Beckii’s brother Elliot was held in a mental health hospital for four years, against the wishes of his family.
Elliot is back in the community now. But there are over 2000 people with a learning disability and autistic people locked away in secure hospitals right now, often far away from home. We hear of many cases of people being forcefully restrained, overmedicated, and secluded.
The government promised to reduce the number of people like Elliot held in mental health hospitals by 50%, but they are 6 years off meeting their deadline.
To end the waste of people’s lives, the government must come up with a new and better plan urgently so that more people can be back home with the right support.
