Athearn makes great models. Their RTR series has some of the most detailed budget priced models out their and the Genesis series is simply stunning. I own an FEF-3 from the Genesis line: Union Pacific #840 in the greyhound paint scheme. Thing can pull the couplers off of trains and it sounds amazing.
I'm getting a csx sd70ace from athearn genesis this monday. Can't wait!

What kinda bugs me is that the headlight belongs on the nose, not the cab. They could’ve raised the up logo a little more

Actually this is the correct headlight arrangement for the UP SD70Ms (NS, CSX, SP, Susquehanna, as well as the EMD demonstrator units also had this same headlight arrangement) also the paint scheme on UP 3978 is representative of the prototype locomotive shortly after it was repainted into the "lightning stripe" scheme. I have seen photos of similar UP SD70Ms that have been repainted into this very scheme which isn't surprising considering that most of these early UP SD70Ms are well over 20 years old and the ones still in their as delivered scheme are really starting to show their age!

I have an SD70M too, Craftyfoxe! But it's with flared radiators and it's number is 3971.
Athearn makes Genesis 2.0, a more detailed model with see through, steps illuminated number boards, ground lights, rotating bearing caps, better overall detail, and more see through vents than usual.

If you need track cleaning try graphite powder, it's used on pantographs and works wonders with track.

UP applys the yellow then grey so its actually realistic because paint chips on the roof and stuff

Athearn's quality has slipped big time, especially with regards to craftsmanship. I personally have been very disappointed in them lately.

I feel like athearn over-does the packaging. There’s no doubt the do REALLY great products. I have a brand new csx engine from them and it works great. But I shouldn’t have to open the box, take a plastic cover off, open the other plastic thing, take that off, take a piece of plastic wrap off then finally get to the engine. I just feel it’s too many steps just to open up a box and get to the actual product.

If you ever get the athern SD60 triclops be careful the wheel bearing caps are separate parts and can come off in shipping and are very small

6:42 that’s not an airhose. Both scaletrains and athearn have an airhose. The thing under the coupler is a metal wire used to uncouple cars using a magnetic uncoupler block. It’s found on most models. Scaletrains doesn’t include it I guess since it’s not realistic and most people don’t use magnetic uncouplers.

So that air break looking thing under the coupler is used for decoupling the cars without having to lift the trains up and uncouple them and it’s used for automatic decouplers

Athearn are noisy and bad quality, no offence to anyone. I DO prefer Kato, less details but they deliver quality.

for the yellow splotches, it is most likely just a small paint mix when they were painting the model. small things like that are not uncommon for HO scale.
Fun Fact:The owner of Scaletrains (Shane Wilson) worked for Athearn for about 7 years before he made his own company.
