Homelite 5-ton Electric Log Splitter Review - 25 in Oak Log

- This is a quick review of the Homelite splitter. I have been very happy with the product and would buy it again. I routinely split 15-25 inch diameter oak and maple no problem. Only ever has issues with thick knots in the wood.
I've had mine for 9 years now. It is AMAZING AND DURABLE. It recently had a problem with the release plunger and I messed up when fixing it and it's time for a new splitter. I will get the same one. You are correct in saying it has no problem splitting huge pieces! Nice review and nice video! Thanks man!
9 years is pretty good for just $300!! Glad you got good use out of yours. I hope mine keeps chugging along, so far so good!
i have the same log slpiter but lost the washerthat fits the dip stick dont know how to fine one on homelite for over twoy years
you would know the phone # to homelite in canada Thanks Donna in BC Canada
I have one too. It amazes me with what it can split. I have a weak back too, so I like the fact that I can roll pieces of large wood up a ramp as he does. Hey, it is not a production machine, but it fits my needs.
I have the same splitter. I built a plywood ramp, and splitted 36" Maple, 30 " fir . This 5 ton beaver is doing my firewood for 10 years now, no complain! Try to split green wood.
That's awesome! If I see anything bigger than 36" I'll go for it! You're right though, has to be green wood.
Great video, I have one too, I am amazed at what it can do. Did I mention no exhaust, I don’t miss that or the noise from the gas unit.
Great video and review, just what I’m looking for, love your enthusiasm bro, be blessed.
Thanks for your kind words. Great little splitter, enjoy!
Welcome bro 👊🏻
Thanks for the video. I saw that this was available at Home Depot and wanted to see it in action. I'm sold!
Thanks for the kind words. Did you end up getting one? How's it working out for you?
Got my Boss 7T20 yesterday…looking forward to it.
I appreciate this review. I just scored one of these for free and can't wait to get the rounds similar in size to yours off my lawn.
Great review - I just picked one up the other day. Thanks!
All my wood is knotty, but usually after a couple of tries and turns of the log it got split. I didn't try such a huge rounds though because there is no way to lift them on the splitter by myself - first I split them by hand into manageable pieces.
Dry wood is a lot tougher to split that’s why you split wood fresh. It’s just how it is. Nice job on the video I’m looking into getting one. Tired of swinging an ax 😂
I had the same splitter for 10 years now, never want to go back to swinging again.
Donde se compra y precio
Looking at this Unit - one "bad design" feature? The Button location. Can see a few logs roll right on to your arm. And THAT was a big boy!
Surprisingly it hasn't been an issue. The blunt end pushes away from you, so you should be good. But, something to always keep in mind, gotta pay attention.
Just go to Harbor Freight and buy a cheap clamp and clamp that button in the on position, then no second hand needed and no arm in the way!
Good review, I need something to split knots. i burn a lot of ash and oak and got abou a cord of knotty wood to split. I thing I'm buying the Champion 7 ton splitter from tractor supply.
Yeah, might need something a bit more heavy duty if you are expecting knotty wood
I have space chucks so I don't have to wait long before it splits. Best to get a 7 ton spliter and use wedges if it gets stuck on a knot. Nice stacking BTW
Yeah that is a great idea. A few seconds every split adds up.
I just bought a electric STIHL (13.1AMP MSE170) CHAINSAW, and a PREDATOR INVERTER 2000 watt GENERATOR, all I need now is the SPLITTER and TRAILER
THEN IM IN BUSINESS
Nice video quality! What is that, about 4 cords? Also, it’s about as fast as the “30 ton” gas splitter I just rented....not bad!
Kevr that pile ended up being a little over 2 cords, but this year I'll have just about 4 to do! Only problem is that it's a bit slow. If your logs are short enough you can use a small block of wood to hasten the process.
I thought maybe you were making this up to try and push your affiliate link, but I don't even see that you have an affiliate link. You are just that much of a fan of this? Maybe I might get one. I'm tired of using the manual 10 ton one from Harbor Freight.
I just like this little guy. That and I'm a nerd about this stuff
I use the HF manual to split the big rounds into quarters and then an electric 6-ton for the final splitting...good combination, and saves my back!
Oak splits easy, but I have cedar and it is usually knotty, I keep you informed
Thanks for the tip!
I cut up a large cedar tree that blew over, it had been standing dead for two years, cut it up with my battery operated chainsaw, and split the rounds with my electric 5 hp HF splitter, no problem, even with knots. So you should have no problem either!
Big rounds, can you pick that splitter up and set it on top the round, upside down?, smarter not harder
Wood gets harder as it drys. Less water, denser wood fibre. I always felt the main effort to a wood splitter is lifting the wood up, moving it around and then stacking it. The splitter makes the actual splitting the easiest. I wonder what the longevity of the units are, how much wood can you put through. Whats the maintenance like on it?
I haven't measured how much wood I can put through yet. The system is pretty slow, but many people tape down the button so you only have to press the lever, or using a block of wood on the blunt end helps to hasten the pace. Those are two ways to speed it up, but yeah, it takes a while. This is definitely for light duty. Maintenance is very simple, just keep an eye on the fluid levels.
@@ThomperBeThompin im looking to get one. This helped me, thank you!
with the big rounds and getting them on splitter use a round laying flat on ground of about 6 inch and roll log on to it so you have half the height and nothing to slip off ie piece of wood
Good info. I assume 110 not 220. Nobody ever says. Also, no one makes an upright splitter? Nobody talks about the fact you don't have to lift up if not horizontal splitting. No reviews of upright electrical splitters. Guess that is too esoteric.
They are much more expensive, and you can't use this one vertically. There are for sure videos about horizontal/vertical splitters on youtube (Huskee, Champion etc).
I have the 6 ton but a 50 foot cord to it . As you mentioned it dont like the the oak knots hahhha . I'm out of season, no man with an axe can split this stuff I'm sure
I have ash. About that size. It is tough. I wonder if it can do ash? We bounce the maul off it. Have to beat the hell out of it with 8 pound sledge and wedge.
I hate to say, but it probably won't be able to help you if you're already having to do all that. I suppose that's where the limitations are with this little guy.
@@ThomperBeThompin Thank you. Yeah, I am amazed at how some woods, particularly the hard woods like oak and black walnut, are actually easy to split, and cleave right apart when hit with an ax if thoroughly seasoned. Whereas soft woods can have a lot of fibers that hold together and just will not come apart. I rented a big 35 ton log splitter to do ash a couple years ago. I was amazed that the stuff didn't just pop apart. I had to run the splitter all the way through the stuff to separate all the fibers holding it together. Very time consuming. I probably got about a cord done in one very long day. (I wanted to get my money's worth of the rental cost.) And I left it in big pieces.
@@mikemonnig3046 ash splits fairly easy if its straight grained, but it is a stringy wood.Even with the big gas splitters you need an axe or better yet,a sharp hatchet to get it completely apart
Merry xmas to me!...i am buying one!
You're going to love it! Happy splitting
Great details!
Got one of these yesterday
Its a beast!
I havent tried my big stuff but so far its got through a few 30 inch+ gum rounds
Another thing the steel tubing will start bending with that much weight on it
I have the 5 tone splitter from harbor freight and it won’t split oak logs that thick or even fresh mesquite logs
Cheers for the review for it is a toss up between the Wen 6.5 ton and this Homelite splitter.
I have the WEN being delivered next week.
Do you have a WEN yourself; if so how goes it…?
Great video
Great review! Now just imagine the poor dumb saps who put their splitters up on stands so they "don't have to lift" trying to get that big honkin piece of oak up to their hips to put on the splitter! I swear, some people shouldn't reproduce! Thanks for posting this great video!
I have mine on a stand, and I have a 10 hydraulic manual splitter that I used to break those biggies in half. Then I can lift them! Work smarter, knot harder (pun intended)! HA HA
What oil and where do you put it please?
I actually use automatic trans fluid. I point out the fill plug in the beginning there somewhere
seems odd that seasoned oak would be more difficult. thx
This is a beast
Will this operate vertical?
I'm not sure. It was definitely designed to operate horizontally as it has four legs which it stands on. I suppose it could if you secure it properly. But may want to get a second opinion
dont think will as it needs oil pick from bottom of cylinder
No, it's not.
Why pick up a oversize log. Why not pick up the log splitter and put it on top of the log or put it on the side of the log.
Most hydraulics won't work upside down, I bought a new automotive lift jack and tried using it to pull out fence posts and as soon as it tilted, it stopped working.
How many watts?
I'm not sure. I think some other similar electric splitters are 1500 watts. This one is 15 amps too.
How is it on the electric bill?
Um, probably less than 5 cents an hour?
Lol really
Nice vid, how much????
How much what? He mentioned what he paid for it ....
Great video and great review man! Keep on splitting!
Bingo!
Stop talking! Split some wood....
LOL
truth....truth.... lol. I'll work on this in the future fo sho!
@@ThomperBeThompin hey friend...what did you put underneath your log stacks?...just wondering...
As long as it's not dry
This! This is so true. Much tougher to split the dry wood
Crap. I paid a grand for a gas powered 25T splitter. Works great, noisy as hell, takes up a good amount of space, and far more expensive then that electric splitter. :(
it's a lot faster though I bet!
Comprar
I'am not going to move logs that big around > NO WAY
Oak splits very easily
Now try it on a very hard wood.
It's definitely more difficult with tougher wood container knots and such.
@@ThomperBeThompin I know, These are good working machines for there size.
I dont like 2 hands buttons
Do like me..put Harbor Freight clamp on the switch and tighten until the unit turns on, then split one handed! Just unplug to turn off machine! Ha ha.
that's a good idea. It honestly gets tiring holding down that button after several hours.
Or buy foot pedal device, plus the clamp for the button to get one handed operation.
This should be retitled’ how to talk about a log splitter’.
It says review, not demo.
That is b/s
oak is great firewood, but it is not the best wood to use when trying to convince people about your log splitter.. Don't get me wrong, it seems to be a great little splitter, but splitting a piece of oak which is nice and straight, doesn't really show what it can do...
Try getting some piss elm... I have a 34 ton splitter and it had a hard time splitting that twisted, stringy nasty ass shit wood... Now that would be something to test your splitter on...
Tried it, and it failed miserably! I try to stay away from that elm as much as I can!
I have this exact same splitter and have had no trouble splitting elm.
So it likes well behaved wood
Not nottie wood ...
Lol
Get a gas one. They are so much more powerful
Can you run it in your basement where your wood stove is for an odd few logs you need to split or re-split? NO! BUT with these you can!
21kpatriot true, I never thought about that. Thanks for the idea!
Also more money
I dig ur seat lol 😳
Dont be like that
To much talking not enough wood splitting..
No a fan of the switch placement.
bravooooo
Holy shit lol
American oak maybe but Australian Jarrah? Forget it!
Elm is a no-go either
@@ThomperBeThompin I tried it on dry grey box...nota hope. Had to upgrade to 8 tonne. Hooefully that will work for me.
use an axe, much faster with this easy wood...
No thanks
Why knot?
Evidently you have never used a real log splitter. Lol
I own one not very happy with it doesn't come close to what you just did
You got a lemon
I will say, it's a lot tougher with really dry wood - so that could be an issue.
Save the splitter split once with chainsaw
Nice video...thank u.
