Colleges want to have a diverse campus because it makes them look better so if 2 people have the same grades and test score they will look at other factors and if you are poor, a minority and have a good sob/guilt story then you will beat out the other guy
I kind of liken it to those American Idol contestant videos were they would show a person's sob story before their audition. Makes people like them more or something lol.
Kelsey M. That is because Idol has already chosen them for the contest and has made a back story for the show to allow the audience to relate to them and it allows the contestant to grow and, hopefully, win the contest. Plus it fills in what is needed for the "reality" part of the show.

My friend is 1/8 Aboriginal but looks completely white. He's never met any of his indigenous relatives but claimed it as his heritage and got into ANU.
In Australia there is no college essay and no extra curriculars needed. You have a score called an ATAR which is an average total of all the marks from your classes and exams, and you need a particular score to get into the university course you want. The score will differ depending on the level the university thinks is necessary to succeed/qualify for the course. Certain courses are more popular/renowned at a particular university, like law at Melbourne University, and those need high scores, while usually at universities where an equivalent course is less popular, the score required will be lower. But each university has courses they are known for, so its about doing your research. You make a list of preferences and you get an offer from the highest preference that corresponds with your score. Some courses have interviews or need portfolios, like art, but mostly its on your score. For example, if you get a score of 95 and your top preference only needs a 87, than you will automatically get an offer. Also, the standardized test is only used if you are unable to show up to your final exams for some reason, so it acts as a back-up, but it isn’t important if that doesn’t happen. However, if you had a disability, experience disadvantage or are from rural or indigenous background, there is a form called SEAS that can add extra points when applying for university. But that process is regulated by a government body, rather than each university deciding what extra brownie points to allocate disadvantaged applicants. The process is different for mature aged students, I am not exactly sure how their application works, so in their case a written essay and interview may be required. Anyway, hope someone found this interesting!
Well I'm glad the United States or at least in my state it wasn't like that. Because otherwise I would have never gotten a chance to go to university. Because I do very poorly on exams because they freak me out. I also had really bad grades in high school, mostly because my teachers were utter crap and didn't deserve to be teachers. But when I went to University( I did go to an accredited University.) But I did very well there I had a 4.0 by the time that I graduated. And if a junior college had not given me a chance to go there for 2 years to get a decent enough GPA before I tried to apply to University, I would have never gotten a chance to go. And the reason why my state does that it's because they do know that the public schools are utter garbage, but they don't want to do anything about them. That's why they give everyone a second chance by going through a program in a junior college to get an associates before you try applying to a 4-year University. But yeah my state in the U.S knows that the school's suck. That's why they do what they can to help kids have a chance to go to university.

Im white and I actually did grow up like this, actually much worse then what she described. In abject poverty, trapped in violent neighborhoods being abused with a father that was sentenced to death row when i was only 3 years old. And the one or two times i simply tell someone about my life that dont know me they tell me to shut up and that im privileged.
Nope. It's never ever going 'bye bye' for thousands & thousands of years to come. It's how charismatic and touchy the story captures the audience not how factual it actually is. Another sitcom that gives the perfect indepth narration is that of 'The Scissor Killer' episode in Everybody Hates Chris. Chris writes a lovers story and its soo boring that even his caucasian friend tells him about it then he takes his friends advice to give people what they want to hear and goes and changes the same story with a little scary alterations. The next thing his story is on the front page of the local news paper. In comparison it's the same thing with politics. Look at how you easily you vote for politicians who lie about how they built their wealth up from nothing yet they literally inherited wealth or received investments from their already rich daddy's. What matters to you the listener is not how accurate or factual it is but how they tell it, how they make you feel and how it captures and motivates you to the extent that they make you think and see their altered version as the actual truth posibility. You' then easily fall for their cult of personality that you'd even fight and reject anyone who points out the actual truth about them. FYI this has been happening for thousands of years. It shouldn't be refered to as white guilt.
I often wonder if I did College all wrong. Many of my friends and people I know went through a whole shit load of trials and tribulations in order to get into College after High School, I’ve also seen stuff just like this video all over social media. I, on the other hand, didn’t have to do shit to get into College other than graduate High School. I’m from NYC, got into College just fine, graduated with a 3.4 and got my Bachelor’s in 3 years - I also got a job immediately after graduating College. I really feel bad for people that have to be going through all of this just to suffer and not even be guaranteed a job after College.
I get what you're saying. I'm in high school right now and there are some days when I feel as if all the work and stress and terror I internalize is just not worth it. Unfortunately, getting into a good college is the most conventional path to success. Convention is comforting, I guess.
Some people are born with skills while others have to work hard to acquire them. Me personally, I'm in the same boat as you. High school was pretty easy for me and I did get a few college credits in during that time. I recently graduated high school with a 3.3 GPA, which is actually pretty low for most colleges, but I still found a way to get into my top priority schools. I've been studying in college for a year and it's been smooth sailing from the start.
Hey, never feel bad for the chances you are given, its completely alright to just be thankful that you didn't have to struggle. Hardship doesn't automatically make you less strong or deserving than someone else. It's just a different type that can be applied in different situations and besides your perspective is always valuable.
@ITHEREONETHATHASNT I'm not even in high school. If I lived in America I'd be in middle school but thank God I don't. And I'm the top of my class which is also the top set. So I'm pretty sure I'll easily get into a good high school when I'm older.
My best friend and I both have sick moms and no dads (might be why we’re best friends, tbh) and you bet we spun that in the most pitiable ways possible for our college essays. I mean, we got the circumstances, might as well use them to our advantage!
I'm 29, and decided on my birthday, 11/11 that I wanted to start over again studying...by the end of the day I was already in in what is probably one of the top 5 private universities in the country, and according to the website, ranked pretty high in the continent as well... Also, with it being a private university, they charge you around 200 usd monthly.
@darby2darby Like I Said, IYKYK. Apparently, you Do Not. (“Bad shows” generally do not have strong ratings, long runs, have their actors go out on their Own Terms, or produce Spin-Offs.) This one did all of those things.
As a black dude in middle America I feel like I did college wrong, I scored a 28 on the act the one and only time I took it as a junior. My counselor assured that I'd get into the flagship state university which I did, got a finance degree in 3yrs and a good job right out of college. I've always wondered what would have happened if I'd applied myself to the test scores and essays and applied to the ivy league, Stanford, Duke etc, would have loved to do study abroad type of shit
This is why I’m marrying a Hispanic. I want my kids to have an advantage in life, and the way society is going it’s obvious you will be able to get lots of govt perks based on your skin color. It’s a shame MLKs words will never really be brought to light, but that doesn’t mean I’m not going to take advantage of the system for my future children if I can
That's how college essays work, at least in California where I applied. All the prompts are basically "tell a story about yourself or something that matters to you." They're more like personal statements.
IDK what kind of copies you've been applying to but pretty much every single prompt basically requires an I pronoun in there somewhere(well American ones at least)
I did not have to do this and I got into college. I wrote a whole essay about how I shoot hoops in my backyard so I don't say things I'll end up regretting later
I will have the best college essay around lol I was in drama club for 5 years to nurture my love of theater. At the time I also learned ASL so I could communicate with the unheard. I then moved to Africa for 2 years as a missionary.
Dag, I sure am glad I had an academic and sports scholly. Never had to speak on how I was raised or my circumstances. Just what I've accomplished. Didn't think people wrote with an intent to trigger "white guilt." But my college days was 20 yrs ago, 🤷🏾♀️
Colleges look for a sob story but Im like "Hell naw, Im not going to fabricate some sad ass story just to garner a pity party and get me into college" because I have too much pride for that (I know you gotta do what you gotta do to get into college, but I relied on my stereotypical Asian extracurriculars and grades for that!) I hate the guilt tripping method so I was brutally honest on my college essay. Guess what I wrote about? I wrote about how I love money and how I didnt care that Id be deemed materialistic. Got into the college I wanted so Im all good 👍🏻
Here in Sweden, you have 2 choices. Either you get in with your high school grades or a fkn hard ass exam called (högskoleprovet). You can take the exam how many times you want if you don't get enough points. No essays no nothing. If two people have the same grade they usually watch the course the two people have taken. And what their grades are on different courses. Btw swedish high schools have different programs so every high schooler don't take the same courses.
@A Krishna Nope not for most people. A lot of high school students party and have fun during high school and then they will realise their grades suck. So they try to do this exam by paying money and if all of this doesn't work out then you can try to get into a school where you'll have to relearn almost everything. The worst thing is that almost all uni programmes crave really high grades.
@A Krishna I know what u mean but it's harder even for the good students. If u like have A on everything and get 2 Bs then ur chance of getting into medical school drops down to around 0-10%
Most people would call this not playing fair. Me? I call it going with your strengths. It's hard to get into college and most people getting in aren't playing fair. It's called life. I'm not a fan of manipulating with white guilt but this was a smart move to get into college.

For some reason I think the show is making fun of itself. I guess I could chuckle to that
It’s satire. Some moments are serious and some are not. For a more serious tone, look at the police shooting case episode.
wow, I just heard Samoan... I'm so proud!!
Mø Nälayé I'm not saying she is a Samoan, I'm saying that the first time hearing my country's name on a TV show is awesome.. u understand wat I'm saying???
Ahaha yes yes, I got you. But Mø Nälayé is also alerting you to an inside joke from earlier episodes on the show! *wink* ;)
Mø Nälayé Bow has made the Samoan reference a couple of other times
I love Tracee Ellis Ross! Her timing and delivery are genius!!
Hearing about college essays makes me happy that I live in a country where college applications are anonymous.
What country??
I put that I was Hispanic, black and native American, easy in
So much for that "white privilege"
Bullshit. Because in order to even use Native American on anything you have to prove it in the United States and Canada. Otherwise they know you're lying and you can get in trouble for it. They do give you a roll number to prove that you are Native American to get scholarships and other things like that. I actually knew Native American people growing up because I was from Oklahoma. And yeah you would get your ass in trouble for using Native American when you're not even native. It's also disgusting to lie and say that you're Native American when you're not.
Are you any of those? I ask as someone who is all three.
DAVEED
I love this sm
I just want to appreciate him
This, waz honestly genius. Poetic cinema
My friend is 1/8 Aboriginal but looks completely white. He's never met any of his indigenous relatives but claimed it as his heritage and got into ANU.
i’m white and i’ve still managed to use this approach for a shit ton of essays
Big ass mood for literally every application I do
In Australia there is no college essay and no extra curriculars needed.
I did ;)
Well I'm glad the United States or at least in my state it wasn't like that.
A small tear came out of my eye on this one. Oh good stuff.
"BTW we're part Samoan"...I feel so proud 😂😂😂but then I did some thinking and the joke is that all the Samoans live together in one house...your uncle, grandma, Grandpa, and siblings... 😂😂😂😂
No that's not what the joke is lol its because The mom put she was samoan on an application to get a scholarship and the husband teases her about it 🤣🤣
Yes I got it 😂
Im white and I actually did grow up like this, actually much worse then what she described. In abject poverty, trapped in violent neighborhoods being abused with a father that was sentenced to death row when i was only 3 years old.
And the one or two times i simply tell someone about my life that dont know me they tell me to shut up and that im privileged.
😞 I'm sorry, man.
Privilege shaming is so dumb.
I agree not everyone who is white is privileged. It’s a horrible myth
wow this really made me laught lol i tought her mother ia going to get mad but she didnt jajajajaja best show ever lol
I kind of thought that was going to happen to. The parents seem like the sort of people who don't want to be shown as less than what they are.
I had no idea David Diggs was in this show. Also, this show seems pretty funny.
kelly almazo It is
Daveed*
This is exactly the type of thing that's going bye-bye real soon.
Nope. Essays are Always going to sway Someone on the Selection Committee.
You do not Have to “check that Box.”
I just nothing .. The guy with the curly hair eating the salad is the same guy in the Snowpiercer Show.. Great actor..
True I’m a Hispanic adoptee and I use that everywhere
Damn! This, combined with affirmative action, will definitely get you in!!
Girl! That gone be me in the next year or so!!
Everytime I got a letter of recommendation from a teacher for scholarships they constantly used white guilt
She is sooooooooooooo gorgeous!!!
I’m doing the same to get into graduate school . 🙌🏿
I don't watch this show very often, but does have its moments!
I did this for my highschool application and got in lmao
@ITHEREONETHATHASNTlearn to spell please. Its clear you dropped out of elementary school.
@ITHEREONETHATHASNT I'm not even in high school. If I lived in America I'd be in middle school but thank God I don't. And I'm the top of my class which is also the top set. So I'm pretty sure I'll easily get into a good high school when I'm older.
Proud to be black.
My best friend and I both have sick moms and no dads (might be why we’re best friends, tbh) and you bet we spun that in the most pitiable ways possible for our college essays. I mean, we got the circumstances, might as well use them to our advantage!
btw we're part Samoan. 😂
Bruh, I totally milked being diagnosed with autism, we all do it for the college essays! 😂
I'm 29, and decided on my birthday, 11/11 that I wanted to start over again studying...by the end of the day I was already in in what is probably one of the top 5 private universities in the country, and according to the website, ranked pretty high in the continent as well...
Also, with it being a private university, they charge you around 200 usd monthly.
i have bad medical issues.... accepted everywhere i applied w a scholarship lol
This is a show about a Black Family, trying to make it in a White Man’s World. IYKYK.
I don’t think that you do. js
@darby2darby
Like I Said, IYKYK. Apparently, you Do Not.
(“Bad shows” generally do not have strong ratings, long runs, have their actors go out on their Own Terms, or produce Spin-Offs.)
This one did all of those things.
When you never wrote any college essays, and got in every single one 😇
So I have to write about a deserpate struggle to get in to college 😭🙃consider it done
I should've did this when I was applying for college.
Same
This is why I’m marrying a Hispanic. I want my kids to have an advantage in life, and the way society is going it’s obvious you will be able to get lots of govt perks based on your skin color. It’s a shame MLKs words will never really be brought to light, but that doesn’t mean I’m not going to take advantage of the system for my future children if I can
this is funny. but she used first person pronoun on a college entry essay?
her thesis is lost in the mix.
That's how college essays work, at least in California where I applied. All the prompts are basically "tell a story about yourself or something that matters to you." They're more like personal statements.
huh.
Honestly, I'm Canadian. My college applications were crazy different. It's kind of fascinating to hear how differently it worked for you guys
IDK what kind of copies you've been applying to but pretty much every single prompt basically requires an I pronoun in there somewhere(well American ones at least)
Ben Ghan What are you talking about? I'm Canadian and I had to write an essay about something personal to get accepted into University.
As a German... I have to give my high school diploma to the university and I get a spot :P nice and easy ^^
I did not have to do this and I got into college. I wrote a whole essay about how I shoot hoops in my backyard so I don't say things I'll end up regretting later
I will have the best college essay around lol
I was in drama club for 5 years to nurture my love of theater. At the time I also learned ASL so I could communicate with the unheard. I then moved to Africa for 2 years as a missionary.
The dad obsessing over Obama tho 0:30 🤣🤣🤣
Dag, I sure am glad I had an academic and sports scholly. Never had to speak on how I was raised or my circumstances. Just what I've accomplished. Didn't think people wrote with an intent to trigger "white guilt." But my college days was 20 yrs ago, 🤷🏾♀️
So America's college entrance is like AGT where you need a sob story to get the golden buzzer???
This helped my essay also even though half of it wasn’t true.
My brother did the same thing and he’s Mayan. Yeah the schools were just chomping at the bit.
Got into the college I wanted so Im all good 👍🏻
Yo I dead wrote my essay about having my father in and out of my life and my mom being a single teen mom, and we weren’t even Americans lol 🇯🇲
This will be my essay
@A Krishna What do u mean?
Maybe If I did what Zoey did, The University wouldn't have rejected me
But ZOE wasn’t lying tho. Middle-Class receipts are still receipts. ZOE had the “chops.” She just needed to find the “crack in the door.”
I loved that speech!
Humans regardless of what group as a rule need Human Guilt.
Most people would call this not playing fair. Me? I call it going with your strengths. It's hard to get into college and most people getting in aren't playing fair. It's called life. I'm not a fan of manipulating with white guilt but this was a smart move to get into college.
Have fun paying off that $150,000 pottery history degree working part time at a coffee shop 😂😂😂😂😂
I don’t see a lot of unpaid student loans in the Johnson children’s future.
They were raised on ambition and higher achievement. I can see ZOE turning that
Pottery History Degree into a profitable business at the very least. (Especially if she lets DIANE become her Curator/Marketing/Business Manager. js😂)
I was white so I used my mom dying for my essay
as long as they keep saying "It's not our fault!", it's only going to get worse.
Man am I gonna miss this family when season 8 ends. :-(
I find this sooo hypocritical because the freaking show does the exact damn thing
Hays Collins - that’s the joke
If I know White Guilt was a thing, I would use my "my parents left Vietnam in the 70s" story to it's full advantage a long time ago.
Why'd grandpa do his face like that when she said he doesn't vote? 😂😂😂
I'm a Malaysian Indian and best believe I turned up the white guilt on my Common App essays, lmao
Don’t know where your next meal is coming from? Do you mean the fridge? Lol
And she is Fired now
this funny af because I did the same thing on my college essay hahahah
In Canada, you don’t really ever write essays to get into university let alone college unless it’s a specific program that is highly competitive. American colleges are wild
We don't. Well you like if you're going to an Ivy League school or something like that. Or field that is highly competitive.
It's from the Ryan Lochte school of truth-telling. None of it technically a lie ...
Reading the comments under this video has made me understand now why some Black people see Blackish as a show for white folks.
Me being samoan i Love the love for samoans from this xx
I used white guilt to get into NYU the same one she applied for lmao. I’m here and it’s 😅😅😅. Zoey made the right choice going to Cal U
I’m white, but I’m thinking about using “straight guilt” (if that exists) in my essay 😂
We’re part Somoan
