?
@@موسى_7 Holiday stuff, i knew he was on a break so didn't want to talk 'shop'
As a big seat "fanboy" i have been waiting for the "el born" to show its face, now just the cupra born i can definitely say i will be buying one of these! Seat make stunning cars and they've done a top job with the born too
As a non-fanboy I reckon it's a great looking car too.
Someone will put the front motor from the ID-4 in it soon and maybe uae ether 18650 or 2700 cells in it or have primary 21700 dells(vertical) and take advantage of 18650s cell(horizontal) size to get it up near 90kw :):) There is Nissan leaf in Europe that uses Leaf cells and 2 layers of Model 3 cells above... and a conversion for Leaf`s to 18650 cell format... so anything is possible :):)
A "star" is Born?
Thanks for the review, I saw this a few months ago and it conviced me to get one. It arrived last week. So far so good, it's definetly a good car.😄
Robert I so enjoy all the information you provide. I look forward to seeing these automobiles come to the United States. They look so amazing!
I always appreciate reviews involving a seasoned car journalist’s driving on actual streets and highways commenting freely on the vehicle’s dynamics sans corporate “keepers.”
Really cool music and good sound in this video. Fun review overall. Keep it up! 🙂
finally, the main man is back into reviewing business
Bev’s all feel similar to an extent, at least in terms of power delivery in city driving. As a result, I think styling (more so than drivetrain) now has a larger impact than ever (at least since the 50’s) in terms of a car’s identity and what make it unique. Having said that, I think Seat has the superior product compared to VW’s id3, entirely as a result of styling.
It's like British Leyland but not crap.
Hmm not so sure. Maybe at similar price points. I normally drive an i3 and had a Model X last week. Very different feel.
@@leatherworkstation I wish an EV manufacturer would look at Moulton's Hydrolastic suspension (as used by BL cars from the early 60's to the 90's) superb ride, tiny use of space. Would move car design on from the clunky 'struts on every corner' that limit the shape they could be.
@@FFVoyager maybe there is something that is worse about hat design than the one we use now?
@@harsimranbansal5355 in my experience, the opposite.
Oh praise the lord....Finally a review done right.....Done by Robert....
This is the kind of content this channel needs...
Shout out to Andy, what a great job he's doing
I always, enjoy your reviews Robert. Thankyou. 👍👍👍
One of my frustrations with the new EV offerings is there seems to be a concerted effort to... "reinvent the wheel/infotainment/HVAC" controls in the most "creative way possible" with limited consideration and application of time tested and well proven good ergonomics and human factors.
No one wants to have to search for HVAC controls. And yet...
Yep often used controls should 'fall to hand' without the need to look.
Most modern cars fail.
Knobs, real buttons please!
@@jeremylister89 knobs for temp, slider for vent location, buttons for modes that if there are more than three presses required to cycle thru? Get their own button.
I think this is being rolled back a bit fortunately. (Except by Tesla)
Every driver has rejected it.
@@choddo some might think it would restrict creativity (aka stupidity), but I would have hoped there was something in mandatory UK/European standards about improving car usability to reduce risk.
I mean were have all sorts of driver assist safety systems, but nothing to stop someone spending extended periods going through screen menus/ functions.
Having nearly been wiped out by someone occupied by a screen who forgot to steer, the consequences can be death.
Sure there's a paragraph in the car handbook, but that's useless.
If you don't guard against stupidity it will occur.
It’s not just in EV’s. It seems to blight most modern car design regardless of power train.
This whole thing was very beautifully shot. Gotta hand it to you. Great job.
This is a complete id.3 killer !!! From the outside it looks better in every single angle! Inside it has also a better look, less childish… but overall it calls for the child we have inside !!
How many of this ID3 killer been manufactured and sold to the public so far?
It an ID3 in a new dress
Oh and it’s a SEAT demonstration vehicle made by VW .
@@kevinwalton4538 I understand what you mean: below it’s awesome look, it’s still a VW. But have you though that below a beautiful women or man there’s a system which is the same as any other women or man ? The car looks good, it’s going to be a success in countries which don’t have prejudice against a Spanish car. If I was given the choice I wouldn’t hesitate one second !! 😅
The UX design on the driving profiles, where it changes the side of the displayed roadway between a road a track and some grass? I love that, that's incredibly clever.
Lovely car and always lovely, high quality video! Best regards from Budapest :)
Very enjoyable video, beautiful views, and the music [chef's kiss]
This is like an ID3, but just looks better!
That 8.9 seconds to 100km/h probably makes it the slowest Cupra ever 😂
Not exactly hot, more....I've left my hot tea on the side for an hour and now its Cupra Born 🤔⚡😉
Man, VW doesn't know how to get good motor for EVs like Tesla.
@@موسى_7 I guess it's not the motor, but more the battery technology. It's not easy to draw really high amounts of power from a battery without it overheating.
Really great videography! Kudos 👍
Great review, I pick mine up a week on Saturday! Delivery was 7 months.
Another brilliant and beautifully produced episode; very enjoyable to watch. I'd take the Born over the ID3 but keen to see the price and spec comparison with EV6. I do like your soundtrack, can I get a track listing?
Very much a reminder of the One Legged Actor Audition by Derek and Clive. “Your right leg I really like but your left leg not so much” 😂😂
Great episode
Hmmm. Cupra Born or iD3? Not sure what the difference in price is/will be but if they were about the same price, I'd go for the Cupra Born I think. AWD version would be excellent.
@You Tube then you've fallen for the VW hype, was a seat el born until recently with a much cheaper price tag until vw spat their dummy out.
FIrst: Thanks for the video!
Second: Neither. A friend has the ID.4 and he is very disappointed with it. If its current problems are the same in ID3 and Cupra than it will be a tesla model 3 for me.
But from the optics alone I would pick the cupra 10 out of 10 times.
Great review!
Robert has an iPhone 20... lucky lad! Obvs a trusted Apple tester...
He's a time traveler !
In an hours time when the batteries died he'll be on iPhone 21.
appke best
thats a great car, much better looking than the id3, I really like it. Nice colour too. It will do well for sure. Great video as ever Bobby!
Nice to see Bobby back in the driver’s seat!

Honestly I think the Born is the most beautiful EV. I have never associated Spain with reliable engineering, but I love a hot hatch. I own a mapped FIAT that LEAPS off the line and has cost me more in repairs (90% done by me lying on my back under it in 4C february British weather witth eh engine 2cm from my face with oil on my face and grit in my eyes) than it did to buy so tbh I give more of AF about it being beautiful and fun than I do about it being practical and reliable. I would buy one of these.
amazing design. Especially the front.
I’ve owned three Cupras now.. Leon Cupra R, Leon Cupra 290 2019 and Leon Cupra 290 Lux 2020.. and recently a Ibiza FR Sport 2020.. safe to say I love Seat/Cupra vehicles, the style externally and internally.. I like how they perform. For a while now I’ve been considering going over to full electric, so I’m definitely to buy one of these.
I like it. It’s a hatchback with enough boot space, 5 seats and 5 seat belts. If I had the money it would be a serious contender.
4 seats if you opt for the bigger battery.
Been waiting for this
Not really bothered about the car - it's another posh EV - but I'm DELIGHTED that Bobby Loo Loo and the other F.C. peeps haven't abandoned their splendid 'signature' introduction, to wit: "THIS is sunny Barcelona; THAT is the Seat Doobrie-Whatsit... and THIS is Fully Charged."
I really, really, REALLY like that. Makes the Channel fizz. Love it. 🙂
Wow, I got through a Comment without being downright nasty. Must be something wrong with me.
So - if you have been - thank you for reading...
That shot as soon as you emerged from the tunnel, showing it from behind, immediately made me think:
Bob’s driving a brand new Prius V!
I LOVE the music entro!
Nice. I’d go for the Cupra, just!
What a BEAUTIFUL car!!
Fab review. Thanks!
Looks so much better that the ID3.
I love the blue with copper accents.
Am not jazzed, honestly can't find a reason to be, but awesome video n welcome back Robert
First time when a Seat Cupra actually has the seats made of cup ramen.
What an amazing car! Now I can't wait for an electric Seat Ibiza
Love the design, and just looks like a fun car to drive. Wish we had it in the states.
I do like a sporty bit of flanging! 😆 And between this an the ID3, it'd be the Born for sure.
I'm not into (at all) self driving cars, but i do smile to myself thinking about telling it "To the manor, born..."
instead of saying "home" 😁
With all those copper bits, do you think someone in 'styling' misheard the brand name? Thought it was Copper and not Cupra?

Oh dear - this made me miss Barcelona a lot... And the car was nice too!
Much prefer Roberts car reviews. Good info, based in the real world and some good humour.
I think it looks fantastic, Cupra are at top of their game at the moment.
Hey Robert, I really Loved the Views of Barcelona! IT would be so interesting to also hear about your impressions of the Superblock-system the City has implemented ;)
This car has changed all my thoughts for my next EV! Thank you Robert 😊😂
The big round button on the steering wheel is for the cuupra mode, it is meant, as far as I have heard, to be more aggressive than the performance mode. And if you’re looking for a hot hatch, next spring you can buy a Born with a power boost up to 175kW.
But, c’mon it is already faster than your old Golf R32!
I love the 3 “this is” introduction. Please stick to three
I'd be all over one of those over an ID.3, love the colour and the copper, but I'd ask very nicely if I could have a normal Seat badge on the bonnet instead of that weird pointy thing.
I love the blue and cooper look.
For those who think EVs should be synonym of minimalism this car is an opprobrium, but de gustibus here apply.
Strange that a stylish design school as that of Barcelona can give birth to something like this.
I'm glad to have a car where I press one button to operate the driving mode or turne one knob to change ac. thx for the review.
I like that rear seat room!
Trying to convince my wife into electric from her Audi A3 Cabriolet and thought this might float her boat....its still proving difficult 😭⚡🙈
Does look pretty tasty 👌🏻 Think I’d remove the giant bonnet badge though.
Software becomes more and more important and these old brands just don't have it properly.
its got 'panache' nice looking car much better than id3 especially with glass roof and a good choice of colours inside and out and alloys. The filming on point as always and nice drone shots and background music.
Love the design & would pick it over an ID3 ANYDAY!
That intro is fire
Blimey that is a great looking car!
Sounds very skillfully differentiated with the ID.3
I really wish we could get this in the US. Beautiful little car
The battery is from Nothvolt, Sweden.
Hey!! It’s really sunny ☀️ in Doncaster at times!!!! Cheeky 😜
