In one of the NYT tributes, they referenced your deconstruction of Chita Rivera singing the English Teacher from Bye Bye Birdie. and it's true all you unearthed about every phrase, note, context, musicality. She was the best theater gift and artist and person.
I met Gwen Vernon in Los Angeles at the pre Broadway trials of Fosse. She was so nice. That night I also met Ann Thinking and Carol Burnett. A special night for this gay musical lover.
I worked with Chita in 1969. Loved her so much, and we were close friends for 4 weeks! She was 37 maybe? I was 23. I have such memories of her profound humanity, trashy mouth, no bullshit approach to everything, and LOVE! And now I love be watching all these hearty tributes. 💙✌🤟
I have been devastated since I heard about Chita's passing, yesterday afternoon. She was my idol. I am so glad and honored to have met her when I went to see The Rink.
Thank you for this lovely tribute from those who truly knew her. I’ve looked at a few others for seconds. When they called her “China” Rivera, I was outta there. How disrespectful.
One of the great things about Chita's singing was that she had a very distinctive sound -- you knew you were hearing Chita Rivera by the timbre of her voice. Her Birdie tracks are some of favorites!
Another Broadway legend Hinton Battle died today. He was a 3-time Tony Award winner. Rough day for the Great White Way.
I remember him when he did the Buffy Musical. Amazing talent. What a loss for the community.
Both Chicago Alum
I hope PBS Re-airs the ‘Broadway through the decades’ program which featured Chita singing ‘All That Jazz’ and others.
