    So accurate, regardless of race every college student has to crank up the melodrama and spin a sob story if they want to get in.

      Is that how it works in America? I keep seeing videos that jokes about these college essays. Here in sweden they don't look at your name or race. They just go on your high school score or a University test that shows your current level of knowledge (The test is riddiculous hard though but if you do good on it you can't pretty much get into any University since few are able to get good score on it).

    • @Bormannator
      @Bormannator 7 років тому +200

      Snefer this is how it works for the most part. Colleges want to have a diverse campus because it makes them look better so if 2 people have the same grades and test score they will look at other factors and if you are poor, a minority and have a good sob/guilt story then you will beat out the other guy

      I kind of liken it to those American Idol contestant videos were they would show a person's sob story before their audition. Makes people like them more or something lol.

    • @suttone75
      @suttone75 7 років тому +31

      Kelsey M. That is because Idol has already chosen them for the contest and has made a back story for the show to allow the audience to relate to them and it allows the contestant to grow and, hopefully, win the contest. Plus it fills in what is needed for the "reality" part of the show.

      That's why there's a difference between cultural appreciation and appropriation as appropriation is taking people's culture without giving credit and when the people of that culture are ridiculed for doing it and to top it of that having the audacity to act like it's yours in the first place I'm black and the reason why many black people are sensitive about culture is it was stripped away and people were forced to assimilate so now when things like dreads and big butts and big lips are considered attractive on white women it's just a bit frustrating there has been a history of people stealing culture e.g country music which was sung by slaves but now is considered a white art but it's not always white people who should b vilified

      @Stella viura no they don't LMFAO. Like all Polynesian people and Oceanic people they originally came from South Asia and traveled during the Ice Age. It's like how Native Americans came from East Asia. Same concept bro. That's why if somebody that's from Africa and somebody that's say from Samoa have a blood test is not going to even be the same when they look at their DNA, their chromosomes, and everything will look different and they can even tell their haplogroup and it's different as well.

    • @RexTheDinosaur1
      @RexTheDinosaur1 5 років тому +5

      @@TexasBoyDrew There's no such thing. The people that a lot of people thought that were black natives were either escaped slaves that were accepted into some Native American tribes or eventually became their own tribe. But know their chromosomes and everything are completely different even their Origins are different.

      I don't mean to downplay the heinous things that were said to you, but reverse racism is different from the old form because it isn't and has never been institutionalized. People who talk shit about white people's existence are usually coming from a place of oppression that has happened over generations. I personally think it's mostly just hearsay from privileged people that are afraid.

      Na Na
      Sorry but that sounds like a bunch of hyperbolic crock to me. White people are the majority, they are not looked down upon or placed at the bottom of some racial hierarchy. American history is dictated by Eurocentric narratives and so are our cultural norms. Sure whites are given a hard time occasionally (mostly on the Internet) but they're still the most represented, most powerful ethnic group in America/Western world with the most social capital. White people are not treated like the underdog. They're not regarded as violent, criminal, less intelligent, less attractive, or even subhuman unlike some minorities.
      You say white people have owned up to their racism and minorities have to "do the same" as if the institutionalized and viscous racism of decades prior has some modern day equivalent directed at whites. Stop.

      Bullshit. Because in order to even use Native American on anything you have to prove it in the United States and Canada. Otherwise they know you're lying and you can get in trouble for it. They do give you a roll number to prove that you are Native American to get scholarships and other things like that. I actually knew Native American people growing up because I was from Oklahoma. And yeah you would get your ass in trouble for using Native American when you're not even native. It's also disgusting to lie and say that you're Native American when you're not.

    In Australia there is no college essay and no extra curriculars needed. You have a score called an ATAR which is an average total of all the marks from your classes and exams, and you need a particular score to get into the university course you want.
    The score will differ depending on the level the university thinks is necessary to succeed/qualify for the course. Certain courses are more popular/renowned at a particular university, like law at Melbourne University, and those need high scores, while usually at universities where an equivalent course is less popular, the score required will be lower. But each university has courses they are known for, so its about doing your research.
    You make a list of preferences and you get an offer from the highest preference that corresponds with your score. Some courses have interviews or need portfolios, like art, but mostly its on your score. For example, if you get a score of 95 and your top preference only needs a 87, than you will automatically get an offer.
    Also, the standardized test is only used if you are unable to show up to your final exams for some reason, so it acts as a back-up, but it isn’t important if that doesn’t happen.
    However, if you had a disability, experience disadvantage or are from rural or indigenous background, there is a form called SEAS that can add extra points when applying for university. But that process is regulated by a government body, rather than each university deciding what extra brownie points to allocate disadvantaged applicants.
    The process is different for mature aged students, I am not exactly sure how their application works, so in their case a written essay and interview may be required.
    Anyway, hope someone found this interesting!

      Well I'm glad the United States or at least in my state it wasn't like that. Because otherwise I would have never gotten a chance to go to university. Because I do very poorly on exams because they freak me out. I also had really bad grades in high school, mostly because my teachers were utter crap and didn't deserve to be teachers. But when I went to University( I did go to an accredited University.) But I did very well there I had a 4.0 by the time that I graduated. And if a junior college had not given me a chance to go there for 2 years to get a decent enough GPA before I tried to apply to University, I would have never gotten a chance to go. And the reason why my state does that it's because they do know that the public schools are utter garbage, but they don't want to do anything about them. That's why they give everyone a second chance by going through a program in a junior college to get an associates before you try applying to a 4-year University. But yeah my state in the U.S knows that the school's suck. That's why they do what they can to help kids have a chance to go to university.

    • @thealienwatcher540
      @thealienwatcher540 5 місяців тому

      Nope. It's never ever going 'bye bye' for thousands & thousands of years to come. It's how charismatic and touchy the story captures the audience not how factual it actually is. Another sitcom that gives the perfect indepth narration is that of 'The Scissor Killer' episode in Everybody Hates Chris. Chris writes a lovers story and its soo boring that even his caucasian friend tells him about it then he takes his friends advice to give people what they want to hear and goes and changes the same story with a little scary alterations. The next thing his story is on the front page of the local news paper. In comparison it's the same thing with politics. Look at how you easily you vote for politicians who lie about how they built their wealth up from nothing yet they literally inherited wealth or received investments from their already rich daddy's. What matters to you the listener is not how accurate or factual it is but how they tell it, how they make you feel and how it captures and motivates you to the extent that they make you think and see their altered version as the actual truth posibility. You' then easily fall for their cult of personality that you'd even fight and reject anyone who points out the actual truth about them. FYI this has been happening for thousands of years. It shouldn't be refered to as white guilt.

    I often wonder if I did College all wrong. Many of my friends and people I know went through a whole shit load of trials and tribulations in order to get into College after High School, I’ve also seen stuff just like this video all over social media. I, on the other hand, didn’t have to do shit to get into College other than graduate High School. I’m from NYC, got into College just fine, graduated with a 3.4 and got my Bachelor’s in 3 years - I also got a job immediately after graduating College.
    I really feel bad for people that have to be going through all of this just to suffer and not even be guaranteed a job after College.

      I get what you're saying. I'm in high school right now and there are some days when I feel as if all the work and stress and terror I internalize is just not worth it. Unfortunately, getting into a good college is the most conventional path to success. Convention is comforting, I guess.

    • @tealen8331

      Some people are born with skills while others have to work hard to acquire them. Me personally, I'm in the same boat as you. High school was pretty easy for me and I did get a few college credits in during that time. I recently graduated high school with a 3.3 GPA, which is actually pretty low for most colleges, but I still found a way to get into my top priority schools. I've been studying in college for a year and it's been smooth sailing from the start.

      Hey, never feel bad for the chances you are given, its completely alright to just be thankful that you didn't have to struggle. Hardship doesn't automatically make you less strong or deserving than someone else. It's just a different type that can be applied in different situations and besides your perspective is always valuable.

    Here in Sweden, you have 2 choices. Either you get in with your high school grades or a fkn hard ass exam called (högskoleprovet). You can take the exam how many times you want if you don't get enough points. No essays no nothing. If two people have the same grade they usually watch the course the two people have taken. And what their grades are on different courses. Btw swedish high schools have different programs so every high schooler don't take the same courses.

    • @firstlast-ep5ru
      @firstlast-ep5ru 4 роки тому +1

      @A Krishna Nope not for most people. A lot of high school students party and have fun during high school and then they will realise their grades suck. So they try to do this exam by paying money and if all of this doesn't work out then you can try to get into a school where you'll have to relearn almost everything. The worst thing is that almost all uni programmes crave really high grades.

    • @firstlast-ep5ru
      @firstlast-ep5ru 4 роки тому
